Good action for GBC hardwareGood
- a good amount of abilities to use and jumping was implemented well.
- combat felt fluent and a variety of different enemies
- the other world was pretty interesting.
- the seasons affecting certain things and being incorporated into puzzles was cool.
Bad
- some times the next objective can get ambiguous. Not sure where to go, like when being required to collect the stones to open the door.

The score is based on the linked game experience, which I really liked. The game itself is a standard 2d zelda, good but nothing shines in particular. I liked this game's main mechanic, the ages, better that the season's one. This one is also a lot harder.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

The Oracle series is a very interesting take on the Zelda formula by Capcom (better, IMHO, that everything Nintendo tried with Zelda in the 2ks). It's hard to choose one over the other since they were meant to make a whole thing, I strongly recommend to play both in a row.Updated 5 Months Ago

Updated 9 Months Ago

Oracle of Ages/Seasons: Alone, extremely solid Zelda games with good puzzles, fun items, great characters, and interesting mechanics. Together, one of the best Zelda experiences there is. Plus half a point for being made by a 3rd party and blowing it out of the water regardless.Updated 10.5 Months Ago

This game is generally weaker than its counterpart owing to an abundance of rather uninspired items and over reliance on block pushing and coloured switch puzzles and it's relatively binary time travel gimmick, but it's still very compelling to explore the overworld and find new itemsUpdated 1 Year Ago

I really do not comprehend some of the complaints I've seen on some reviews here. This is easily the best 2D Zelda by a very wide margin, at least in flow and structure. Dungeons too hard? Maybe, some of them like Jabu Jabu's Belly, Mermaid's Cave and the Ancient Tomb might be the most complex dungeons in the series: basically if you found the Water Temple or Great Bay Temple hard, this might not be for you; but if you enjoy complex mechanisms and puzzles in dungeons, you will have the time of your life. Only two buttons that require constant swapping? Yes, it's a GameBoy game, but compared to how absurdly slow Link's Awakening's menus are, in the Oracles it feels like gliding through menus on how relatively fast they are. Pacing feels off? In the first three dungeons, the game advances in a very methodical pacing, but after you finish the Crown Dungeon, the exploration and story will flow better than any Zelda game.I will agree the game is in dire need of a remake, preferably in the Link's Awakening engine or similar, especially to remaster the soundtrack as it has an absurd amount of excellent songs, like Nayru's Song, Zora's Village, Skull Dungeon, and the 'sad' theme. Dunno, just really solid and people just hating because of the difficulty.

Although Oracle of Ages is definitely the weaker of the Oracle games, it's still a very solid 2D Zelda title with yet another time-bending mechanic. Unfortunately, the ability to go back in time, something the series has already explored in Ocarina of Time, doesn't feel as unique as the ability to move between the four seasons, resulting in an alternate world that feels like an uninspired version of A Link to the Past's Dark World. Where this game improves on A Link to the Past, however, is with its charm and characters, many of which carry over from Oracle of Seasons (or carry over to Oracle of Seasons if playing Ages first). The dungeons and boss fighters are, sadly, probably the weakest in the series up to this point outside of the NES titles, but playing this game alongside the superior Seasons still results in a satisfying, unique experience.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

Perhaps its due to being a Capcom developed game rather than Nintendo, but I found this game to be an incoherent mess when compared to the Zelda games contemporary and prior to this one. It just has an off feeling compared to Nintendo developed Zelda titles, like bad fanfiction. I missed this and Seasons back in the day, and it turns out I didnt miss anything. I did finish the game, but at no point did I ever find myself looking forward to playing after the first hour or so. Its going to be a big struggle to even start Seasons.

I think having OoS and OoA on separate gameboy systems side by side to reveal all optional content would make for a great puzzle game. But that is not how it feels playing them sequentially on the 3DS. A bit boring at length. I preferred Ages to Seasons, but after having played Seasons for 20+ hours and getting pretty sick of it, I resorted to walkthrough in parts of Ages to ease frustrations.Updated 2.5 Years Ago

I'm just so mixed on this game. It has some really good parts but it also has some really annoying parts. All the back tracking. Having to switch items at basically every second. Just so exhausting. Overall I liked this game better than Oracle of Seasons. The dungeons were more puzzle based which was nice and I enjoyed the story and characters more. However there were two incredibly frustrating and difficult sections that were tedious and required. Poor inventory system and input lag also contributed to those as well. The game could use a remake with better controls and inventory. I don't plan to play it again unless it gets a remake at some point for some quality of life improvements.Updated 3 Years Ago

