Incredible game, and probably one of my new favourite SNES titles! Coming off of the original DKC, it’s amazing to see how many QOL additions were made to the gameplay / UI (more collectibles, an added bonus world, more transparency in progression, new level gimmicks). While it of course feels similar to the original, it’s a sequel that expands upon the basic formula in the best possible ways. With the exception of the save system, I’d argue it hasn’t aged a day in the nearly 30 years since its release. Also, everyone talks about Stickerbrush Symphony being this life-changing piece of music (and it totally is, for the record, hearing it in-game for the first time was a surreal experience) … but the rest of the game’s OST is really something else. David Wise was at the top of his game for this one. So many memorable tracks, with so much weight behind them - it’s hard to believe he pulled this off using the SNES sound chip, of all things.

Platforming perfectionGood
- Kept all the amazing things about DKC1 and buffed it up with even more amazing things
- dixie's hair spin added a more dynamic to the platforming without making it overpowered
- A lot of new locations and environments that make it stand out from the first game
- carrying your partner on your back is a neat addition, allowing for creative shortcuts and more place for hidden secrets
- a lot of new enemies and new ways to interact with them, like the beetles, and barrel crocs
- a lot of new level properties, like honey climbing and being stuck in it. The ghost roller coaster.
- the bosses were more creative and fun to fight than DKC1
- it's easier to save as they're accessible more quickly after entering a world
- the game knows how to joke about itself especially when talking to cranky. Love how he breaks the 4th wall.
- the music is even better than the first game. A lot of memorable tracks.
- graphics look insanely good for SNES
- difficulty curve is perfect.
Bad
- nothing

Donkey Kong Country 2 is such a masterpiece. The sprites and beautiful backgrounds still hold up today and create such an atmosphere. The level design is amazing. Nearly every single level is fun to play. The platforming is so satisfying to master. It feels so good to blaze through the game after getting good at it. My favorite part of this game has to be the music though. This is my favorite soundtrack in any game. Every single song is memorable, thoughtful, and beautiful. The music is really what creates the atmosphere, and its incredible that they were able to create it on the super nintendo. I love every single part of this game so incredibly muchUpdated 3 Weeks Ago

This game is what defines a perfect game. The level design is amazing. So many creative ways to traverse everything. It's hard as hell but not impossible. When you die, it's not really because the game is unfair. It has amazing graphics for it's time. I think it still looks great. It has arguably the best video game soundtrack of all time. Amazing all-around. There is nothing wrong with this game.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

Best of the three original DKC, Diddi's Kong Quest looks like a clone at first, but it brought most of the foundations for the series as we know it nowadays. It would be excessive to talk about a 'hidden gem' , but DKC2 deserves much better than being overshadowed by its overly popular predecessor, which it surpasses in almost every way.Updated 5.5 Months Ago

Very much disliked the level towards the end where you had to play as a few of the animal friends you have. Spider stinks.Very good level design overall, loved the wind levels and the ones with the seals both freezing the water and cooling down boiling water.
Loved the bee boss that felt very unique from the rest.
Suck it King K. Rool!

Loved this one to start and by the end the difficulty in trying to 100% complete it wore me down a bit. I think I still wish the camera was a BIT more zoomed out but I adore the soundtrack, the platforming feels good, the final boss battle was great and honestly the others were much improved from DKC 1 in my opinion; fun time for sure. Will I 102% this again in the future? Very unlikely.Updated 8.5 Months Ago

The perfect sequel. Does everything DKC1 did better, added new stuff and so on. You still feel the age of the cold, brutal SNES times back then. "Rare" really wants to push their players to be the best if they want to beat this game. The game is both gameplaywise and graphically amazing to this day and recommendable. You see certain technical limitations causing problems here and there but it doesn't matter as much. One of the best Jump n Runs ever created.Updated 1 Year Ago

Rare at it's peak. Excellent platforming, improves so much on DKC1 with the inclusion of DK Coins and Kremlin coins. Music is phenomenal and the level design is very creative. Areas are unique and provide a sense of wonder. Difficulty gets a big spike around the 5th world, which is when the game gets really great. The only gripe I have is the save system is a little too archaic at this point, requiring you to get 2 coins to save your game. Overall though, an excellent game all around, and one of the best platformers ever made.Updated 1 Year Ago

A textbook sequel. It retains the tight platforming and rewarding learning curve from the first game and pushes the pre-rendered graphics further. We also get possibly the greatest soundtrack of the 16-bit era.In the story Donkey has been captured so Dixie replaces him as a playable character. Her slow fall spin ability along with additional level verticality and mechanics adds a nice amount of gameplay variety that the 1st game lacked.
There's an oddity where some earlier level themes repeat in later worlds a little out of place. But all in all, it’s a superior game to DKC1. More variety and less repetitive, although DKC2 is noticeably more challenging towards the end.
The Donkey Kong Country series is remarkably playable for a 16 bit era platformer.

