At first, it was hard to have a strong opinion. Illusion Island was obviousy made for children, I mean : really young ones. It didn't feel like a game for me but it was fun to play and I would I have been okay with the idea of it being a nice 'first metroidvania' (no matter how awkward the very idea of a 'metroidvania' where you're never lost and never have to look at the map can sound). I had a few notes for this review and the most severe was : "it would have cost nothing to make the game a little more adult-friendly and create something as engaging for everyone."

But then came the last third of the game and that's when I realized that Illusion Island was simply a very poorly balanced game. Not that it suddently became a soulslike : there's nothing hard in this game. Since the devs chose to focus the difficulty features on characters' health only (although they could have offered something with a little less checkpoints, a little less assistantship... etc.), and since hitbox are so generous than even by playing with an e-cigarette in one hand I couldn't manage to lose my single health point, I can certify this is currently one the easiest backtrackers/platformers on Switch. But still, there are difficulty spikes at some point, and regarding what preceded them, they're not minor ones. To a point where the game can't reach its official target anymore. I actually had a little trigger warning during the first boss fight: it wasn't tough (like I said, nothing here can be called 'tough'), but it was clearly more demanding than the very simplistic platforming until then. I thought a kid wouldn't have been prepared enough by the game itself, then forgot that tought. From the next boss onwards, once again not tough but tedious and longer than some entire areas, I understood: this game was made by people who never heard about difficulty curves. I should have been happy but... nope. First of all, the challenge wasn't enough... challenging (and there were still checkpoints every other room) ; secondly, it happened too late in the game to really feel other than artificial.

So let's recap : way to easy for adult players, probably too hard (at least at some point) for kids ; kind of boring for most part, and somewhat irritating towards the end... so what remains? Side-quests? Sorry, they forgot them. Collectables? Not rewarding like, at all. Level/Game design? Well, if you think a good backtracker is a game where you're next objective is always at the opposite side of your current location, Illusion Island's one of the best of all times but let's be serious : level design here is unnecessarily meandering, rips off Ori, Hollow Knight, Mario and Meat Boy at least ten times each, and is overall extremely linear. Graphics? Yep, fine. Production values, in general, are good. And controls are okay. That's not much. That's not enough in a world full of so-called metroidvanias.

N.B. : I don't want my run time to be misleading, this is a corrupted main + sides. Meaning that, for the first hours, I was doing a 100% run, before changing my mind gradually.

The game does record your exact playtime when you go to select which file to play.
I did play this game Solo and as Donald for my entire playthrough.

The game does a lot of things right. The soundtrack was never boring or annoying. I enjoyed the recent cartoon shows which helped me enjoy the story of the game. The platforming was not too easy or difficult. Lastly, the bosses were done very well. They asked you to use the skills you've been learning up until that point and only threw something new at you when the game knew you could handle it. I'm also very glad they waited until you went to the final area to unlock a big change to how you would play the game. The only thing I'll say about that is to focus on finishing the story before going back for stuff you missed. I guess the 1 downside is having no combat options. You have to avoid all enemies and you still use platforming to damage bosses.

If you are a fan of the recent cartoons and also enjoy metroidvania games (and can deal without having combat options), I feel like this game will keep your interest long enough to go all the way with it.

To start with, this is an easy but very charming Metroidvania. The animations are great and music wonderful, so much love went into making this game. This is the most of the making this coring. There is no fighting or killing enemies, it is all platforming puzzles, go from A to B and finding secret areas. The game is so cozy and recommended to pick up, even more if you are playing together with a child or with friends. Completed with most of the gems and unlockables but after beating the story I had no intention to get everything 100%.

Disney Illusion Island is a fun Metroidvania-light. Not a masterpiece by any means, but a fun way to spend a couple of hours. The reason why "light" was added to the type of game is because it is quite hand-holding - its biggest flaw - very linear and it features no combat whatsoever. Gameplay-wise, Disney Illusion Island is focused entirely on its exploration aspects. And as Metroidvanias go, it checks all the boxes: unlock new capabilities to pass the roadblocks you previously come across and slowly discover the entire game world.

