DISCO ELYSIUM is a groundbreaking blend of hardboiled cop show and isometric RPG. Solve a massive, open ended case in a unique urban fantasy setting. Kick in doors, interrogate suspects, or just get lost exploring the gorgeously rendered city of Revachol. What kind of cop you are — is up to you.
When focusing on the main objectives, Disco Elysium is about 21 Hours in length. If you're a gamer that strives to see all aspects of the game, you are likely to spend around 42½ Hours to obtain 100% completion.

Not sure whether to join people on this GotM. I've already completed it but I will say this. This is currently my Favourite game of all time and I highly recommend it to everyone to at least give a go. Below is my review of the game:
Completion January 08, 2020
Main+Extras 24h 14m 18s
Notes Found badge and armor. No gun
Review
+Deliciously brilliant story telling
+Excellent use of the generic amnesic plot line to allow you rebuild a completely broken character
+Exhibits a great range of emotions. This game really shows the damage depression can have as well as laugh at most of the absurdities thoughts your character can have
-Can be overtly wordy in places. Throwing words that have no meaning at you.
-Weak ending although I feel this was intended
-Certain roll checks can block progression in certain quest lines
Overview: Disco Elysium is a fantastically written CRPG with an excellent set of characters and brilliant use of amnesia to build a character to your fancy. The world is brilliantly written and filled with a great variety of characters with complex thoughts and there own personal agendas. The plot slowly unfolds get more and more complex as domino effect takes place where it ultimately peters out in the end but still never the less is a great romp and does not take away from the experience. This game is well worth a play.
10/10

Oh hey, I just bought this game during the past sale. Don't know if I'll actually be able to complete it (or even start it for that matter) in the course of this month though since my current focus is Persona 5 and that's a notoriously lengthy game.

9 Yrs♥$✓#
That's totally fine. If/when you do play it and complete it, you can still come back here and post about it. I have posted in very old GotM threads in the past to add my thoughs about previous games.

I'm looking forward to playing this game this month. I wanted to buy it for my Switch because I think this'll be perfect for playing handheld on the go, but then I heard about the long loading times... So now I'm waiting for the PS4 version to arrive so that I can dive into it!

I used to listen to a podcast where comedians played D&D. I recall some disastrous things happening when they rolled a 1 and some amazing things when they rolled a 20. Already had my first bad roll:
(Sort-of first hour spoiler with suggestive dialog/themes): https://imgur.com/yqDaSnU
Never played D&D myself, but this feels like a fun single player D&D-like story but psychological opposed to fantasy with some social commentary.

I'm happy Disco Elysium is GOTM. I had started it once before but wasn't in the right mood for a long CRPG then and only played for a short while. But I've been eager to give it a proper try and now restarted it today.
I love the voice acting so much. Even the very first dialogue between your brain parts contains some of the best voices and intriguing lines I've ever heard in a game. The thought cabinet is going to be so much fun, I just know it.
I have heard very good things about the game's replayability/variation and I could already see in the fist half an hour how much changes by choosing a different special skill and making some different choices: I died pretty much immediately from a heart attack.
I have chosen a custom character with a focus on psyche and the Inland Empire specialization.

Btw I love that my character's pants are described as piss-soaked and cum-stained but it is the shirt that has a negative effect on "suggestion".

Cannot wait to play this. I want to try and finish earthbound first, hopefully I’ll be able to do that within the week.
I didn’t know this game existed until last week, I stumbled into a YouTuber list of best recent rpgs that people haven’t played. Been looking into it ever since and am really excited about it now.
Edit: just downloaded it on ps4

I'd started this a couple days before this month, played a couple shorter sessions and got back to it for a much chunkier session tonight. I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far! The... flow of text and skill checks and how they form a dialogue took a bit of getting used to at first, but I think I'm settled in now.
I went for a custom character with fairly average-ish stats - average intelligence, good psyche, average strength and weak motorics. With specialty skill of volition and I've a point to empathy.
Basically a wandering cloud of empathetic confusion that's easily distracted (mainly because I am also easily distracted but it works for him too). Case in point: meant to go back to investigating the body and wound up in a bookshop and 'solving' the owner's 'curse' problem before doing a bit more exploring. Still haven't gone back to body. Maybe next time for real.

Glad to see this winning a GotM spot. This is the modern day Planescape Torment. It's not 1:1 obviously but it scratches a very similar itch. I should replay it now that all the voice acting is in the game.

