I just bought it, I don't like the title "Horizon Zero Dawn", it feels like they just added three different words that sells. Maybe it will make sense after playing it.

Ahhh, I wish I had a PS4 to play this game! It looks pretty good. Can't wait to see what you guys think about it!

I think Jeff Gerstmann from Giant Bomb said that it will make sense in the end.
I picked up the game too. 45 minutes in so far and am intrigued by the story setup. Trying to finish up a couple other games before I dive too deep.

All I heard about Horizon is that story is really predictable, but everything else is great.

I'm picking up a Switch today, but I think I might actually put off playing Breath of the Wild to play this first. I feel like if I were to play BotW first, it would completely overshadow this game, so I oughta give it a fair shake, y'know?
(Also I'm really surprised that nobody even nominated BotW for this month)

I am holding off on this because I know every other game I own will not be touched until I finish BotW. I plan to get Horizon just probably after BotW and Andromeda.

Started this today. Honestly, I'm pretty bored by it. After 5 hours, I'm still not drawn in by the world, and I haven't grown attached to any of the characters since most of them are either dead or assholes. Maybe that's "the point," to make you feel like an outsider, but I'm just not invested in the conflict enough to care.
The gameplay is fine, I guess, but I don't get any sense of accomplishment from taking down robots. It's a lather-rinse-repeat of "aim for the glowing object, miss, resort to smacking it with your spear when it charges you," and for the most part I try to go around danger when possible because it feels more like a nuisance than a challenge. Mostly it just seems like it can't decide if it wants to be Far Cry or Skyrim, but it misses the mark on both in my opinion.
I'll see how my next play session goes. Normally I'm inclined to go all out and get 100% in games like this, but if things don't improve I might just gun through the main story and then be done with it.

I have played for 5-6 hours (I am level 20 and still on my way to Meridian, a level 12 quest) and I like it (not as much as Breath of the Wild though). Leveling up skills feels useful and the side quests are fun to do. Since I did not play Far Cry Primal/Dragon Quest Inquisition etc I still find open World games to be really entertaining. Also the idea of a hot red head killing robot dinosaurs is like my kindergarten dream come true.
It is exciting to find new robot foes I haven't seen before and try to take them out. I went to a bandit camp, which was probably not made for my level (I had to headshot the bandits like 5 times before they would die) and when I finished it I got lots and lots of exp, so I am a bit overleveled now. I also like to just explore the world, because it feels like I will be rewarded for doing so. I have not gotten so far on the main quest, but I want to know more about this world. Even the non threatening swines, rabbits, foxes etc are worth your time to kill because their resources can upgrade your bags.Maybe I like it more because I haven't played the games that inspired Horizon Zero Dawn. The last open world game that grabbed my attention was Red Dead Redemption (really excited for the sequel) and GTA V. I will probably not 100% (because I never do that) this game but I will take my time with it and do almost all of the side activities.

The Witcher 3 is my baseline for an open-world game. How does this compare?
I promised I'd get HZD if it scored more than 9.2 on IGN and it did. I haven't bought a game within a year of launch since I got my PS4 but this one has been poking away at me. A quick show of hands if you think I should get it if I can grab it for £40...?

Personally I don't think it stacks up very well, but that could just be me. Just by looking at the completions listed on your profile I think you'll probably have a good time with it, though. It borrows a LOT of its mechanics and elements from The Witcher and Far Cry. If you're looking for an open-world time sink, lots of crafting and customization, and tactical hunting combat, then you'll probably enjoy it well enough. If you're looking to get invested in the plot, characters, and world, you might be a little disappointed.
Also, prepare yourself for the fact that sometimes shooting a human enemy directly in the head will only take off a chip of their health for some reason.
I've softened a little bit on it since last night, but I really feel like I'm just whittling away hours more than actively enjoying it. As of right now I'd probably give it a 6/10, and that's mostly because of the visuals and the variety of weapons you can use. Still holding out to see if it improves.

