Compared to 1, I love that everything has shifted to more of a gameplay focus. Hardly any story, compact hub, minimal water levels (even then, barely any swimming in them), more consistent level design, Yoshi adds some interesting interactions. I really admire how no nonsense it is and just tries to get you into gameplay as fast as possible. The only issue is that it has a much lower skill ceiling than say Mario 64 or Odyssey. However, you could say this game has the most inventive level design out of all of them so it doesn't matter.Updated 2 Days Ago

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is just as much fun as the first. Theres so many new galaxies, each with awesome theming and platforming challenges. The pacing is perfect and i was going to new galaxies constantly. I think that because there are more levels that are usually smaller than Galaxy 1’s, the levels arent quite as memorable, but they’re still expertly designed and ill remember so many of them. Galaxy 2 feels like it plays out on a smaller scale in the name of adding more content, which is perfectly fine for a 3D platformer where the gameplay is the main focus. Smaller setup, smaller hub world, smaller levels, but all just as good as the first game. The Wii pointer is also used in great ways, a lot more than the original. Overall i do like Galaxy 1 more, but its totally just a personal preference thing. I can 100% see why somebody else might prefer Galaxy 2. Its a phenomenal game!Updated 2.5 Weeks Ago

Basically an expansion of Galaxy 1.Good
- the drill item is fun to use
- yoshi is so fun to use.
- the visual, level, obstacle, enemy, and platforming design was incredibly creative.
- I like how the devs transitioned the pink moving platformers into 3D
- star ball stages are fun
- the platform flip using the spin attack was creative and fun.
- leading bomb-omb to blow up the glass ball was creative
- more creative gravity levels
- instead of just collecting coins for a star. Galaxy 2 has you to collect stars then a new planet is born, where there’s a bit of extra gameplay for you to collect the star.
Bad
- I prefer the hub world in galaxy 1, cause it felt like a home, and going into different rooms to enter levels. The classic hub world layout in galaxy 2 feels too concrete and boring.
- the game is brain dead easy. Only thing that kept me going through the levels was the amusing, creative platforming. And the unique level, enemy, and obstacle designs.
- Where’s Rosalina? I connected a lot with her in the first game from her life story in her story book. Now she’s nowhere in galaxy 2?

Like other 3D Mario games before it, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a three-dimensional platformer that showcases Nintendo’s unparalleled expertise in level design from start to finish. Galaxy 2 is more linear than its predecessors and even the first Galaxy, though that’s not a bad thing. It keeps the pace of the game fast, as do the relatively short levels and the linear world map. There are usually around two or three missions in each of the game’s almost 50 levels, each of which is unique and memorable. The flagship game mechanic of gravity isn’t all too impressive in moment-to-moment gameplay but it allows for amazing spectacle and creative level design that alone justifies its inclusion.Within those levels are also a lot of power-ups. Some return from Galaxy, though Galaxy 2 introduces a few new ones as well. The highlight of those is the Cloud Flower, which gives Mario the ability to place three clouds as platforms in the air, a genuinely useful ability in so many contexts that it makes it my favorite power-up in the entire series. But what’s shown off on the cover art is the ability to ride Yoshi, who has a few different transformations of his own. Gameplay with Yoshi is centered around the motion controls of the Wii Remote, which aren’t always perfect. Although I became pretty proficient with them by the game’s end, they made a horrific first impression and regular causes of frustration persisted throughout, though it’s far from a game-ruining experience.
Like the first game, Galaxy 2 has a booming orchestra for every single song that makes the game feel climactic, freeing, calm, and whatever other emotions the situation calls for. Of these, “Bowser’s Galaxy Generator” was a highlight that swept me off my feet when it first kicked in. And the final boss at the end of the level in which that song plays is incredibly fun, memorable, and cinematic, though unfortunately it is far too short and ends right as it is getting really good.
Even without its super-hard final challenge — unlocking it requires collecting not only all 120 stars but then finding 120 Green Stars throughout the game’s worlds, which I didn’t do — Galaxy 2 brings a welcome challenge. It’s not too hard, of course, but I certainly died a healthy number of times and it stopped the game from feeling too easy. And, combined with everything else, it makes it clear to see how Galaxy 2 is the favorite of so many people. Yes, of course it could benefit from a modern control scheme. But it doesn’t need that to be the masterpiece that it is. It isn’t my favorite 3D Mario game, but Super Mario Galaxy 2 is worthy of all the praise it gets. And its constant creativity and stream of new ideas showcases the best of what Mario, and video games as a whole, have to offer.

