Where's everyone currently at? I've since completed Max Payne, but have yet to finish the others. I'm so sidetracked by Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and also just life in general lol.
I'm really close to finishing Final Fantasy X, but haven't played since like... Mid-January. I'll get back to it eventually.

I just got there today! So awesome, I'm really excited for the battle. Not excited for the Fort Condor minigame on hard mode though...

Are we getting some past FF antagonists as secret bosses? I just saw the Gilgamesh cutscene after getting Beck's Protorelic and I got so hyped.

Funny, I actually played this one for the very first time last month.
I was really liking the feel of it, but the length leaves me a little hesitant to delve in fully.

Recently I've been trying to finish up System Shock 2. It's a favorite of mine, but one I've never fully finished.
I started playing Ratchet & Clank about a week ago, too. I'm really enjoying it! I kind of thought it would be one of those series that you had to grow up with to fully enjoy, but I ended up playing it for three hours straight when I first booted up. I had Ratchet & Clank as a kid, but it stopped working pretty quickly and I never got to play beyond the first couple areas.

The Juice & Cozi's Co-op Playthroughs VII: Mario Kart Mania - Epilogue

I want to start this post with a brief update on our recent playthrough. Three days ago, on January 20th, I managed to unlock everything in Mario Kart Wii for the first time. Cozi and I finished our playthrough of Mario Kart Wii, and it's now that I can confidently say I enjoy the game. For the duration of this playthrough, I stuck mostly with Funky Kong (as soon as he was unlocked) because he's my favorite character on the roster. Cozi's go-to pick was Rosalina, who was already unlocked because of the Super Mario Galaxy save on the Wii. To get the full Mario Kart Wii experience, we used bikes the entire time as well. For me, it definitely took some getting used to, but in the end it's become so satisfying to successfully execute drifts on the bike. I may even say that it's become one of my favorite entries in the Mario Kart series, in stark contrast to my past opinion on the game. It goes to show that you should always be willing to give games another try every so often.

Now that I've provided that update, I wanted to stray off the main topic for a moment. Although this blog's purpose is to catalog and chronicle the cooperative game playthroughs of me and Cozi, I feel like I have to write for a moment about a game I've recently discovered. Going forward, I may interject with a paragraph or a post about my own game playthroughs. These stories will be marked with their own titles, separate from the main post.

The Juice's Side Story I: Diving with The Amigos

Last year was a huge year for my gaming hobby. I finished more game playthroughs than ever before, by a large amount. It felt good to be completing games at such a high rate. Being someone who suffers from ADHD, it's rare that I find consistency in setting my mind to a task and completing it, especially with games. I flip-flop from game to game, only going back to finish up after a year's worth of procrastination. But in 2023, something was different. Maybe it was something in my diet, or my conditioner. Maybe it's Maybeline?
Which brings us to now, the start of 2024. I've hit a dead halt. Stuck in a rut, I can't seem to find any games I'm in the mood to play. I browse my shelf two times over, and although there are many games I see and think about playing, nothing jumps out at me. Out of frustration, I say "enough is enough." I grab a random game that intrigues me and boot it up before I can stop or distract myself. This game happened to be Everblue 2, a scuba diving adventure game made by Arika of Street Fighter EX fame. Ocean settings in video games have always been a favorite of mine, and this game heavily involves the beach/island setting. The game starts with your character crash landing on an island, and being introduced to a group of divers called The Amigos. After making friends with them, you start diving for items with them, and helping the island locals by diving for things they want or need. While diving, you can explore the ocean, see aquatic life, collect items, and get killed by sharks. I would describe this section of the game as an ocean dungeon crawler. It's the most unique game I've played in a long time.
This game has really sucked me in, which really caught me off guard considering the amount of time this game sat on my shelf and I hadn't so much as given it a passing glance. I've already sunk seven hours into the game, and I'm nearing the end. Luckily, this game has a substantial amount of post-game side content to keep you playing long past the story's completion. I won't go into many other details about the game beyond the primary diving mechanic, I just wanted to write a small paragraph about this game because I've never heard another person talk about it before. I feel like this is a gem that has flown under the radar of many for too long. If you ever find yourself a chance to play Everblue 2, I would absolutely recommend you do so.

Now that I've gushed for a short time about Everblue 2, I'll wrap this post up. Now that we're finished with Mario Kart Wii, we'll be looking for a new game to start playing. I can't say for sure which game it'll be, but I can promise that I'll provide an update once we begin!

