Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the Final Fantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and series debut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limited sound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush 3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-quality music. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, and immense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite an engrossing experience.

FF7 is arguably the most influential Final Fantasy title. The influence of the preceding titles is dubious and their innovations few and far between. I've not played this game yet, because I don't like JRPGs or PS1 games, but I respect it for pushing the boundaries of video games in some respects.

I'm curious if anyone who doesn't like JRPGs will enjoy the upcoming remake, which I hear has more modern mechanics. I may take that opportunity to try a Final Fantasy game since the first one on NES.

Yay, my nomination won! 😃 I hope we don't end up having too much confusion/ issues with the remake coming out soon.

I bought this while it was on sale on PS4 a few years ago, and since I was seeing so much about the remake recently I decided a few weeks ago to finally start and give it a try. I've been really enjoying it so far!

I'm about 24 hours in and my highest level is Cloud at 32. I'm currently back in Cloud's old hometown again and just recruited Vincent. I think I have to go up the mountain again next since Sephiroth is having some reunion thing going on up there. I've only had one game over so far too, which is a pleasant surprise, and it occurred when Barrett fought his old friend since it caught me off guard that he had to fight alone and my inventory was a mess so I couldn't heal him fast enough when his health got low.

Also this is this is the first Final Fantasy game I've truly delved into. I've played a little of the first one on the NES but didn't get too far into it. I had a lot of internal debate whether to start with this one or 6 first, and ultimately since the remake is coming out soon this was the one I had decided upon.

Craptastic battle system in an otherwise fantastic world with charming FMVs: even being as someone who adores the PS1 era, I could only endure the first 2 hours at best, I think this game would benefit greatly from a speed-up function. The remake on the other hand looks a lot more promising, but I'm not laying my hands on it until all episodes are out.

Great game! I wrote a review back in December on my backlog thread.

...This is GOTM #63, not #64, right?

I tried this game a few years back and gave up out of frustration at how slow and plodding it is. I have a preorder for the remake, but I doubt I'll be starting that in time for the discussion this month.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the HD port have a "speed up battles" feature?

Anyway, my longstanding, slow-moving goal has been to play all the numbered Final Fantasy games in order, and since next on my theoretical list was IV, I'll sadly be unable to contribute. Unless of course I somehow manage to beat two Kingdom Heartses, three Final Fantasies and maybe a couple breather games in the next thirty days, which to be fair looks increasingly possible.

I really hope it has. FF3 had an auto battle that sped up the game and FF4 3D has just an auto-battle, unfortunately without speeding the game up. I've recently started playing the FF games that I haven't and I was planning on playing them in order, but I feel like this is the perfect opportunity to play such a hyped game.

I believe it does, although trying to search for the information is a massive pain with all the recent remake stories, posts and so on.

It certainly has a character stats cheater, which would certainly speed up battles.

It does exist, but it's exclusive to the PS4 port. You'd think there'd be some mod on PC, but nope, we are losing this battle :/

TIL FF7 is on the Xbox One...for whatever reason. In the description was, in fact, a 3x speed feature.

Okay that's fair, I'm not used to seeing oldschool FF games on XBOX consoles in general. Still, I wish they didn't forget about the PC mustard rice.

It was just on sale last week (7, 8 & 9) and I regret not picking it up. I have the PS One version but my TV doesn't even have the right connections to play it.

I was surprised as well. I was searching up FF7 to see how old it was and saw it was on Xbox One. I was confused.

Well then, I’ll finally get to see what all the fuss is about! :) I’ve never played this before but I’ve heard many references to it. It’s hard to be an rpg fan and not hear about it. Up to now my only experience with this game was the Advent Children movie. It was on my backlog to be played with the other Final Fantasies but since a lot of them aren’t direct sequels I don’t mind playing this out of order.

I liked it a lot better than the first Final Fantasy movie. Of course a lot of the backstory went over my head but I understood enough to get what was going on.
