Tears of the kingdom is a visual and technical miracle on the nintendo switch, let's start with this. While yes, the frame rate is fixed at 30fps, it doesn't ruin the experience at all, making the action as viable as in his predecessor. It might have some drops from time to time, especcially in more packed areas, but they are not that deep as to ruin the whole experience. I must point out that the game runs incredibly well both in the dock and in handheld mode. With specifics out of the way, let's talk story. It is pretty simple and straightforward, narrated in a very similar way (as not to say the exact same way) as BOTW's one. Some like it, others don't, but seeing the open world so full of activities and people that always add something to the lore of the world of Hyrule whenever you come across them, truly makes you think why other developers can't do it too. TOTK gave me the same feeling I got when playin The Witcher 3, WIld Hunt: both games made their world feel alive, hence the player feeling more immersed into it.
For what concerns the gameplay, the addition of basically turning Link in a master builder in order for him (and the player) to build anything that passes through his mind had me dubious at first, but then made the whole experience a fantastic ride and made me feel like when I was 9, building the worst crafted vehicles and stuff with my lego blocks. The building mechanic makes everything easier, from fights that can be easily exploited with LITERAL TANKS to moving up and down Hyrule. On the other hand, it made the horse almost completely useless except in certain quests where it was required to use it (im looking at you musical band of Hyrule).
The addition of the sky island was a nice touch, especially for those who played Skyward Sword, while the whole Depths part was a bit superfluous if not for the fun and more challenging battles of the Coloseums. One thing i have to give to the Depths, and those who designed it, is that the atmosphere is perfect, making you feel like you're trapped in a place that is hostile to you in every aspect, from its inhabitants to the very walls and ground you are walking on. Then again, as soon as you unlock fast travel from the Depths they are not so scary anymore so, yeah. At least they tried.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the kingdom managed in the difficult task of making me appreciate open world games even more than its predecessor did, and now that we know its the last game in the series with these mechanics and setting, I can't wait for what's next.

A lot of freedom, but can get tediousGood
- the world makes you want to explore. There are various things you can see in the distance, that lures the player to go and find out what it is about.
- building and crafting things to help you get around and solve puzzles can be fun and rewarding. The way it all works with the physics in such an intuitive way is very impressive.
- the parry and dodge mechanics are great. Mid air slow motion archery is nice.
- fusing items together was really neat. This meant even random crap weapons could be powerful. And connecting things to arrows to give it a bonus effect was cool.
- how the elements affected everything to enemies and objects was very interesting to observe. There felt like an endless amount of things you could try.
- Shrine puzzles were mostly creative, and fun to solve
- Hunting in the wild for food was fun.
- sky tower made getting around a lot easier
- the addition of the underground and sky areas was great. Expanded the world a lot.
- the story is deeper than traditional Zelda games, with some play with time travel, which I like.
- The voice acting was decent overall. I think Zelda's British accent is too heavy.
- the behavior and personalities of the NPCs were very zelda-esque. Glad they retained that. I also like how the dialogues are updated if you completed certain quests.
Bad
- although crafting is fun, it can feel very tedious after awhile. And because there's so much freedom with how you can solve puzzles, there are often times where you can cheese it, resulting the puzzle being boring. For example, I can literally climb the whole fire temple and solve every puzzle, while skipping all the crafting.
- the 4 main dungeons and story in each area were very weak, except with Riju.
- the main quest bosses were too easy. The final boss was alright.
- a lot of the past being told through geoglyphs player has to look for isn't a good way to tell the story. Because for players who's only interested with the main quest, they will not get the full story. And even if you find them all, you may be watching the cutscenes out of order such that you end up spoiling the story for yourself.

The game is awesome and genre defining. They did so many thing perfectly, it's amazing. I'll limit myself to the most impressive achievements.
Open World. There are so many open world games, and in most of them the world is terrible. You might not notice at first, but TotK (and BotW as well) are incredibly well crafted. It's full of things to do, without being overwhelming. Gives good reason to explore, gives the chance to go straight for the story. There is a talk by the dev and it's amazing how much attention they paid. And the best thing is that when you play you don't notice, because it just works.
In-game editor. Not sure how to call it, but I meant the ability to build stuff in game. Normally I skip those things as I don't really care, but here is so amazing you can't help but try to break the game with it. You can break it, and it's fine. The incredible amount of videos showing the craziest, or smartest, creations is a testament to the incredible power of the editor.
Technically the game is awesome. Looks great, sounds great, plays great. You move across an immense map with no slowdowns. And it's on a switch that's not the most powerful console out there.
The story is very good. Possibly the best Zelda story. More adult, more interesting characters, while still remaining somewhat light.
Combat didn't change much and is still very good.
They got rid of those awful dungeons. The new ones are a lot better.
Economy stays relevant forever, as playing normally you won't even get close to earn as much as you can spend. The good news is that you don't really need everything, but you have goals toward which you want to go.
The biggest flaw of this game is that it's quite similar to Breath of the Wild. True, this game could not have been so magnificent without such a solid foundation, but I believe it's wrong to call it a glorified DLC. There is enough new content and changes to be its own game. And a wonderful one at that.

