A turn based strategy RPG set in a fantasy world. You seem to play a group of ‘bad guys’ getting revenge on a badder guy.

Being a big RPG and Dungeons & Dragons fan, I quite enjoyed this game. You have a quirky cast of characters with good voice acting to set the scene, and the turn based combat scratches that D&D fix. You have to really think about the battles, which enemies to pick off, if you’re going to risk actions going for treasure chests instead, how can you defend your positions with traps, seems like there could be many ways to approach every mission.

The missions can be quite challenging, I’m not sure if it was because I didn’t upgrade my characters well enough, or if the difficulty level was too hard. In the end I had to drop the settings to easy mode. Admittedly it wasn’t very challenging then, some missions did offer some problems, but on the whole things were straight forward. They still felt like long, gruelong fights that I had to earn the victories, so if you do want the threat of losing and restarting the mission from the start, crank up the difficulty.

The missions themselves don’t vary too much from just ‘beat up all the people on the map’. There are a few missions with objectives, but the variety of bad guys, map layouts and objectives is a bit slim.

The story is ok, but it is let down by the presentation. No cut scenes or nice animations, just an illustration with some text that’s narrated. A shame as it’s stops you feeling invested in the characters and story as much. Also it’s a shame about the amount of playable characters. You’re really only limited to 4, and if you play through each mission you’ll get enough experience points to basically level up those 4 characters to be near unbeatable. Just strange for an RPG to have so little choice in that aspect.

But at the end of the day, the value from this game, which is easily available for under £10, its a neat little bargain.it may not have a lasting impression, but you can get some fun nights out of it.

Blackguards 2 improves on its predecessor in almost every other respect. Daedalic effectively removed the elements that made last year's release annoying at all the wrong moments, and left its players with the best parts of the experience. It's still a methodical, almost plodding tactical roleplaying game, but now it's easier to find the fun and to enjoy its world and characters.
