+Game holds up pretty well and has a lot of innovative features that would return in future games

-Combat can be a little annoying at times since you cant attack at a diagonal and the dungeons become repetitive mostly changing color and adding more enemies and traps
-Certain items are very obscure and difficult to find naturally even a couple needed for progression, however I understand that is how games were back then

For the time period and the constraints of the SNES: It doesn't get any better than Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. (Well, wait, Chrono Trigger and some others roll in at a tie. None of them really beats out the others though.) I honestly think they made a perfect game. Lots of interesting environment interactions, plenty of little secrets, lots of character heart (npcs and Link), tons of fun items to use, and the dungeons.... shooooweeee. The dungeons in this game are epic. The devs went above and beyond with dungeon design. One homerun after another. This game just feels good. They did a really good job with it. Well done LoZ devs if you ever read this. You did a really good job. 10/10

A timeless classic.

Good
- The animations and overall graphics detail is amazing
- the world is immense for SNES game.
- dungeon design is very impressive. Puzzles are deep and reasonably challenging.
- controls are crisp. Upgrades are cool and fun to use.

Bad
- the sword hitbox doesn't exactly match the animation.
- moon pearl, a required item should not be missable, but it is. I was going in circles wondering where to find it. Turned out to be in a chest in a previous dungeon.
- the game doesn't tell me that there are other ways to enter the dark world after beating the dark palace. This causes me to try and enter through the mountain pad entrance and try and find a way off the mountain, which was not possible
- swamp palace. How am I supposed to know I'm supposed to randomly walk into a waterfall? 6 waterfalls that look identical. I'm supposed to walk through
- I wish locked doors would be marked. And chests would be marked.
- no hints were given that i had to use the fire rod to burn the entrance of the dark temple. The skull shows no indication that it could be burned.
- Titan's mitts is missable in gargoyle palace, which is required to get into ice palace. Meaning I was completely stuck not knowing what I needed, until I refer to a guide.
- game forces player to explore every nook and cranny to get potentially required items
- quake medallion is required to reach final dungeon but it's missable. And I have to somehow know the order to hit the pikes to open the warp to dark world for last dungeon.
- the game forces you to explore and do random quests to acquire required upgrades like silver Arrow to beat Ganon. I don't like how these important things are missable.
- no price tag for super bomb. How am I supposed to know how much rupees to collect?

Alongside ICO, this is one of the “muses” of video games that developers often cite as a large source of inspiration for their games, and with good reason. The influence of this game can still be felt many years later throughout the games industry, and there’s still fun to be had exploring this iteration of Hyrule.

When I first played A Link to the Past in 2017 on my SNES Classic, I enjoyed what I played, but I found myself preferring its sequel, A Link Between Worlds on Nintendo 3DS, a little bit more. Nearly seven years later, I decided to replay the game given that its remake on GBA was made available via Nintendo Switch Online's expansion pass last month, to determine if my opinions on the game have changed. Spoilers for the review: they have not.

Don't get me wrong, this is still a fantastic game at the end of the day. It defined the core gameplay structure of The Legend of Zelda series for the next two decades, and I believe none of it has aged poorly. However, on the basis on personal opinion, I still prefer A Link Between Worlds. They're both very similar gameplay wise, but they do differ structurally. I think what disappointed me the most when playing through A Link to the Past were the dungeons. With the exception of a few dungeons towards the end of the game, they all look visually identical, and there is zero variety in music between them all. Furthermore, I just found myself to be simply progressing from one dungeon to another during the majority of second-half of the story, with little to do in between. Of course, this may have been a consequence of me not completing the game to 100%, but playing through the main story in 12 hours just didn't provide me the opportunity to engage with this iteration of Hyrule. Still, as mentioned before, the game's many positives really shine through to make it one of the SNES' all time greats. Personally though, I see no reason to revisit this game in a world where ALBW exists to tell a similar story in the same Hyrule.

Not much of a retro gamer, and I didn't find this one too much fun, as it was kinda boring to me. I know at the time it was definitely a banger, but I'm not a huge fan of it. It plays out how'd you'd expect it to, and never caught my interest too much. The dungeons were a good size, as they were not-too-enormous to give me a headache.
One thing that really bugged me in the game was how you needed random items at random times to progress in the story. For example, you need the Ice Rod to defeat one of the bosses, but you don't find out until the boss fight, and the item is just in some random cave in the map without it telling you anything. It happened a lot, and was super annoying.
This game was tiresome for me, and didn't click all too well. I don't know why some consider it one of the best games of all time. At the time I'm sure it was really great, but now it just isn't too exciting. It holds up well in terms of gameplay and graphics, but I'd rather play a newer Zelda game.