Dang, I've always wanted to play this but I don't think I'll get to it this month. Just picked up Halo Infinite, Mafia: DE, and started playing Deltarune.

I've made it through the first day and part way into the morning of the second. My character continues to be a mess and the sorriest cop, though some things are coming to light... contributing to the disaster. And Kim Kitsuragi is the best.
I finally investigated the body properly at around 11PM which is the perfect time to investigate a dead body clearly. We both failed to shoot it down and very messily in my case. Really shouldn't have tried to take the shot with the low chance I had but sometimes lucky rolls happen...
It was a very busy day and now staring at an ever-growing task list on day 2. Distraction city! Also got a froggy visor. Very important. And chose a cockatoo as a heraldic animal. Super Important.
Things I like so far:
Kim
The skills acting as characters in themselves - very cool
Lots of choice not just in conversation but in what to do though I could see it getting a little overwhelming sometimes
Interesting characters
A good blend of serious and humour
The voice acting

I have almost reached the end of day 1 and what a day it was!
I feel like I've done so much. My character is refusing his 'sorry' coptype, because he's better than that, but he did apologise for refusing his brain this thought. So there's that.
I accidentally looked at my face in the mirror and it's haunting me at the bottom of my screen. I hope it will recover, because it's not a pretty sight just now.
I feel quite organised.
I payed back the money I owed the hotel; I'm structuring my police ledger, I've got a beautiful new pen to make notes; and I'm learning all sorts of new stuff about the world and I have even found a potential witness who I will interview soon.
I don't know how I feel about the game yet. On one hand I like the dialogues, on the other hand I don't really know what I want to get out of the game. I'm happy there's constant progression, but I'm worried that will stop when I've discovered all there is to see... Maybe I shouldn't think about that yet, though. I know for a fact I can't play it after watching TV in the evening before I go to bed, because sleepy brains and this game are no match. That's OK though, because I should have time in the weekends to play it. I'm looking forward to progressing further and to get a few more tasks done!

I made it through Day 2. I’ve met Evrart, ergh he's slimy, and got the body down. Then stuffed it in the bear fridge, but not for long thanks to a really lucky skill check. Double sixes whoo. So I found the bullet, lots of ergh, and Kim’s taken the body now. Dealing with harbour things and that body was my main activity for the day while struggling with money…
Be careful with money because you have to get that room and sleep or it seems like time locks up at 2am... I wound up pawning off something I didn't really want to pawn to make up the last bit I needed. Or y'know, if you make it to him, just take the damn cheque from Everart...

I'm 5h46m in and still on the first day.
My character has become a hobo - which I though would just let me sleep on the streets but apparently not (??) and The Last Commie.
I really enjoy the game. The voice acting is amazing. I let all dialogues finish, probably also the reason why I'm still on the first day after almost 6 hours.

And yeah I can't remember how long my first day took. 6-8 hours somewhere in there. I'm at around 21 hours and in the early evening of the third day. So much to do and so many conversation trails to follow. I've definitely been sucked right in more than I ever expected

Oh no I couldn't... I'm a bit worried about money to be honest, but I didn't want to take his money! He made me sit on a wonky chair that hurt my bum-bum. I hope my refusal won't mean more pain in the back side, but at least my dignity is still in tact (a little bit at least... for the time being...).

If you have anything to pawn, postcards for this!, and of course can get the bottles to sell at Fritte. I wound up pawning off the antique rifle, which I didn't really want to but it sounds like from a friend who's already played that that was a fine choice. I managed; it was just tighter than wanted...
Come day 3 there comes a minor non-story spoiler: option for freedom from the room fees at least!

I've finished day 3 and did a bit into day 4. What a day it was as well:
Got to the fishing village
Free shack which shack or no, seems a lot cozier than the mess left behind at the Whirling
Swept up in insulindian phasmid hunting and general cryptozoology shenanigans and passion. Harry Cryptozoologist go! And dragging Kim in despite himself hehe
Found the cuirass and gloves of the armour set
Didn't make so much headway on the case itself... But I found a maybe-witness who I need to try to talk again in the evening and attempted and failed the door for Evrart
Karaoke! I dedicated it to Kim...
Played a board game! The sheer amount of text in this game... they even worked that out. It's incredible.
Probably other things I'm forgetting at the moment! Around 24 hours in and still having a great time.

