It can be a little unforgiving at times and I feel like having the movement and aiming on one stick is kind of flawed compared to twin stick controls. However, it's still quite a fun time even if I had to abuse save states to beat it (No Konami code on the arcade version).Updated 3.5 Weeks Ago

It's hard to appreciate this game almost 40 years after its release. Overall ok, pretty decent graphics and snappy gameplay. On the downside, the difficulty is too cranked out towards the end and the platform limitations (too much flickering sprites and intermittent sounds). The game is passed in half an hour, but gamedesigner's idea is to 10-15-20 hours 'try-and-error' the same levels in the hope of random success - you should play this on emulator with rewindUpdated 6 Months Ago

Zerei no meu Dynavision Xtreme, meu famiclone do coração S2. Pegar um contrinha depois de zerar um Metal Slug é delicinha demais, que foi meu caso e, inclusive, recomendo fazer isso. E, se possível, joga no co-op local, vale a pena demais.

This game was alright. Definitely a great side scroller/shooter. But that's it. Super difficult. The head-on stages are hard on your depth perception. Although, the famous Contra code was spawned because of this game.Updated 8.5 Months Ago

Contra is a classic arcade shooting game that has you teaming up with a friend to kill all the bad guys. Pick up weapons and shoot your way through heaps of enemies, machines, bosses and even aliens. The arcade version is a little shorter the nes version but still plays really well. Memorize those enemy patterns and you'll be finished this game in no time!Updated 1 Year Ago

Played as part of the Contra Collection. Nicer graphics than the NES version but at the cost of constant slowdown, which actually helped make it significantly easier. Rare instance of the NES port being superior than the arcade version.Updated 1 Year Ago

A classic for a reason. Playing it in 2022, I found it to be a bit dated and the lack of autofire/turbo makes it a thumb killler (fortunately M2, who ported it, added it). Some of the deaths I experienced felt cheap due to tiny, hard to see overlapping pixels. Ultimately though it's a great game if you try to 1CC it (which I did, twice). It forces you to dive deep and learn the stages. There's enough RNG that the game throws several curve balls at you which really tests your reflexes and skills. Fortunately not enough RNG for a frustrating experience. A great game overall.Updated 2 Years Ago

Has a way of making you feel cool as fuck while simultaneously kicking your ass. There's one or two mechanics that are a bit cheap, such as the erecting walls that you don't get an impression of before hand, but everything else is pure and soft like an unfinished crunch-wrapUpdated 2 Years Ago

A port of the arcade version, Contra's success had to lie in how well the difficulty was handled and this game doesn't fuck around. You either learn to play it the right way or you give up. That being said, I found that Contra was surprisingly on the fairer side of things when it came to difficulty. Don't get me wrong, this game is brutal, but most of that is surmountable.Jungle is an excellent intro stage as it is a perfect playground for you to test out different guns and get a feel for the controls while gradually being drip-fed a rising difficulty curve. Waterfall is an evolution of this as it becomes a vertical level and helps solidify your grasp on the jumping mechanics. Snow field was probably my least favorite of the standard levels due to the Basquez enemies appearing onscreen far too late for you to have time to react to them as well and having a confusing hitbox. The miniboss was pretty lame and gets used twice. The Guldaf is also a complete pushover of an actual boss fight. Energy Zone was a good level with Gordea being my favorite boss but whoever designed those fire pillars can go fuck themselves. Rather than be a timed obstacle like most platformers, the damn things only go off when you get close enough to them making platforming a pain in the ass to do with them. Hangar Zone was fine if a little unmemorable. The excessive usage of those spiked walls was annoying and the minecarts were an unnecessary nuisance. The boss was also pretty lazy. Alien's Lair is a fun stage if you're using anything but the main gun, as the bulk of the levels enemies use fast-moving projectiles that home in on your location and the final boss felt nigh-impossible while using it.
The worst part of this game, other than the occasional bullshit death, had to be the two base levels. They felt like leftover scraps from the arcade version of this game and were incredibly boring when compared to the rest of the levels. Your movement is restricted to an annoying degree and the amount of shit that gets thrown at you in the later portions of these levels overdoes it.
The music is great and the gun variety was much enjoyed (even if the shotgun overshadows every other gun type).
All-in-all, despite some rough patches, Contra ended up being far more enjoyable than I initially thought it'd be.

yeah i used the konami code to beat this, but honestly the game is balanced enough to where it is very possible to get good enough to finish the game without needing it. I just haven't gotten around to doing a playthrough in that vein just yet.Updated 2.5 Years Ago

Classic run 'n' gun platformer. A fine example of where the home conversion resoundingly trumps the arcade original. Gameplay is definitely challenging and has a learning curve, but it is nowhere near as difficult as its reputation suggests. Side note: the original Japanese release has higher presentation value. It has cutscenes between levelsUpdated 9.5 Years Ago
