Amazing classic JRPG that reminded me of the games I enjoyed growing up. Some quality of life improvements, like the TACTICS allowing auto-combat, were really great. The traditional fantasy, power-of-friendship story was right up my alley and I smiled for much of the game. Pretty much loved all the characters and even though I’ve rolled credits, I’ve got to play the “post game” stuffUpdated 2 Weeks Ago

The story and characters are incredible. Despite the simple gameplay and grindy side missions, I believe the story for this game makes up for it in a huge way and proves that games can tell stories just as much as any other piece of media.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

post-ironic cliche tropes done right with some Yoko Taro influences (don't ask me why)ultimate bedtime fairy tale with great characters and fantastic vibes living in a world of Akira Toriyama's artwork
- music is a letdown but you have an option to use the DQ VIII overworld theme so do that
- default overworld music theme is rage quit inducing EAR CANCER
- i'd recommend using "stronger monsters" draconian option because the default game is too easy in the beginning
- Act 2 was a drag but for a reason
- Act 3 is not a "post-game"
- Act 3 is what really makes this game special and unique, it IS essential to the story and actually pretty amazing and extremely satisfying
- this game is better than final fantasy VII remake
could have been better if not the ear cancer music and strange difficulty curve, but you know what?

I think this is a very good game for an rpg. The bosses can get pretty nasty in difficulty. But thankfully it doesn't require you to get to level 99 if you just want to finish the main story. The characters are very fun, and the story was nice. There are some moments of trying to get a certain material or find a certain enemy for a quest which can be very annoying. Overall, the issues are minor and it certainly is a great rpg to play for fans.Updated 4 Months Ago

Act 1 was generic and boring, but the story in Act 2 is really interesting and at this point the gameplay picks up. However it's very long, and boring for the first 30 hours. If you like 90's era JRPG's, this is basically the only modern game with that type of gameplay. Best of the Dragon Quests, but can be improved if they allowed more skills to be learned earlier and if the later quests weren't such grind fests.

It's funny to remember now that within the first few hours I felt slightly disappointed. Dragon Quest is well known for being very conservative, but XI is the first official episode to bring absolutely nothing new to the series. I ended up considering that the answer, in fact, was perhaps there: almost 15 years after the last true Dragon Quest, Square Enix returned with a perfect synthesis of everything that the series is and doest best: epic storyline, characters quickly turning into good friends, old-school but refined gameplay, great music and Akira Toryama. Did we really need something else?Updated 5 Months Ago

Had to abandon Dragon Quest XI at 95% of completion...it's annoying that despite I'm at level 99 with all characters and have some of the best equipments in the game, in order to beat yet another secret boss of the game I have to spend like 20 hours at the game casino playing poker or the roulette getting tokens to acquire some materials. then I was supposed to spend other dozens of hours finding other materials in the dungeons where these materials pop up once per runThese are the things I hate about games...it's not about being able to play well, ability, or anything...just do stupid things to get stupid side-equipments that are used only for one specific boss. and even with that equipment, you need luck that the boss doesn't target specific members of the party otherwise you have to start all over again

I kind of ended the main story feeling kind of whelmed. While the story had some highs and interesting twists to the classic adventure story, it still felt very safe and unoriginal. The gameplay was also good but I wouldn't say it was exceedingly captivating. The characters were well designed and had cool backstories, but I didn't really connect with any of them.Updated 6.5 Months Ago

There is a lot to unpack here. The game is a great tribute to the series as a whole, and while it is quite a slow burn, its pacing is not bad at all. There are tons of things to do and most of them are fun (not you, pep quests, you suck). It is interesting how much this game draws from Final Fantasy X, which is also considered by many as a turning point in a franchise (although the equivalent to DQ 11 would actually be FF 9).
Sadly, most of the things that were taken from FFX are not really great. The sphere grid level up system was improved for DQ 11, and retains part of the individuality of each character, also being more rewarding to grind. The segmented, corridor-world however is a major step back from DQ 8. It sure is pretty, but claustrophobic and surprisingly dull. The world feels much smaller than it actually is, albeit harder to navigate.
The story has some major tonal shifts and mind bends, and sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, but mostly they fade into the hype of the next big thing. This might frustrate some, to me it just felt a bit like Dragon Ball, which is not bad, just unusual. It also made me think that maybe something that leaned more towards Dragon Ball would be an interesting new take for the series. But I digress.
Another step back in relation to DQ 8 is the Fun Sized Forge when compared to the Alchemy Pot. The forge does have its strong points, but they take very long to shine. That being said, there is no reason for one to eliminate the other, as they are not exactly do the same thing. It just feels like an unnecessary trade-off.
Coupled with this, we get the mobage-like equipment. This I just disliked in general. Why would a piece of equipment have 5% more efficiency agains an enemy type? I understand this might make a difference when talking huge damage outputs, but that's not the case in the first dozens of hours, where most of this type of equipment appears and can be improved on the forge. The same goes for skills, which also might be downplayed depending on the builds. Pieces of equipment, as they are ever so numerous, should be more meaningful. The alchemy pot had a partial solution for that.
Even with all the drawbacks, DQ 11 really shine by having a few charismatic characters, great atmosphere to the world and tons of things to explore. It does feel like much of it could have been better, but it's still one of my favourite entries in the series. It is definitely not DQ 8 or DQ 5, but it was a great return to form, and makes me look forward for the next iteration.