I got this today but haven't started playing it yet, apart from install it and watch the wonderful opening sequence that leads to the main menu. At first I thought this was a pre-rendered video sequence, but then I realised it was being generated in real time. I am so blown away by the quality of visuals and effects in the current generation of consoles, especially considering their ridiculously small size and quietness. Perhaps I'm just old (I grew up playing Space Invaders, Asteroids and Pac Man in the arcades) but I think my PS4 Slim is a veritable wonder.
What attracted me to this game was the aesthetic and thematic reminiscence it has to Enslaved: Odyssey To The West, a relatively overlooked and underrated game that is one of my personal faves. I know it's a different sort of game but there is so much that is analogous.

Played the game for about 12 hours and I have to say i am enjoying it. I find the world of which has been built very interesting and it handles the back story and cultures of the different civilizations quiet well. I haven't got the full story of why the machine took over but from the vantages I've seen i'm getting an understanding of why it happened. The two main tribes which i've interacted with (the nora and the carja) both show different ways of how they are run (Nora are matriarchal while Carja are patriarchal) and the effects of how these countries are run and the effects it has on the people
The gameplay I find really works well with the hunter esque way you're meant to play. It gives you the tools for stalking and hunter pray as well as ways of building traps and slowly moving the enemies into the traps you set for them. I do have a problem with this set up in a open world though. While the fast travel works well it is annoying traversing the world on foot or mount due to enemies Attacking and chasing you if they see you of which they do for too long imo and can lead to some real annoying sections where you are easily overwhelmed by a herd of sawtooths.
Characters for me are a mixed bag. Some seem to be well fleshed out characters but there is a lot of one note characters who end up being fodder and lack the impact in the story they are suppose to. Still i'll have to give my full thoughts on the game when I've finished it

Guess I'll share my final thoughts too...
I didn't get 100% according to the game's progression percentage, but I did get the Platinum Trophy. Like most open world games with vantage points, collectibles, and side challenges, I hit a sort of zen state for some of the middle hours where I didn't mind so much that I wasn't having a great time. Heck, some of the hunting trials almost came close to being fun, but they're so short and easy. The story picked up some interesting beats towards the end, but the pacing for the second half of the game is atrocious. I could tell the devs were really banking on you still having side quests and collectibles to do between story missions, because if you try to go through all the main missions at once, it really is just a rinse-and-repeat process of "Go into this bunker and read/hear exposition for an hour." Sometimes there are enemy encounters before or after, but sometimes you really do just waltz in and out. The only two memorable characters are Aloy and Erend. The rest are either unlikable or completely forgettable since the story refuses to place emphasis on anyone except Aloy. The most interesting plot points and characters are all from the distant past. The text datapoints that come with each of the Vantages? Strong writing! In comparison, the "present" narrative feels like a lame AU, a wannabe Fallout but with Native American symbolism.
Mostly it just felt like a lot of squandered potential. Most of my criticisms boil down to, "They did this cool thing, but..." For example, the visuals are breathtaking and phenomenal, but the camera is zoomed so far in that Aloy and the HUD take up almost the entire screen. It's like trying to look out at the Grand Canyon but there's someone standing right in front of you, and no matter where you go, they're always blocking the view. I know you can customize which HUD features appear, but any time I took something away I would die or miscount arrows or get completely lost since there are so few distinctive landmarks to know where you are without constantly referring to the compass and world map.
The variety of machines is really cool, and taking them down strategically is actually pretty fun! ...But the game rarely guides you into fighting some of the more interesting machines. After finishing all the side quests and collectibles (which takes you over just about every corner of the map) I still had not encountered every machine. Why would they make so many machines and then not find some excuse to get you to fight them? Instead, for some reason that defies all logic, they guessed that people were really going to like fighting Glinthawks, so about 90% of the quests in the second half of the game have you fighting swarms of them. The human combat also felt like a total afterthought. Most encounters spawn way too many enemies at once. Scoring headshots is challenging enough with the bow, but it's hardly even rewarding because so many human enemies can take a whole quiver of arrows directly into the brain and still not go down.
As knalb mentioned, getting across the overworld is an utter pain since Aloy is so slow on foot and you can't go more than 10 feet without a machine spotting you and then chasing you for the next three miles. Yeah, you can hack a mount, but only 3 of the 20+ machines can be used as mounts. So basically, you have to track down a machine that can be ridden, get to it in stealth without being spotted, and then hack it before another machine sees you and rams you. There's a lategame skill that allows you to call a mount whenever you want, but by then I had unveiled pretty much the entire map and had enough fast travel points that it didn't really matter. Fast travel is also frustrating because the load times can range so widely, but usually fall on the "frustratingly long" side.
Also, even if anybody vehemently disagrees with anything I said above, I hope we can all agree that the swimming and water physics in this game are totally abysmal.