Haven’t been this disappointed like this in a long time. I’ve talked to multiple people to try and figure out why it felt so underwhelming, yet it still is a solid game. For context, Zelda is easily my favorite video game franchise and Wind Waker is my favorite video game of all time, so I had ungodly high expectations for it. I won’t write the entire 10-page essay I could write just for brevity’s sake, but of course making a literal recreation of Breath of the Wild’s mechanics + sky and underground sections + the most impressive and complexly-coded vehicle creator this earth has seen would be a good game, but at times it feels it was not worth waiting 6 years. In that time I finished all the mainline Zelda games, graduated high school and college, and now have a job, only to be received with the same game with a different (but gorgeous) coat of paint. I cannot explain how disappointing it was to find all this things masterfully teased in the trailers to be the exact thing we already had… but again. Geoglyphs were just memories but easier to find, regional phenomena were just Divine Beasts masquerading as actual dungeons, those rocks with spiral trails were just more shrines. Hell, the game even ends the same way: it took me 9 months and 250 hours, to be at the same place where Breath of the Wild ended??? It still has some incredible moments that will go down in all our memories, like the Colgera fight, the incredible build-up for most temples, and just being a war criminal with Zonai tech on poor lil’ bokoblins; but it also has some of the laziest design I’ve seen from Nintendo, mainly the Water temple, the depths, and Ganondorf being such an uninteresting villain, which just felt insulting. Nearing completion I feared that classic “oh no I don’t want for it to end,” but now I have no desire to go back in ever again.

Absolutely amazing game. When Breath of the Wild was released, many of us couldn't imagine bigger and better sandbox game. I thought that BotW was THE ULTIMATE sandbox, but now I know I was wrong. Breath of the Wild was kind of messiah of sandboxes. No one, ever before, made bigger and better sandbox. Tears of the Kingdom however, is not a messiah, but it's an innovator - it improves the mechanics and adds more. They say that surface map of Hyrule is the same as it was in Breath of the Wild, but when I'm traversing it, I don't know what to expect behind the corner, even when I spent almost 200hrs in the predecessor. You start in another place of the world, and some places which was relatively safe in BotW are dangerous in TotK and vice versa. On top of that, TotK adds sky islands and underground with their own resources. Underground seems pretty dangerous at first, but if you know how to traverse it, it can be pretty soothing experience with almost no background music and with particles in the air. If you are bored with the gameplay loop on the surface, or in the underground, you can seamlessly go somewhere else. Breath of the Wild was a game about loneliness. Our protagonist was asleep for 100 years and no one knew who he was. But Tears of the Kingdom is a game about relationships. Relationships you made in BotW. The story take place few years after the ending of BotW and you can see kids grew up, changes in the open world, etc. Nintendo made the game to be friendly to new players, so you can learn about the story from BotW in different places in Hyrule from different people. I still recommend playing BotW first, because of meeting new friends who are present in TotK, and some side quests changing the open world, in a way which we see now in TotK. However, there are some plot holes, like, where are the Divine Beasts? Why the sun and the moon are going backwards now? The soundtrack is very good and in my opinion is better than it was in BotW. Themes of the towns are pretty much the same, but themes in shrines, battle themes are new and feel fresh. And let's not forget about references to older Zelda titles in boss battle themes, and in other places too. Tears of the Kingdom is a great puzzle sandbox with the vast, open world. Basically all abilities you have are used to solving puzzles. There is no one proper way to solve the puzzles, you can solve it however you want and that's the most important part of this game. It gives the players a lot of satisfaction when they solve the puzzles in their own way, that's why the playthrough would be different for each of us. That was the case in BotW too, but with the abilities such as Ultrahand, or Fuse, the possibilities are endless. Physics engine is as good as it was in BotW - it's absolutely phenomenal. In TotK it spread its wings to the maximum with the new abilities. Ultrahand modifies how the player looks at things in Hyrule. Now, a tree is not just another tree, but you can connect trunks and make a raft, or a roof to make a fire when it rains, or you can climb high places, and there are a lot of things like that you can use to achieve your own goals. Fuse is the developers' answer to durability complains in BotW. Not only fusing something durable to a weapon increases its durability, or something powerful increases its attack power, but it also gives it its properties. For example, when you attach ice fruit to a weapon, it gives freezing attack to it. Again, you can try combining different things in your own, creative way. On top of that, there is Ascend which gives you the ability to float through ceilings, and which indeed sometimes feels like cheating (as the developers said in an interview), and Recall which rewinds time. The story was, like it was in BotW, written after they had got gameplay mechanics done. Nintendo had a tough task optimizing it that you can discover it in any order, so it's again in form of memories. However, I recommend discovering it in a "proper" order, as in shown in the Forgotten Temple (from left to right, it's not a spoiler as it's one of the first main quests). The story doesn't have a lot of time relatively to playthrough time, and it's clearly visible that the main point of this game is gameplay. However, you can dive into lore deeper if you want, youtubers make hours-long videos about lore in this game. The game works in 30 fps, sometimes more stable, sometimes less, sometimes framerate drops to 20-25 fps. For me hardware limitations were visible when something you built vanishes after you wander too far away from that, and it's usually not that far... But even with that said, Tears of the Kingdom is one of the best games of all time. I give it a solid 10/10.Updated 1 Month Ago