Until then,

The Juice & Cozi's Co-op Playthroughs VI: Mario Kart Mania

Alright guys, this post is gonna discuss a very sensitive and controversial topic, known for causing heated debates far and wide across the world. This post is going to discuss Cozi and I's favorite Mario Kart games.

Let me bring you back to the year 2008. George Bush's presidency was coming to an end, the economy was in shambles, The Dark Knight was storming theaters, and the country had just seen the release of Mario Kart Wii for the Nintendo Wii.
It was in this year that I first played Mario Kart Wii, and it just so happened to be at Cozi's house. At this point, I considered myself quite the veteran at Mario Kart, having played both the Nintendo 64 and GameCube entries beforehand. We started the game up and promptly began a race, excited to play the new Mario Kart. It was, unfortunately, very soon before I felt like something was... off. "Why does it feel so slow? So floaty?" I thought to myself.

"This isn't how Mario Kart is supposed to feel..."

That singular thought would resonate with me for years afterwards. Whenever we played Mario Kart Wii, all I could focus on was how different it felt compared to Double Dash. Whenever someone would say that it was their favorite entry in the series, I would wonder "why? How can you prefer Mario Kart Wii over Mario Kart: Double Dash?" It became a topic of debate between Cozi and I for many years.

Now let's go back to a more recent time: the evening of Christmas Eve 2023.
Cozi, BIGFATASS and I were looking for a game we could all play together. We had just got home from our family gatherings, and it was time to get inebriated and play a video game. After some browsing, I realized something; that very moment was 20 years to the date that I first got my GameCube, with a copy of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! It was decided then that we would play it in honor of the anniversary.

"Yeah, I really wanna like Double Dash..."

Funnily enough, Cozi and I had similar opinions on each other's favorite Mario Kart games.
Let me take you back to 2008 once more. I promise it will be quick. Shortly after playing Mario Kart Wii for the first time and feeling underwhelmed, I decided to introduce Cozi to my favorite Mario Kart. Thanks to the Wii's backwards compatibility, this would be easy. The next time I visited his house, we played some Double Dash. Much to my dismay, Cozi didn't like it. The turns felt too sharp, the controls were too tight, he said. I couldn't believe my ears! This was heresy to me, to demean and dislike my favorite! Ever since that moment, we were always divided on Mario Kart.
Finally, we're back once again to Christmas Eve 2023, in the evening, playing Mario Kart: Double Dash. We picked the All Cup Tour, every track in the game in random order. As the first race on Luigi Circuit began, Cozi felt at home because of the track's return in Mario Kart DS. But if Cozi was feeling at home, it would be Double Dash's tight controls that would soon kick Cozi out of that home and slam the door in his face. Before long, I could see on his screen that he was swerving around, crashing and bumping into obstacles and walls all over. I assured him, with time, he'll warm up to it. Throughout all 16 races, I kept my eye on his screen, watching him slowly improve. By the end, he decided that our first playthrough of 2024 would be this game, and we would be unlocking everything for completion.

Surprisingly, it didn't take long, either! Within just a couple days of practice, Cozi was placing 1st in Mirror Mode cups. He really came around to enjoying Double Dash. As I type this, we've been finished, unlocking the Parade Kart just a couple days ago. We've now decided to turn the tables, and I am going to hop into Mario Kart Wii to unlock everything. We are determined to bury the hatchet on our decade old Mario Kart debate!

An update will follow on this soon enough. Wish me luck and lots of fast staff ghosts.

Until then,

THE JUICE

Happy New Year everyone, from The Juice & Cozi!

Apologies for the long distances between blog updates, I've had to take a break to focus on earning a certification for my education career! So Cozi and I have not done a co-op playthrough since around October. But with the new year rolling around, we've decided to pick back up on it. We're currently discussing our options and deciding on what 2024's first playthrough will be. We considered Final Fantasy XII, but decided against it due to the long story. However, I think I'll be picking that one up in my personal free time. Seems like a really enjoyable game!

Also, I wanna ask everyone: with the amazing year of gaming 2023 was, what was your game of the year?
My game of the year was Final Fantasy XVI. I fell in love with the action RPG gameplay, the roster of characters, and the intriguing story. Clive is now a favorite protagonist for sure. Cozi's game of the year was Super Mario Wonder, a game we partially played together. I still have to finish it (in true Juice fashion, I left off on the final world and haven't gone back.) It really brought the fun and imagination back to the Mario series, and we're both looking forward to the follow-up.

