The 100th Game of the Month Ranking Spectacular

It has been 8 and 4 months since the first Game of the month has taken place and throughout this time we have played through 133 games. Throughout this month I will be ranking the games by there:
-Length
-Thread Discussions
-Franchise counts
-Backlogged
-Completion
-Completion over backlogged
-Retirement
-Retirement as a percentage

-Personnal ranking

I ask people to use this thread to discuss there Favourite moments and games from the GotM. Games you wouldn't of picked up if not for GotM and perhaps your own personal ranking of the GotM games

Length

So we all here to find out the length of a game so of course the first ranking will be how long it will take to beat a game. To do this I used the Average game length for all playstyles. If you were to place all of the games in the GotM thread though it would take you 112 days 5 hours and 3 minutes of non stop play. Luckily the average length of the Game of the month games is 20 hours 24 minutes. Now without further due the ranking for all of the games:

I'll take the ones I've played through and rank them from least favorite to favorite.

#30 - Little Nighmares
I just wanted more from this game. It ended up being some fairly simple puzzles with light horror, and I got bored.

#29 - Borderlands 2
On paper I'm totally down for a grindy FPS with tons of weapons and upgrades, but I just hated all the stylistic choices made for this game. The characters are not funny, the cell shaded graphics gave me headaches, and the grind got boring quick.

#28 - Untitled Goose Game
It was okay. Fun for an hour or so, but then it just felt like simple puzzles with no real dynamic interactions.

#27 - Hitman (2016)
I can appreciate these games (considering I've played the entire trilogy), but I just don't find them particularly engaging. My main gripe is a lack of interesting story or characters, though I know that's not what the game was going for necessarily.

#26 - Prey (2017)
Really cool world and environments, but the combat felt very underdeveloped. By the end I was ready to be done.

#25 - Doom (1993)
Great game for its time, and has aged pretty well, but I can't put it higher against games that were more engaging for me.

#24 - Outlast
Decent horror title that had me engaged from beginning to end, though most of the engagements felt too scripted.

#23 - Doom (2016)
Great combat and levels, but just not my cup of tea. I'm not huge on unnecessary gore.

#22 - Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice
Had some interesting levels and mechanics, though felt a little too simple by the end.

#21 - Banjo Kazooie
Donkey Kong 64 > Banjo Kazooie

#20 - Bioshock 2
Good game with fun skills and level design, though it felt inferior to the first.

#19 - Celeste
I'm not generally into side scrollers, but this game was very good. Would be higher on my list if it was more my type of game.

#18 - Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order
Combat was pretty good, but I loved the level design and Worlds. Dark Souls did it first though, and better.

#17 - Bioshock
A masterpiece in some ways, but lacking in others for me. The characters are all interacted with through calls and tapes and the looting is too aggressive.

#16 - Beyond Good and Evil
Hard to describe, but very fun. A surprisingly original puzzle platformer.

#15 - Zelda A Link to the Past
Great dungeons. Overworld was a bit tedious though.

#14 - Fallout 4
Open World RPGs are my favorite type of game and though this one wasn't the best Fallout, it's still a great game.

#13 - Dragon Age Origins
Great characters, writing, and quests. Combat was a little too tedious.

#12 - Lost Odyssey
Surprisingly solid JRPG. Better than many of the Final Fantasy games in my opinion. Very well worth a playthrough.

#11 - A Plague Tale Innocence
Great story, characters and gameplay. No complaints really, I just can't put it in my top 10 against the rest of the games on this list.

#10 - Shadow of the Colossus
No other game like it. Some of the most epic boss battles ever. The game needs something more outside of those bosses though.

#9 - Dead Space
A thrilling horror title that does not let up. Only complaint is enemy variety and overuse of enemies taking away from the horror by the end.

#8 - The Outer Worlds
I love the level design and writing. Not the most polished game, but feels like a classic yet original open world RPG.

#7 - Resident Evil 4

#6 - Zelda Breath of the Wild
The best and most unique sandbox open world RPG out there. I just wish it had more characters, dialog, and story.

#5 - Alan Wake
A thriller title with horror elements that absolutely nails the atmosphere. I can't stop coming back to it.

#4 - The Evil Within
In many ways this and the sequel are better than Resident Evil in my opinion. Each level is unique and changes up the variables so that the game always feels fresh. Great DLC too.

#3 - Alien Isolation
The levels look plucked straight out of the Alien movies. The AI is phenomenal and adds so much to the scare factor. This game is near perfect in my opinion. Where's the sequel?

#2 - Soma
I'm realizing many of these top ones are horror games. I'm generally not biased towards them, I guess that's just how this ranking worked out based on the games in the list. Soma is my favorite horror title with perfect atmosphere, unique enemies, level design, and story. It's everything a horror game should strive to be.

#1 - Elden Ring
One of the most engaging experiences I've had while playing a game. Once you get going there's no stopping. It's hard, but there always feels like something you can do to progress. It feels like 5 games worth of content stuffed into one.

I'll take the ones I've played through and rank them from least favorite to favorite.

Great list with great games. Hard to disagree with anything there. Love the horror picks, those are some of my favorites.

Turns out I haven't finished a lot of GoTM games. Didn't even reach 10, although I guess that'll change when I finish Persona 5.

Here's my quick ranking:

9. Donkey Kong Country
Difficulty is imbalanced between levels and bosses and I wouldn't have been able to beat it without save states.

