As the year draws to an end, I find myself reflecting on the games I've managed to complete this year. I don't tend to rank my completions each year as I find it really difficult to do so, but I do find I tend to have a few 'favourites' that I've finished during the year, alongside a few games I finished but didn't enjoy very much, and probably would never play again.
Looking through my list, I have a few that I really enjoyed - including a couple that have introduced me to a new series I never tried before.
The first being Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. This was my first entry in the Ys series, and since then I've played Ys Origin and Ys IX: Monstrom Nox. I loved the style of gameplay and RPG elements this game introduced, along with the vague Metroidvania-like exploration and storyline. Not many RPGs that I remember deal with being shipwrecked, so it was new on a story level for me as well. I really enjoyed my time with it and I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of the series in the next few years (and Ys X, coming out in 2023).
Nobody Saves the World was another. I've been a fan of Drinkbox games since Guacamelee, so I was interested in trying this one as soon as it came to Switch and I wasn't disappointed. Some great gameplay ideas, a ton of humour and customisation, and generally lots of fun.
Guardians of the Galaxy was another. Despite some crunchy framerates in some really busy, really open areas towards the end of the game (and some overly bullet spongy enemies), the game itself was stellar, with a good story, lots of planet hopping and some genuinely great characterisation. My wife gave it a go later in the year and I was surprised to find some of the choices she made in the game led her to genuinely different levels and areas than what I experienced, which is another plus when it comes to a replay.
Death's Door an isometric game that has been called a 'souls like'. This one was fun, it had an interesting story and the levels were well designed. There was some post game grinding to see the true ending which was a real shame though.
There's a few more I'll probably add a bit later down the line. However, my least favourite completions this year were:
Halo: Infinite - I can't quite put my finger on why, but I really didn't find myself enjoying this. I think I might be 'done' with the Halo franchise as a whole, which is a shame because I used to be a huge fan. The game was OK, the story was rubbish and 343 really don't seem to know what they're doing with the series. Very disappointed.
Horizon: Forbidden West - I loved Zero Dawn, from the world design to solving the mystery of just how the world ended. sadly, Forbidden West just didn't hit it for me. The story wasn't great (especially from the point where they introduce the humans from Sirius, which led to some batshit insane things by the end, the world was too full in that classic Ubisoft style, and puzzles were trivial when Aloy would almost instantly give you the solution. The music and graphics were phenomenal as always and I did like the characters, but again, something about this game really put me off.
So, there you have it for now. How about you?

Since I have just started this PS4/PS5 account I will go off of my main PS4 account that I have played most of the year.
Worst Completions
#3: My Aunt is a Witch.
A point and click vita game that has really poor translation and just a poor game overall. A sad way for the Vita to go out as one of the last games.
#2: A Sketchbook about her Sun.
A sort of visual novel, but just really a soundtrack with some looping visuals that sort of tells a narrative. You don't even have to play it, I found out afterwards you dont have to make the dialogue choices. There is actually a trophy for just letting the game play itself, which is just dumb.
#1: Richy's Nightmares
A really poor puzzle platformer. It is supposed to be close to like Limbo or Inside. The game though performs really poorly. I had a problem with just simple jumping. It is so bad that I ended up using the admin codes that were released after the game came out. Pressing the code will send you to the end of the level and the second code unlocks all the collectables. You can do that for each level. Not my proudest moment, but I just wanted the game completed and done.
Best Completions:
#3: SAO Lost Song
Sword Art is one of my top series and this game was alot of fun. I know the story is not cannon but it was a great Vita title.
#2: Deliver us the Moon:
This was one of my first PS5 completions. Even better that it was free with PS Plus. Great story and I was hooked. I cannot wait for the sequel.
#1: Journey
I have already played Flower and Flow, this one though is so much fun. A great short title to put between longer games.
Other completions:
Brothers: A tale of two sons
Need a Packet?
Eternal Hope
Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins
A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV
Armello
Witchcrafty
A Memoir Blue
A Street Cat Tale
Unpacking
A Short Hike
Fernz Gate
Gone Home
Last Stop
Little Misfortune
Sayonara Wild Hearts
This was a slow year for me, I really only played and completed alot of short games. I had some time sinks that took up alot of time like Fall guys and Star Wars Battlefront. Next year I am looking to get back to more RPG's and single player experiences.

