I just couldn't get comfortable with the controls, and that killed this game. It's possibly the most beautiful game I've ever played, but the controls made it too difficult for me. I've beaten Celeste and made it through the White Palace in Hollow Knight, but those games were still fun and frustrating at the same time. Ori just felt frustrating.Updated 2 Weeks Ago

I really loved this game. As soon as I started it, I was stunned by how beautiful it is. I’m not usually someone who goes for platformers but this was a really great game to play as it was easily accessible and all of the power-ups and being able to save wherever was what made it great for me. The platforming was challenging but it was more than rewarding in the challenging parts, you were always rewarded with progression in the beautiful story or a new power-up, exploration was always great because of that. It was the perfect length and such an easy game to play while you’re watching a show in the background. Even though I died over 800+ times (💀), I didn’t get sick of the game once. I can’t wait to play the sequel.

Ori and the Blind forest 8.5/10:-Gameplay feels nice
-Story is also very entertaining
-A lot of collectible and secret paths
Had to deduct a few points because of:
-Combat is boring, just click your mouse
-Puzzles get frustrating
-The game bugs out a lot of times where your mouse won't be visible anymore making a few levels impossible
-Hated the ending, the tree should have suffered

Not bad, but not excellent. Game mechanics ended up being quite fun, but movement controls were a bit inaccurate. Spoilers: the "escaping" levels of the game were poorly designed in my opinion, and for me they became repetitive very quickly.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Took me long enough to get to this title for sure. And *man* have I been missing out. Truly an excellent search-action game, with a brilliant story and tremendous visuals. Playing this game on Oled really accentuates the smooth blacks and painterly aesthetic. In fact this game is so beautiful, I find it kind of hard to belive that it runs on Unity. Idk, just surprised me while going through the credits. Ori and the Blind Forest feels like a Pixar movie in all honesty. A very simple story but told so effectively through raw emotion that it really drives home the entire experience, with top notch animation to boot as well. I have some gripes with the save system and a couple game design choices truly left me baffled, leading to some unneccessary difficulty spikes here and there, but all in all this is a brisk title that any fan of platformers or search-action games needs to consider as a must-play title.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

A beautifully charming game, featuring great level design, a cute protagonist, and a wonderful world. Arguably the game's strongest point is its soundtrack, which is hauntingly gorgeous from the title menu all the way until the end credits. The gameplay time is perfect - not too short, not too long. The game's strengths are its art direction and movement; exploring the world through puzzle solving and platforming is extremely satisfying. The Ginso Tree and Mount Horu stand out for their tricky but fair platforming challenges. The save system would have worked better with just autosaves. I really appreciate how quickly you can move through the world with late-game abilities, making item cleanup before the last dungeon very smooth, despite how linear the game actually is. Ori's best moments come following each escape, when newly restored elements allow for completely new exploration of previously traversed sections (especially the purified swamp), and it feels like a missed opportunity to have the world explorable following the final dungeon, given the abrupt ending.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

This game is absolutely beautiful, but it's not without its flaws. The combat is a bit clunky and honestly not all that interesting, and changing the difficulty just makes enemies have more health and do more damage which isn't really fun. So sticking to normal difficulty is probably best. The platforming is decent, but at times very annoying as well, and I'm saying this as someone who is pretty decent at platformers. I loved celeste and I thought it was so incredibly well made, so when I compare this game to celeste it's just disappointment. The game is still really great, the story is nice and sad, and the gameplay although flawed, is still enjoyable. A solid 8/10 experience.Updated 4 Months Ago

