Resident Evil 4

User Image

In Resident Evil 4 you'll know a new type of horror, as the classic survival-horror action returns with all-new characters, controls and storylines. We last saw Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 2 - a rookie cop in Raccoon City, fighting to stay alive. That was six years ago. Since then, government forces have managed to control the zombie threat and Leon has become a Federal agent. When the President's daughter is kidnapped, Leon tracks her to a remote, hidden fortress in Europe - where he'll relive the horror he faced six years before. Players will face never-before-seen enemies that make Nemesis seem like a kitten. You'll be wishing for the usual Resident Evil zombies!

The Evil Within

User Image

The Evil Within embodies the meaning of pure survival horror. Experience a disturbing reality as you try to break free from warped machinations that could only exist in the most horrifying worlds. Face twisted creatures and experience true terror, all heightened by cutting edge lighting and animation made possible by a customized version of the id Tech 5 engine.

Dead Space

I could maybe give RE4 another shot. The controls infuriated me when I tried the Wii version before. Don't even get me started unless you enjoy my ranting for some odd reason. Anyway, I think I still have that around somewhere. It's either that or the PC version, which I don't imagine agreeing with me much better. Alternately I also have Dead Space and was sort of meaning to check it out at some point.

Really it comes down to whether I can find the time/energy and which one will actually run in Wine, because Win10 is going bye bye for being garbage.

Well didn't expect that. My PS2 which hasn't been used for years and also has a huge crack in it's casing (from me dropping a boxed TV) and while theres a few problems with the controllers the PS2 ran without any problems. well they don't make em like they used to

I own RE4 (PC) and Dead Space (PS3), so I'll be playing those two. I'm going to finish Heavenly Sword before I start the latter, and depending on how long Heat Signature takes to finish I might wait on that before starting the former.

Oh, and I have the Limited Run release of Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut for Vita, so I might play that this month too.

I'll probably play The Evil Within for this month. I'd play Resident Evil 4 but I really want to keep it for a full Resident Evil series playthrough at some point (in fact I probably would do it this month if 2 and 3 had easily accessible digital versions). I've played Dead Space already, I wouldn't be opposed to a replay but I'll see how the month goes first.

Man, I was hoping by some miracle that Dangan Ronpa would make it, but these are good too. Guess I'll be playing all but Dead Space. I don't think I own it.

I lost count on how many times and versions of Resident Evil 4 I played, but if anyone wants to know, the Wii version is the best overall IMHO, fantastic game regardless of the heavy focus on action.

As for Dead Space, I recommend the 2nd game as the first is lacking in variety and has you constantly backtracking. Let's just pretend the 3rd was never made, it's awful.

The Evil Within tries too hard to reach RE4's level but still remains consistent in horror and gives you enough tools for multiple NG+ runs. Since I've never got around to finish it, I'll give it one more shot.

I'll be doing Dead Space (X360) this month. Have no interest in the other two titles.

Also, sorry KingM, I put Minesweeper as spot #3 but I suppose that wasn't enough.

Don't worry mate

One day when all hope is lost, a bright light will descend upon the battlefield, and leading that bright light will be Minesweeper. Turning the tide of the battle, and ultimately the war against darkness that is the filth of all these other video games.

Yeah I figured Danganronpa was a longshot but I'm pleasantly surprised that it still managed to land in 5th place. Still gonna play it this month, regardless.

I wanted to like Resi 4, I really did... but trying to navigate with those movement controls made me want to scoop my own eyes out with a spoon. Let's hope Dead Space makes a better impression on me!

Resident Evil 4 it is! I'll probably start that in the next day or so.

Waffling on whether or not I'll do Evil Within... I want to play it but there are smaller spoopy games that I'd like to do just that little bit more.

As for Dead Space, I've played that in the past. I enjoyed it mostly for its atmosphere... it wasn't scary, but it had a nice feel to it. A bit backtracky, but still fun.

Currently going through Evil Within, it's slow-going for me.... it feels kind of tedious to play. And there's, so far, not much puzzling elements; it's sort of, like, go there, do this, rinse repeat. I don't know how I feel about the story. I haven't really developed a connection to any of the characters. I feel like it's trying to hard to be the bridge between Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Maybe I'll change my mind once I get farther.

Gonna start Resident Evil 4 pretty soon, hopefully.

I started Resident Evil 4 and spent about an hour trying to get into it... but I just can't reconcile with the control scheme. I went into it knowing that the controls were really hit or miss with folks but... I really did hope that I'd be able to get the hang of it enough to enjoy the game. But nothing was clicking into place and the whole thing just felt like a slog.

Makes me sad. I've heard such great things about it... maybe I'll look into some of the ports and if they're somewhat easier to manage, but for now it's going in my retired bin. :(

So far in my experience absolutely not. They're just different variations on terrible for me. Couldn't hurt trying if you can cheaply or for free, but don't get your hopes up.

All 3 of these games are a 10/10 on my list. And here are a few reasons I feel that way.

Resident Evil 4 is a solid game I try to run through it at least once a year, right around this time. Great for casual play or for someone looking for a rewarding game to speed run. The only issue I have is not with the game it's self, it's that the PC version of the game crashes very often making it unplayable.

Evil Within is also a blast and even tho it can get difficult at parts it's very rewarding when you make it to the next part The end is easier than some parts leading up to it. but it's all worth the struggle.

Dead Space... ahhh Dead Space....It has an amazingly creative playstyle that is open to finding creative ways to dismember and destroy the aliens. Also for the second playthrough try playing on Hard with just the Plasma Cutter. (if you're playing this on PS3 I believe this is a trophy) You only have to worry about upgrading the one weapon, and you can sell any extra ammo that you get for the other guns.

