Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality.

I did not vote for the game but it has been on my radar ever since it came out. I decided to use the discount on Fanatical and buy it. Can't wait to see how it is!

I won't be participating (only because I've played it before), but you are all in for such a treat! I remember really enjoying this one. It's very beautiful with some touching themes. I'll be curious to see what others think.

I've played it. Twice. Kinda three times because of going back to find things to 100% it. And I still want to play it again. It's such a beautiful experience and I'm looking forward to other people enjoying it for the first time.

It's not one I think most people would see as very replayable but I'm also kind of ridiculous shrug.

Oh, neat. A Game of the Month that I've actually played. Just recently even. I don't really know how these events here work but I'm hoping everyone who starts playing it for this month is gonna enjoy it. It's a very slick and atmospheric puzzle platformer.

Where is that voting taking place?

45 minutes in... (I stopped playing when I found the green color) The game is really beautiful. I really like the soundtrack too. It shows that they made a lot of effort so that everything works well together. I tried to choose a non-spoilery screenshot from my first session.

This game keeps you reaching for that screencap button/key all right. My folder for it has 164 shots and I'm honestly surprised it's not more. It will be after my next play I'm sure. I love the green area! Looking forward to impressions there too :D

I've already played Gris and I definitely enjoyed it, but I don't think I liked it as much as many other people. Having said that though, the art is spectacular and basically ended up being the reason I finished the game. I don't usually get into platformers in general, so the fact that I finished it at all is a credit to the game as a whole.

I really enjoyed the different areas, the animations, and of course the soundtrack, but I forget the story (if any) or the point to the whole thing. Either way though, the art is very nicely done and actually serves a purpose in the game rather than being there simply for the sake of it. This might not be the most challenging platformer out there, but that's why I didn't retire it as it was a pleasure to play from start to finish.

Well I'm back after a 5 month break from gaming. I just bought gamepass for pc despite having a big backlog of games and gris is on it. I'm not too far into it but the music is amazing and love the art style too.

Omg, this game... I won't be replaying it, but everyone who is going through it for the first time, you are all in for a treat!!! The ambient, the art, and the music, all of them make Gris such a beautiful experience!!!
And restoring color to the world and changing the hub with each one of them is a mechanic that I enjoyed a lot!

If I had to rate this game based on my first impression, just for its artistic values, I'd say I dig it. But I hate to admit how awfully boring it is as a game. This is going to be one of those short games that still overstay their welcome somehow and artsy stuff can only add so much to something you have to interact with: it's almost like Dear Esther, but in 2D and even less (or none?) story. I really thought I would be able to indulge myself with it for a couple evenings, but that changed sooner than I anticipated :/

Or maybe I'm just not the target audience and / or I don't understand art, not everything is meant to be enjoyed by everyone.

This is a copy/paste of what I wrote to GamerAim on Discord:

So far, what Gris definitely has:

-It's just god damn beautiful
-Soundtrack is just as nice and fits the game nicely
-Controls are simple and precise

What Gris does not have:

-A story, or, does it have one? Not sure. Nothing was explained so far
-Easy and linear, no ennemies, no challenge really

I mean, I am personally very happy with the game. I don't mind that it's easy, linear and doesn't really have a story. It's just damn relaxing. With my son going back to school after more than 5 months at home, it's clear that he's having struggles to adapt, again. And we're back to last winter and before with a difficult son and a lot of stress and anger. So, when I sat down and played Gris for the first time, it just felt so good.

Oh I knew it was of the relaxing type with no obstacles or challenge, I didn't however know it would be so... "one-dimensional". I usually relax to brainless shooters, point & click adventures with a comfy soundtrack or a walking sim that tells a story. GRIS, to me, has only been a title that is more exciting to screencap rather than actually play. To each his own I suppose!

I played this game despite not liking platformers, just because of its beautiful visuals and.......

I hated it.

I also heavily dislike games without a story and I just thought that Gris was really pretentious.

The moment my dislike turned into hatred was when the game made me do platforming upside down in the dark.
I even got a little nauseous during that part.

I´m just glad that Gris wasn't a very long game.

I've played around 1hr and 20ish now--moving through more quickly since I already have all the mementos and achievements. I'm through the green area which is one of my favourites. Block buddy! I don't know what to call buddy, so they're block buddy and I have to feed them all the apples and it's great. So cute. Then I've done part of blue.