I don't feel like I've had any particular low points. I'm not including the free itch.io games I've played because it doesn't feel like a fair comparison.
High points include:
Disco Elysium: I started it in 2021 but finished it this year then finished it a second time. It's just really good and was a game I kept kind of glossing over not figuring it'd really be for me. Big oops.
TOEM: Just a cute and really comfy time. There's a free update with a new area I still need to play
Return to Monkey Island: Best surprise of the year. I had kind of given up on a new entry to the series then got one great one from Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman themselves.
Persona 4 Golden: My first Persona and I had a great time. Now I'm interested in more of the series.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana would have likely made it here if I was finished it yet, but I still have a long ways to go... What I've played is a highlight.

I couldn't agree more on Horizon: Forbidden West. I really enjoyed the first game but they did nothing interesting to iterate on the franchise. I found the main plot to be relatively interesting but I couldn't care less about any of the tribes and their drama surrounding the whole thing. I honestly don't want any more titles from Horizon. I'd much rather they create a new IP or go back to Killzone.

I disagree strongly with both of you but also can't be bothered with trying to convince you otherwise *shrug*

Technically I've beaten 9 games but really it's 8 because 1 completion was on 2022-01-02.
The best game I completed was Disco Elysium. Fantastic story and protagonist. The best game I played was Elden Ring. Had to retire it because I'm too bad a player to get through it but this is an absolutely awesome game. Nothing else drew me in like Elden Ring.
I didn't finish any bad games. In general I again played many games for a short time and then grew bored and retired them. Out of my completions the worst game was Higurashi - When they Cry: Chapter 6 - Tsumihoroboshi. I gave it a 3.5/5.
I'm really looking forward to these kind of threads (and videos from gaming channels on YouTube) that look back at 2022. I feel like this year has been so incredibly boring gaming-wise (very few good releases besides 2,3 exceptional ones) that I'm desperate for any interesting gaming videos/content. I talked about it with a friend and he was of completely different opinion. He thought it was a strong year. The only release this year that had me hyped up was Elden Ring. First few channels have put online their top 20/top 10 lists and my god there's a lot of okayish titles on there. I wonder if these games would have made a top 20 list in any other year. The video I have on my mind here is the top 20 by 4players (German).

Hrm, I don't really have a favorite(s) per se, but if I had to choose....
- The Xenoblade completions (2, X, 3, DE): I enjoy the Xeno franchise as a whole and playing/completing each one was enjoyable. I had fun playing all of them and have every intention of replays for each one (minus DE).
- Othercide: Finally beat the last boss and god damn did it feel good.
Those are probably my biggest highlights. Now in terms of my downs....
- Lost In Random: I've already ranted about this, so I'll spare everyone.
- Bravely Default: Just completed this, but boy what a let down after Chapter 4. It's just a boss rush with story bits tacked on and a few lore dumps. Personally it just feels rushed and underdeveloped. A shame since this was a game that sat for so long waiting for me to complete it. Oh well, I guess.
Overall my year was great for gaming, especially here at the end where I completely shifted gears with my mind.

