The Literature Club is full of cute girls! Will you write the way into their heart? This game is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed.

Blasphemous

Blasphemous is a punishing action-platformer that combines the fast-paced, skilled combat of a hack-n-slash game with a deep and evocative narrative core, delivered through exploration of a huge universe comprised of non-linear levels.

Very excited for this year's Triple Creature Feature!! I already have Blasphemous installed from when I picked it up in the steam summer sale so I'll start with that I think.

On DOOM II, is there a 'best version' of the first two DOOM games? I have them both unlocked in DOOM Eternal so unless there's a stand-out better version I'll likely play them that way.

If you have them on Steam, you can play the original game:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2300/DOOM_II/

The Master levels: (Debatable if they are worth it)

https://store.steampowered.com/app/9160/Master_Levels_for_Doom_II/

And if you have D3:BFG

https://store.steampowered.com/app/208200/Doom_3_BFG_Edition/

You get access to No Rest For The Living. Although if not you can just go online looking for the WADs.

Oh, And play them with ZDoom. You'll be much happier.

As I said, I'm very excited to get back into Blasphemous, I'm planning to at least beat the bosses added with the DLC.

I've also beaten DOOM 2, so this time I'll try a bunch of mods. Any recommendations?

Thanks for the response! I've been recommended to go with GZDoom (ZDoom fork with OpenGL support) by a few people on the discord so I'm thinking I'll go that way.

This time I intend to play Doki Doki Literature Club and DOOM II: Hell On Earth. I Currently don't own Blasphemous but i do remember trying it at EGX last year and enjoying my time with the game def a difficult game to beat. As it was my Nomination I've started with DOOM II: Hell On Earth.

I'm up to 8th Level Tips and tricks. About to open the yellow door

Yeah it's more Doom. Some of the new enemies are huge and damn do they pack a punch. I'm not thrilled about the chaingun guys as they have the same problem I had with Doom 3 (projectiles can't be dodged) but damn was the 7th level hectic as fuck. Levels feel a bit more confusing though this time.

Well looks like it finally time for me to play Doki Doki Literature Club. I honestly don't know much about it as I've managed to avoid pretty much all spoilers over the years besides the fact it takes a severe turn at some point. My younger brother played this at some point a couple years ago and told me he wished he hadn't, so that honestly just made me more intrigued lol. I plan to play it some point this weekend.

I'm reading the reviews about Doki Doki and I don't think this is for me;the last Visual Novel I played was Long Live the Queen and I liked it, but now I think I need more action based game. Blasphemous, on the other side, is already on my playing tab waiting for me to have some time - probably by the end of the month!

How dare you.

Actually, GZDoom is the superior version. I don't know how I brain-farted that. Of course, there are so many different tools to run Doom in so many different ways you really can't go wrong with any of them.

Alright, I just finished "Doki Doki Literature Club!" and it was amazing!

I thought the writing was fantastic, it hinted at things that were going to happen. Like on the first playthrough when Monika talks about Sayori and says, "I hope she doesn't hurt herself" as a hint to the fact that the next day Sayuri hung herself. I really liked how Monika screwed with the files. I think it is a bit lame that you need to reinstall the game after you finish it if you want to play it again, but it's worth it for that writing. As this game is a visual novel, there was no gameplay, but for once I'm okay with that. Once you get to the point were Sayori hangs herself, you start to notice small things like how the piano that plays the background music occasionally goes off key to signify that somethings wrong, or how Natsuki is angrier and doesn't interact with you all to much I assume it's the same way with Yuri if you chose to go on Natsuki's route). Monika starts acting more hopeless as the game goes on because she is starting to think that nothing she does will make you love her, and how weird things will start happening to the girls like at one point when I tried showing Natsuki a poem and her eyes flew out of their sockets. I already knew about Sayuri's suicide, but it still completely caught me off guard.

Overall, this is a hard recommend for anyone who likes horror.

Just finished one of the DOOM 2 mods I downloaded: Shrine

Not only it's a mod for DOOM 2 but it got a free standalone release on itch.io and Steam (though it will run the same as the mod, with GZDoom) for people that do not own DOOM 2.

It's a total conversion and pretty short (1,5h) so I'd recommend it to any retro-shooter fan.

So I started Doki Doki Literature Club tonight. I've never played (if that's the right term lol) a visual novel before, so this is certainly a different experience for me. I haven't gotten far enough to see how it was eligible for this month, but I know something is obviously coming. I can certainly tell each of the characters has something else going on, seeing as their poems have started getting a bit more serious and darker, but nothing that seems particularly out of the ordinary so far. Except perhaps Monica, since her poems are really strange and foreboding, and she breaks the fourth wall at one point telling you should save the game before making decisions 👀.

But honestly the only horrific part of this game so far is the amount of poetry I've had to read, and I haven't actually minded it (I generally don't like poetry, nothing against it, its just not really my thing). I think the reason I've actually been into (or at least trying to be) these poems though is because its giving me a glimpse into these characters' psyches and making me wonder and theorize how this might turn eventually.

I should finish this tomorrow. I was originally planning to play it all in one go but I'm starting to get tired and since I'm a slower reader I have no idea how much longer I have left.