Right I've finished the first game and it's residnet evil 4 heres my review:

The passage of time has not been great on Resident evil 4. While I can tell that this is a game which has definitely spawned a new way to play 3rd person games with it's over the shoulder shooting style now used everywhere. Due to this though it means that alot of games have iterated on top of this style to continue to improve it there gameplay and now it makes this game more sluggish and outdated.

The biggest problems with the controls is that Leon handles like a tank and cannot easily manoeuvre away from enemies. It is especially annoying when you have to run and then slowly turn back towards your enemies. Your aim also is difficult due to poor depth deception from the iron point so you can feel like you're shooting the enemy but are actually shooting away from them.

In terms of the gameplay you can tell that the developers where quiet happy with their new style of gameplay as this game is much more action orientated then the first resident evil (haven't played 2 or 3) while I have problems with the gameplay in terms of comparing it to today's game, it is still a vast improvement over the gameplay of the past resident evil games. Still I'm disappointed in the lack puzzles in the game which I felt was a much better core then the shooting.

The design of the game is much more linear then previous games especially during the end game. While this not a problem I miss the circular level design of the old game with the main hall as a return point from treks around the mansion. While the village centre acts this way in the first area it's not repeated in the later areas. Still it continously to push you forward to your next objective.

Story wise it's stupid but it know it is and it leans into it with silly characters, over the top dialogue with excessive puns and large over the top boss battles with huge creatures. Each of the main villains have their own style and characterisation going between sinister and goofy and where for the most part was great to interact with.

Still the character of Ashley was a problem while I had no problems with her during gameplay, she was annoyingly characterised with her continuously screaming for help when you can see her. In terms of gameplay based around her it acts as most a escort mission but thankfully she hugs you quiet closely and doesn't become a problem for the most part.

The enemies are really creepy and act well for a horror game and make for an excellent substitute for the standard zombie. I would say they are much better as they can and do act intelligently trying to trap and corner you when possible and when you split there heads open the parasites inside can become quiet the problem.

The length was good sized length although the final area was not the best and was pretty annoying to play through and the extra separate way was annoying so I quickly ran through it.

Overall Resident evil 4 is a game which had huge effects on its genre but has unfortunately not aged well with time. If you can handle the bad controls give it a go but stay away if this is a problem.

6/10

SPOLIERS

The village was a great opening to the game where you slowly piece together what's going on and the village chief is a formidable opponent and his boss battle was the second best after the fish in the lake. The fish in the lake was great to fight with the harpoon while being dragged behind the enemy and trying to avoid debris. The chief fight was a really action paced boss battle in the middle of a burning building and was a great end to the area.

The castle is where things get really goofy where you fight the head of the castle who is a angry little dwarf who Leon keeps taunting when he possible can. Still I'd say this area was the most enjoyable to play through with a great mixture of enemies and traps which are sprung on you. The blind enemies could be difficult if you're not cautious but were a great fight once you got there patterns down. The final boss fight in the area was a giant plant but it wasn't all that significant and involved shooting a large eye until the main body is available.

The island can go fuck itself. I really hated this area it was all a gauntlet of enemies with much more damage than previous enemies and there was no interesting puzzles in this area. The boss battle with Krauser was alright but the rest was just a slog to get though, The final boss was too easy. All I did was throw and grenade and cut throw a grenade and cut until ada threw me a bazooka.

Separate ways was pointless and tedious to the point I just ran through it. It gave a few details of what ada was doing during the main story but it was mainly pointless. I didn't bother with Assignment Ada as it felt like a retread of what I had already played.

Onto the next game The Evil Within

You say that "you have to run and then slowly turn back towards your enemies", but Leon can turn back quickly by pressing down + O at the same time (I'm talking about PS systems at least). It's quick and easy and it gives a great advantage.

Huh. I've seen a lot of complaints about the controls over the years (and made a lot of them myself). There are also plenty of people who defend them as being good (or even the controls in the first RE), but their opinions are objectively wrong.

First of all, there is no such thing as "objectively wrong opinions" for each opinion is meant to be subjective from the start. However, if you refer to it's overall reception, your point still stands wrong as it was the most influential game in it's era and holds up well still, a game with unresponsive controls would never have reached that point. Everything was designed around the tank control scheme here:

- tight corridors for the lack of strafing
- slow enemies so you can land precise shots
- not moving and shooting simultaneously is the series trademark

I don't know with what expectations you went in here but disliking the game for it's "objectively wrong" roots is just plain absurd. It may not be for you, but that's a different story, you don't see me hate on sports games for not being third-person shooters now, do you?

Lol that's exactly why I wanted to like it. It was a huge game in terms of what it inspired and it was designed around the controls well... but I just couldn't get into those controls. I've tried a couple times more since my post and I still can't. In my case it's possible this stems from not being able to start getting into games until about 2009ish, and only being able to do PC games for the majority of the time since then (when I lived at home if I had a console hooked up I had to play it when mom wasn't home 'cause she didn't like the noise... and with her on disability that was almost never so it wasn't worth it). 'Cause of that I've grown accustomed to the games that have taken the formula and refined it, so this was just a step backward and super clunky to me. I'm also not terribly coordinated with controllers yet since I don't use them often enough, so that certainly didn't help matters any.

That's not to say it doesn't have its merits. I know it does; it wouldn't have done so well back in the day and gotten ported to so many systems if it didn't. I'll just likely never see 'em 'cause I can't get the hang of how it works.