Mario Galaxy 2 is more Mario Galaxy but with more fun power ups and a more streamlined hub world and yet it kinda feels like it's missing the X-Factor that made the first game special. Mario Galaxy 2's story is much more simpler then the first and on one hand it's a Mario game so of course but on the other hand Rosalina's story in the first game was a small yet brought an emotional core to the game that other Mario games lack. It reminds me of this video called "The Quiet Sadness of Mario Galaxy" which really shows why the original game was so special even amongst the other 3D Marios. The Comet Observatory, it's music, each of the level selection areas and the moments of just stillness which really captures what draws us to the final frontier. Galaxy 2 in comparison is just more Mario which again is fine. Really picking which is better between Galaxy 1 or 2 depends on if you prefer atmosphere and story over quality of life.
Another problem I have with this (and Galaxy 1) is the amount of mandatory cutscenes especially the ones when finishing a level. It's just a bit too much especially when you just want to drop back into a level. In order there's power star animation -> return to starship mario -> "You got a star" message -> "you got starbits" message -"galaxy complete" message > "A new comet has appeared" message > chance of a cutscene of a starship mario addition -> luigi cutscene if you played as him. I make it sound worse then it is since it's only like 20ish seconds every time. It's just annoying especially since everything else has been adjusted to be much faster so it sticks out more.
Finally there's this one nitpick, it feels like there's a lot more 2D sections in this game then the first. I don't know if that's true or not but that's the impression I got.
All that criticizing aside, Mario Galaxy 2 is still stellar. All the power ups are amazing additions and are incredibly fun to use, level design is top notch (Favs being Slimey Spring, Cosmic Cove and Flipsville), it feels great to jump around as Mario. And you can actually play Luigi easily enough this time.
Overall Mario Galaxy 2 is a superb Mario game that doesn't quite match the magic of the first Galaxy game.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a continuation and a celebration of it's predecessor and keeps on pushing the players whilst mixing joyful game play with charm. Unfortunately this game is buried under a complex set up: hooking up a modern TV to a a Wii console and all of the cables and paraphernalia required to play. Completing SMG2 gave me extensive joy and it just makes me wish that Nintendo would have brought this game along to the Super Mario 3D stars. It's a shame that at the moment this is the only possibility to play this game. It will take years for it to arrive to the Nintendo Online Service and many more for it to be even considered for a remaster. For now it was a good time to come back to this game and enjoy all it has to offer.

It took me 2,5 hours to finish the final challenge, but it was worth it: the game is so creative when it comes to level design and has the most banging soundtrack in all of 3d Mario games, but most importantly it's just fun to control and master the mechanics trying to find faster and cooler ways to finish a level. The only problem is the annoying rejection of a story and therefore lack of cohesiveness of the vision and the final product present in the first Mario GalaxyUpdated 5.5 Months Ago

Mario Galaxy 2 is a perfect sequel to a perfect game. Objectively I think both games are about equal, but I prefer Galaxy 2 due to the better level designs and use of power ups. The green stars are also a nearly perfect way to have post-game content. There are 120 of them, but they are much faster to get while still being a challenge, and they aren't identical to the original star locations like Galaxy 1, so they feel like they are worth getting. While a few of the stars are absolutely atrocious *cough (perfect run) and the controls can be a little wonky, it's still a 10/10 for me because you can't expect any game to be literally perfect.Updated 6 Months Ago

I was a disbeliever at first. No way could this be as good as the original, but I was so wrong. There is constantly new and exciting stuff being introduced to you, yet it is never overwhelming. Every single level (even the multiple stars within a planet) is full of creativity and new ideas while never being overbearing. The hub/ship was also a banger. I loved how as you progressed you unlocked more areas/people on your ship. There was an awesome sense of progression with it.Updated 6 Months Ago