Favourites
- Half Life 2. Had it in my library for a while and never played it. I played it with MMOD and had a great time!
- MGSV: TPP. Bought it since I enjoyed MGR and thought it would be fun. Fell in love with it and ended up 100 Percenting it.
- God Of War (2018). I had been wanting to buy it for about 3 years now and when I visited America they were selling it for about 5$ so I bought it. The world looks amazing and the story was beautiful!
Least Favourites
- MW2 (2022). Really enjoyed MW2019s campaign, so I bought MW2 hoping it would be like the previous campaign. However, the characters were boring and the gameplay was extremely bland.
- Borderlands 3. After playing Borderlands 2 I hoped Borderlands 3 Would expand on Borderlands 2 with new mechanics and characters. But I was wrong since the dialogue is annoying and unfunny, the combat didn't feel like borderlands and the weapons felt like water guns.

This year I've played so many games. If I had to choose the top 3 I personally enjoyed most, it would be:
3. Pokémon Legends - Arceus. New gameplay, I've always prefered collecting more than fighting, so it's the perfect game for me.
2. Hollow Knight. What to say about it? One of the best metroidvanias/indie games of the history.
1. Bloodborne. My first completed Souls. Struggled with it, but really enjoyed.
If I look at my completions list, I can't see any game that I didn't enjoyed, but if I had to choose, they would be:
- Limbo [Replay]. First time I felt it better.
- Star Wars: Lethal Alliance. One of the worst Star Wars games.
- Fifa 22. Worse than previous ones.
To find games that I didn't enjoy, I had to look in my retired list:
- Dirt 5. Too arcade for me.
- Dragon Ball Z: Goku Densetsu. Frustrating luck dependent game.
- Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon. Much worse than the two previous + crashed and lost much progress.

I've had quite a few completions this year. How about that? My backlog is now flirting with 300 but it's still nice to see that I cleared some titles.
Favorite completions:
- The Legendary Starfy (Densetsu no Stafy) - This is the very first Starfy from Japan, (not the "first" from the USA). A cute platformer! It has a lot of charm and I wish Nintendo would bring the rest of the series to the USA. For not being a complete fan translation, it's pretty good.
- Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion - So many puns and references. It was shorter than I thought it would be but because it made me laugh I can forgive it.
- Spyro Reignited - I really was surprised to see how much of a faithful remaster this was. The voice acting threw me off at times since my ears were so trained by the originals, but other than that I personally didn't see anything to complain about.
- Astro's Playroom - It's something that this is a free game; it makes me wish that I could play its predecessor. I don't see games of this genre prioritized anymore and it's sad since these are still fun. Enjoyable gameplay, great graphics, and I had a good time collecting everything.
- VVVVVV - I knew going in that this was supposed to be a difficult game but other than a spot here and there where I got stuck, this did not turn into a rage game. Who knew I could get so concerned for characters that are almost featureless? Great soundtrack.
- Minit - I had decided that I would never play this since it's almost like a required speedrun, but a freebie's a freebie! I'd say it was designed pretty well. There was a point where I got stuck and I thought I'd messed up the playthrough, but I found out that the developers must have anticipated the point I was in and made a "backup" route to continue. Thank you developers, for your soft locking concerns.
- Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Genuinely thought I would not finish this due to the design choices. It's a good game if you have a little patience to see it through. I admit my time was easier since I was using a guide (I would have never found all of those fairies otherwise) but it's worth playing because there are some unique things about this game. I also regard it fondly because between my sister and my friend, I was the only one who actually finished it. 😆

DRAWN TO LIFE: TWO REALMS.
Why did I make myself finish this? Sometimes I still don't know. I loved the first two. Something went wrong with this third one. I do not play Mario Maker, thus was quite irritated that each section (of which there were many) required you to do consecutive levels of Mario Maker in which you are required to figure out how to set up the right combination of bull crap that you will then be made to suffer through to complete the level. In some levels there wasn't even any point... grab the objects, stuff them into a corner, start the level walk to the end door. Boom. Done. I actually hate writing bad game reviews because I know that a lot of work was still put into making them, but...
Why.
Never deleted a game so fast after completion, which is saying something because I tend to leave them there.
Not this time. NO.

