Solid story overall. Exploration was a bit of a dragging experience since there's so much empty spaces with hardly anything to find, but I had fun with the mystery solving mechanics and puzzles; plus the landscapes looked absolutely stunning at times.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

I'd say it's a solid 7/10-not bad.The puzzles won't give you a headache, and the main time sink is more about exploring to find things and places. It's not too tricky, just takes some patience.
Considering it's not the newest game, the graphics are awesome and the atmosphere keeps you engaged. The ending was a bit of a curveball. It's decent and adds an interesting twist. If you're into mysteries with a bit of puzzle-solving and a surprising conclusion, give it a go. It's not the toughest game, but it's a decent adventure with an interesting story.

Pretty mediocre "walking simulator" game. The most important part of a "walking simulator", the story, is decent. But, it doesn't stand up against the other problems with the game. I do have to say the world and landscape are beautiful and the music adds a lot to the atmosphere. But, there is too much unused space. The game starts out saying it "does not hold your hand" which I usually prefer. But, you spend so much time looking into blind holes (paths and areas that lead to nowhere) and trying to figure out which path you're supposed to take next. I don't mind having to figure it out myself. But, when you spend more time looking for the next thing rather than experiencing it, you've got a problem. Along those lines, there were multiple times I had to lookup a walkthrough. I kept missing basic interactables because I wasn't looking the right way when a cutscene ended. HLTB has it at a 4 hour completion. I reckon I would have done it in an hour and a half, if not for the poor map design and obtuse item placement. I did enjoy the Cthulu area, It's been a while since I pissed myself.Updated 8.5 Months Ago

An open world(ish) walk sim/mystery puzzle game where you walk around a beautiful deserted landscape to find out what happened to Ethan Carter and his family. The ambition to “not hold your hand” is both a strength and a weakness. It’s fun to just freely explore and find out what happened. But it’s annoying that you don’t know what you missed, which is really easy to do. Getting around is very slow so you don’t really want to backtrack.

Walkathons are boring, though I had high hopes for vanishing of ethan carter. Heard only praise for it's presentation, engagement and story - however the game didn't impress me at all.A buggy, underwhelming gaming experience - a story twist that isn't even worth the several hours I spent. MEH.

Although the game has a nice atmosphere, I can't bear with the fact that it doesn't "hold my hand". The lack of instructions is frustrating to me. I walked around for 35 min, bumped into a puzzle and then I checked a walkthrough. Suddenly I was on the "Scene 4" of the game? Not for me...Updated 1 Year Ago

Plot-driven walking sim with puzzles! Sound familiar?! Still gud tho.One of the better plots I've seen and one of the best endings I've seen.
Pretty game. Great ambient music. Rather short. No replay value whatsoever. The portal puzzle can cram a fire hose up it's ass, otherwise everything else was fair. Would've been nice to not have to hold down Left Shift the entire game.

-Not for everyone;
The Astronauts are absolute madlads. They've created an adventure game that doesn't suck, yet also doesn't hold your hand. Better yet, even at its absolute worst (The caves) it still pulls you in and keeps you guessing. I'd lie if I said I liked that section, but if this is the worst on offer, I'll gladly take more games like this. Generally I'm rather bad at adventure game, only finishing about half on my own...and I played the easier ones! (Deponia, Broken Sword, Longest Journey).
In essence, you focus your attention on points of interest and interact with them, basically taking each piece of the puzzle and putting them together. You do have to walk from one item to the other, but IMO this adds to the experience and the distances are sensible anyway. You may very well miss some pieces or puzzles entirely until the very end, a decision I'm not sure I'm on board with, but thankfully at that very end you are offered a fast-travel hub, since, well, the story is a detective mystery (and you're supposed to solve it)
A young boy goes missing and you Paul Prospero, are tasked with finding him and what went on in Red Creek Valley. The gameplay and story are so deeply intertwined and compelling I'd rather let you find out more on your own.
To be fair, half this game's appeal is in its breathtaking presentation, especially for the time. The game uses photogrammetry (basically many pictures => assets) and it looks spectacular for its time. In many ways it holds up today. If you mess around it's clear it's not very dynamic but it looks so good overall you won't care much. Particularly since it's decently optimized. I recommend the Redux edition, if only for the endgame fast-travel. But if you have a REALLY ancient system, the original works too.
Overall, an experience unlike any other. Try it, even if you might not like it's still unique and hopefully someone takes inspiration from it eventually.