I loved the first Galaxy for its classically Mario innovative gameplay (although lack of Yoshi) and most importantly, a Mario game's first use of Orchestral OST. Galaxy 2 is more or less as fun and innovative as 1 with the addition of Yoshi being usable on certain stages.Updated 6.5 Months Ago

Pretty outstanding 3D platformer to this dayHas some awesome level design expanded off of Galaxy 1 but there are some problems that prevent it from being perfect
The gimmick levels are mostly not very fun - Rolling ball ones are OK but the flying glide levels are atrocious
Mini games with the chimp are pretty fun like ice skating into the enemies and getting a high score off hitting them and collecting coins
The rolling rock mushroom isn't very fun to use but the cloud power-up is amazing for level design and one of the best Mario power-ups ever
Yoshi is really fun to use and his ability to lick flowers to navigate was cool
Although green stars can be a little tedious to collect, 100% offers a solid challenge in Grandmaster Galaxy, one of the more difficult Mario levels made especially with the Perfect Run Trial
The music is phenomenal - Up there with some of the best VGM of all time
Definitely a top 3D Mario platformer - If you liked Galaxy, you will still love this game, despite the lesser story

I must confess: I didn't like this game. I understand that I'm a minority here, but I dropped the game at 50% cause it felt like non-stop grinding. I played this one after Odyssey and maybe because of that it gelt backward. I just wasn't having fun.Pros:
- Cool concept of galaxies and start eating crystals to become planets. Astrophysics for kids.
- Catchy tune at the cute Mario's head shaped starship
- Creative levels (my favorite one is with giant Goombas & coins)
Cons:
- I played on Wii U and this console ****. If I see this huge gamepad again I gonna vomit.
- Difficulty spikes destroyed all the fun. At a running level with caterpillars I died like 30 times or more.
- Motion controls ****. They are not accurate and make game so much harder than it needs to be. I hated levels with a flying bird for this reason (and swimming is also awful)
- You can't move camera. And every fall is deadly (you got **** in black holes). So the levels feel claustrophobic. You just don't see where you jump and you die and die and die.
- Some levels and bosses are so random to beat. I needed like 50 tries for a comet with crabs and like 20 times for a huge snake-boss on an asteroid. Just boo.
TLDR: I didn't enjoy the game at all. It is a pointless grind with awful controls.

Very good game, when it first came out, I thought it was better than Galaxy 1, but having replayed Galaxy 1 in 2020, and replaying 2 in 2023, I think Galaxy 1 was better. It was originally planned as an expansion to Galaxy 1, and it shows. More difficult than 1 in parts. I got every star in Galaxy 1, but stopped at the minimum 71 in this game, I was just satisfied with leaving it there. Still an essential Wii game.Updated 8 Months Ago

Updated 9.5 Months Ago

I enjoyed Galaxy 2 more than 1, but its not by a lot. I liked the variety to the levels, including 2d levels, new power ups and of course Yoshi. I liked the more linear hub world design, and the straight forward way of unlocking the next level, but the power star requirements were a bit too high. I liked that in Galaxy 1 I could just play what i wanted and if i needed more stars, i would just do some of the comets, but in this game, It felt like i needed a lot more stars, which hurt my feeling of freedom and choice. Either way the variety was very welcomed after Galaxy 1. Other than that i would say its just as good as the first one, if a bit better.Updated 1 Year Ago

Everyone says this game is a step up from the first Galaxy. It might be, however I barely recall playing the first one, and playing Galaxy 2 in 2023 was downright painful. From the beginning, I found the level design fairly good, and interesting. The gravity aspect of this subseries is interesting and leads to a lot of unique game play mechanic ideas. It also feels like there is a good variety of level styles and sub games.
However from the beginning of the game, it felt more like giant boss battles with absolutely terrible controls, more than anything else. I keep reading people's comments about the controls being fine- no, no they are not, they are terrible and single-handedly make this game a chore and un-fun.
The world boss battles also feel a bit recycled within the game, especially the Bowser battles.
Overall, probably my least favorite 3D mainline Mario title so far.

Every time I play Galaxy 2 I enjoy it less and less. The level design is much weaker than Galaxy 1, it lacks the soul of the first game and the amount of stars needed to continue is always frustratingly high. Despite all that though, this is still a fantastic game. It's just a 3D Mario that I don't feel like replaying too often.Updated 1 Year Ago