Since this game was developed by Capcom, there is a lot of zelda tropes and formulas that are twisted/used differently. Obviously the game still feels like it was developed by Nintendo, but it's different enough where you can kinda notice it. And that's definitely not a bad thing. This particular Oracle game is mostly about puzzle solving. (At least compared to Oracle of Seasons) And the puzzle solving is amazing, so many ways to use the time travel mechanic. The dungeons are great, except for one water themed one that was just ok. Many different areas and secrets to find and explore. And the soundtrack is great, but doesn't introduce many new tracks that really stand out.Updated 4 Years Ago

Compared to oracle of seasons, dungeons and boss puzzles are substantially more difficult. The map layout only transitions between two states: past and future; and both are technically different.Unlike the seasons gimmick, which only swaps the layout of a certain area. The pea shooter and switch-in hookshot are pretty cool items, wish those were more recurrent elements from Link's toolset though.

Oracle of Ages utilizes a time travel mechanic akin to the dark/light world of A Link tot the Past. By playing a song on the harp, specific warp spaces allow Link to travel back in time, with a song to return to the present anywhere on the world map being obtained later. Though complicates later dungeons, the world map tends to open up in bigger chunks than it does in Oracle if Seasons, and it is quite easy to navigate.Though it takes place in a different land, some of the characters, such as Maple and the ring shop owner, play the same role in Ages as they did in Seasons. While the plot is more prevalent than its counterpart’s, it’s still pretty thin, but NPCs are talkative and many give hints to aid Link’s quest. I preferred the music in Ages when comparing to Seasons, as I felt the dungeon themes were more appropriate for the mood.
The two Oracle games share most of the same dungeon items with some minor differences. Though they play identically, their formulas differ in that Ages is much more puzzle oriented, with finding a way into and completing the last three dungeons being especially brutal. The late game swimming item is needlessly tedious by requiring continuous tapping of the D-pad to move, and the the last third of the game features a lot of swimming. Bosses act more as puzzles than as difficult fights, and while most are easy to kill, they often require some thinking and experimenting to find out how to damage them at all. With a linked game, however, the duology ends with a very difficult boss rush.

Even though it's derivative from Link's Awakening, it's packed with many things that make it fresh and fun. Maybe too much sometimes (e.g. rings, mini games)? Having a past version of the world that you can move into and out of and effect events in the present was pretty cool and sets up really neat puzzles, especially when mixed w/ a dungeon that spans both times for example. I felt the game really got cool when you become able to transport from anywhere in the present to the past (and of course later when you can do the reverse). Amusingly enough, I feel like "Link to the Past" technically would've been a better title for this game.
Even though I felt like there were a lot, the mini games were pretty fun and didn't make you feel like you had to take too much time off the main quest to do them.
The story felt a little weak to me, but doesn't get in the way so that was fine. I liked some of the side characters, like Rafton and the animal helpers. I have mixed feelings about the inclusion of Gorons and Zora in the game. On one hand I like that it connects the many lands of the Zelda universe by having these races appear in them, but OTOH it makes these other lands feel less unique. It was annoying to see Tingle also weasel in; thankfully his role is extremely minor and he's actually fairly likable in this game.
Music is pretty good.
The inevitable question: Which did you like better, Seasons or Ages?
They're about even for me. I like the aesthetic of Seasons w/ how the world changes more, and the music there, but moving into and out of the past in Ages made for some more interesting puzzles.
Btw, I finished this as a linked game about 15 years after finishing Seasons, and didn't feel like there was a lot of context I was missing that you needed to remember from the other game. The gameplay holds up really well and is still very fun.

Very obscure puzzles with no indication of how to progress (Also game at many times breaks it's own rules and mechanics set in place at earlier points for more convenient puzzle design for the makers [very frusturating]), both within dungeons and the overworld. Traveling between ages in the overworld makes for a very messy and hazy environment, that is until the last song is learned, then it is much easier to traverse and you are less punished for exploration and making mistakes (getting lost). Overall the game suffers from that syndrome many older games have, when the player is constantly unsure of where to go next, or how to get there. Ruins the experience.Updated 10.5 Years Ago