Stay tuned in 2024 as Cozi and I pick back up on our playthroughs! We'd love to hear about yours, as well.

I have 419/520 achievements for TF2. I definitely used one of those things to get some of the achievements, I remember having to log on to a certain server. Might be harder to find now after the matchmaking update.

The Juice & Cozi's Co-op Playthroughs V: Update

Hey guys, apologies for the long silence. Posts will definitely be less-frequent for some time, as my attention is highly focused on other things at the moment. I'm sure this won't disappoint anyone but I figure I may as well say it regardless. Anyway, I wanted to make a post to catch up and talk about what we've been playing since the last post.

Last time, we had just started Silent Hill 2 to celebrate the start of the Halloween season. To the surprise of nobody, Cozi wound up enjoying the game and we were able to quickly finish it. After this, I went on to beat it 3 more times on my own LOL. This game is total perfection.
Since completing Silent Hill 2, we also managed to complete Sonic Superstars on PlayStation 5. It was better than we expected, for sure. Cozi and I both felt that the final boss fight was the weakest part of the game. Overall, the game was really fun! Strangely, it doesn't feel like they put much thought towards optimizing it for cooperative play, despite cooperative play being a big selling point.
On my own, I've completed a slate of games (along with a few replays) that would take a long time to talk about individually, so I'll only mention a few.
The Metroid series is one of my favorite franchises, and I've played almost every game in the series. However, up until this year, I'd never actually beat a full Metroid game. I had definitely come close with a few entries, but never all the way. This year, I managed to finally finish Metroid Prime, Metroid Fusion, and Super Metroid. Really been in the mood to play games this year!
Along with replaying Silent Hill 2 numerous times, I was actually able to get my super-scratched, rarely-working copy of Silent Hill for the PlayStation to load past the Antique Shop (it took fucking months) and I got to finish that as well.
I have actually broken my personal record for most game completions in one year. The previous record was 2020, with 15 game completions. This year I've completed 21 games, and I'm on track for at least 2 more completions. The co-op playthroughs with Cozi have been one of the major influences in helping me scratch this many games off my backlog. It's become habitual now that when one of us is playing a game, we're either passing off the controller, playing split-screen, or just watching the game while the other plays.

Yet another fine example of video games bringing people together!
Until next post,

The Juice & Cozi's Co-op Playthroughs IV: 50 Days of Halloween

Everyone in my household is excited for this time of year, the time that the Halloween season begins creeping upon us. Today marks 50 days until Halloween, but the excitement was too much for Cozi and I. We got a little bit of an early start last night, beginning a playthrough of Silent Hill 2, my favorite horror game. Cozi has never played a Silent Hill game, but has shown interest for some time, so we figured this would be a great game to start for the season. We are looking to complete as many horror games as we can during this countdown to Halloween. Some titles on our radar also include Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Metroid Fusion, and Resident Evil.

Since the last blog post, we haven't done much co-op gaming, save for our nightly games of Team Fortress 2. I had been finishing a playthrough of Resident Evil 4, one that I'd put down at chapter 4-1 a couple years ago and never got around to continuing. Fortunately, I can now say I've finished it. It's safe to say our Pokemon FireRed playthrough is on-hold for now, so that we can put our time towards horror games.

Cozi will be starting off the Silent Hill 2 playthrough. Since he's never played the game before, I want him to get the fullest experience possible, although I do want to hop in at least a few times (it's a favorite!) He got a couple laughs out of the voice acting during the intro, survived the disorienting journey into town, and made his way into the Wood Side Apartments, where we left off for the night. Tonight, we look forward to playing some more; hopefully we can make it through the apartments and toward the next goal: Rosewater Park.

Thanks for reading our catch-up post, and look forward to our adventures throughout the 50 Days of Halloween!

Until then,

The Juice & Cozi's Co-op Playthroughs III: The Competitive Queue

I've mentioned here previously that Cozi and I have been playing our fair share of Team Fortress 2 as of late. Both of us have been playing the game for years, but not until very recent were we able to consistently play together. Now that we can, we have been taking most available opportunities to do so.
Team Fortress 2 is my favorite video game; I love the fast-thinking teamwork and strategy involved, as well as fluid controls, and the solid gunplay (except for the ever-mysterious TF2 hitreg.) It's been difficult to play it consistently over the years, due to my lack of PC or laptop with the ability to run the game. Sometimes I would just boot it up on my inferior, slow, old laptop, just to give it a try. The game would chug and stutter, but I'd push through out of sheer love. Luckily, this is no longer a problem. I finally have an up-to-date laptop easily capable of running Team Fortress 2. This opened the opportunity for me and Cozi not only to play together, but learn the game further together.