fun game. 8/10 or 9/10 i think.
pros:
- graphics are great
- strong female character
- fun gameplay
- difficulty was fair, never felt annoyed, if you level up accordingly you can gate difficulty yourself
- didn't have to play every granular side mission to platinum
cons:
- she can jump 10 feet high if there's a climbable ledge, but can't scale a four foot rock in the mountains
- really no reason to equip different outfits
- some side mission waypoints felt broken
- wasn't super impressed by the story

Finished this game last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt the game built it's world up extremely well especially how the words, rule and lifestyles are corrupted through time (i.e. Craja = Carson, Nora = Faro. All mother = the automated parental system within the mountains and the rules set by the nora are styled around how they were brought up within the mountain). Later on in the game I did meet some stand out characters in the game (I found slyans a stand out as being a person who is unashamedly chasing knowledge as well as a do your job attitude to Alloy) but still there is a lack of truly strong secondary characters throughout most of the game.
I'm surprised by the variety of weapons in the game and found that often rotated them out for when I needed them. For example larger enemies I preferred tying them down and then hitting them with fire arrows, for medium enemies I preferred using tearblast arrows and trip wires to take them down and for smaller and human enemies I preferred using the precision arrows as if done correctly can one shot them in a silent manor.
The world aesthetics where extremely impressive and I took a few photos of some of the areas and all of them give off impressive views. Unfortunately this is curtailed by the annoyance of the travelling as travelling can get annoying especially at low levels when enemies constantly attack you and fast travel has some slow loading times depending on the area you head for.
Overall I probably give this game a 9/10. I enjoyed this game alot but it still had some minor flaws which held it back for me

Reached oureas place and got given the taste to prove myself to the banku. Also got the rail modification in the old hangar
01/31/2023 10:16 PM
Completed the trials got gold on both of the two current available (not first try on either though). Moved onto the bandit camp
02/01/2023 10:09 PM
Cleared the bandit camp and took down the tower to the north. Head back to the village and picked up a new quest will try and find slivas for the last option in the impress the banuk
02/02/2023 10:08 PM
Just did the collectibles today. Just missing 2 figurines and 1 paint left
02/03/2023 11:36 PM
Finished collecting the collectibles. Completed the hunters three quests and challenge Araka for the cheiftian and won. Just going to do the chieftian challenge up in the hunter lodge but found a new side quests so going to do that first
05/02/2023 at 12:46 AM
Reached the cauldron and removed Hephaestus. Basically finished the main quest line now just clean up. Gotta kill the fireclaws and attempt the Chieftian trials
05/02/2023 at 10:51 PM
Was hoping to get the game finished tonight but still have 1 Fireclaw left to beat. Will have to try the Chieftian trial again as I got more powerful bows which should help beat the trial in a faster rate

and that is Frozen wilds done. Was able in the end get gold on the Chieftian trial. Gotta say 3 precision arrows using the banuk bow and jumping to slow time was a life safer. Not much to really say it's been 4 years since I played horizon so I'm a bit outside of when the DLC should've been played. I don;t think it added much new to the game but it did include a new interesting story which is sometimes all you need. The game play loop still is great. I'll write a quick review on this as a DLC but it doesn't really change any of my previous drawbacks or remove anything from the base game. Prob score it the same

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is a pretty decent DLC. It offers a new region and story and a bit of hindsight to life that came before. It adds new creatures, more powerful weapons and more challenges then the base but doesn’t offer anything anything spectacular new to the base game instead it builds on the base.