Probably the greatest open world ever made, the depth in traversal and physics is insane and the world feels gigantic, the gameplay is also fun albeit simplistic, i loved my time with this game and registered over 200 hours with it.But my only gripes with it are that the story wasn't good, it was not like BOTW where its barely there, but it was poorly executed especially at the end where it undermined everything it was building up for, that and the amount of recycled and repetitive content are my only issues with it, because other than that it was amazing.

Honestly phenomenal. The scale of Tears of the Kingdom blew me away, but what really kept me hooked was the presentation and cutscenes. I was hooked the entire way through and always looked forward to seeing what absolutely beautiful everything of the cutscenes, besides every character being perfectly designed the Zonai culture was so rich and beautiful with all of their architecture. Now from a gameplay perspective I think Breath of the Wild was better, I found traversal frustrating when I was used to the vertical movement of BotW and the building mechanic not really worth engaging with until I got Autobuild (65 hours in but that was kinda on me). Nonetheless, I will be coming back and playing more and I expect to put a similar amount of time as I put into BotW. Also that ending was so amazing and I really really really loved it.

Way better and Zelda like than BotW, story was much more intense and present throughout the game. Had of lot of fun and love the idea of having not 2 but 3 layers of the map :) However I was not a fan of this constructing power. My major complain is that this was such a PAIN to complete omg... The korok seeds are so tedious and even though the caves and wells were a great addition it was so repetitive and not at all enjoyable to complete. I get that it was my choice to complete it but I have the memory of having a lot of fun finding all heart pieces through side quests and other collectibles in other games, as a completionnist, this is really disappointing to me. Especially that you are not rewarded AT ALL for completing. Idk they could have done all enhancements free since you already spent probably 50-100 hours collecting those little shits.
I do have to say that I love the new outfits but kinda disappointed the old ones were just re-used and not redesigned, same goes for the music..

I tried play it, but it's completely wrong. The game flees like a Sandbox not an adventure game. I did't like the main mechanic about build things, and indeed it is not necessary in any moment for continue, just only for the temples. When I was playing suddenly I was avoiding build things... And yes, we got 3 maps but 2 of them feels completely empty and 1 repetitive. 255 hours later, I finally saw the credits roll in this game and I still can't believe it's actually over; it felt like an experience of a lifetime. As someone who loved Breath of the Wild and had sky-high (pun intended) expectations for Tears of the Kingdoms, I got to say, the game lived up to my expectations.
Now, while the combat system and the visuals remain largely the same as in Breath of the Wild, everything else has been improved; the story is more engaging, the puzzles are more creative, there's more enemy variety, the map has been changed in many areas and there's much more content overall.
However, being able to explore islands in the goddamn sky and the gloomy depths, paired up with Breath of the Wild's unmatched sense of exploration and even more player freedom, a huge world filled with so much content, 100 hours of playtime feels like barely scratching the surface, is an unbelievable achievement that I didn't think was possible for videogames.
And I thought Breath of the Wild had mind-blowing abilities and mechanics but Tears of the Kingdom puts it to shame with its new set of abilities and tweaks; they're simply game-changing.
With that being said though, I wish the sky islands were slightly more dense and the frame rate was more consistent.
Pros:
+ Addictive gameplay
+ Groundbreaking new ideas
+ Massive world filled with nearly endless amount of content
+ Genius mechanics
+ Gorgeous visuals & audio
Cons:
- Frame drops at times
Narrative: 5/10
Gameplay: 10/10
Content: 10/10
Characters: 6/10
Music: 9/10
Art Style: 10/10
Final Rating: 10/10
- Masterpiece -
While Breath of the Wild was a breath of fresh air for the Open World genre, Tears of the Kingdom raises the bar for the Open World genre up to the skies both figuratively and literally, and it goes even further by redefining the limits of videogames in general.
This is a "once-in-5-years" kind of game, an achievement in the videogame industry and a strong contender for being the best videogame experience I've ever had.
Do I recommend it?:
It makes Breath of the Wild obsolete, so it's a must-play.

