Deadly Premonition

User Image

Deadly Premonition is set in a fictional universe, in which good and evil are spread by the messengers influenced by the Forest and Red Tree respectively. Contrasting pairs play a role in the game, such as "good and evil, reality and abnormality, earthly life and eternal life, day and night, criminals and victims, the forest and the red tree, and twins and dual personalities." Throughout the game, the protagonist, Francis York Morgan (Jeff Kramer), periodically visits two supernatural rooms: the White Room and the Red Room. The White Room represents a normal subconscious, while the Red Room represents one influenced by evil.

Glad my recommendation won, there is just something special about this game I cannot explain. The first time I played it on 360 it felt clunky, it looked terrible and it just didn't appeal to me. But I kept on playing and at some point, I just couldn't stop, perhaps it was the mix of the soundtrack, silly dialogue with those weird characters and interesting story. I didn't care about it's bad graphics anymore, the magic did it's job. Now I'm replaying the Director's Cut version on PC with 60+fps which is nice. Hopefully you will enjoy this awesome adventure as much as I did, guys :)

This game is genius and terrible at the same time. Highly recommended.

Beware technical issues though. If you are playing it on PC expect some resistance before you get it running. Check out DPFix, fixes graphics and framerate issues (partially, at least you get 60fps). I've heard it's also pretty buggy in both consoles so.

That aside its totally worth the hassle, I have never played anything like it.

Cool I have this on PS3 as the director's cut. I played for maybe an hour, and it seems funnier than I expected.

It's been in plenty of bundles, so someone might have a spare key floating around. I somehow don't seem to have any extras of this particular one though.

Oh, well look at that. I just looked it up on isthereanydeal.com to see if it was on sale anywhere currently, and it's in a bundle right now for $2.50 on Groupees: https://groupees.com/afraid

I'm having a bit of trouble with this one. Namely I can't get the analog sticks on the controller to work (all other buttons work). I haven't found a working fix to the problem yet and I've tried all of them.

This is one of my all-time favorite games and I've been meaning to give the PC version a spin.

My only warning is that the combat is pretty frustrating and there's really no way around it. Just one of those things you kind of have to accept and move on. My best advice is to do all the side missions you can, get a magnum as early as possible, and hoard up ammo for it before you get to the art gallery level. There's an enemy type in there that takes FOREVER to kill unless you use a magnum.

I'm just going to ramble off a few thoughts on the game and I'm going to edit: spoiler it all just in case.

Completed this game last night and as I posted in the Wins thread I enjoyed it a lot, but all the sentiments about it being a amazing and awful at the same time are quite accurate, which is rather poetic considering the content of the game. It's strengths are fairly strong, it handles characters and the town of Greenvale itself fantastically, the town has its own sense of community and history to it. Storywise it's intriguing, some of it is pretty predictable, like it was fairly easy to guess that George was the killer pretty early on, though the twists at the end did catch me off guard, e.g. I had guessed accurately that Kaysen was either the killer or connected to the killer since he was the only character who actively traveled to and from the town, him helping out towards the end though made me think I was wrong which is pretty good misdirection. I loved all the symbolism, the otherworld stuff etc. all great.

I didn't buy into the whole love story thing, it always seems to feel forced when the main character just happens to fall in love with someone they are working with, it's too convenient, that said, due to how they wrote the characters the ending sequence packed enough emotional punch to hit me, and leaving the town and its people behind after only 30 or so hours was emotionally draining since it felt like I had been there for longer.

And the gameplay is half that reason, there's just nothing incredibly special about the gameplay. The open world nature of the game is appreciated but they do almost too good a job of railroading you towards your next objectives, it wasn't until chapter 9 or so when I decided to tell George and Emily to go ahead and I'd catch up later cause I wasn't entirely sure what might happen if I declined the mission. And it's great that the world operates realistically doing things at different times of the day, doing things differently depending on the weather, but it's tedious and frustrating since there's almost no easy way to know what people will be doing and at what times. I'd have happily traded in the map showing peoples locations for a Majora's Mask styled calendar showing the daily routine of each character.

For a game with 50 sidequests most of them are trivial fluff. That's both a good and a bad thing since their major function is to give you a reason to explore and interact with the town, on that level it works, otherwise it doesn't. It doesn't help that the rewards from some of the quests trivializes the rest of the game, not that it's that difficult to do, after reading Burningsoup's post about acquiring a magnum to deal with tough enemies I was expecting things to ramp up significantly but it just never happened, you only face like 1 enemy for the whole game, they creepy shadow people and if you were scared by them at the start their overuse I'd wager removed that fear. But they pose almost no threat, you start the game with a gun that has infinite ammo and it easily dispatches said enemies from start to the end of the game, which is why it's crazy to think that the quests are handing out things like shotguns with infinite ammo, and weapon MVP the infinite durability wrench 1 - 2 shotting every shadow. That wall crawler burningsoup was alluding to died in 4 - 6 shotgun blasts, but again followed such a predictable pattern that it never posed a threat. It's the same with most of the puzzles, not a lot of mental challenge.

