When a mean-spirited hamster named Spat starts squabbles among the rest of the hamsters, Hamtaro and Bijou set out to get friends to make up. As they mend fences, they get help from Harmony, an angelic hamster with a heart of gold. Along the way, they have to learn the secret hamster language known as Ham-Chat in order to solve problems and move on.

Played almost two hours today in two one-hour sessions. The game is extremely simple as one would imagine, but it's just so cute! I love all the little sprites of the hamsters doing the different words and just acting it out. It just feels wholesome.

It is somewhat confusing at times to me. though. Sometimes I just don't know exactly where I should be going and just end up running around the area talking to people that I have already talked and interacting with things I've already interacted with. But I think that's more on me than on the game....I think...

Also, we've been posting a couple of screenshots on the thread of the HLTB Discord if anyone is interested. The game just makes me smile

Has anyone successfully played an emulated version?

I've tried on multiple devices including PC, and they all get stuck on the name screen - it seems to be a known issue, which was fixed but then reintroduced.

It occurs when you try to confirm the name, and a closing circle animation is supposed to appear.

I did some quick testing and it seems to work on RetroArch with the VBA Next core.

Thank you so much PlushWraith!

I still couldn't get it working on my Vita even with that core (it's running an older version of RetroArch), but I have it working on my PC now, so I can give it a go - thanks for responding :)

I've had only bad experiences playing non Vita/PSP games on my Vita. It's strange though because YouTubers rave about how the Vita is such an emulation beast, but I seriously wonder whether they actually played the games?
Examples include Metroid AM2R port had constant crashes (which I endured) and a game breaking bug near the end for good measure (which made the game unbeatable).
Doom ports iirc had like super sensitive controls which made it artificially more difficult.
GBA games don't look quite right because of the screen size difference, and also the emulator would often freeze/crash when changing settings - required to get some games to run at all.

Yeah after the above experiences I stopped using Vita for emulation.

Edit: oh I just remembered Grim Fandango on the Vita was the absolute WORST! Crashes like every 15-30 minutes I exaggerate not. Totally ruined the experience. The weird thing is the crashes started around halfway through so I didn't know beforehand, otherwise I would have jumped platform, but I was already too far in. That was truly a test of will.

I played through the first area. It is adorable. Simple but the different menu of words for actions to try different things is cute.

Can't help but like these fuzzballs

Completed today after 9h 20m. After 5 hours I started using some guides, learned how to press b (I completely forgot to check if you could use b to run or speed through chat) and I used some emulator functions during frustrating parts.

Love the concept of learning words and using them to go through an adventure. But a lot of things were hidden and if I didn't have a guide or emulator features this could have taken 15+ hours easily.

It's been like a full year and Hamtaro finally won the vote. This is a monumental and iconic moment for the HLTB community.

I finally got around to hack my 3DS XL that I was so generously gifted by Abatage. And what better game to play first on this system than Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak?
From what I'm reading online, this game specifically is also notoriously hard to emulate because of a freezing error on that name screen in the beginning that was mentioned here before. So, it was actually really nice to avoid all of that nonsense by being able to play the ROM via Nintendo's native Virtual Console software by using "Virtual Injections". It's running as smoothly as it could. lol

I'm really liking it so far, honestly. It looks really pretty and I'm enjoying the gameplay of exploring an environment and talking to characters to solve puzzles. I kinda like the whole hamster word learning mechanic reminds me a bit of text adventures in how finding the right words to interact with things is important.

The only other game I've played emulated via the Vita is the SNES game Chrono Trigger. No crashes, although there was a little bit of slowdown in a couple of battles.

I didn't know about Virtual Injection, might have to give that a try - I could have played it on my 3DS XL.

Instead, I'm playing on a 17" laptop monitor, and it's surprising attractive, the hamsters are definitely cute and the words for the dictionary are well chosen and funny, the conversations are well-translated, and I'm enjoying my time so far. I've got as far as Boo Manor (but I play slowly).

I used a walkthrough for the dancing part - not sure how you're supposed to figure that out on your own and I didn't have the patience!

Not the sort of game I'd usually pick, so GOTM has introduced me to something new :)

Sadly I've retired the hamsters. It's a softer retirement than my others; maybe one day I will go back to it. The ingredients are there: cute of course, charming colourful aesthetic, fun animations, and the words system opens the way to some fun puzzling. It's a little laborious but not so much I couldn't look past it. I don't know. I just have no drive to go back to it.

I am glad to see others enjoying it, however, and that these hamsters finally won haha.

Took forever to finish it, but I did. Fairly slow month in general, only my third game finished this month

Pretty good, especially considering it's a licensed kids game and those don't have the greatest track record. I liked all the little animations for the ham-words, and the game was quite adorable in general.