I finished the game and I loved it!
Time: 29:49
Rating: 9/10
Notes: Completed all main things and a lot of side quests: found armour, gun, badge; Boring Cop; Moralist; 21% of PS4 Trophies
My thoughts:
I'm so happy I ended up playing this game for Game of the Month. At first I thought it would be way to static, and that I would be bored. I do appreciate a good novel/visual novel but I was worried I wouldn't have enough to do in the game to pass the time. That was only the case once. I grabbed a book and that quickly fixed the issue. It was nighttime before I knew it. I wonder how much of this game is up to the choices you make, but I feel that the whole story was a perfect experience for me.
What I liked:
* The characters all really grew on me. Their visuals & their voices were all really distinct. I could listen to everyone for hours (which I did).
* The options you get feel like they really matter. I like that. I felt immersed in the world.
* I liked switching around clothing to get a certain skill higher. I liked that that is an option, and that you can't just grow by increasing the skill tree.
* I feel really lucky because most dice throws went well for me. I liked how easily I progressed with both side quests and main quest. There was one side quest where I got stuck for a longer time (the church one), but in the end I got through it (by drinking a bit of alcohol and crossing my fingers).
* There is so much to do and so much to explore, but it wasn't like it increased exponentially every day which I thought was nicely balanced.
* The ending blew my mind a little bit.
* All the Dutch words & names. I love how they made my native language sound like it's coming from a faraway place.
* Kim is my best friend.
What I didn't like:
* Every now and then I couldn't progress, but that's a really minor gripe because the games does everything to help you progress.
* I sometimes skimmed through the political statements and talks.
All-in-all I really enjoyed my experience. It's not a game I would replay to see all the different options (like the Dark Pictures Anthology), but I would like to see a bit of a different outcome of one of the ending events. It turned bloody quite fast for me, if people who played the game know what I mean.
----
I'm really curious to hear what happened during other playthroughs!
Spoiler alert:
Six or seven people died on me. Ruby was the first to go unfortunately, she killed herself. During the tribunal or stand off, all the guys in ceramic outfit died, four or five of Titus' gang died including Lizzie and old man Theo :-(. I spotted the cryptic at the end, which gave me a really peaceful feeling and I saw my ex... something walk away from me. Kim will join my precinct and we're proud that we solved the murder and found the suspect.
Did everyone else have the same experience? I'm curious how much different the story is for everyone!

For me Ruby also killed herself but the stand off thank fully for me only 2 were shot dead. I spotted the cryptic at the end as well but when asking Kim to take a photo I got too close and spooked it before we could get any evidence. The ex seems to always walk away and I asked when I'll see her again and she mentioned the same time next week in the same dream and then she walked off from me. Kim said I was a sorry commie cop but still effective at my job... not sure he's joining our precinct or not but we left on good terms

Haven't played in a bit, was focusing on SMT3 and my VN.
Played about 30 minutes today and got some luck with two low % checks. I shot the belt off the victim, making it easier to progress with the investigation.
I also got lucky with an even lower check with figuring out how the car was being driven into the sign. But all that seemed to lead to was a side quest that Kim knows I won't complete.
And dang, I think Kim is right. There are a lot of side quests I have a feeling I won't complete most of them. Overwhelming with my ADHD but it helps that there is a clock next to the time sensitive quests.
Also, is this why the game was banned in Australia?

Or is it more the hard drugs.
A podcast I was listening to pointed out that this movie (An old James Bond film) that had a ton of hard drug usage gave a big warning about cigarettes in the credits when the movie had a lot of hard drugs and no warning for that.

Voice acting definitely not disappointing. Very interesting change of pace from what I am used to. I am sure I’ll enjoy it, although not a huge fan of timed events in games.

Late but I finally finished and just wow. I'm kind of sad I'm done now.
I think my final stats were something like:
Communist: 22
Fascist: 1
Ultraliberal: 0
Moralist: 10
I can't remember my other ones as well, just highest in Sorry followed by Boring. Superstar started to creep in and only ended up with a point or two in apocalypse.
In answer to how things went by the end:
I managed to stop Ruby from shooting herself and let her go. Let Klassje go earlier too. The tribunal went badly with 6 killed--most of the Hardie boys including Titus and Liz :(, and two of the mercs. The other got taken to a private hospital. I don't think there's anything you can really do about your dream with Dora. I saw, talked to and got the photo of the Phasmid. I was not expecting to actually get to see it! I'm so happy. And asked Kim to join 41. I was a sorry communist cop.
