I know a lot of people that are achievement hunters and they go for the 100% (or nearly 100%, since not all games require the full % achieved to get all the achievement or trophies) and they don't care about the game, genre, platform... they just go collecting this in every game they buy. In my case, I feel like I take my time to complete only the games I enjoy the most but for the rest, I usually only do the main story and maybe some extras that I find interesting, but the games I go for 100% are the exception.
What do you do? :)

I'm a completionist. I pretty much always try to 100% the game. If I feel that it's not 'respecting my time', I give up on completing and just finish the main story (but that never feels good).
The bad thing about being a completionist is that some games are more balanced towards the main story only, so in an RPG is easy to get overpowered after all the experience gained doing side stuff.

It depends.
There will be some video games that I do not particularly care for, so I won't particularly go for extras if I can avoid it. Examples for me would be much older games and games that I don't particularly like but will complete anyway due to my stubbornness of trying to beat every game I own.
There will be other games that I might try to do everything I can in but end up not either due to difficulty or feel as though I obtained as much I can. Hollow Knight is one I feel that will always escape my grasp due to the difficulty of its last pantheon...
Then there are those games that I'm successful at 100%ing. I suppose these are usually easier and don't have as many arduous tasks in comparison to the games that I wasn't able to do 100% of everything. There's only a few of these, most being Lego games and platformers since I'm usually pretty decent and patient with these types.

Unless I’m really enjoying a game I don’t care to 100% it. Hell, if I’m not enjoying a game I don’t care to even complete the story. At this point I’m burnt out with most games and only really play what I like or what looks interesting.

I'm a completionist most often when it comes to short games, and games in genres I am especially fond of. I'll go for 100% in an 8 hour platformer, but in a 30-80 hour western RPG those side quests can fuck right off. I've gone for 100% in some Dragon Quest games though, so it's really a case by case basis. It helps in Dragon Quest's case that the sidequests are often built really well into the main progression and as such don't take away from the game's overall pacing.

Absolutely not a completionist. I play a lot of jrpgs and generally do most or even every sidequest I find, but I certainly don't try to maximize things or find all the treasure or fill bestiaries or do every difficulty level or what-have-you, and I've never gotten all the trophies/achievments for one (damn close in Trails in the Sky SC... actually do hope to 100% that one next time since I am only two off and they should be doable. If I fail again oh well).
There is a very small number of games I've gotten all the achievements on and they are mostly small and generally easy enough to do.
There are too many trophies that just look boring, arduous, or too frustrating to do for me, even if I otherwise love the game, so why put myself through that for what's just a number to me. It's not going to give me that satisfaction.

I like to tick boxes but I'm not a completionist. If I know about a side quest or collectable I'll try to do it/collect it. I don't actively look for them, unless games make it easy for me to do so.
Luigi's Mansion 3 for example tells you the approximate location for gems. That, I like. I will probably still not 100% it though, but I'm taking extra time to search for them at the moment.
When I've had enough of the game, I'll finish the main story and move on. 100% is never my goal when I start a game.

Pretty much the same mentality. I always try to do as much of the content as I can, but if certain objectives are just arbitrary 'do something X amount of times' then forget it.
For games like Final Fantasy 7/8/9 I did most of the fun optional content, but skipped the super bosses as it meant having to grind for countless additional hours.

I'm someone who very much values a game not overstaying its welcome. There are only a few games I actually 100% completed and they are usually all games that I either really loved or where completing it 100% was easily done.
Most of the time I neither have the patience nor the interest in going for every little thing.
I don't care about fluffing up my casual playthrough with unnecessary busywork when I'd rather move forward and progress in the story or campaign.

I am very much a completionist, so much that I usually end up trying to do everything I can even on my first playthrough without even specifically aiming for it. RPGs are especially good at bringing out this side of me because my brain sees the countless ways you can play the game and has a field day.

I'm absolutely not a completionist. I'll usually do as much side stuff as I want, and then once I start getting bored with the side stuff I'll try to beat the game. Sometimes this does mean that I'll complete pretty much everything in the game, because I'm enjoying it so much, but I'm not going to play something past the point of enjoyment, particularly not just to get some more achievements or stuff like that.
But I'm generally speaking someone who think that a lot of games are longer than they should be to begin with. Quite a lot of games feel padded and I don't want to add more to the padding.

I'm not a completionist. I like having different experiences, so the more time I spend on a game that I already finished, it means I'll have less time to try new games. I do go for 100% if a game is a 10/10 and it's a reasonable platinum trophy, tho.