Best (Games I rated 90% or more)
100% - Half-Life - replay but even with all the nostalgia I think it holds up to this day
100% - Half-Life: Opposing Force - Just more Half-Life and despite it being considered non-canon, it still feels like it could be part of the universe.
90% - The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe - Hard to imagine this started as a rather goofy little Half Life 2 mod, but how they've managed to factor in the Ultra Deluxe content was interesting and engaging.
90% - Titanfall 2 - What a game. The pacing, the flow, the characters and story. It's an absolute masterclass in game design.
90% - It Takes Two - A well deserved award winner. Lots of imagination, variety and makes for a fantastic coop experience.
90% - Black Mesa - It takes a special quality of a game to not only match a classic but manage to surpass it in some ways. I honestly think this could have been a perfect game if the Xen levels weren't as arduous as they were. Still amazing but they go on for just way too long.
90% - Dark Savior - Fascinating game. Isometric RPG with simplistic fighting game battles and a capture mechanic so you can make enemies fight for you. And it has like 4 different endings or something. Mindblowing for a game that seems so basic on the surface.
90% - Deep Fear - I just loved this game. It's got those old low budget qualities to it like the bad voice acting, but it gives the game so much charm and there's so much attention to detail and general intrigue and weirdness that I had a blast playing through it.
Worst (games rated 50% or less)
50% - Counter-Strike: Condition Zero - Deleted Scenes - Just a bunch of random maps with awful bot A.I. Really tedious and annoying
50% - Chime Sharp - Music game that doesn't really have anything to do with the music. Track selection is weak and gameplay feels somewhat less interesting than the original game.
50% - Crayon Physics Deluxe - Nice idea but execution is lacking. It's really janky and you basically just resort to the same kinds of strategies each time or have to construct some ridiculous, unintuitive contraptions for the impossible stuff.
50% - Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood - Really boring and exceptionally tedious with the DS touch controls. Combat is ruined by this alone and they apparently gave up development half way through and it shows.
50% - Ghostbusters (2016) - Really, really boring. All the levels are basically the same with a slightly different art style.
50% - Heavy Rain - Was kinda interesting but there's just so much immersion breaking issues. Uncanny Valley characters, weird controls etc. A story hilariously plotholed.
40% - Racer 8 - really simplistic little puzzle game but they made it as annoying as possible. Limited camera controls, lack of variety, a bunch of bugs and stuff like tiles changing right under your car so you have no time to react etc.
40% - Glittermitten Grove - a front hiding the true game Frog Fractions 2. Sad part is neither Glittermitten Grove or Frog Fractions 2 is any fun. Glittermitten Grove is just a really boring town management thing with elves and no real intrigue. Frog Fractions 2 is an ASCII RPG like days of old, but played so straight that it's practically impenetrable and very frustrating at times.
40% - Spore - Absolute waste of potential. 5 different "game styles" all of them are shallow and tedious.
30% - Sonic and the Secret Rings - Unbelievably awful. Controls absolute destroy any potential this game could have had, and I've read that it gets better the more you skill up etc. the prospects of doing that feel like insanity.
100% - Half-Life - replay but even with all the nostalgia I think it holds up to this day

