A game with a lot of potential that was squandered due to sheer laziness and following the trend of releasing games unfinished.

This game was enjoyable to an extent, but has so many issues that do not exist in any other game and can only be summed up as they just decided to release it without finishing it or adding simple things you'd find in any other game.

Pros:

-The side stories are very interesting. Especially the UC Vanguard and Ryujin Industries quest lines.
-The world building is quite good. They do a good job telling the story of how the universe is how it is and how the factions were established and interact with each other.

Cons:
There are so many to list. Here we go:

-The main story is really boring and simple and the ending is super unsatisfying. It just felt like a gel to tie together all the interesting side quests and faction quests. The explanation for why things happen is really not good and after playing about 20 minutes of new game + realized that the changes that I read would happen are superficial and don't really matter so it's not even worth doing.

-The main issue is the LACK OF A MAP ON WORLDS. It is criminal how they don't give you one. There's just a compass. and when you click "ground map" it's BLANK. It's like they were gonna add one but just said screw it we don't have time or we don't feel like it. You literally have to write down or just remember where things are. It's the most bs annoying aspect of the entire game.

-The inventory management system is horrible. You get almost no carrying space and if you go over your weight limit you lose oxygen with every step you make, and you can't fast travel at all. So you end up having to drop or not pick up so many things that you could find use for. It's beyond frustrating.

-The space combat really sucks. If you are against more than 1 ship you can just expect to die. The controls for rerouting power around your ship are so crappy that by the time you reroute your engines to shields and weapons the enemy ships have already destroyed your shields and almost killed you. If i encountered enemy ships id just let them kill me and reload the save. That's how stupid it is.

-People walk at the speed of a snail in this game. There are so many "follow this person" missions and you literally have to like play on your phone or go use the bathroom to give them enough time to walk to wherever they are going so you can finally follow them. Your natural walk is literally 10 times faster.

-The voicing in this game is super annoying. They don't have any volume system or dialogue management at all. So, any time you walk by ANYONE they have something to say. And it's always at the same volume as everyone else. So if you are doing a main story quest or side quest where the main person is talking, good luck hearing them cause every person you walk by is gonna have to tell you that they ate an orange for breakfast or they like reading magazines. And what is even dumber is their dialogue overwrites the dialogue of the quests in the subtitles too. Also, your companion talks a lot too and will talk over the quest as well. It's so horrible.

-The crafting for your houses is so bad. They don't include very many options and there's no way to buy or unlock more. And then on top of that, a glitch deleted 90% of the things in my house randomly and when i was building it wouldn't let me place certain things in spots it should of. They focus more on outpost building, but they don't even teach you how to do it properly. which leads me to my next point

-they don't teach you almost anything about the game. there are so many basic things i had to google how to do. like dock my ship and there are things that i didn't know were skills that really hinder progression like you can't even fly a high class ship without saving your level up points and doing tasks to get through so much of the ship section of skills. so i couldn't even progress certain main substories cause i didn't have the xp to get the points. or i had to destroy 20 ships which was impossible cause i couldn't even find enemy ships and they'd kill me cause the combat is so bad anyway. the lack of explanation in this game is again lazy and criminal.

-the lockpicking system is annoying and bad. sometimes it'll provide a lock sequence that you dont even have picks for so you have to restart the lockpick which makes you lose picks just to hope it spawns one you can actually do

-the exploration of planets is boring and tedious. THEY GIVE YOU NO VEHICLES AND YOU HAVE TO WALK 1 OR 2 KILOMETERS TO GET PLACES. it takes forever, and it's not fun. and most planets are quite empty with nothing to do.

I'm sure there's more i'm forgetting, but what it boils down to is this game is not finished and is very lazily made in a lot of areas. It's like they had some great ideas and a road map on making a really awesome well built game, but they just decided "eh we've done enough just release it cuz $$$"

Pros-
The gun play and customization are probably Bethesda’s best.
The ship customization is also a lot of fun.

Frustrating:
A lot of mechanics are locked behind skill points. For example combat slide, pick pocketing and the more flexible customization.

Disappointing:
The coolest follower can die and all the other followers are very boring.
Once he died there was a dialogue telling a character to tell him a joke. So like the world didn’t really react to him dying
In another part I killed an entire gang and went to do a different side quest. And ran into a gang member who was talking shit and there was no option to be like. “Hey I killed the rest of your gang pay up”

If you just play the major questlines, it's an allright game. You get some mediocre to well written stories, interrupted by many, many loading screens. If you are looking for what used to be Bethesda's strong suits (rewarding exploration, environmental storytelling & a coherent world): Look somewhere else, this is not for you.

Starfield is hands down the hardest game for me to review this year.