After the success of Breath of the Wild, of course Tears of the Kingdom was going to do well. It had a really strong foundation to stand on. However, when I say TotK was better in *almost* every way, I'm not lying! For a start, the story in TotK was much stronger than BotW's. BotW went with the approach of everything was lost 100 years ago and now you are trying to deal with the aftermath and correct the wrongs. It's a fine story however I'm never a fan of this style of story telling as I no longer feel as if I'm part of the story. I had no influence in the way the world is now shaping out, I'm just here to deal with it, kill the bad guy, see the credits roll.
TotK is much more direct with it's story. For a start, you are actually playing the opening section before all of the evil is let out which is much better as I, the player, feel much more connected to the down fall of the kingdom. After which, I now need to deal with the events from the opening. As you clear each part of the map, the way the area looks and the way the NPCs talk to you, you feel much more connected to the world. You can feel the world changing from your actions as a hero.
The dungeons are much better now as I was never a fan of the devine beasts style and we get our traditional style bosses back instead of just 4 clones of the final boss. The world feels more alive and as mentioned before, clearing areas and side quests actually change the world and how the NPCs behave so you actually feel like you are making progress as you help out across the kingdom.
Now, I did say almost better in every way and I will now explain why this is only a 9/10. We are also entering spoiler teritory so watch out!
Arrows are vital yet feel really rare. Compared to BotW, TotK seems to have a real arrow shortage thanks to the fact that there is no longer elemental arrow types due to the fuse function. As a result, shops only sell 4 bundles of 5 arrows for a total of 20 arrows where as before you would find 3 bundles of 5 arrows usually for 3 different types of arrows resulting in 45 arrows total. Now you can TP away from the shop and back again to refresh the shop however this does take some time and becomes quite expensive after awhile. This is made worse by the fact that arrows are almost required in a lot of areas. While there are ways to work around some of them, a lot of times I have found myself needing to leave an area, buy arrows and TP back as there's no way to continue and I have ran out.
Spoiler warning: Talking about the guardian replacement enemy. If you're yet to encounter them, turn back now!
Finally, and this is really spoliery so spoiler tags, go! The replacement for guardians are very iffy. The gloom hands are much scarier than the guardians as being caught off guard with little to no supplies will make for a challenging fight, especially with a lack of gloom removal foods. However, in my 185 hours of currect playtime, I have ran into them only twice (2) outside of scripted spawns. I know the guardians were only limited to specific areas of the map but they were much more presant than the gloom hands are and made exploring areas much more risky. The phantom ganon that spwans from the gloom hands isn't a challenge at all as you can fight him like you would any other monster. The only challenge is again, you need gloom removal foods if you aren't confident you won't be hit.
Overall, I feel like Tears of the Kingdom was a big step up from Breath of the Wild and while I would still prefer a more traditional Zelda game like Skyward Sword or Wind Waker, I welcome Tears of the Kingdom with open arms as a really enjoyable Open World RPG and probably one of my Top 5 Zelda games of all time.

However the story is straigh up shit, somehow worse than botw and the world map is not changed enough to be interesting, additionally each of the dungeons was also worse than botw, including the shrines. its very dissapointing that this game took 7 years to come out with such lack luster content. the new maps being the sky and the underground (cant remember the name) are extremly monotenous and repetive, this has to be one of the worst zelda games unfortunately even if it has some of the most fun mechanics.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

Tears of the Kingdom is not a perfect game. Sometimes, it was extremely frustrating to see glaring issues from BoTW left completely unaddressed (food and cooking are still completely busted, for example). In spite of that, what it achieves on the front of player freedom and exploration is truly remarkable. You cannot play another game like Tears of the Kingdom. There will probably never be another game like Tears of the Kingdom ever again. There probably shouldn't be.
This game is weird. It reusing the map from the previous game is weird. The way it sometimes pretends like that previous game maybe didn't happen is weird. Building gigantic vehicles with cannons on them in a Zelda game is strange. The Depths is like 80% open nothing terrain. That's weird.
But despite all that weirdness and an endless list of little tweaks I would make to the game, I came away from it feeling like I had completed one of the most magical gaming experiences I will ever have. I didn't think I would feel that way as I was playing as all the little issues nagged at me. But in the end, when I step back and look at the totality of what Nintendo has done here... they killed it.
I cannot even begin to imagine what another Zelda game looks like after this. Where on Earth do you go from here? I'm glad it's not a problem I have to solve. For now, I am happy with the Zelda we have gotten, and I look forward to what this team can dream up next.

Great gameplay, great story, great time. Loved finding out all the lore and piecing it together, and the lore itself rocks. I just love stories like this too.Updated 4 Months Ago
