Scorn gets by almost entirely on its aesthetic and sound design. For the most part, it's a slow puzzle game that tells you very little. Eventually, some combat is introduced, and most of it sucks (though, strangely, in a way it helps the overall feelings of dread and fear, because you'll almost always just want to run and hide from every single enemy, unless you have no other choice). The "story" is limited and never overtly explained, and there's a key component to it that can be easy to miss (Hint: it's in the Act I to Act II transition + the first half of Act II or if you'd rather just know: the character you play in Act I becomes the parasite that latches onto you in Act II). Even knowing that, you get more questions and hints than actual answers. If you want a fast/fun time, Scorn is a terrible choice. If you enjoy H. R. Giger and you want a plodding, unsettling experience in which too many things can be described as "fleshy", you might find something you like here.Updated 2 Weeks Ago

This kind of game speak to my soul, the artstyle is impeccable, the worldbuilding is gorgeous, the sound design is amazing, the puzles are curious but enjoyable. I wish it had more of a storyline, but I understand its set on a post language/civilization world so its kind of unviable. As it is you travel a decadent world in a search of trascendence beyond an infected bodyUpdated 2 Months Ago

So much missed potential… The presentation is obviously outstanding. A beautiful, yet disgusting rendition of HR Giger’s artwork that will appeal to any fan of the Alien movies. Unfortunately, the gameplay basically never coalesces and even during its best moments, something is always dragging it down. You basically just walk around large structures reminiscent of the derelict from Alien and solve “puzzles.” Unfortunately, the puzzles aren’t great. They’re all a matter of using unintuitive machines in a very specific order to magically unlock the way forward. You can usually figure things out with some trial and error but it rarely gives the coveted “ah-ha” moments and the game literally tells you nothing. A handful of moments were really unclear to me and had me walking in circles for 20 minutes before I looked at a guide. Another problem is that the devices and switches are usually very far apart and need to be used in a contrived order, so there’s a ton of backtracking and even more if you get stuck or miss something. This aimless wandering is a significant chunk of the runtime and bloats what is already a fairly boring game.
The levels themselves are rough too. They all look and feel too similar and have confusing maze-like layouts. There are some cool moments here but not enough to break up the monotony, especially given how short and geographically small this is. The last 3rd is much cooler but the gameplay annoyances never quit. The final puzzles require you to take damage in a game with finite healing and this happens right after a boss fight - bad game design! The story is intriguing but they give you so little context that it’s tough to take anything away from this without a Youtube video. Apparently, it's a metaphor for having a miscarriage, idk!
Lastly is the terrible combat. For one, the combat isn't fully introduced until about a third of the way in, making this initial stretch very dull. Unfortunately, after combat is introduced, it goes from dull to frustrating. Combat usually feels bad in horror games on purpose but Scorn takes it too far. All of your actions (change weapon, reload, attack) are unnecessarily clunky and most enemies slowly crawl around and have way too much health (You should usually just run away). This combat feels like 2 elderly people boxing and neither one is landing any hits. The whole system is just lame and doesn’t invoke the terror it should. Enemies aren't frightening or imposing, they’re just annoying like insects. The boss fight at the end is pretty laughable too, as you play "ring around the rosy" for 10 minutes waiting for the weak spot to open.
One other thing: this doesn’t have manual saves so you’re at the mercy of auto-saves. Alien Isolation and RE7 pretty concretely showed that manual saves are better for horror games and this is a great demonstration of auto-saves being a detriment. It’s frustrating when you lose a lot of progress while you also won’t feel as tense because you don’t know how much progress you’ll lose if you die. Lose-lose.
Add all this together… You’ve got tedious unintuitive trial-and-error puzzles, confusing large levels, and a frustrating combat system that detracts more than it adds. Literally none of this works: It’s not a good horror game, it’s not a good walking simulator, and it’s not a good puzzle game. Even on a second playthrough, I think this would still be a slog.
This feels like it was made by artists and not game developers. It is bizarre to me that this can have AAA visuals/atmosphere while its gameplay is beyond amateur. You can clearly see what they were going for and it ALMOST works at a few spots but the gameplay is fundamentally bad.