For context; I'm not the biggest Bethesda fan. Loved Skyrim. Never enjoyed Fallout; whether it be 3, 4 or New Vegas (despite multiple attempts at trying them). That Bethesda jank that we all know (and many love?) was too much for me when it came to the general shooting mechanics (despite V.A.T.S being a highlight). So when Starfield was announced, I really didn't have much interest.

After Bethesda gave us a deep dive into the game, I was shocked by how invested I was in it. Skyrim in space and with what looked like good shooting???

Fast forward to today and having over 60 hours into it, I can say that Starfield for me is a good game. But it's a good game with the makings of a great one. When it's good, it's a really great time but between a lot of loading screens when going from planet to planet, bland repetitive planets as a whole, no real map and some boring quests, you're having to go through a lot of medicore and disappointing content to get to the good stuff.

I cannot underestimate just how disappointing it was every single time I had to pause to select the planet I wanted to quick travel to. I get that it was implemented to help make travelling to all of the planets a much easier process, but I would have happily taken far less planets if it meant travelling felt more...engaging. It would have also helped with the sense of exploration that the game lacks in comparison to previous Bethesda titles.

But there's a lot of positives here as well. The shooting feels great which was such a relief (and ironically makes me excited for the next Fallout). Faction Missions were easily the highlight of the game for me and where I found myself at my most invested.

Also I created a version of the Serenity ship from Firefly. So thank you for that, Bethesda.

Oh man. This game was a rollercoaster.

The absolute griphold Starfield had on my brain for the 3 months surrounding it's launch was unmatched by any game in a while. I watched all the videos, trailers and concept art. I usually hold my breath but I was convinced this was going to be the next Skyrim for me. I wasn't even convinced that I loved space exploration, but the trailers that showcased a mix of Fallout and Skyrims skill tree system was so interesting.

Even a month into playing the game, I was still thinking about it all the time, and having a blast playing. The game was repetitive, and grindy but it felt like I was working towards something. It felt like I was really exploring.

One day I just realized that the game was trash.

I had explored the same bland outpost for a 10th time, I had done the 20th fast travel simulator side quest, and I had completed another space battle that gave me nothing. None of the quests had interesting payoffs, all of them felt empty afterwards and I felt like I was sitting in a menu for 70% of my gameplay, between fast travel, finding planets, managing inventory, managing my outposts and building my ship.

In the end, it was fun while it lasted but I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone. Maybe the DLC will improve it? I'll try it but not holding out hope.

A big mid 7.5/10 game from Bethesda. The weakest exploration wise, but the best shooting combat from them. Faction quest are much better than the main quest. I enjoyed my time with it for the most part. The ending credits music glitched and kept playing the same first three seconds of it over and over. I wouldn't expect any less. Big thumbs up.

This game is bad not for any major flaws. It’s bad because I felt nothing whilst playing it. The game fails at everything that I like about a Bethesda game. The exploration is bad, the role playing is bad, and the story never once got me interested. I preordered this game. I know I am a fool now. But I hope that I was wrong, the work to make a game like this is massive and I want to love it as much as Bethesdas other games. Starfeild is just a massive disappointment. You can wave off fallout 76 as a small teams troubles, but you can’t for Starfeild. This game is one I regret paying for.

What this game is
Starfield is a solid space adventure game. Want to be a space pirate stealing everything in site and leaving carnage? You can. Want to be an explorer and survey new solar systems and planets? You can. Want to become a hermit on an empty planet away from the hustle and bustle of the cities? You can. Starfield leaves the doors open to your own imagination and how you explore the great cosmos

The Good
I gave Starfield an 8 solely for the experience it gave me. The story was solid and I felt like I was apart of a growing world learning about the cosmos. The sheer amount of customization kept me wondering how to approach situations (I settled for an assualt/sniper build and had a blast).

The Bad
Bugs are expected but I did run into a couple invisible walls, talking to ships in space while on planets, and dinosaurs falling from the sky (keep this one i loved it). A lot of players had issues with audio and overall lag but I imagine in future patches the performance will be better. Sometimes in combat combatants would freeze up. No mech spaceships

Overall
One of the better bethesda experiences, considering I was on edge about playing after my fallout 4 launch experience and my love for the elderscrolls series. Looking forward to mods and dlc, as well as jumping back into the great unknown in a new way 8/10

The game play would be improved by easier movement around planets, but otherwise, I love this game! I know it's gotten a lot of hate, but I've enjoyed exploring the different planets and playing through the Ryujin, Freestar and currently working on the Crimson Fleet sub quests. Played through part of the UC quest as well and that had a nice twist!

I haven't finished the main questline still because I'm flying around questing. It reminds me of Skyrim in that regard because I played hundreds of hours with two different characters and never finished all of the quests!