They screwed up the soundtrack on PS2 / PC versions, it's literally MIDI earrape all the way through (which is a shame since the OST isn't half-bad from what I've heard on YT). The writing and voice acting are bottom-of-the-barrel quality, which could have been a good thing if it was so-bad-it's-good like Resident Evil '96, text documents are straight up highlighting the solution to each puzzle (I'd be fine with that if there was an easy mode that enables this type of hand-holding, but there's only one default mode), you can't really plan ahead or manage your resources properly, given how enemies can spawn randomly just about anywhere and for some reason, you can't interact with the environment during sprinting so if you wanted to scan a room while dodging everything in it, you'd inevitably get hurt anyway. The monster design was lacking and so were the boss battles (the library bat-like boss could softlock you if the wrong weapons were used and softlock me he did lol), the final gauntlet hands you like 3 new weapons for a less than 10-minute long section which is super odd (only one of these toys is actually useful) and it all ends on an unresolved sequelbait ending just to top it off nicely. Perhaps the Dreamcast / PS1 ports were slightly more enjoyable, but I can't be asked to try them due to some of the core mechanics ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Been a mixed year in terms of just the quality of games I played, but I do have some standouts that I really enjoyed.
Prey (2006) was easily probably my favorite game of the year. Now that I think about it I loved the game so much and overall I have never really played anything else like it. Technologically groundbreaking for it's time, all the weapons feel original, unique and different, the graphics are incredible and exploring The Sphere was just tons of fun to do and the spirit form stuff had tons of great puzzles plus the addition of portals with no load times is insane. This is a year before Portal came out and it's incredible. The only thing I don't like is the main character. He is super selfish and only has one goal in mind throughout the entire game and when that fails he just out of nowhere decides to finally become the chosen one or whatever. He is seriously unlikeable and the writing for him is inconsistent throughout. Overall, probably the game that stuck out most to me this year.
Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem was also awesome. My feels might die down a bit on a replay but overall as a huge fan of the series I loved what they did with it. The Multiverse Aspect from Serious Sam 4 pops up at the end giving us unlimited potential for how this series can continue and the game again humanizes Sam as a person which makes for some amazing moments throughout the game that make him just SOOO likeable. The addition of new weapons was fun although I found myself disliking the main Russian Character A LOT in this game. The Cameo from One Eyed Olga was amazing and a great payoff to those who payed attention to the radio broadcasts in SS4. Yeah, it's more Serious Sam and I loved it. First impressions was that it was my favorite Sam game to date, but we'll see how my feelings are on a replay.
Prodeus also finally got released fully and I loved it as well. Not only does it have a great campaign with some excellent level design and amazing graphics but the game has a level editor and there's been tons of mods for it ever since it came out in Early Access. This game is gonna live on for a long time thanks to thank. Despite the disappointing "Sequel Maybe?" abrupt ending, I think this is my Favorite Boomer Shooter since DUSK.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) was also really fun. As a fan of the Modern Warfare games of the past it was so fun to see Captain Price and a gang of new really enjoyable protagonists in action. The callbacks really got me squealing with joy and the cameos from other characters throughout was just great especially during the post credits scene. Voice acting is superb, graphics are outstanding, sound design is incredible, gameplay is really fun and varied, protagonists are really likeable and the story is really good I beat it in two sittings and while it does have issues on the technical side it's still a great game nonetheless.
Those are just some of my favorites I played this year. As for the lesser games, there was plenty more than last year surprisingly. Games like Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force, Soldier of Fortune, Call of Duty, Turbo Overkill's Early Access Build and Rage all had disappointing aspects to them but none were as bad as Chex Quest HD, a shoddy, insane cakewalk of an Unreal Engine 4 Remake that had jank graphics, boring gameplay, no challenge and the worst AI I have ever seen in a video game.
Thankfully, the last few months have been quite strong for my completions in terms of quality. I beat 25 Games this year but next year I'm planning to play some more ambitious games like Ghost of Tshusima, finish Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning and try other games like Solasta: Crown of the Magister (which added Dragonborns recently as DLC! YAY!), Far Cry 2 or 3, God of War (2005), Dishonored, continue the Yakuza series finally and maybe play Deus Ex. I'm playing through Biomutant and I hope to play more bigger games next year.

Did you see the Game Boy Color version? 😅
This might possibly explain why I had a better experience, since I played the PS1 version. Maybe it's because I haven't played a lot of survival horror yet but the monster designs didn't bother me. The library boss did annoy me though. It sounds like you might have only did Carnby's side? Aline's side is a little different, so if you ever get the impulse to take a crack at it again you can see if her side of things improves your experience. I do acknowledge the technical things here and there can use some improvement, but all in all I still liked it. Thanks for indulging my curiosity!