Cozi and I have always been somewhat competitively-driven in video games. While Cozi mainly likes to compete in fighting games, I preferred FPS games, although we have each delved into the opposing genres competitively at one point as well. We both like to learn a game's advanced techniques and study up on winning gameplay strategies. It makes the games more fun for us both, and Team Fortress 2 is certainly no exception.
Team Fortress 2's competitive scene, while definitely not at the forefront of eSports, is still quite active. There are popular leagues, and pick-up games still happen weekly, available for anyone with a competitive taste to join. While we're not quite ready to throw ourselves into a pick-up game, or PUG as the players will call them, we have been getting some much-needed practice in TF2's built-in competitive matchmaking queue. Although it's not the best resource available, we want to give ourselves a familiarity with playing in the 6v6 format without signing up and hopping into PUGs.
If you're not someone who plays TF2, I can explain why the competitive matchmaking queue isn't the greatest. Firstly, the maps and gamemodes are not limited like the standard TF2 6v6 matches. Capture the Flag on ctf_turbine, for example, is not played in standard competitive 6v6 matches; but it's available to play in TF2's built-in competitve matchmaking. Secondly, there are no banned weapons or class caps, which means some strategies not available in a standard competitive TF2 match can be used. This means that some of the matches you'll find in the competitive matchmaking queue will not be what you would expect from an actual competitive match. At the end of the day, it really depends on what kind of people you get on your teams. Our last play session, in fact, is a great example of both wanted and unwanted players.

We found our competitive matches quicker than usual last night. On an average night, we might have to wait anywhere from 15-20 minutes to find just one competitive match. This is due to most players strictly queueing for casual mode, although from my experience, a good 40% of those casual mode players will play casual like it's competitive. To those players, I say stop queueing casual and micromanaging your teams. Please join the tryhards in competitive mode, we need the players. I always load in before Cozi, and once loaded in I was greeted by one teammate, an Engineer. The map in this game, cp_metalworks, is one of my favorites, so I'm excited for the coming match. As the rest of the players began to load in, one of the other team's players selected Sniper, spawning in with a hot pink costume that I admired in chat.

"nice loadout" I said, as the player's character model stood perfectly still, eyes forward.

"Lil Endian is a cheater, btw" Someone on the other team chimed in.

Lil Endian was the name of the hot pink Sniper I had just been looking at. Another person, this time on our team, spoke up.

"yeah notoriously"

As the Sniper continued to stand there, idle, I opened the pause menu to try and create a vote to kick out the cheater. Unfortunately, in TF2's competitive mode, you cannot vote to kick out anyone, as the feature is disabled. We accepted our fate, realizing the hacker is going to lend his team an easy win. Weirdly, the hacker openly confessed to cheating and didn't seem to care.

"time to cheat" He said in chat.

I tried to think of something to do. Quickly, I switched from Soldier to Scout, my alternate class. Scout is fast and agile, with a double jump and the highest run speed. I figured maybe, if the hacker was distracted by having to snap onto another teammate to kill them, I could run toward him through a flank route and kill him quick, giving our team some time to push forward. What I didn't expect was what the other team did.
Once the game began, a Heavy from the other team ran up to my team's Medic with nothing but his fists.

"medic use me for uber" He said in chat.

A Medic who uses the Ubersaw as their melee weapon can build their Ubercharge by hitting someone. (Side note: for those who don't know, the Medic's Ubercharge is an essential part of a competitive game of TF2. Once charged, it gives around 8 seconds of invulnerability to whoever the Medic is healing at that time.) The Heavy was letting the Medic hit him to build our team an Uber, so we could push through, kill the hacker, and capture the point. Due to the heroic endeavors of this Heavy, we were able to defeat the hacker and, not only capture the point, but win the whole game. I'd also like to thank the Medic, who chose to Ubercharge my Scout.

The duality of teammates you'll find in TF2's competitive matchmaking can either make or break the match. Sometimes you'll have 2 spies, sometimes you'll have an AFK player, sometimes you'll have a hot pink hacker. But last night, we learned that for every hot pink hacker, there's a Heavy with nothing but his fists who will let your Medic build an Ubercharge by attacking him.