It's hard to judge Ori by today standards, since the 'metroidvania' design has almost become a genre in itself now, with great and more recent references. It's a beautiful game, I think everyone can agree on that, but it has some serious flaws. Combat system is clunky and not convincing, enemies tend to respawn too quickly, and platforming sections are sometimes painful, since the controls are far from the perfect balance of (for example) Hollow Knight. Beyond that, Ori has some real issues with its difficulty curve. The first hours are easy, almost peaceful, and then suddenly : the Ginso Tree. The game automatically stops being fun from this point. Precision platforming is no problem for me at one condition : having sharp controls. Ori hasn't. The character is floaty, has the worst double jump I've ever seen and most of the upgrades are, well... let's say disputable. And trust me, the infamous Ginso Tree escaping is a joke regarding other areas. On paper, this is an interesting variation on the very concept of a boss fight, but the execution is unfair since escape sections are the only occasions when you're totally stuck and can't go back. Since you won't be helped by the controls, either you're good enough at this sort of thing, or you'll be doomed to try dozens of times before succeeding... or giving up. I'm afraid many players will choose option 2, especially the youngest, despite everything the game has to offer.
That being said, Ori, of course, have quality. Productions values are unbelievable, story is moving, puzzles are pretty okay and level design, if not crazy inventive, is clever enough. The save system can be tricky, but is pretty interesting (and very useful). But all in all, I've found it disappointing. Making it a top 5 metroidvania is, IMO, unreasonable (or in any case no longer relevant in 2024). Hollow Knight is way better. Blasphemous games are better. Axiom Verge, released the same month, isn't as original, but is clearly better too. And the Big Two, of course, aka Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night, are a thousand times better in almost every aspect.

Perfection is something nonexistent in video games, but this game is as close as you can get to it. The art is simply amazing, colorful, and just beautiful. The story is great, a little bit sad in the prologue. The music... oh, the music, I've been getting constant ear orgasms throughout the whole playthrough. The difficulty is just perfect, not too hard, and not quite easy. A game that I surely won't forget soon.

Pros- The feeling of stringing a seemingly endless amount of inputs, and the overall flow of said stringing was phenomenal. Whenever you got to segments that enabled this type of bouncy movement, those were the moments where I wished I could do that all the time, but sadly the game would need to be level based like in sonic instead of a metroidvania for that to be the case.
- Anything visual is outstanding and timeless, but out of this bunch the cutscenes were on another level. I just really appreciate how they communicated the plot without the actual need of text, any narrator message was just for more flavor.
- I don’t think I’d be able to sing enough praises to the controller and responsiveness of the character, all while keeping said character visuals super smooth. I saw an interview of the devs about this, and the amount of transitions they did are insane, normally you’d just snap the character to the new animation so it stays responsive, but they actually made transitions for every potential movement permutation without sacrificing control. This makes ori always look like it’s moving naturally from one pose to the next, adding an impeccable layer to the smoothness of the movement. Not to mention that I did feel that I was able to get the character move where I wanted, whenever I wanted, making me default to blame myself over a platforming blunder more than blaming the level itself (like seriously, spam the glider leaf button on the floating segments, the acceleration is perfect).
- Short, but not too short. I just am at an age where I’d rather have 10 hours of quality, instead of an extra 10-20 of repeats (despite the fact I quite enjoy the controller).
Neutral
- There were two or three instances in which I was very confused as to where I should be going next. I always had a general marker that pointed to the next destination, but there were some instances in which the platforming challenge wasn’t super clear. The one that comes to mind is on the ice area where gravity can shift if you walked on slopes that transitioned from floor to wall, I had no clue there were some cubes that just let you walk around them, which were the only way to clear the level, had to look a video guide.
- Played on hard, so I sometimes felt like I died more than I should. But that was my decision, so I can’t hold it against the game that much.
Cons
- It does get quite frustrating when you are stumped at a specific platforming section, and can’t really do much other than retry until you do it. Moments like this drove home that it basically meshed but made simpler things that you find on rage quit platformers like “I Want To Be The Boshi”. Far from as bad as in those types of games, but not my cup of tea either way.
- I got tricked into thinking that greater firepower would’ve been more beneficial than it was as an upgrade. Where it wouldn’t have been much of an issue if there was an option to refund skill points.
