This was my first roguelike. It's not a genre I thought I would like much due to the repetitive, wasteful, and potentially frustrating gameplay loop. Hades started out like this for me. I was soon disheartened by having to run through the same four levels and bosses over and over again. But as I played, every death I got stronger. My progress was steady, incremental, and nearly each run I made progress over the previous one. All of which felt rewarding to play. The weapons and boons brought some great variety in gameplay and tactics, giving some novelty to each run. I liked rebuilding a brand new character each time.
The plot is basically a family drama. Not the most interesting plot, but enough to keep me engaged and curious about what would happen next. Combat was excellent -- frenetic and fast-paced, it was engaging and exciting.
My goal with this game was primarily just to get through the story, focusing less on some of the game mechanics, especially those that added more challenge (like Heat). I maxed out what I could do with the Mirror and basic contractor upgrades with Gems. Because of this quick runthrough, there are several aspects of the game I never engaged with, such as Heat, Keepsakes (I mostly stuck with Skelly's), Ambrosia, and I didn't even ever get to using the gun weapon. I reached the end credits on my 37th escape (and activated God Mode at around attempt 14).
Overall, I found this game a lot of fun. I enjoyed the gameplay quite a bit, and the plot, characters, and dialogue were decent. I found it repetitive, but not nearly as frustrating as I initially thought it'd be. I couldn't play for a long session, but jumping in & doing one run was a good time and tampered any negative feelings.
The game was repetitive, yet when I hit the credits, I had the desire to go back into it again.

Hades is an incredible game that hits all the right notes, especially if you're into rogue-likes. The progression feels so rewarding—on your first run, you'll probably struggle with the first boss, but as you keep playing and upgrading, you'll start pushing further and further. I've put in about 70 hours and I'm close to getting all the achievements. The lore in this game is just on another level. There's so much dialogue and interaction, and it never gets old. Every character is fleshed out, and you can build relationships with them, which adds an emotional layer to the game. Some moments are hilarious, others hit you right in the feels. Plus, there are a ton of hidden twists and secrets that keep things interesting.
Gameplay-wise, it’s flawless. Each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses, and there's a ton of variety. You can evolve aspects of each weapon, and every form can be upgraded, unlocking even more possibilities. It’s crazy how much work must have gone into this. Every run feels unique because of the different bonuses, gods that help you, and rooms you have to clear. And then there's the heat system—adding extra difficulty by giving enemies more health or putting you on a timer. Even the heat system has secrets to uncover.
I can’t talk about Hades without mentioning the artistic direction and graphics. The art style is just perfect for the game, with so much attention to detail in the animations and effects, especially depending on which gods you get help from. You can also upgrade your base to make it more beautiful and detailed, which adds a nice personal touch as you progress.
And the music—holy crap, it’s a masterpiece. Every track fits the game perfectly, setting the mood and enhancing the experience. It’s just another aspect where Hades excels.
Honestly, I might be forgetting a few things because there's just so much to love about this game. But yeah, Hades is a must-play, and I can't recommend it enough.
NB: I think i'm close to stop playing, not because it's bad, but because it's very time consuming, and I have almost all the achievements and secrets. I think i'm finished and I dont want to be disgusted by the game. I think 70 hours is not bad. We will see in the following days if I can stop playing :D
NB2: 74 hours, i'm stopping now. One of my best experience.

Hades is fantastic. It's an addictive blend of rushing through encounters and building your weapons so you utterly annihilate anything standing in your path. The art style is gorgeous, the music is great, and the bits of dialogue scattered throughout the game are very good. More than that though, Hades has a proper story that interweaves with the rougelite mechanics in truly novel ways. However, it does have its flaws. Some people have criticized Hades for not having enough differences between each run, and I think this is partially true. Of course, random Boon choices will limit the way you can build your weapons and (for certain weapons) the Hammers can more seriously alter the way you play, but generally, every run is the same.
Furthermore, the balance of some of the weapons seems out of whack. I did some looking around and there doesn't seem to be any consensus as to what weapon is best, but I will say I was seriously struggling with getting clears (I got 1 at ~13 runs and then couldn't get one for another 15 or so) until I used Aegis w/ Aspect of Zeus. Aegis is good in general as a lot of Hades is about preserving health and Aegis makes that absurdly easy, especially against the wall of the final boss (Aegis feels like a hard counter to most of the moveset), but Aspect of Zeus is just absurd. Aspect of Zeus + Zeus Boon for special attacks (or a sufficiently upgraded Aspect of Zeus + just about anything) = you win. Just throwing out a special with Aspect of Zeus Lvl 1 and Common Zeus special Boon Lvl 1 can do up to ~650 damage - and you can shield/attack as you wish while the special is still going. You don't even have to learn the timing to dodge the spear swipes of the final boss or get a specific few boons to make it survivable - you can easily crush the final boss without even thinking. I genuinely felt like I was cheating while using this build because I cleared the game every time I used Aspect of Zeus. It took so much out of the game when I knew I could try other weapons or I could just use Aspect of Zeus and win.
This also obliterated the pacing of the story as the story mostly advances when you clear, and I did all my clears consecutively, so the story kind of just instantly progressed. The story is still good, but tying it to progression like this has risks - and I think those risks are well worth taking in a first attempt to tie a narrative into a roguelite like this.
Without my issues with the progression, balancing, and repetitiveness, Hades could easily be a 95%, but with these flaws I think 85% is a good score for it.