Right onto my end of week update

I've made it to the Icon of sin. the final boss. Damn is he fierce

Okay so i'm basically at the end so I might as well state my full opinion of the game

The new enemies which were added added alot of variety to the game. They are much more powerful then previous demons and thus need the use of the more heavier guns so the game is actively making me switch weapons for different situations. I think there are only 2 guns i rarely used and that's cause you quickly replace then with more powerful versions. There also a huge amount of enemies on screen at multiple points of the game which is pretty impressive for the age of the game especially as the sprites never fade and stay where they are throughout the level. Still the large amount of enemies maybe daunting but the game has allowed friendly fire from the enemies which causes them to in fight at points in the game which again for the age of the game is rather impressive and makes these larger fights much more funner to deal with.

Unfortunately there are still some problems with game mainly the level design. Most of the levels II found confusing at points in where i'm suppose to go and do. Certain doors need to be shot instead of opened but there isn't really any indication of which. Certain levels expect platforming the game without a jump button which while the sprint fine still feels weird to deal with and certain doors are open by triggers in the world but the triggers hit box is just too limited in size.

Overall I've enjoyed the game but not as much as Doom.

After this i'll move onto the No Rest for the Living add on in Doom 3: BFG edition and then onto Doki Doki Literature Club. I don't think i'll try any of the mods for the game I'm satisfied with my playthrough

So I finished Doki Doki Literature Club, and well it certainly ended up making me a bit on edge, so it was very effective I say. I also should have realized from when I played To the Moon and Finding Paradise, I must not be the fastest reader (maybe because I analyze half the time as I go) so it took me way longer than the usual on this site to complete. I ended up doing the Yuri route (I don't know how much it effects the game in the end) but it was definitely disturbing and made you feel horrible. Although there quite a few jumps scares, it certainly messed with your psychology a lot as well and made you feel tense and uneasy, which is something I like in horror. I'll probably elaborate more of my thoughts on it some other day, but I thought it is a very well made game and definitely achieves what it set out to do.

And if you are hesitant and/or worried to play it because of the warnings, probably best if you don't try this I think. (Not overly descriptive spoilers, but still hints at what's to come if you don't want to know) It does get really dark and go into some really touchy subjects involving major mental health issues, which certainly might set off people who may know someone or have personally had these issues. The game isn't afraid to get really graphic and catch you off guard with this stuff too.

I just finished Doki Doki Literature Club and very unpopular opinion I guess but I didn't like it :/

The beggining was all right, I liked trying to guess how it would turn scary. Then you have the first girl dying and a "the end" apparing on the screen. This kind of lost me, I was wondering if it was really the end and I had like a "bad" ending. So I had to look and the internet and obviously saw some spoilers.

Then I played the second act, and the visual effects and everything that are here to try to scare you didn't work on me.I don't know why, I usually get scared very easily while watching horror movies or playing horror video games. I wasn't shocked or anything when things happened and though it was predictable. (and I had seen spoilers so it didn't help.) I also got bored because some scenes were the same that in the first act and it was kinda repetitive.

Then the 3rd act when Monika keeps talking and talking. At that point I wasn't really much invested in the game anymore, and I had to search on the internet again to find how to "end" the game.

So it totally didn't work for me.

Alright, about 4 1/2 hours in to Doom ll and I retract my earlier statement about it not be as gripping as Doom or 2016. In fact, I actually like it more than both of them. I'll explain why when I'm done, but the game is very fun so far. I think I might also start Blasphemous later today.

Right completed DOOM II: Hell on Earth. My views hasn't changed but still never the less hairs my review:

DOOM II: Hell on Earth
Completion: October 05, 2020
Main+Extras: 9h 03m 38s
Notes: Hurt me Plenty
Review:
+New enemies are huge and varied
+Game set up to reward changing up weaponry
+Large amount of enmies on screen at once with the ability to cause infighting
-Level design can be confusing
-Platforming without jumping
-Trigger boxes are smaller then they need be.

Overview: The new enemies which were added added alot of variety to the game. They are much more powerful then previous demons and thus need the use of the more heavier guns so the game is actively making me switch weapons for different situations. I think there are only 2 guns i rarely used and that's cause you quickly replace then with more powerful versions. I started Blasphemous, and I don't think I like it. The atmosphere is nice and depressing as a game called blasphemous should be, but the gameplay and checkpoints are what ruin it for me. The checkpoints aren't close enough together, and the game tries to be a souls-like. The only problem with this is that the combat is to easy, it might get harder as it goes on, but as of now it's either dodge, parry, or spam the attack button as the enemy is out ranged. It doesn't even take a lot of trial and error, you have enough health to survive quite a few hits, and you have 2 healing items on you once you reach any checkpoints. The only times I have died so far are when I fall into spikes, or fall into the abyss. Hopefully it gets better as it goes on.

Okay now onto No Rest for Living.

I'm about half way through level 5

This honestly feels like a more fairer design version of the fourth episode of doom. It throws the big guns at you relatively quickly with very little in the way of heavy weaponry. Luckily the shotgun is still given early and I've been able to deal with hell demons that way. I'll have to see if there is any level later in this add on which pissed me off like the 6th level did in Doom
