If the AI was any better, this game would be a 10/10. There were just a few too many jank moments for me to call this perfect. But that said, I had a lot of fun, and I looked forward to playing this game once I finally started understanding it (which to be fair, isn't too hard, I was just slow...)Updated 9.5 Months Ago

This game improves on so many things that Pikmin 1 and 2 stumbled on, but at the same time, it is admittedly too short and easy to be considered wholly an improvement over Pikmin 2. It feels like development was rushed out of the door -- just as you get blue pikmin the game is virtually at Its end.I will sing many praises over what it does right over Pikmin 2 though.
Switching Pikmin works like how it always should have worked, the pikmin you select aren't randomly exchanged out for ones you didn't, they're only unselected once you've thrown them all, not when another Pikmin walks in front of them.
Lock-on makes it so that you can actually kite bosses while throwing, the cursor in general is far more reliable in this game.
Pikmin make more of a concerted effort not to walk into water, which was partially improves on from 1 to 2, but much moreso in 2 to 3.
Nectar isn't consumed entirely by one pikmin if they happen to walk into it, there's a limited amount but It's consumed properly.
There's many more QoL features and improvements.
What they crafted in Pikmin 3 is the formula of the original trilogy at It's peak, It's a shame Pikmin 4 doesn't seem to build off of it, because Pikmin 3 perfected the systems of 1 and 2, it just needed to a bigger and more complete adventure a la Pikmin 2. Alas, I look forward to seeing how Pikmin 4 plays. I would rate Pikmin 3 about on par with 2.
Strong to decent 7.

Pikmin 3 is a truly excellent RTS-Adventure-Action-Whatever game that refines the series' core strengths to a polished sheen and expands on nearly all of the previous games' core systems in such a way as to bring out the joy of multitasking. The main campaign is more directly structured around completing objectives for progression rather than merely needing you to collect a certain threshold of items like the prior two. The various fruits found across the game are instead used as a sort of timer: You need to have at least one bottle of juice made from the fruits on hand to continue to the next day, and while it's easy to collect enough of them to have a large buffer to outrun the clock with, the juice rations still provides a softer form of the tension the 30 day limit that was so central to the first game, and there's a great rug-pull moment in the last third of the game that will catch unprepared players by surprise even if they have a massive juice buffer. Five varieties of Pikmin are available for use in the campaign, including the new Rock Pikmin (which deal more damage when thrown and can break glass) and Winged Pikmin (which can fly over water, track flying enemies with ease and take shortcuts when carrying objects). While both of them are very strong and broadly useful throughout the game, neither come close to being overbearing, and the other three units remain useful throughout the game. White and Purple Pikmin from 2 also appear in the game's mission mode, and while the Purples are strangely vitiated they both provide interesting applications for the score-attack oriented multitasking gameplay of the mode.
Throughout the game you can use three different characters, expanding on the 2 in the last game. You can now throw the other captains like you do the Pikmin and order anyone who isn't being controlled by the player to move to different areas autonomously. Both of these changes heavily encourage the player to split the group up and complete tasks at the same time, which is relatively inefficient to do with the second captain in 2. When paired with the new option to restart from any previous ingame day, this makes it incredibly fun and accessible to go back through the game and try to clear the game in as few days as possible.
The campaign is a little short if you don't opt to find all of the fruits, and can feel a little constrained at times since it continues to introduce new mechanics until right before the final area, but it remains an immensely fun, satisfying and replayable experience. The mission mode is even better: 30 extra stages where the player is put on a strict timer to either collect every treasure in sight or defeat every enemy on the map with a mostly preset selection of Pikmin. This setup allows all seven different unit types to shine and prominently features enemies and mechanics that don't get a lot of play in the main game. While getting a passing grade on the stages isn't very hard, actually clearing out the map requires a good grasp of how to multitask, what order to do certain tasks, how to best split the captains up and which Pikmin is best for doing what task. Aiming for Platinum medals on these mission mode stages is Pikmin at its best; a puzzling strategy action game that gently prompts you to find the smartest way to clear the level in as short a timeframe as possible without being overtly punishing.

[review in progress..

Very fun game that got me into Pikmin. The story mode, while short is still very enjoyable. The multiplayer is incredibly fun. However the best part of the game is easily mission mode. It's super addicting grinding out high scores. Overall, my biggest complaint with this game is the difficulty. It's easier than it needs to be and would benefit from a hard mode. Otherwise, it's a really solid game that I recommend.Updated 1 Year Ago

Great game but doesn't come close to where I felt Pikmin 2 was. Was very enjoyable and had great graphics and OST but the controls didn't feel as responsive as the New Play Control series. Wish they didn't get rid of the ability to lead Pikmin, doing a "charge" was never reliable enough to feel good.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

Pikmin 3 is one incredible game. It leaves everything that was wrong in Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2. Bringing quality of life improvements to AI of the pikmin, graphics, and music. One of the biggest improvements from Pikmin 2 is no caves. Sure, caves where pretty fun, however, the repetitiveness of them made it a hassle to complete every single one. Another big thing they brought back and emphasized on is the scenery. WOW this game is beautiful! The nature in pikmin in perfect.
Do not miss out on how incredible this game is.

So, everyone who plays Pikmin and subsequently talks about Pikmin always talk about how great is Pikmin. well, I'm here to tell you, that they are 100% correct. I was skeptical at first, the art style didnt really click with me, and I didnt know what to expect, but I was really blown away by the creativity of the gameplay. it's ultimately a RTS, that focusses itself on time management. you have to figure out how to best use your time, and it makes each new day engaging, always driving you to be better. And the extra challenges really help you refine your skills and understand what you're really capable of. It's hard to describe, just go! go and play it and see for yourself why Nintendo needs to make more of these!Updated 3.5 Years Ago

I wish I could give this a 95% instead of just 90 or 100. The only negative I have for this game is that I just wish it had gone on longer. It took me 20 hours to beat which is still a pretty good value! But I just felt like I was getting started with all the different Pikmin types. After never finishing Pikmin 1 or 2, I was very satisfied with both this game and myself. The goal of the game was presented very well and the method of how you're able to continue playing was very interesting, even with somewhat of a sense of urgency. I did have a setback during my playthough that cost me almost my entire pikmin squad. However, I was able to spend only one more ingame day to get back to where I was and keep moving forward. There is 1 downside I can think of in that the game's story temporarily takes away all progress made towards a goal in the story, kicking the sense of urgency back to 100%. However, if you know what you're doing, it quickly becomes a non-issue and you eventually get back what you originally lost in addition to the progress you made without it.Updated 5.5 Years Ago

Like most Wii U entries in long-standing series, Pikmin 3 is a bit of an odd duck. The genes are the same as the earlier Pikmin games but the slight mechanical change-ups make a world of difference. Being able to switch between 3 characters at will and set automatic locations for them to go to is a huge improvement for a strategy series. At the same time, I was slightly disappointed in its implementation for 2 reasons. One: some puzzles require all 3 captains to be present, so if you spread them out for multiple tasks, you'll inevitably hinder yourself. Two: it's not very feasible to tell your captains to automatically move over long distances, because if their path happens to pass any enemies, you can lose a whole bunch of Pikmin in one fell swoop. Until I got used to this, I was resetting a lot of days where I lost 30+ Pikmin. Aside from those two issues, I had a very nice time with the game. I think I prefer the atmosphere of the first two games more than the character and story-based approach they took with this one, but the writing was fairly funny in its own way.Updated 6 Years Ago