I'm not sure whether or not the Director's Cut is the reason for that, there was no difficulty selection, I believe the original version had difficulty settings so perhaps the defaulted to a lower setting so everyone could just enjoy the experience. I died 8 times during the playthrough and all 8 times were to surprise QTE's. Probably wouldn't have been so bad but the keys they want you to press (E,R,F,C) are super awkward to hit when they also want you spamming A and D to run. There's also a few sections that just have me wondering wtf they were thinking, e.g. following Nick to the Art Gallery at 20 mph, takes forever, following Willie on his little hunt around town, and that unbelievably tedious 2nd phase running away from Kaysen. Oh and York's Car is just a nightmare to drive, that thing is utter madness.

Anyways, before it starts to sound like I'm hating on the game too much, I liked it enough that I'm going to look into other things of it's kind. The one thing that pops up most in relation to it is "Twin Peaks", something I've never seen but I'll make an effort to try it. There's also a new TV show called Wayward Pines which is supposedly quite similar so hopefully it'll be just as entertaining as Deadly Premonition was. Also also, D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die releases in a week on steam, with a positive experience in Deadly Premonition I will be eager to try this and anything else that comes from the same developers.

It's somewhat painful to play, but it's totally worth it for the story and the bizarre stuff that happens. I mean you fight a homoerotic super saiyan Hulk after killing a transvestite in a clock tower. That's the weirdest sentence I've ever thought/read/heard. I wonder if it would've worked better as a movie or a TV series.

7 people beat the game this month with an average time of 23.6 hours. There was an equal amount of Main, Main+ and 100% submissions.

As for me, I played through the entire game on my Surface Pro 2. I was surprised how well it ran, steady framerate over 30 with moderate graphics. I didn't have any technical issues and I didn't use the mod fixes.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started but I ended up loving it. I only heard about the game being "quirky" before I played it and that is quite the understatement. I played through the game over 3 days and found myself completely engrossed. I story has a surprising amount of depth and much is left to interpretation. I avoided side quests because I wanted to finish the game before The WItcher 3 came out.

I always read comparisons to Twin Peaks so I've started watching that on Netflix. Only an episode in, but I can see some of the similarities.

I played the PC port and my god was it terrible on technical level. Game crashed like once an hour and aiming was extremely limited making getting some of the collectibles pain in the ass. Kinda shame considering I loved the story and characters despite some plot holes like if George was the Raincoat Killer then how could he be inside the abandoned lumber mill and waiting outside with Emily at the same time? Also many parts of the story - especially in the beginning - reminded me of Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks is one of my favorite TV shows so DP was right at my alley.

Music was great even though sometimes the music didn't fit with the events happening, maybe intentionally so. Voice-acting was surprisingly good.

Graphics were dated - character models looked ok for the time the game was originally released but the environments looked like early PS2-era graphics. Also controls were kinda clunky. Aiming with the weapons was extremely limited and cars handled more like boats turning so slowly.

Overall this game was mixed bag for me. Story and characters were great but technical aspects of the game were just terrible. I hope Access Games makes better job with D4 PC port.

Just finished this last night and it really draws you into to it's world even with it's terrible gameplay and outdated graphics. It was well worth the time playing it but I'd recommend not playing it on the PC as this is probably the worst port i've played. I had the game constantly crash on me, The controls not allowing me to point up or down and for large parts of the game I had to use the auto lock to shoot the enemies so if you can i'd recommend playing it on a different platform then the PC.

Highlights:
The pot lady and her constant nagging of asking why I must insist on driving so safely... While I slide on the roof of the car cause I took a corner too fast
Harry Stewart, his mansion and his rhyming assistant
The town itself

I also have some questions which were left unanswered from this game:
What was the purple mist and the red seeds for?
What was Kaysans motive?
What happened in New Orleans
If the grand daughters name is Louise and not Emily why does the mother call her Emily?

Been a while since I played it so I'm probably misremembering stuff but the purple mist and red seeds I think were caused by the gas that Kaysen and his army contingent released on the town as part of an experiment in the past. It turned the town mad, then they covered it up, which is why no-one except Harry remembers it aside for the legend of the raincoat killer (and why Harry wears the gas mask). I think it was explained somewhere that the chemical seeped into the soil, then the trees absorbed it and turned some of them red, and when it rains some of the gas releases from the soil causing mild effects of the psychosis that inflicted everyone, which ingesting the red seeds does with a more concentrated effect. I think Kaysen was inflicted by the gas as well, he became obsessed with spreading the madness and watching other people kill people they love. There's likely a lot of subtext as well surrounding Kaysen that you could talk about I'm sure.

By subtext, I mean that you could approach many things in the game as a metaphor, you could take the idea of Kaysen wanting to spread his seeds very literally. Kaysen is portrayed as a sexually active man, and his goal seems to be infiltrate happy marriages, sleep with or possibly rape the wife, impregnate them and then revel in the misery it causes everyone. He did this to Zach's family, you see him actively pursuing this goal with the Ingram family, becoming friendly with them, spending time with their kids and around the Milk Barn, visiting them in their home. Obviously that's open to debate, you might interpret things differently or I might have misremembered stuff.

I don't know about the others though. Like I said, been ages, I might be misremembering, or that not even be true so correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmm i guess they are produced from the violent death of someone and also allow for the attainment of immortally via violent actions.

Ahh a rape allegory...now that I think about it there were signs which i missed throughout out the game. Still don't know his origins thouygh. Could he be the devil? or a allegory for him?

It's also probable you never saw them. From my understadning they're only available for the directors cut.