Bethesda strikes again with another highly controversial launch of a highly anticipated game. Many expected some sort of revolutionary open world and game, I expected Skyrim but in space and that's exactly what I got. My biggest problem with this game is they did not figure out how make the space exploration fun. Every time you leave a planet and explore a new system it's about 4 different loading screens between you reach your destination, very annoying. However I was very pleased with the side content in this game and it comes as no surprise as building a world and making it feel alive and lived in is what Bethesda does best. The main story was very good. Many twists and turns I did not expect and at the end having to maker a choice that I don't think I would have been completely at peace with either way. Which in my opinion is a good thing, as it leaves food for thought and an interesting topic to discuss among friends. Starfield is a good, not great game, that suffers from Bethesda's poor game pacing and lack of technological innovation but excels in immersing you into a very cool story that takes you places you wouldn't expect. Had this game overcome it's issues before release, you would have had an all time classic on your hands. Instead, we get a good game, in a packed year (2023) of other good games.

Simply the worst game I have ever played. Of course taking into consideration the budget and development time. “25 years in the making” with a real development time of 7 years… How on earth!

Starfield is one huge dung of confusion. Nothing is made deliberately. Starfield is a vast procedurally generated universe full of pointless items, enemies ,powers and buildings to discover. There are hundreds of highly detailed small and big items ranging from coffe mugs to toilet paper, serving absolutely no purpose other than to clog up your inventory and have a sell price of 2 credits.

The buildings you discover are copy pasted even between different galaxies. You do the same events inside the same buildings, fighting the same enemies with the exact same “strategy”. There are 24 powers/spells which you can discover! Unfortunately, 1 combat sucks, 2 how you discover these powers are even worse. You have to find these copy pasted temples, float around for 5 minutes collecting dust and entering a portal. 24 times the exact same “event”.

The npcs are Neanderthal looking with deformed bulging eyes sticking out looking at you from unnatural angles. Lighting is horrible and brings out the worst features in their deformed horrified faces.

After I figured out for myself there were no soul in this empty husk of a machinery of a game I permanently deleted it and felt huge relief. If you have to force yourself through something it is time to let go. Sure even in good games there are dragging parts here and there, but this game is dragging from start to finish. If you can find joy in the “world building” and quests I envy you. I couldn’t and for good reason.

I actually liked Starfield, and I think it gets too much hate. It is, however, my least favorite BGS game to date. Still, it was nice getting addicted to a BGS game for a while.

Starfield tries to do a lot of things but it doesn't really master doing any of those things, and I think that's one of it's core issues. Yeah it does shipbuilding, but that's just okay and has a learning curve. Yeah it has all these planets but they're all empty and they're not worth visiting as much like No Man's Sky. Yeah you can build outposts but who cares.

To me, the game excels when you play it more like BGS games that are a bit older - grab quest after quest in cities and doing them all back to back to back. I ran around New Atlantis, Neon, Akila, and etc. doing this and had a good time. But once those quests ran out the game lost its luster very quickly. So I wrapped the main story after that, enjoyed that as well especially since it played with some cool themes, and that was it. I moved on.

I really want to be addicted to Starfield, to love it and keep playing it, but it doesn't have enough oomf to really keep pulling me in.

Also I want to shout out Starfield's New Game+. Because they do it in a very unique and cool way that I don't think any game has done before. Iykyk.

It's a beautiful game but it could have been so much better. You spend a lot of time in menus, the story is mediocre, the characters are boring, there are a lot of randomly generated worlds from algorithms that feel exactly the same, the ships control very bad, space navigation is boring and some missions layouts are broken. The space is filled with people everywhere, you rarely feel isolated. However, great music, great scale of lots of things to do, great side quests, great art direction and performance on Series S (tho the graphics are oudated). It's a complicated title, it does some stuff brilliant, and some others are crap. Playing for the main quest is a 6/10, playing for being around is a 8/10, so 7/10 seems fair.

The exorbitant $60+ price tag imposed by Bethesda for Starfield hardly justifies the lackluster gaming experience it offers. Despite this hefty cost, the game fails to deliver substantial content at launch, leaving players feeling shortchanged. Surprisingly, the Xbox Game Pass version attempts to salvage a bit of the wreckage, offering a somewhat more bearable experience. However, it only underscores the questionable value proposition of the standard edition.

The baffling pre-release sales strategy, coupled with the Game Pass integration, leaves one questioning Bethesda's decision-making—raising a resounding "WTF." It's evident that Starfield falls short of expectations, and the disappointment is magnified by the apparent attempt to emulate more successful titles like No Man's Sky.

This iteration of Bethesda is a far cry from the standards set by its predecessors, leaving veterans of the studio yearning for the days when they could confidently associate the name with quality gaming. Starfield is a regrettable departure from the Bethesda we once knew and admired, cementing its status as a subpar No Man's Sky ripoff, lacking both depth and originality.