8. Super Mario World
More reasonable levels of difficulty but I still used save states.

7. Untitled Goose Game
A fun short puzzle game that had an unnecessary and unfun speedrun mode that stopped me from 100% it.

6. Live A Live
Fun gameplay and a great interconnected story. The gameplay takes a bit of a hit in the last two chapters though.

5. Hollow Knight
A really fun Metroidvania with deep lore. It's just way too difficult for me and can get quite frustrating.

4. Ori and the Blind Forest
Another solid Metroidvania but this one isn't frustrating and the mechanics are really fun to cheese around with.

3. Celeste
The very emotional and impactful story compliments the difficult but doable gameplay well.

2. Hitman 2016
It has a mysterious and interesting story combined (mostly) with fun levels that have a lot to explore and a bunch of extra side challenges you can do to spice up the game.

1. Super Mario Galaxy
Best Mario game of all time, amazing story, gameplay and especially atmosphere.

I’m always kind of proud my nomination for Final Fantasy VII did so well. Granted it was at the perfect time to succeed right before the remake came out and when lots of people were quarantined from Covid.

I've played 17 16 games that were covered by Game of the Month but I was only officially part of 5. I'll include them anyway; sorry if that's cheating.

1 - Okami
I just loved everything about this game. The characters, art style, folklore... when the game went into "overtime" I was actually happy because I wanted to keep going.

2 - Odin Sphere
I've replayed the original version many times even though the PS2 version lagged in some bits. The fairytale aesthetics and feel draws me in every time.

3 - Persona 5
I do love Persona 5 but for some reason Persona 4 just drew me in more. Not sure why.

4 - LOZ: Breath of the Wild***
Haven't finished this yet but I do love it. I have some complaints *coughGYROSCOPEcough* but I have gotten into it and I look forward to playing it again when I put it down.

5 - Resident Evil 4
I'm really glad this was my first Resident Evil game because it moved me to want to play the rest of the main series. This helped me at least start into horror games.

6 - Journey***
A peaceful game for me. I was lucky enough to finish the game with the same person the first time I played so it was overall just a good experience.

7 - LOZ: Majora's Mask***
It's a little special to me because I set out with the expectation that it would be retired. I not only finished it but collected all of the masks. Used a guide, but I didn't hate doing so. The sidequests really do make this game.

8 - Final Fantasy VII***
Don't get me wrong, it's a great game and had some great plot twists. I just don't have the same connection that other fans seem to have. Maybe I had to be there when it first came out.

9 - Beyond Good & Evil
I can't quite remember if I finished this. I remember playing some of it and did like it, but it might be one that I just dropped and never returned to. I've seen my sister replay this several times and do like the characters and the story. I should go back to it someday.

10 - MediEvil
Enjoyed this more than MediEvil 2, but going into this game with the rough controls was, uh, rough.

11 - Celeste
Yes, I used the assist menu. But only when I got close to the last part of the game so hopefully that counts for something. I made it farther than I would have expected without it though, and just that was satisfying.

12 - A Short Hike
A cozy game to be sure, but not one that I feel the need to go back to.

13 - Alien: Isolation
Wish I could have gotten farther in this but I stink at stealth. Great atmosphere, I felt like something was out to get me everytime I breathed.

14 - LOZ: Link to the Past***
I'm glad I played and finished this. So why is it all the way down here? Because I had to have my head stuck in a walkthrough for it. Ah well, still a good game though.

15 - Crypt of the Necrodancer - No wait, that was Cadence of Hyrule. I tried to get into it 3 times and failed 3 times.

15 - Mega Man 3
I only finished 1 Mega Man game from the legacy collection and can't remember which. So you can imagine what my experience was.

16 - Minesweeper
Truly, the only thing I enjoyed about this no matter what version I played in any point in time was KingM's mission log. Carry on, soldier.

I've played 32 games so far, and I retired 4. I tier ranked them, within the tier there is not set order.

While I haven't participated in very many, I have played a fair few games that were GotMs. I've finished 27. I've played but not finished 15.

I attempted to rank the games I finished but it's just too hard. The first one and the last three I think I'm settled on. Everything else is fuzzy as heck. Everything here is good in some way; the only ones I am more meh on is Final Fantasy I and Oxenfree. Oxenfree was the first GotM thread I participated in though.

Seen alot people mention playing the GotM but not participating. I'll say that it does not matter and rank them even if you didn't participate in the GotM. Be good though to mention any game you found and loved due to GotM (i.e. a game you've never thought of playing)

In terms of ranking the games I have finished, it is quite hard to do so since they're all in different genres. I had fun playing all of the games that I have completed, and I would like to give my thoughts on them, but that might just spam the whole GotM thread and cover up the recent ones, which I don't want to happen.

So overall I've completed 25 games we've done, which 9 of those I was able to participate in that month. I believe I've only ever had 2 games I've nominated win. 3 of the games I retired, although that was either before or after we did them. There are 12 games I have backlogged and plan to play someday. I also didn't realize how many of the games I've gotten for free until I was going through the list now, although many of them I haven't backlogged since I don't know if I want to play them.

Somewhat of a nice bell curve there since I'm ranking them within the GotM games. I kind of like how I have a tloz game in every single one of these categories, but apart from that I don't think there is much more I can say in general about a list this big. Interesting to go through for myself, that's for sure
