Good game. Played it after years of being stuck. Final boss took a couple of tries, but eventually it clicked.Updated 1.5 Weeks Ago

I was 8 when I completed this. With out Yo-Kai watch I wouldn’t be a freak. But looking back at this, yeah it’s isn’t that special. I believe the second one is far better.Updated 2 Months Ago

I wouldn't compare this game with Pokémon other than the fact you collect monsters in both cases. Yo-kai Watch is a fundamently different game without random encounters, linear structure with sidetracks or collecting gym badges. Its more like an adventure where you explore your big hometown. Not really Open World but it opens up quickly and doesn't feel like you strictly gotta follow a path. Which can make you feel lost sometimes but given who the main audience of that game was, you'll most likely find out everything at some point. Whatever you do when picking up this and probably any other game of this series, don't approach it like every other RPG. It really is a different spin on both the genre as well as the usual monster collecting formula.Getting back into it after some years of playing and not completing it. Due to the mindset I had expecting something similar to Pokémon. It feels really fresh and I'm happy to experience it in full this time.
Edit: Had to retire it because my Cardridge was broken. Still works but too many bugs that ruin the experience for me. It seems the physical copies of this game are easy to break if not used for a long time. At least thats what I read from the internet. Would recommend the download version which also seems to have some problems. Though that is hard to get now that the E-Shop is gone. Maybe the Switchport will come to the west at some day?

The biggest hit of childhood wonder I've had in a game in a long time. I didn't play this when I was a kid, was a stout believer against anything that resembled Pokemon that wasn't Pokemon, but damn did I miss out.The world was built so well, which is something I think Level-5 just excels at in general. Yes, there are some grating mechanics (the battle system did wear on me towards the end), but overall the gameplay loop is super rewarding. Haven't had a game with so many side quests that I actually wanted to do. Chiefly because of how much I was loving uncovering the world. The story isn't crazy great, but it's good and scratched an itch that a 20 year old wanted to disappear into his child-self for a good couple hours.
Will be revisiting. And continuing to play. AND THE SOUNDTRACK? Mwah. Very good. Yes, poor in some aspects, but I overlook them, which is surprising since I don't have an actual childhood attachment to the game.

pros- great visuals
- the japanese town you explore is surprisingly detailed and has lots of little secrets
- battles are... unique, and require a lot more interaction than I expected. they aren't boring at least
- training yo-kai and collecting items feels rewarding (mostly, see more details in cons list)
cons
- RNG heavy yo-kai recruitment and mandatory bug collection (among many other tedious tasks you are forced to do) can become very irritating
- the game has nearly no plot (not that is really needs it to be honest). If you are expecting any kind of story you will be disappointed
- side quests become a total chore very quickly
- yo-kai fusion is a disappointing mechanic that doesn't really go anywhere. you can get a few good yo-kai through fusion, but I think I used it 2 or 3 times maybe

stop comparing this to pokemon already. This game is cool, but it's also kind of incredibly obsolete considering the fact that the sequels of this game are more updated versions of this game rather than being their own standalone things, so it's really hard for me to give this a rec proper over those. I think yo kai watch is super cool in that the entire game world is just one city, so there's an immense amount of detail and care put into every crevice of that city, which makes for a smaller yet more explorable world to catch critters in. the yo kai series is absolute vibes and this game is also an absolute vibe. I will say however that there is an unncessarily large amount of luck when it comes to actually getting the yo kai that you want which isn't that fun and can make the game extremely grindy.Updated 2 Years Ago

what starts out as a game that could easily replace pokemon on 3DS is quickly bogged down by way too much filler side quests to upgrade your watch rank, working as a kind of level barrier. The peak of this is having to find a stag beetle in the second to last chapter, which took a good hour of my time and several times running around the mountain checking trees. So yeah I'm salty. Still excited to check out 2, 3 and eventually 4 thoUpdated 3 Years Ago

pretty good little rpg, does enough to separate itself from Pokemon that it's worth a play in its own right. fun battle mechanics but side quests can become repetitiveUpdated 3 Years Ago

Disappointing, given Level-5’s track record I expected much more. While it certainly is a JRPG, it’s muddied by the awkward localisation choices and handholdy dialogue. Check it out if you’re curious, but you’re going to need to force your way throughUpdated 5 Years Ago

I kept hearing how good this franchise was, so I decided to pick it up. Safe to say I was rather disappointed. It's very quirky, and while I enjoy quirky, it became super repetitive super fast. And granted how battle gameplay had barely any player input, it didn't make the situation any better. It might sound weird but my favorite part was actually the overworld. Like, I really enjoyed the way the game world was crafted, and the attention to detail. I'd LOVE to play an open world adventure game in a world like that, But definitely not a game like this, it felt like a waste, in a way.Regardless, the game wasn't terrible, I just didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would. I had to come back to it frequently just because I lost the will to carry on all the time.

Really enjoyed this game. Brought me the same nice feelings as Pokemon X did a few months before starting Yo-Kai Watch. Stopped after the befriending got to be too much of a grind. Overall, I'd recommend it highly. Very fun way to pass the time and explore. Everything feels rewarding!Updated 8.5 Years Ago

As an RPG, Yo-Kai Watch mostly fumbles its battle system and creates a relatively passive experience. However, I adored exploring every corner of its compelling world. The low difficulty ultimately works in its favor — I was always eager to move on to the next charming character or compelling idea. Yo-Kai Watch is a “kids’ game” that doesn’t talk down to or sugarcoat darker themes for kids, and I appreciated not being talked down to either.Updated 8.5 Years Ago