This game is GOD-like (pun intended)!! It's simply the perfect roguelike, for both veterans and newcomers to the genre. The gameplay is simply flawless, even after 100+ runs, it never gets old. The story is told both during and in-between runs, which fits perfectly with the roguelike gameplay. No run is the same and even after all these runs, there's still plenty of new dialogue to uncover.
And then there are ways to gradually tune up the difficulty in the endgame, even after completing the epilogue. So you can basically keep going indefinitely while the game will keep challenging you.
The game looks and sounds perfectly, too. Like with all the previous Supergiant games, I couldn't resist playing the soundtrack outside the game.
I will definitely never get tired of playing this. The only reason I stopped playing after all these hours, is to make time for other games.

Completely unmissable for anyone who can even tolerate shoot-em-ups with some bullet hell. Fantastic gameplay and progression loop, amazing art style, music and the best voice acting and script I've ever found in a game. It's proper hard at first, especially getting to know the moves of the final boss. You can use God Mode to make it a bit easier if you're having trouble getting into the game. I ended up sinking 200 hours to collect everything and unlock nearly all of the dialogue, and still had trouble saying 'OK time to put this down and go play something else'.

This might be a perfect video game. It has an insanely addicting gameplay loop with tons of variety in play-style and weapons. It gives just enough well-written story at a perfect pace to keep you wanting more. The only thing keeping me from 100-percenting this game is probably the shame that I can't stop playing it as my backlog builds. I expect to play it more, though.Updated 2.5 Weeks Ago

This game was played in two large chunks. The first time I played it I was amazed. It captivated me until the point where all I wanted to do was play it. It was truly fun. Great combat, great enemies, great progression, and as a lover of mythology, great characters. I not only absolutely love the art style, but the personalities and lore of every Olympian and minor god made an excellent atmosphere. Eventually I stopped playing because I could never clear Elysiums final fight without failing or having no health left and dying on the next floor. I took a break. Then, I came back a few weeks later and the skill gap disappeared. I really became better every escape attempt, something that made me want to keep playing, as it was very satisfying. I always felt like I was getting closer every time. The ending was a little unsatisfying but that is what’s to be expected. Overall: 10/10. Top notch combat, art, and story.Updated 3.5 Weeks Ago

A rare gem. Probably my first 10/10 and the first roguelike I truly enjoyed. Why is that? Well, there's a deep story, a perfectly logical die and repeat loop, excellent gameplay, incredible artwork and music, and much, much more.
Yes, there are some drawbacks, but they are so minor in comparison to the overall game, especially from a small indie team, that I honestly don't want to deduct any "points" from this masterpiece creation.
The only real disappointment if you're looking for a story is that even if you enable the "easy mode" in game, you'll still have to go through dozens and dozens of runs just to get to the credits. And even more if you want to see the epilogue and finish all the side quests.
Yeah, some say it's a point of the game; have fun and enjoy the run. But I bet for those people, if the story ends in 20-30 hours, they can continue to play for hundreds of hours or as long as they please. So why not make the story develop faster for the one who wants it instead of locking you behind nearly one story progression per run?
Anyway, could the quests progress faster? Probably. Are my 70+ runs worth it? Defenitly.

Charming, fun, fast-paced game with a rich story that's a modern take on Greek Mythology. It could have been dark and grim, and I'm glad they took the other route and went bright and inviting. Case in point: The "fearsome" Cerberus is simply adorable and I want one.The progression system is addictive, with added benefit of releasing more of the story bit-by-bit as you grow stronger. Eventually you will earn enough buffs that the once-enormous odds swing in your favor. For me it took 21 runs to finally win. Note that you'll need to win 10 times to get the game's ending! And it's worth it.
I did not like Bastion, which was Supergiant's first real game. Good to see them polish things up. This game is nearly flawless.
Bad things about Hades... hmm... The graphics during fights can be so flashy that I can't tell what's going on and I lose my guy in all the enemies and colorful casts and animations and crap going on. At those times I resort to mashing buttons because I can't see -- which is not satisfying and also results in most of my losses. Sometimes the backgrounds don't help either. I found that I'd have to squint at the backgrounds too much to see tiny hidden stuff, like fishing points and rare vases. A minor frustration.
Still, 10/10 and possibly the best thing to come from 2020. Sequel please!