It's so empty, so lifeless, so cluttered with 'look at how diverse we are' moments, it's such an insult to anyone's intelligence to try to sell you this. seen as the biggest game of the second half of this year. details below

upon beginning the game, the graphics themselves are simply stunning. even miscellanous objects found at the side of areas otherwise meant for combat have immense detail, and given the correct lighting conditions, character models don't look too bad. however, the visuals become very uneasy with what can only be described as a filter, that depreciates what would otherwise be a remarkable environment. it's comparable to the filter present in later games of the 360//PS3 era. at a minimum, some vignette would have made it more bearable, but, in time, you will accept it.

on the topic of the environment, it is surprisingly realised, original for a sci-fi work. there are progressive aesthetics throughout, an entire faction which is western-themed, and a mission within a self-proclaimed emporium. furthermore, the weaponry doesn't force itself to appear neo-futuristic, there are a handful of weapons which wouldn't be out of place in a cod, perhaps.

the gunplay is less remarkable than i had hoped, while it is certainly entertaining, and you will go out of your way to partake in it, it doesn't exactly hit, or have a moment of excellence. many weapons are highly customizable, but i wish that more let you choose the firing mode, as those that don't would benefit greatly from an auto function. whilst modding, assuming you're at new atlantis, you will find how tedious it is to mod en masse. an option to purchase the required materials for an upgrade would save noting what you need, fast travelling to jemison mercantile, buying what you need, travelling back, and finally upgrading. apart from such hiccups, the gunplay overall delivers a smooth experience (despite the 30fps lock), highly individual to the player.

the boots-on-the-ground fps combat also has a sidekick, in that of the starship dogfights. it serves as a companion to the main event of gunplay, being more shallow, repetitive, and mindless. it feels like, as the game is about space exploration, the developers felt obligated to add such a distraction. what bothers me the most about it is that the celestial combat is presented as the yang to the traditional shooting's yin, but it's simply impossible for it to be that way. this is most clearly shown with the following statistic; throughout my playthrough, i only got in ~20 battles whilst in my ship, whereas i got in countless skirmishes on foot.

many status effects are unneccesarily annoying. the game is eager to punish you if you don't have the adequate treatment for your issue. it could be as little as slightly more damage taken, or as agonizing as losing ~15% of your oxygen, per step (or that's what it feels like, at least).

though it becomes truly realised around halfway through, the story is well structured and fairly open throughout. there are times where, unaware, you'll make a massive decision, and you'll be made aware of your consequent fate - or that of others - in time. it's not the most in-depth set of choices, i will say, but the attempt made is enjoyable, if nothing else. the finale feels lacking, in some capacity. it's simply a setup for ng+, a mechanic which i have never been fond of. otherwise, it accomplishes the role it's given, but it is certainly not an enthralling tale.

although it's the point, to an extent, 4/5 of the planets i have visited have, quite simply, nothing on them. the ones that do are either related to quests (side, more often than main), or, on the planet view, alert me of a place of interest on the planet usable as a shooting gallery. on the topic, those locations seldom offer even a weapon with bolstered stats.

every character you meet is simply fun to interact with, even if you dislike them. the members of constellation all manage to appear colourful and unique, which is commendable as they aren't forced upon the player (though, in bethesda fashion, they are literally in your face).

the missions are remotely correlated. yes, the goal of most missions is to obtain an artifact, but that is seemingly the only similarity. of course, before each, there is a story-focussed segment, but they are unneccesary as you would be able to understand the story perfectly in their absence. a positive effect of this is that every new mission feels refreshing, even if no new mechanics are explicitly introduced. as play becomes a chore, and you become less aware, the game slaps you in the face with a 4 hour long session out of nowhere! what is excellent is that they're not agonizing towards the end, you still feel comfortable after playing for a long time; assuming, at least, you're partaking in one of those 4 hour long sessions.
overall, i recommend! 8.7/10

Really great game over all, main story is the best bethesda have made so far. Side quests and other activities were fun and interesting, and choices actually meant something. Met a few minor bugs but nothing game breaking. I totally recommend Starfield to any rpg fan.

Slow at the start, but once you get into it you have a lot of content to dive into. Combat is fun and it have some interesting missions although some of the missions can feel a bit "chorey". Really liked some of the faction quests. Exploring outside of the cities felt pointless and boring, so i stuck mostly to the setlements and missionpoints.

+Much content
+Interesting characters/companions
+Weapons and shooting

- A lot of glitches (Could not complete heart of mars due to mining glitch)
- A lot of loading screens
- Fighting in a spacecraft felt clunky. Sometimes you get stuck in a loop were you cant get out of a space fight because you respawn right into the fight.

All in all i think the game is fun and you get a lot of value and content for your money. Congratulation to bethesda for making a great universe to play around in.