Doesn't enjoy the game to the same extent as many others, but I still really enjoyed playing it. Fun overworld and dungeon exploring. The items are good as well. Being able to switch between two completely different worlds is also a fantastic feature. I think some traps and enemies in dungeons can be pretty bullshit, but expect from that the game delivers.

I know this game is good and introduces so much to the Legend of Zelda franchise, but I find the combat so disheartening. Lack of IFrames and knockback when you get hit, as well as getting kicked all the way back to particular parts of the map makes going through A Link to the Past frustrating. While it has a good amount of content on its bones and has interesting puzzles and music, it just isn't clicking with me like later titles do.

I've tried to play through this game countless times over the years and genuinely don't understand the high praise for it. The music and art direction is top-notch -- as to be expected from a Zelda game -- and this gives the game an excellent atmosphere.

However, this immersion is constantly interrupted by some of the worst combat and hit detection in the series, not to mention some absolutely terrible enemies/bosses and level design within the Dark World portions of the game (a major "FUCK YOU" to Mothula in particular). It's a shame too because the game is very enjoyable until the Dark World gets introduced, which is when the quality starts to fluctuate.

A Link Between Worlds is so much better and renders this game obsolete.

Just like the first "The Legend of Zelda" from NES, but with graphic, gameplay and music enhanced.

I've used a guide to get some of the extras before finish the game, and yet the last battle was hard. It is a fantastic game!

The only problem I have, not just with this game but with the entire franchise, is the lack of instructions on how to follow the story, however, normally when I feel lost I use a guide and move on, but I understand that is the idea of the game to make the player explore everything possible to, not only continue with the story, but also look for extras, such as more hearts or improvements to weapons, armor and items in general.

I grew up on late SNES games, so I never understood the hype of this early SNES Zelda with non pre-rendered graphics. I really enjoyed Link's Awakening and all the other retro Zelda, but something about ALttP, I just don't like. I think the bosses, and dungeons are a disappointment.

I tried to beat this several times, but just got bored. Not really interested in the dark world mechanic. Eventually I finally forced myself to beat it, just so I could say that I beat every Zelda.

Still Zelda, still better than Phantom Hourglass or Triforce Heroes, but....probably the worst main Zelda not on a DS

A Link Between Worlds, that's a good Zelda. I'm not so sure why I don't like ALttP specifically. I even own the manga and enjoyed that.

It's a beautiful game with a focus on exploring. Running around talking to people and finding secrets still feels fun decades after it's original release. The only complaints I have are minor, like some of the puzzles are kind of based in moon logic and sometimes you will take a bad hit because an enemy will jump but that's still considered the same space your one. Other than that, this game is a masterpiece and a must play for anyone.