Dragon Quest XI has been clogging up my backlog for the last 5 years. I always envisioned it as this massive untouchable JRPG that I could never hope to conquer. And for may years that was the case. Never getting too far into the story and always hitting this wall where it seemed as if I wanted to continue, I would be forced to grind for hours on end. But readers, let me tell you I have finally climbed to the top of this mountain. I have seen the light of Yggdrasil for myself, finally after all this time. However, that light may be a little bit blinding. After spending nearly 60 hours with the game, my largest complaint lies in the fact that the story could have been told in half the time, if not even less so. A significant chunk of this game is told through cutscenes and lengthy scenes of dialogue, but there are many moments where the story feels like it is intentionally trying to draw out the length of a segment. If you cut all of the unneeded fat off of this game, you would save about 10-15 hours easy, and that's not including reducing the amount of repetitive gameplay either. It's crazy that a JRPG can still release these days and not have any time saving ways to cut down on grinding, or even different accessibility options. With that said, all of these being my biggest problems with the title, I still couldn't be more excited for DQXII. I hope to see the team improve what was done here, and hone it into something that I can truly call a modern masterpiece. DQXI is without a shadow of a doubt, a fantastic and wonderful experience. I'm so glad I finally got to see it for what it is, but even after going through it, I still don't know if I can say that it was worth all the time spent.Updated 7.5 Months Ago

I've heard people explain this game as JRPG comfort food. I think that's the perfect way to put it. The story is basic, the battle system is basic, the whole game is basic. But there's something enjoyable about it.I've played to a certain point in the game in English but I've replayed to the mid point in Japanese. There are definitely differences so it's hard for me to talk about the English version. However, if you want what is basically a bedtime story in long form this is the game for you.

Pretty fun, but I felt I was done after "beating" the game, but not moving on to the considerable end game. I know that it's a major part of the experience and I might get back to it eventually, but that was enough for now.It was very easy, but it allows you to skip battles by seeing enemies on the map. I basically skipped every single avoidable fight and was always at an appropriate level for a challenging but doable battle. Only 1 or 2 bosses required me to "catch up" by grinding a single level or two, and these were always because I needed a particular spell (a group heal, cure a status effect, etc., that I got at the next level up and was clearly assumed for the fight).

The culmination of the entire franchise; a modern gem with an expansive world, amazing characters, and a fulfilling narrative wrapped in the familiar Dragon Quest charm. The game fails to innovate much in terms of its combat, leaving late-game fights feeling a bit repetitive. However, it's hard to fault that simplicity--a mainstay of each installment.Edit: After completing the post-game, I need to affirm that this game is a true gem of the JRPG genre, and I have updated my rating from 95% to 100% to reflect that.
I rate games based upon how well they complete their own creative objectives. Dragon Quest 11 excels at everything it aims to do: amazing characters, a fully-developed story with consistent narrative themes, an incredible soundtrack, lush visuals, and the like, all delivered with consistent quality throughout the near 100 hour experience I had with this game. Even my earlier criticism--seen above--is negated by the actual late-game challenges I hadn't yet reached at that point.
Dragon Quest 11 is the perfect distillation of a franchise and genre in almost every way. This is a game that may become as seminal as the games that inspired it, at least I can hope so.
If anything, it deserves the distinction as the first Dragon Quest game to break through to western gamers.
Dragon Quest 11 is a modern masterpiece.

Played in 2023Stopped playing at the end of Act 2.
This was my 2nd Dragon Quest.
PROS
Embodies what classic JRPG are, without the unnecessary fluff a lot of modern game have.
A few great moments in the storytelling.
Visually neat.
Bestiary design.
CONS
Pacing issues. I really struggled to keep my motivation at the start of Act 2.
Side quests not really exciting.
Music is good but gets quickly repetitive.
Menuing still not optimal (but improved compared to old DQs).

There are no random encounters and the robust skill trees for each party member allow for a bunch of party experimentation and min maxing for those that want it.The thing I liked the most about the game is how happy it is.