It's a melancholy game but I love all these little moments to delight in like block buddy or running along the top of the water platforms near the start of the blue area. I remember delighting in that the first time. And then! I forgot the mushrooms part. I was going along thinking it was straight into the water part, but no, glowy and sparkly mushrooms! I don't think I'm capable of going through that section without jumping around on the big mushroom. And another set of puzzling I remembered along the way but that'll be for next time.

Just finished Gris (100%). I was really hyped to play it, it kind of didn’t live up to my hype, but by the time I was finished playing - I felt satisfied in the end.

Here comes my spoiler fest interpretation of what I thought was going on as I played:

At first I thought it was about a breakup, then I wondered if it was about her mother dying, but there was no maternal-child imagery anywhere - it was always singular statues everywhere, so I gave up that theory and settled on it being about herself dying. The achievements have this theme of coming to terms with grief (Deniel, Anger, Bartering, Depression and Acceptance). Like she’s been diagnosed with something bad and has to come to terms with it. All the statues throughout the game are of a young woman, which I presume is the main character. The statues are all broken, like a broken body dying from something. She fights these dark creatures which is her mentally manifesting whatever disease she’s got. Then the final-ish scene when you swim through the darkness and come to a tomb with the statue lying at peace (where you get the Acceptance achievement)... she’s accepting the death of something or someone. Then her statue gets reassembled, she kisses it, it cries… and she ascends to the heavens. I was really comfortable with that interpretation, and then I went back and picked up all the mementos and unlocked the secret ending - where you finally see her pictured with her mother, who looks like the statues everywhere and that early theory I discarded (oops) looks like it was the right one after all and it’s about coming to terms with her mother dying.

One last spoilery comment about the gameplay, more than it’s meaning. There was this cool moment in the trailer which stands out in my memory, and was the image that made me want to play this game - of the statue falling apart and Gris jumping up the debris as it collapses. Looked amazing. Then I got to that part in the game … and you aren’t even controlling Gris - it’s all automatic cutscene! Argh I was so crushed, such disappointment :(

I've just completed the game in exactly 3 hours almost on the dot. It was shorter than anticipated. I did not complete the game at 100% of course. I enjoyed my time with the game. It had interesting and simple mecanics. I liked the visuals and the music. It's not the most thrilling game I've played but I enjoyed it for what it was. I may add more to my comments and/or review later during the month...

Finished my... third... play at 2 hrs and 28 minutes. Still a beautiful experience and still feels just good to control. She's very fluid. Jumping and double jumping feels graceful and smooth. AND the the water area doesn't suck to control! A lot of times water sections of a game otherwise devoid of them are clunky and annoying. The parts later where you swoop in and out of waterfalls or water blocks are fun and feel good too. Still love my block buddy. Still got startled by the second appearance of that damn eel even knowing it's coming.

And the end is touching and a little triumphant. Beautiful music. That whole last level is beautiful and while not necessarily the biggest fan of the upside parts, they don't bother me or throw me off kilter nearly as much as I would've expected from experience with other games that throw in things like that.

There are also just other gameplay odds and ends I appreciate like:
at the beginning not being able to do anything but walk. When you try to just jump she simply falls. You can feel her brokenness.
Similarly when you try to sing and she can only gasp or make one small noise, which hits more after near the end when you first almost get the ability to sing back, but don't have it quite yet.
And the singing! At will! Restoring plants and singing for the peacocks. It's just so satisfying and pretty.
And the climbing back up after everything breaks down near the end. It's only a short and simple enough section but after the lushness of that final area it really feels so bleak.

I'm also a sucker for restoring colour or other things like plants (I still need to finish Okami but it's always glorious restoring things). Watching things build up. The way the hub comes together is magical. I just find the whole thing is a very soothing and touching exploration.

Alright, I finally had time to play the game. I'm about 2 hours in and I'm not sure what to think of it. The art-style and music are stunning, but the gameplay is just okay and I'm not sure about the story. I'll probably finish it later today.

I'll write some additional thoughts later today (I hope), but in the meantime: this is an 85/100 game and I can't rate it 85/100.

Right?

I gave it a 8/10 score, but it didn't feel quite right. But 9/10 is too high. For me, the game is closer to a 85 than it is a 80.

If Everdred doesn't listen to me, the child he never had (ignoring his existent children and the fact he's not old enough to be my dad), I don't think he'll listen to Crazy Old Tiamat ;)

Heck, that was the first thing you and I ever agreed on, and Everdred still didn't bend over backwards to refactor his code for us!
