Cthulhu Saves the World

User Image

The lord of insanity, Cthulhu was all set to plunge the world into insanity and destruction when his powers were sealed by a mysterious sorcerer. The only way for him to break the curse is to become a true hero. Save the world to destroy it in an epic parody RPG journey of redemption, romance, and insanity!

w00t!!

I was reading about the other game, and learned the Xbox emulation is nearly non-existent. The more you know!

I finished Cthulu Saves the World already. Here was my review

Funny and cute game. Unfortunately gameplay is flawed in many ways. Overly long dungeons and a high encounter rate make this game drag on a bit. There are many good aspects as well, such as a limited number of random battles per dungeon.

I'll be skipping this month but only because I've already played this game and have time for it. I'll be interested to see the feedback it gets from those that do get a chance to play it this month.

Despite my dislike for JRPGs, random encounters and turn based combat I enjoyed this game. Spoonfuls of predominantly successful humor and gameplay levity helped the medicine go down, as it were. That being said, I found the labyrinthine level design irritating and the game itself was very repetitive.

Goddamn stupid games requiring me to install WMP just for them to run. I don't even know why, when it's a 2D tile-based RPG. I install it, launch it, and it crashes as soon as it gets to the title screen. At least now I know why after poking around in the forum, but now I'm also cranky and don't feel like playing it right now. Time to punch people in the face in BlazBlue instead or something. Heh.

I'm in the exact same situation, I tried to play it yesterday but it crashed because I didn't have WMP. Instead I played POSTAL 2; great game, brilliant in almost every way.

People seemed to have found a solution to that on the steam forums.

Oh, I'm sure it'll run fine if/when I bother reinstalling WMP. Sequence (or whatever they were forced to change the name to for some weird reason even though it was fine for like three years...Before the Echo, apparently) was fine after I did that. It's just an obnoxious thing to depend on, because I can't think of a good reason for it, and I go literally years between times that I run into things that need it.

Huh, I literally looked at my Backloggery this morning and thought "I really should beat Cthulhu Saves The World". I'm somewhere around the middle, but had to stop because I didn't really have time... but now that I'm free from my college's clutches for a couple months, I should finish this up! Honestly when I stopped I was sort of 'meh' towards the game, but I'll write a bit more once I beat it (probably over the weekend). :)

I actually managed to finish the game this month! And that's a doubly good thing since I suggested this one...

I remember this game being pretty hyped when it came out, but it didn't quite meet the expectations I'd built for it over the years. It subverts lots of RPG tropes and breaks the fourth wall a number of times, but so many games have done that now that the humor just didn't seem all that special. Or maybe the writing was just mediocre. Still some good gags here and there though.

The art was pretty beautiful at times and I enjoyed the combat. Despite being turn-based it had a pretty fast pace, especially when you memorize the menus and figure out the best way to optimize fights. The encounter rate was a little higher than I would have liked in some of the later areas, but there's very little grinding necessary to get by. Also, not sure if anybody else had this experience, but I found the normal random encounters harder overall than most of the boss fights... those pretty much just boiled down to working up your combo until you had a reasonably powerful Deathblow... but I still found it to be a pretty fun game.

I probably will play Call of Cthulhu now, just for the hell of it.

"The Call of Cthulhu...to be the best hero ever?"

Introduction

Cthulhu Saves the World is a 2011 RPG created by indie developer Zeboyd Games. It is the spiritual sequel to Breath of Death VII: The Beginning and contains many allusions to it. While that game was a blatant parody of classic RPGs, Cthulhu Saves the World is far more subtle in its humor. It is mostly a tribute to H.P. Lovecraft's 1928 short story The Call of Cthulhu and contains many references to that story, other works by Lovecraft and to his life. The game proves to be entertaining and lighthearted start to finish and stands as one of the best indie titles I have ever played.

I finished this a few days after June ended. Whoops.

Anyway... I don't know, I really didn't like it too much. I didn't think it was particularly bad or anything, but it was a bit grating. I didn't find the humor all that funny (then again, I don't like the vast majority of 'parody' games), and the exploring the dungeons eventually became a pain in the ass, with their maze like structures. Also, certain random encounters would just kick my butt, so eventually what I would do is stand at a save point or at the entrance of the dungeon, grind out the number of battles needed to get rid of random encounters, then rush through the dungeon and completely obliterate the boss. It wasn't very fun.

That said, I'm still sorta excited for Cosmic Star Heroine and how that will work out.