It's not *bad* but its not as fun and well designed as the first one. Too many boring animal sections, too much pin point pixel perfect precesion platforming, the bee hive levels are horrible and the level where you have to dodge a moving pool of acid while you need to use the snake form's long jump which you need to wait 5 seconds as it RISES SUPER FAST is level design Hall of Shame worthy. I have played enough to know that I ultimately prefer the first game over this. The first game it actually feels like it is possible to move fast and jump without feeling like the game will kick you in the balls for doing so. This game feels it forces you to be absolutely perfect or screw off.Updated 1 Year Ago

I might get some hate for this, but this is actually my least favorite of the SNES Donkey Kong Country games. I think a lot of it comes down to atmosphere. Everything is dark and dirty and creepy. I like the fun and light-hearted beginnings to the other games. That's not to say that there isn't a ton to love here. The game added tons of collectibles, more secret level types, secret worlds, and so many animal friends that you only get to see some of them for just one level. The level gimmicks are more pronounced and get a little harder than the first game. You could easily play each level 3 times trying to get all the collectibles in a level and still enjoy it.Updated 1 Year Ago

Good improvement over the original DKC, but in comparison it's also a lot harder the more you progress, which I didn't really enjoy, so I used "rewind" a lot lol. I also preferred the original since I felt it was better structured thematically (snow world, forest world, etc.). In DKC2 every world has a little of everything. Because of those two things I gave it a 90% score. But overall you can notice this is a more complex game than DKC1 (more secrets, more elaborate bosses, more gameplay mechanics, better level design, a little more narrative), and you can call that a better game. Soundtrack is just as good as the DKC one.Updated 1 Year Ago

Donkey Kong Country was a fantastic, and some would argue revolution, entry to the platforming genre. You won't find many franchises where the sequel was superior in every single way, and yet DKC2 accomplished just that.Graphics are incredible once again and David Wise's composed soundtrack is heavenly--one of the best in video game history. It's the game play, however, that elevates this as the best DK platformer to date (and, in my opinion, the 3rd best platformer of all time). The pacing is spot on, while retaining the difficulty of its predecessor--and in some ways being even more difficult. It is a pretty gradual slope in difficulty and there just aren't any levels that feel out of place. All the levels feel really unique and even ones that use the same tile sets stand out from one another. If I had to pick one bad level it would be Glimmer's Galleon and that mostly has to do with it being both an underwater level and having high darkness/low visibility.
The two Kongs complement each other extremely well and both are well rounded and situations make one the better choice of the other. Dixie Kong can use her hair to glide and cross large gaps easily while Diddy holds barrels in front and is faster at running and climbing.
Replay-ability is also very high. The levels contain loads of secrets of find and there is even an extra set of levels that are unlocked by collecting enough coins. The bonus areas are pretty much always unique additions to that level, unlike DKC1 where there was less variety. They are also much more fairly placed and often there will be small hints somewhere telling where those are, unlike DKC1 where often bonus areas were placed down pits or in the air without any tells and no way to know besides guess work.
All in all, DKC2 is a wonderful game that I've played countless times, and in my opinion Rare's best work.

Holy shit, this is a good game. The level design, with some minor exceptions, felt so much better and fair than the first game's did. The environments constantly shift and change, making no area's theme drag on for too long (although the game could have done with like 1 less of those beehive levels). The bosses are all massively improved. Minus King K. Rool, all of DKC 1's bosses felt like grime scraped of the bottom of a deep fryer. They felt lazy and thrown in as an afterthought. DKC 2's bosses however, all feel like they receive the same level of importance as King K did.
The music to this game is on another level of existence itself. David Wise once again shows why he's a cut above the rest in terms of old school music composition. I recommend everybody who reads this to at least listen to Stickerbrush Symphony at least once. I have never heard anything like it in all my life and don't think I ever will again.
The only thing that keeps this game from being completely perfect in my book are the bonus challenges. The amount of them in this game felt pacebreaking. The reason behind is, in each world, you can spend the tokens you receive from those challenges to get the chance to play one level from the bonus world. While I think the idea is brilliant, the implementation of it unfortunately came at the cost of my immersion in the rest of the game's levels. Eventually I lost interest in trying to pursue a 100% completion and just wanted to enjoy the main game.
All-in-all, this game is an extremely fun platformer and the gold standard for what I've seen done on the SNES yet. The gimmicks don't feel forced nor do they overstay their welcome and the game is also a musical work of art. Hell, I even recommend trying for 100% if you do play it and see how it feels to you, as I know my feelings don't represent everyone else's. Cannot recommend this game enough.

let me say, this isnt a bad game. this is another super, old school hard game. the platforming is good, the level design is articulate and diverse, and there arent the same BS moments as in the first game. I liked this one more. But still, a handful of quality of life things missing that just prevented me from really getting into the flow. A fantastic game that really builds on what the original gave us. Level design is probably the best in the series; combined with a really heartfelt and sometimes haunting soundtrack and incredibly detailed visuals, DKC2 really shines. Collecting all of the coins was definitely a tough challenge, particularly when some of them were hidden in walls that were very difficult to discover. The array of animal friends and cart levels kept the variety high and boss battles were good but not terribly creative. The Lost World had some pretty insane challenges and its design was cumbersome. Great game!Updated 3 Years Ago

This game takes the first game and brings it one step further. It's more difficult (in my opinion) and more diverse as well. The secrets are well hidden and there are a lot of them. This time, the devs were nice enough to give clues all over the game to find passages and secrets. Follow the bananas. They are NEVER there just for fun, they all have a purpose! The music is good and the challenge is there. It took me 19 lives to beat the last boss, so don't give up!Updated 3 Years Ago