Sonic Frontiers:- The story and gameplay were similar to what you usually see in a Sonic game, but it was the fact you could free roam around to your next objective that really got me. It reminded me of the hub towns in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Adventure and I loved that about it. The soundtrack was also fire.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge:- A fun beat-em-up that you can play alone, co-op or online and I like that it gives you all all those options along with playing as each of the turtles and how they have their own fighting styles. Mikey just clicked with me.
Not Worst Just Meh
AI: Somnium Files: Nirvana Initiative:- I loved the first game where you didn’t know who the serial killer was it drops a huge twist on you near the end of the game while dropping clues through tree branch system. I liked that. However this game made that so much more convoluted by making the tree branch system instead be alternative endings, but a past and future side. If I replayed the game I’d probably get it, but I understood the first game’s confusing story the first time without needing a replay. Why should this one need one too?
Those are all the games I’ve pretty much completed this year. I did replay a few like the Danganronpa games, but replays don’t really count to me.

Welllllllll....everyone's entitled to an opinion :) From the people I've spoken to (here and elsewhere), Forbidden West seems to have been highly divisive. Seems to be either you really like it or you don't!

Some awesome choices here, I'd forgotten about It Takes Two - played it through with my wife and it was one of our favourite coop experiences this year. One day I'm going to get round to the storyline for Titanfall 2, it's been on my 'to do' list for a long, long time!

Looking back at the ratings I gave for every game I completed this year. My least favourite completion has to be Super Mario Bros. I gave it a 3/10
I'll just give a shorter version of what I said in my normal review of the game. The worst part of the game is the controls. I didn't think they'd be that bad when I started playing but they are BAD. They are way too slippery and there is no midair control. Oh yeah, and spring physics is the worst in this game. There is no consistency on whether you'll get the big jump or the small jump.
Most favourite completion has a lot of tough options. It's between Teardown and Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.
Teardown is such a unique game due to its destruction physics. It's the kind of game I've always wanted in my childhood, where everything was destructible. Setting up the heists and pulling them off is really fun.
Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is the best game in a series I already love to death. Because it is essentially one game split into two, it tells a coherent and immersive story with so much character growth. The plot twists and reveals are amazing and this game has my favourite breakdown in the entire series.
But I'd have to give my "Completion of the Year" to Great Ace Chronicles because of just how much it improves on the Ace Attorney formula and how much it exceeds every other game in the series.

I've completed lots of games this year and I will probably be completing 1 or 2 more. There were a couple of games this year I rated a 10/10 and a few I rated 1/10. They will be in the associated list for me.

Favorite: Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator (PC)
Brilliant mix of bizarre, dark humor with fast paced, but easy to learn gameplay mechanics and a one-of-a-kind soundtrack experience that only ever comes around once in a blue moon. Having multiple endings and free content updates helps too!
Least Favorite: Chickens on the Road (Switch)
While the years not over yet I'm about 95-99% certain I won't find a game more meaningless to experience at this rate. It was at least cheap ($1), but when so many other experiences in the indie and middle-market scene are able to create better experiences for cheap or free (Ex. Vampire Survivors, Lily's Well, etc.) it's hardly an excuse to release something this barebones in terms of challenge and overall quality of execution.

Last few from me.
Triangle Strategy - I took a while to get into this game, but when I did I fell in love with it. The storyline was really intriguing with a good cast of characters and I always love a bit of tactical combat.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land - My first Kirby game, and it won't be my last. It was a fun adventure, very good looking for the Switch and a great game to chill out to.
Beacon Pines - Game Pass has been amazing for me this year, without it I would never have come across some of my favourite games from the year, Beacon Pines among it. A 'choose your own adventure' with an interesting plot and wonderful characters, it was the perfect length and I really enjoyed my time with it.