I liked this game, it had a good and interesting story once it got going. Visually, it's a great looking game, wanted to get some screen shot but GOG sucks with the screen shot function. Game play took a bit to work out, I was about an hour or so into the game before I figured out what I was supposed to do, what I was looking for, and what to do with what I found. Almost gave up on it because it seemed like a boring ass walking sim with nothing going on in the beginning. In the end I liked this game and the story it told.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

i gives this game 68%pros:nice story and musical, enjoyable and calming game experience
cons: no hint at all.. no clue.. no marker.. bad accesibility...
so because of that i gives this game 68%.. it can add more features in the game (i.e fast travel before end the game... not after finish the game)
and got 80% score solid

'The Vanishing of Ethan Carter' has an amazing story, the all atmosphere of it, the soundtrack, the telling of the story bit by bit, its a lot of fun. also the game is running on a very good game engine and it looks fantastic.one small bad sign, is that the game has a bug, that make the game stuck (only the mouse and the zoom works, and the character cant move), because this game do not have a saving at any point system, it was a bummer, but I finished it, so it was good.
I totally recommend this game to anyone who like a good story.

Do yourself a favor and go through this one with a walkthrough. If there were a "hint" mechanism that would prevent you from accidentally bypassing a "story" I would rate this 90 or 100. As of this writing a player can very easily skip massive sections of the story and find themselves at the end...ruining the experience. You are given a map at the end suggesting you've missed areas with "???". You are provided the opportunity to teleport to that area and complete the section. The problem is that as you experience the missed story you already know the outcome and you really need to experience the story somewhat linearly.
What a missed opportunity. :(

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a great game to play in a single afternoon or two. It's fairly short, but is just the right length for the type of game it is. It is a puzzle game, but also a walking simulator. Everything in the game is polished and very pretty. The music fits well, and the game changes atmosphere a few times. The whole package just fits together well. The vanishing of Ethan carter has 4 main puzzles to solve that all follow the same solving method. Once you get the first one solved, solving the others is fairly repetitious. However, there are 5 other big puzzles that are all very different from each other and very creative. I really enjoyed the variety of those and wished that there were a few more of them, but really, the game is the perfect length.
There isn't much more to say. The game is a short, well made, dark puzzle game, but once you've played through it, you know all it's tricks.

A middling walking simulator with a few tricks up its sleeve. For starters, the photogrammetry they used to realize the environments is really breathtaking. I'm not sure why more games don't use this technique for photorealism. Maybe because it's difficult to achieve or it lacks artistic direction. The game opens with the message 'This game won't hold your hand'. It's a nice sentiment and a good idea but not executed well. It amounts to walking around until you find interactable objects and then walk around some more. This also extends to the story which is admittedly pretty disjointed. You play a detective searching for a missing boy with unnerving things stacking up in your search. It feels at home in the tone of a Lovecraft story and the narrative structure of the average walking sim. The presentation amounts to slightly cliche narration and the same ol' diary/newspaper clippings scattered in the environment. The content of the story is fine and it has a pretty great ending. But I'm reticent to call most of the presentation or themes *good*. The disconnected nature of how it tells the story makes it difficult for it to build tension. You play through each of the scenes until the game just kind of ends.
Walking sims don't like gameplay, it's scary to them. But unfortunately it is engaging so maybe they should throw something in. How about we have the player chase some blue lights and then arbitrarily assign a number to a bunch of mannequins before we play a cutscene? Suffice to say this mechanic was pretty laughable. At least it didn't take much time. Each chapter does have a unique gameplay mechanic to go along with it. Some of them are fine, others are a bit dull, I don't remember most of them to be honest.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter strikes a alright tone. But some of the decisions in the design didn't pan out. Not holding the players hand is good, not designing levels to constantly engage the player is bad. If you want to make a game inscrutable and obscure and still be engaging, be Pathologic or probably don't try. Otherwise you might end up like this game, getting players to find needles in haystacks to progress. The story wants to be sleek but is floppy in its structure. The gameplay and story don't connect in any meaningful way either, although this is a problem with most walking simulators. The game has some of its production value going for it, and some decent narrative moments at the end, but otherwise the design just made it a bit lukewarm to play.

"The Vanishing of Ethan Carter" is an exploration/detective walking simulator.Graphics and world building - The landscapes and the world building is amazing. Combine that with awesome graphics and you've got yourself a highly enjoyable experience.
Story - Definitely one of the grimmest games that I've played. It's a twisted and disturbing story but a captivating one at that.
Gameplay - It's a walking simulator so you have to walk around quite a bit. It's not as linear as some other walking sims though, it requires you to search around the area and look behind the corners to find clues for your detective work.
Characters - There are quite a few characters, all tied to the story, most not very likable for reasons that you will find out when you're playing the game.
Voice acting - Good. There weren't any cheap/fake sounding characters.
Soundtrack - Helped with creating the eerie atmosphere. Ambient sounds made some places even more creepy.
Probably one of the best walking sims out there so I'd recommend it to anyone who likes this genre.