Until next time,

The Juice & Cozi's Co-op Playthroughs II: The 9,999 Coin Wall

Tonight, me and Cozi picked back up on Pokemon FireRed. We left off in Celadon City's Game Corner, with one goal in mind: Porygon.
Porygon is, more or less, a pretty bad Pokemon; but I love him! He's my second favorite Pokemon, and I love to have him on my team. After a bit of consideration, and hesitation on Cozi's end, we decided to use Porygon anyway. The only requirement being 9,999 coins from the Game Corner's slot machines, much to our dismay.
We asked ourselves, "is it really worth grinding out 9,999 coins?" Maybe not, but we can't back down without at least a try.

"If this blows up in our face, I'm gonna fucking kill you." - Cozi, in regards to my passionate stance on keeping Porygon.

Surprisingly, the process wasn't all that painstaking. Not for me, at least. I sat on my laptop and played Team Fortress 2 while Cozi spent an hour and a half grinding out the coins. I'll give him credit, he's pretty good at lining the 7's up! We'd like to send a thank you to Mountain Dew for fueling the unnecessarily long grind session (Baja Blast to be specific.)
Porygon joins the party at level 26, and we decided to name him Quagmire. This brings our Pokemon FireRed party to:

Wartortle (The Juice)
Kadabra (Jeff Hardy)
Pikachu (Zazasmoker)
Porygon (Quagmire)

After all the slot machine grinding, we decided to leave off at that and pick back up tomorrow or the next day.
We let the night wind down with a few games of Team Fortress 2, our choice multiplayer game as of late, and my personal favorite game of all time. We were joined by another friend, playing some casual games of Payload. I may include future play sessions of Team Fortress 2 in these posts, chronicling our journey through the competitive side of the game. In case you're curious, I main Soldier, and Cozi is a Demoman main.

Our next post will detail our continued adventure through FireRed. We hope to pick back up within a day or two, so stay tuned.
Until then,

I am The Juice, and at the beginning of this year, me and my cousin Cozi decided to start actively playing through a game with each other, on the side of whatever we were playing by ourselves. Our thought was that it would incentivize us to play/complete more games, on top of just being fun. Now, 7 months later, I can say that it certainly did both.
Currently, we're in the middle of playing through Pokemon FireRed. If we're to finish it soon, it will be the sixth game we complete together. At first, the number doesn't seem like many, but each playthrough was enjoyable in its own way, and stands out in my mind. Adding the context that great memories were made with all six, the number seems more significant. I wish I had the idea to start this sooner so I could've catalogued more of the memories, but better a late start than never, I guess.
The previous games we played, in order, were:

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
New Super Mario Bros.
Sonic Adventure

and Pokemon Emerald

Our favorite so far has been Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. This game is one of my personal top 10 favorites, but Cozi had never really played it. It was an awesome experience to be able to show someone else with a blind view why I love the game so much. By the end, he had gained a major appreciation for the game, too. We had a blast passing off on missions, driving around and crashing into walls, and the occasional cheat-fueled flamethrower and RPG rampage. Disclaimer: cheats were not used to progress in the story. Remain seated.

Playing through Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga together proved to be humbling. This is a beloved game from both of our childhoods, but after revisiting it, we realized the nostalgia we hold for the game may have a bigger hand in our fond memories. In other words, it pissed us both off. This one caused some serious introspection from both of us.

Pokemon Emerald started a Pokemon phase in our playthroughs, which is why we're now halfway through Pokemon FireRed. Emerald is a favorite of Cozi's, but I'd never actually played it. I've played and finished Pokemon Sapphire, but never Emerald. I'll say that the playthrough left me with a better appreciation for the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald games, because I wasn't the biggest fan beforehand.
The playthrough also had an extra layer of fun added once we decided to nickname every Pokemon we obtained, leading our team to include members Gay Hulk, Triple H, and Boner Pill, to name a few.

FireRed has been no different, with the foundation of our team being a Squirtle named after me, The Juice.
The Juice, now a Wartortle, is joined by a Pikachu named Zazasmoker. The two have proven strong, helping us take down 3 gyms so far, but we've got a lot more to come. Stick with us to watch our team build overtime, and maybe even give us an idea for a name or two.

Thanks for reading my little introduction to our playthrough blog. Next entry will be the first proper one, and will be about our continued journey through FireRed. Until then, keep gaming.