No wonder this game won awards. It's a blast and I can't believe I let it sit in my backlog for this long.
The story is very compelling and is slowly revealed over the course of multiple runs. Besides the main plot, a lot of world building takes place with the interpersonal relationships between all the different supporting characters. I did not expect this level of quality in a "action button masher"
The game plays like a hack-and-slash (ninja gaiden or DMC). It's a dungeon-crawling rogue in that runs are ephemeral and there's randomness to the boons you receive and how that affects the strategy you adopt. The action is tight and it always feels fair when it comes to losing, due to your own mechanical skills.
The game has a beautiful and aesthetic art style. The hand-drawn portraits, sprites, lush and detailed environments, animations, etc. It's very well-composed.
The music is excellent. Boss fight, sound effects, voice acting, background music for each stage.
Replayability is basically part of the rogue-like genre. To expand a bit more, part of what makes this game appealing to replay is that the story continues to be expanded, even after you beat Hades the first time. And you discover that there are more weapons and upgrades. There's a "heat" system that you can use to add more handicaps, which increase the boss rewards. I don't know if there's going to be a true end to this game, if it's possible to put down and say that you've ran out of things to do.

I think Hades is a really well-made game and I have few negatives, only out of personal preferences. I'm just not a huge fan of rogue-likes, for one. I can get sucked in, for sure, but when the magic fades I don't have much of an inclination to pick it up again outside of a run or two. And the camera style is one that makes me feel weird. Top-down diagonal, or something like that. I also know many people liked the story, and I didn't really mind it, but it was giving me uncomfortable flashbacks to the 'story' from Neon WhiteUpdated 1.5 Months Ago

This game is a smooth ride through the underworld, even when the screen's exploding with particle effects, enemies, and projectiles the gameplay is smooth, no matter how chaotic things get. Now, the combat. You can mix and match weapons, archetypes, boons, and weapon upgrades, and even after a two dozen playthroughs, I never had the same build twice. It's like a new adventure every time. The combat is incredibly fun and fluid, no jankiness whatsoever. The only thing holding you back is your own skill and reaction time.
The writing in this game is top-notch. What really stands out is how organic the storytelling feels. There's a narrator, but he's used sparingly, mostly for characters who can't speak, like Cerberus. You get to know Zagreus and the rest of the cast so well, making their arcs that much more impactful.
The art style is outstanding, and the soundtrack it's perfect. You won't want to turn it off. It fits the game so well and makes every encounter more intense and interesting.
Now, I'll be honest, roguelikes have never been my thing. I love progression and tend to be a bit of a completionist. But Hades changed my mind about the whole genre. It's great for folks who've never played a roguelike. My biggest gripe with the genre is the soft-resetting after every run, but Hades handles it beautifully. You make progress every time you go out, both mechanically and in the story. Hades single-handedly changed my opinion on an entire genre of game. It takes a rare type of game to do that.
TL;DR; 9/10 Just dive in. It's an experience worth having, whether you're a fan of roguelikes or not.

-84-An awesome game, which caters on many different aspects. The music is nice, the gameplay works well (although a little spammy and chaotic sometimes) and the biggest plus is the rich story. Hades has a complex dialogue system, where different talks trigger depending on your game actions, which makes the roguelike formula stay fresh over a long period of time. The story itself is really well done as well and is in a nice harmony with the gameplay loop. The aesthetics are very well done and beautiful as well.
Downsides of the game include the sometimes spammy and chaotic - feeling combat and some repetitiveness over time. The repetition kind of comes from the perspective of having done over 100 runs over 110 hours though, so that can be forgiven.
All in all a very nice game that always felt nice to start up and do another run in.

fun game, but too repetitive for a roguelike. great when it comes to presentation: the art, story, and voice acting are all done very well. the sense of progression is nice. upgrading zagreus and his weapons as you progress through the game is very rewarding. the only issue is that the underworld is very repetitive; you're going through the same chambers, fighting the same enemies, every time. the combat itself is great, it just needs more. there's not enough variety when it comes to the power-ups you come across either. the gameplay, progression, and presentation are enough to make hades a pretty good game, but it can be a little disappointing as a roguelike.Updated 2.5 Months Ago