I pretty much skip everything optional these days, unless it’s a short game that I’m particularly enjoying. Though looking at my ballooning ‘Retired’ list, I seem to skip a large chunk of non-optional stuff too!
When it comes to achievements and trophies, I really don’t bother, though have starting trying to get them when playing on my new Xbox to get any related Microsoft Reward points.
I guess I’m a bit jaded when it comes to gaming these days. About the only thing I find any joy in and try to complete are short cute indie games...
I’ve really enjoyed such stuff I’ve tried on Xbox GamePass the past few months, all things I probably wouldn’t ever consider, including Carto, Donut County, The Touryst, Rain On Your Parade, Phogs! etc.
Knights & Bikes is the absolute BESTEST though!

It really depends. I don't normally go into a game looking for 100% completion, but I make my decision around half ways into it. I've gotten 11 platinum trophies on my playstation account and I've gotten 100% completion on every single Mario game I've played over the last 4 years. I do love trophy hunting to a degree just for the little dopamine boost with each little ding and trophy card. Completion really depends on what the criteria is though. Repeat playthroughs and hardcore grinding are almost always deal breakers for me. I also don't really go for completion on games with a ton of missable trophies as that can lead to an overly stressful experience that can ruin a fantastic game for me. I mostly just play games for the fun of it and that's really what I will continue doing. There are so many games out there to play, why waste all your time trying to farm out 100 completion on most games.

I like to go after every bloody thing there is to unlock in a game, unless it's either so obscure and unknown that no one even thought of making a guide OR it's too frustrating to go beyond one ordinary playthrough. Also, some of the harder games with inhuman 100% requirements, depending on the genre, may fall back on my priority list because of how much a timesink they become, really slowing me down on my backlog hunt. It's a good time to not be a huge fan of JRPGs :')

Happens to me a lot. When I overlevel due to side quest, I kill final bosses so easy it's not even enjoyable (and I enjoy hard modes and hard games a lot).

I generally like to do as many side quests as I can, but I rarely ever go for 100%. If my backlog wasn’t so large I feel like I would be a bit more of a completionist and go for Platinum trophies more.

My approach to this changed over time. I used to 100% games when I had fewer titles to work with (we’re looking at pre-trophy era here). I also had more time to spend on them. Later on I settled comfortably in main+extra. I only do the extra stuff I’m interested in, even more so if it’s ending related. If it’s a short game I’m more likely to get the extras, but still only if I’m interested. Getting the achievements/trophies never interested me. With the amount of what I have to play, it’s better for me this way than doing a lot of filler I didn’t get much out of overall.

Depends, of course. In Ori, I enjoyed it and exploring enough to go 100%. In the God of War reboot, I largely ignored them because 100%ing would have been a drag. In the good God of War games, I went for extras because I enjoyed it, but also didn't stress too much about missing any.

Depends on the game for me. I'm a completionist at heart but if the game has a really high requirement for getting 100% (looking at you, Cuphead) I either put it off in favor of getting some other games finished or just skip it entirely and write it off as just being a time waste. That being said, I've been doing 100% in less games recently just because I'm trying to get through games rather than taking extra steps to 100% them all. But the ones I haven't done 100% on are on a replay list for me to come back to, hopefully when my backlog is finally empty or at least smaller.

10 Yrs♥✓#
As long as the requirements are reasonable, I will go for 100% completion. I won't grind for items that have a 0.01% chance of dropping, I won't do hard modes, and apparently, I won't fight Metatron for 15 hours to max out the bond skills in Persona 5 Strikers.

*Erhm* Depends on the game. If I like it a lot, YES! But if I'm just muling along (Like it's not fun),
or it's, unfortunately, a game between/before a most anticipated title comes out. Then- I'd finish up as soon as I can.
Generally though. I just play the Main - Storyline on the First Playthrough. And If I liked it. Then...
On the next Playthrough I would 100% It. or the equivalent of seeing all there is to see.
Rarely would I be a Completionist on the first Playthrough. But some games like The Witcher 3 and now recently Ghosts of Tsushima, will make me do that. But mostly, I'm just a casual gamer. So I don't feel the need to unless I'm fanboying hard.
(Oh yeah, and If the achievements are doable too, I really don't want to shoot a gun at a Fucking duck for 20 minutes again, Damn you Fallout 4)

It's not the JRPGs you should be glad about, it's the grand strategy games. Let's just say that I'm not so sure about the completionist time of 165h for Total War: Rome II. It's more like 700h just to get all the achievements required to beat the game with every faction.

9 games out of 10, I'm just doing the minimum required to beat the main story. That's not to say I don't like the games I'm playing, I just have SO MANY games I want to play in my backlog, and I want to experience them all! There are definitely times when a game grabs my attention enough that I'll do the extras, or even 100% it / replay it (I'm looking at you, dark souls)... but it's rare :)