This being Disney, the animation and writing is top-notch. I'm not a huge fan of the character models for anyone but Donald Duck, but I do like how they are animated old school Disney style. Also, while the story is nothing earth-shattering and anyone with half a brain could see the plot tiwst coming from miles away, it was entertaining enough for the duration of the game. The sarcastic humor in the game suggests it wasn't written for the youngest Disney fans, but that's part of why I thought it was entertaining.

There are plenty of things one could criticize Disney Illusion Island for, but the only thing I can really fault it for is the way it communicates the unlocking of fast travel. This happens after you pass what the game pretends is the point of no return, only to reveal later that the actual point of no return would occur slightly later. If you want to search for as many hidden collectibles as possible before playing the endgame, they shouldn't have discouraged players from getting past that fake point of no return. Honestly, that's just bad writing.

Apart from that, this is a fun little game devoid of any pretense. It doesn't pretend to be more than it actually is and that works in its favor.

First off, the cutscenes and art style of this game are wonderful. Pretty much most of the score this gets is based on the art and music, which includes the cutscenes at the beginning and end that are in the modern mickey animation style.

However, overall this game is nothing short of a walking simulator. There are, I think, four boss fights, each that follows the exact same pattern of combat (presented in four ways but still basically the same) and death does not really have any consequence. If you die during a boss, you just continue from that phase. So you can die to reset your hearts without losing any progression.

Its not a bad game, its just nothing spectacular from a mechanics perspective. You get a "slightly" better second jump. A "slightly" better traversal skill in the Yo-Yo. A "slightly" better falling speed with the hover ability. But you never unlock anything that is truly worth while until just before the final chapter where you can then fast travel to any save spot. There are platforming challenges all around, but once you discover there is no goal but a gallery, the want to complete them may fade.

I do think this would be a good game for a younger child to play as their first foray into a metroidvania style game or to get them the fundamentals of a platforming game. I think the length of a casual playthrough is perfect, given there isn't a lot of options other than run and jump for 90% of the game.

A pretty chill Metroidvania game with a great cast and story that plays out like an episode of The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse with the same animation style. The boss fights and abilities were interesting. The most interesting thing about it may hvae been my first time playing a Metroidvania with two other players which worked out better than I would have imagined. This made some of the puzzles very interesting.

A fun game featuring a charming and humorous story starring Mickey and friends. Gameplay reminds of 2d Metroid games. The art style is beautiful. Gameplay can get a bit repetitive at times and often involves a lot of backtracking, but overall an enjoyable game, especially in multiplayer.

Disney Illusion Island is a well polished game. The animation in this game is fantastic with all characters having their own personality plus the voice acting is top notch. Tight controllers and increasingly more abilities to unlock makes the experience worth it. Story is alright and serviceable for their target demographic. Music is really good in this game! Everything is instrumentals and the last boss battle music has some Dual of Fates feels to it... okay it's not as epic as Dual of Fates, but it sure is incredible, even better than it should have been.

Difficulty wise it's a forgiving game. Plenty of check points and infinite lives. Helps that it's a short game. I manage to finish it in almost 10 hours with 99% completion.

Really fun! Tight mechanics, good level design. Great as a casual game to play with friends. Not too hard - it has enough challenge to stay interesting, but with multiple people, the game is pretty forgiving, so even when it starts getting harder you don't really have to struggle.

Art is great, cutscenes are sometimes fun though sometimes felt a bit too "kiddy" for us to enjoy. It's a little on the short side but worth the price IMO if it sounds like what you're in the mood for!

Disney Illusion Island’s platforming may be extremely polished but it’s not particularly inventive, and nor is it likely to appeal to anyone who favours a more combat-oriented Metroidvania experience – its enemies are strictly for dodging rather than destroying, and its small assortment of boss fights are mostly anticlimactic. Where it excels, though, is in providing a wholesome co-operative journey through a charismatic cartoon world that’s well-suited to pairings of parents and their children, or perhaps older and younger siblings. It effectively gives every member of the party the means to happily bound along on the ride without ever being made to feel like a burden. If you’re after a frictionless, family-friendly platforming adventure that’s heavy on charm and light on challenge, then Disney Illusion Island fits the bill better than a muzzle on Donald Duck.
