I played this game with my boyfriend, and overall id say we had a pretty good time. See, originally I wanted us to play it takes two, because not only is that a better game, but also probably better for us as a couple, however this one was on sale for about 6 dollars. I played this game with my little brother back when it first came out, so I knew the twist, and was a little worried at how this game would fair with us being a couple. Luckily this is a pretty decent coop game where we both had a bit of fun. I think the first half of this game is probably the best, where each level is a different coop puzzle that you and your partner have to figure out. I really think this game does a good job at coming up with creative problems for your team to solve, up until the 2nd half of the game. See, the 2nd half of the game is where id argue this game loses a lot of steam.

Up to this point, the story was just break out of prison, which is cool and fun, however after this is when the story really starts to get going and turns into a really typical 80s kinda plot. I like leo and vincent, however I cant say I really love either of them. A lot of the character in this game kinda comes from just how you and your partner interact with each other as the characters. I didn't love leo, however I do love my boyfriend, so that kinda helped attach myself to the character a lot more. The voice acting was really bad at parts, especially for vincent, and honestly its like this throughout the whole game. The ending does add a nice twist, however it doesn't really make a lot of logical or realistic sense if you think about it.

The 2nd half of the game kinda drops the ball with the coop stuff too, where it kinda goes turns into either shooting puzzles or stuff where only one of you is doing something and the other just kinda watches, which is fine. I do really like the twist at the end where it actually utilizes the mechanics of the 2nd half with the coop system as well as the attachment to your partner/the characters themselves. I do think the ending will trick a lot of people to like the 2nd half, however I think mostly the first half is much better.

Overall, I'm pretty mixed on this game. The characters and voice acting isn't great, the story is pretty mediocre and the gameplay doesn't really hold up towards the 2nd half. All of that aside however, this is just a really great game to play with someone you love. Sure, it may not be for everyone, but I had a great time playing this game with my boyfriend, and I'm sure he felt the same way.

Great character and story building, mechanics fun (even for a pair of uncoordinated idiots) and music was suited to each of the scenes crafted. Downside was no photo mode (so much pretty and cool photo ops missed) and the endings because sad sally here.

Amazing story and really sad ending. They did a great job making this coop game, the puzzles are great and they made some great cinematic shoots and scenes. It really feels like an 80s detective movie.

Not bad visuals and excellent dramatic plot, the rest, unfortunately, is average. Gameplay-wise A Way Out reminds Stray - you just walk around and press the action button when the icon appears, everything is maximally scripted, it's just impossible to do something "wrong"... except for a few episodes: there are shootouts, chases and stealth - the final ratio of "dull/fun" is probably 2/1, but even so the game feels quite cheerful. The main feature of the game, co-op, is not very impressive, but the story is very much so. The game can already be recommended at least because of the story, it is quite short, but really "exciting" and intriguing - hooks you from the first minutes and does not lose interest until the very end

Really enjoyable game with a really unique use of the two player split screen concept and a decent story. Story is kinda predictable , cliché and has minor inconsistencies + plot holes + plot armour and the gameplay also has some lagging issues + glitches and bugs but nothing serious enough to ruin the gameplay.

Fun game, coming back to this after playing It Takes Two really shows how far the developers have come. The co-op elements were okay, I think a realistic setting doesn't always lend itself to making great gameplay. Having two endings was neat although my brother was really made that Vincent was a mole the whole time and let Leo win. I think for me the Leo ending seems more satisfying than the Vincent ending but I appreciate that there is two endings for both characters. I also did not mind that there was not necessarily a true ending or anything, I think it makes for a narrative that sticks with you more.

I first played It Takes Two, from the same studio, some months ago. I was expecting to find some similarities between these two games. To my surprise, however, the similarities started right from the title screen.

There's much to applaud about A Way Out. I find their efforts for the, ahem, cooperative video games scene, so commendable. The experimentation in gameplay and mix of unique ideas is not just a selling point, it is the very essence of their titles. So for that alone, I'll always praise and play their works, because there are few studios working on that.

I still haven't made up my mind. For all intents and purposes, It Takes Two is the better game, if a little stretched thin. A Way Out has many mundane moments, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if there were some more substance to the rest of the game, the mundane wouldn't feel kind of empty. So I don't know which one I prefer just yet.

Some years ago, thinking about a game I'd like to create, I envisioned something like the experience this game offered me. Varied concepts, an interesting story, changing gameplay mechanics, action set pieces. I'm no game developer by any means, but this game kind of made me realize that idea would be extremely difficult to pull off. So I hope they keep on refining their craft.

This isn't a mediocre game, nor is it a GOTY contender (It Takes Two should have never won in 2021), but is an enjoyable, emotional, if sometimes too in-your-face and unrealistic, experience. I have to say, I didn't see the twist coming and was genuinely shocked, so that alone made it a little better for me. And the way the ending is handled feels very unique but fell short of greatness.

Played for 8 hours and 33 minutes through Xbox Game Pass.

An enjoyable coop experience, but strongly overshadowed by the 'It takes two' masterpiece.

+Movie homages are fun. Especially direct scenes from Oldboy and Scarface.
+The 70s aesthetic looks great.
+The coop aspect is fun.

-The dark and serious tone clashes with coop fun. Again, 'It takes two' balanced the tone and gameplay much better.
-The mechanics are too shallow. They're not bad per se and everything works fine. Also, that's cool that the game rotates mechanics quite often. Still, in many places, the game felt like a simplified Uncharted clone, which took me out of it.

Graphics below expectations and unstable frame rate, most of the time at 30 fps, in a few scenes slightly more. I understand that given the nature of the game maybe there are technical limitations, especially played locally, but they could have done a little more- (played local on xbox series s. Cute story and character development not bad. Environmental interaction quite high. Lots of variety in scenes, however a fairly slow game from a pacing standpoint. Pleasant enough to play with a friend. Too many bugs. Happened more than a few times to have to restart from the last checkpoint for various bugs, very annoying indeed.

Two dudes trying to escape prison with a common goal in getting revenge. Learning their background story and being committed to the relationship for each other. Series of actions and stealth throughout the 85% of the game. A lot of dialogue if you choose to interact in the world. A lot of mini games that you can play with your co-op player. Driving and shooting is subpar and wasn't too well polished.

Liked the pacing. Too much of nothing. Variety of gameplay mechanics. One moment it's a stealth escape, another moment it's trying not to die in a boat in a river, car chase.

Story, kept hooked to the plot, want to see what's next.

Relatively easy. Nowhere did I feel stuck.

Doesn't need a lot of attention or reflex. It's like slightly more involved than watching a good movie.

Played with a friend; we did not attempt to get achievements or linger around too much, although I would call it a leisure playthrough.

This game seemed ludicrous to me. It was fun to play together, but it's not exactly what I'd call a great game. Even the storyline that everyone lauds is totally absurd, as are most of the situations. We had a lot of laughs, although many of them were sort of at the expense of the game. :P

I won't talk about the story because I don't want to spoil it (even though it's silly).

The gameplay, however, is mostly full of quicktime crap. There are also a few scenes that are so vague and make very little sense or are poorly designed.