LoZ: A Link to the Past
• First time playing
• At this point, I have played Legend of Zelda (1987), LoZ: Ocarina of Time and I have put 300 hours into LoZ: Breath of the Wild
• I’m impressed with the opening; an Evil Wizard possess all the soldiers in Hyrule and Zelda is imprisoned in her own castle. Link’s uncle tries to save her and fails, giving Link his own sword and shield. He then rescues Zelda right at the start and takes her to a Sanctuary
• This means that our expectations are somewhat subverted by having us save the princess right at the start, compared to the first game where we trying to save the princess throughout the whole game
• It also sets up that the threat to the player is ever present by establishing the Wizard’s control over the soldiers and having said soldiers swarming the map
• Speaking of, the map looks great. It’s very cleanly designed and has enough but not too much detail to see important caves, buildings and waterways
• I feel like it’s important to point this out because pixel art of the time can sometimes make things like this look like a boxy-mesh. Best to give praise when it is due
• Speaking of pixels, the graphics are very classy, having a kind of ageless quality to them. I hardly ever mention graphics in games so you know it’s something special when I bring it up
• Gameplay is a major step up from the original, doing the important job of fleshing out and adding details to previous mechanics while introducing all new ones
• There are a bunch of additions but I’ll mention a few that I like; the charged spin attack feels nice and practical so Link doesn’t have to keep attacking in one direction anymore
• He can also now jump down from ledges, making the world feel more organic by using the terrain to make short cuts
• Also, there’s a pair of shoes Link get after the second dungeon, I believe it called the desert palace, that let him run really damn fast
• I got a ton of joy out of theses whenever Link would sprint into a wall and do the bug eyes thing
• Moving on to changes to gameplay, there’s been a lot but my favorite has to be to the secrets and hidden items
• They don’t seem to be quite as difficult to find as the original LoZ, and that’s just fine by me
• Don’t get me wrong, some things still feel like you can only find them with psychic powers, or more realistically with a Nintendo Power magazine subscription or a collect call to a Nintendo Help line (hint hint)
• Okay, I kid little bit. If anything, it’s supposed to emulate that “spirit of adventure” and gives you a reason to explore
• But like, come on. I could’ve played this game till story end and had never known that you could find another bottle from some hobo under a bridge if I hadn’t looked it up
• Anyway, let’s move on to the real meat of the game; the dungeons
• There’s a lot of smart design choices that are subtly teaching the player how to navigate the levels
• This shouldn’t be surprising AT ALL because this is one of the franchises that basically pioneered this design philosophy, but it’s praise worthy regardless
• There’s too many to recount in full, but my favorite has to be when they arrange floor tiles into arrows to show you where to go. It’s one of those things you might not notice at first but when you do, it looks silly but in a fun way
• So while this is all well and good, the dungeons to me felt more like “business as usual”
• That is until the just before the third dungeon when the story comes back in and the “Dark World” is introduced
• The “Dark World” is, what else, an evil dimension version of Hyrule and the Evil Wizard wants to open a portal to it
• The how’s and why’s are unimportant at the moment and I’m willing to accept that for the time being
• What is important is that when Link goes to the “Dark World” for the first time, he turns into the Rabbit from “Five Nights at Freddy’s.”
• Apparently, people can’t keep their human form in the Dark World. Remember this for later
• Link gets an item in the very next dungeon that negates this rule, which is a shame. He was basically defenseless as the FNaF Rabbit so it would’ve been cool to work in some kind of evasion style puzzle later. Oh welp.
• Now hold on, cause I’m gonna “rapid fire” some plot points at you because I need to explain my next opinion
• Right after getting the Master Sword, Zelda telepathically calls out to Link mid-kidnapping and he has to save her from the Evil Wizard again. So, expectation back on track, I guess
• After another dungeon, Link fights the Evil Wizard and beats (kills) him. This is strange to me because this is the big bad; the real mover and shaker in the plot, and now he’s gone yet we’re only half-way through the game. The last thing he does is send Link to the Dark World
• Link is then tasked with saving seven maidens. After saving the first maiden, she tells Link that the True Big Bad behind the creation of the Dark World is… Ganon. Oh, the bad guy of the first game? “Somehow, Palpatine has ret

I have only played 3D Zelda’s up to this point, and the series really was not for me. After picking up this as my first 2D Zelda, my sentiment has not changed. The large overworld map granted many places to go in any order you wanted for the main quest, but as for side content, theres very little to do, making most spots on the map feel like set-pieces. The addition of the Dark World was exciting but it still felt like more of the same, just slightly more difficult. The main quest itself was fun, and each new item obtained was exciting…until you find out that most of the time they are just alternate ways to deal damage while spending your magic meter. If they are used for dungeon puzzles, it is usually for one or two puzzles, excluding items actually used for puzzle solving such as the hookshot. While i appreciated the designs of the dungeons, it felt rather tedious. Overall the game really isn't that bad at all, in fact its pretty good especially for the time it was released. I just seriously think the series isn't for me at all.

Probably the most iconic 2D Zelda game.

Good plot with the Dark World being intertwined with the normal realm. I do believe this is one of the first Zelda games with an actual story other than just "save the princess!" and it executed very well.

Agahnim was a great villain at first, it was nice seeing a unique villain. And then it turned out he was Ganon all along, bruh. Why does this series insist on doing stuff like this?

Gameplay in this one was the pinnacle of 2D Zelda, fuck ton of items and gear, which was great. The dungeons in this game were decent, the bosses as well.

It was just a solid overall game. Nothing to really make it stand out, but it did very few things wrong too.