Played this through game pass and bought the physical art book of the game shortly after. I had to compensate for not directly buying this piece of art. I am going to be honest. I was not very familiar with the work of H.R Giger before playing Scorn. If I were a fan boy perhaps I would have written this review out of bitterness to protect my ego. Enough about that.Scorn is truly something else. You are thrown into this desolate, forgotten and collapsed world/factory/society. Structures and machinery are made out of bone and flesh. Everything is dead, yet at the same time breathing. At first I thought this whole creation was a satire of society, or some profound message about humanity’s history with tearing down and rebuilding societies for eons. The artbook and especially the ending probed my suspicions incorrect.
It was all about transcending, the whole thing was a test sort of. Drawing in interesting dilemmas of coexisting and forming a (involuntary) symbiotic relationship with a parasite. How something can help you, yet at the same time hurt you. Very interesting and thought provoking world. The whole thing is very engrossing and atmospheric. It is cryptic, yet intriguing and understandable.
Overall I must give this game an 85, no less. The world building is incomparable with almost any other game. This is truly a piece of art. While in gameplay aspects it can be lacking, despite very interesting puzzles. I truly love this morbid flesh world.

i came into this knowing very little of the game's actual content other than seeing glimpses of incredible visuals in the occasional image/clip and the polarizing reception from those who had been anticipating it. i never personally played any demos or followed along with the development, trailers, or anything of the sort so i didn't have any of the baggage that may have came with that.when i started this up, i was expecting a horror tinged adventure game that veered closer to a walking sim with some unfortunate combat thrown in for good measure. my first surprise was the environmental design and puzzles. right from the beginning it felt like what i had been seeing in terms of difficulty and complexity had been ripped from Myst. was absolutely fascinated with the obscurity of the flow from area to area and the various puzzles themselves. i can see where some would've had less tolerance for this but i'm glad it clicked for me.
elsewhere i was pleasantly surprised with the combat even. there's no getting around it, the combat feels like complete trash. fortunately for me (and anyone else who played similarly) you can avoid fighting anything a solid 80% of the time if you move your ass. lots of enemies and hazards are in places that you're passing through on your way to go elsewhere and won't be back so there's no harm in running. the occurrences of enemies in spots that i was returning to was infrequent enough that i didn't mind when i had to deal with them all that much. beyond that, the actual boss type encounter that shows is shockingly decent for how the gameplay is and as someone who will happily trash a decent 70% of the boss fights i play in games.
that leaves me with the aforementioned selling point, the aesthetics. this is visually one of the most stunning games i've ever seen. Giger influence isn't anything unique among games (or any media) but the absolute devotion to its design, even at the cost of everything else was refreshing.
it's over just as quickly as it gets started and it won't be making my faves list or anything (at least not upon this first playthrough, maybe in a few years with a replay?) but this feels like a truly singular piece of art. maybe this isn't what it was looking like during development or what people who were waiting otherwise wanted but i'm truly glad to have experienced it, flaws and all.

Scorn is a horrible shooter, a boring walking sim, and a mediocre adventure/puzzle game. Even though it's only 5 hours long, I could barely finish the game because of how sad the gameplay is, and a boss fight at the end just adds to the overall frustration. The only good thing about Scorn is its gorgeous art style a-la H.R. Giger. And it's the only reason to play it, but since everything else is horrible, I suggest watching a Youtube walkthrough.

While Scorn is an exacting and unnerving tour de force, it's gameplay is often frustrating beyond the point of reasonableness, it's puzzles are obtuse in ways not meant for mortal me, and its narrative choices that not only prove frustrating but cowardly. As when the game crescendos to something intriguing it ends with the biggest horror trope of them all.Updated 4.5 Months Ago

Such a grueling, and riveting architecture and art design in this game! Absolutely astonishing, the world building is truly remarkable. Combat sucks very hard, almost made me quit near the end. The animations are very slow, and tedious, during combat it is very time consuming to just switch between weapons, or reload. I think a little narration would have helped the game to be more immersive, it all feels like a kind of depiction of hell to me anyway. I never played a game before that had this much explicit detail concerning the human anatomy, flesh and bone structure. Most of the time it is very brutal, harsh, and has some loathsome scenes, it had a huge impact on me. Very memorable game, I won't forget this anytime soon...Updated 5.5 Months Ago

Scorn is an extraordinary example of interactive art, with a rare level of atmosphere and visual accomplishment for a game. The story is told through countless metaphors and it's abundance of uneasy sights. Gameplay is prescriptive and mostly a straight line to the end, containing puzzles, enemies, weapons, and so many things that you just want to observe with wonder and disgust. Unfortunately, Scorn is a 6-10 hour experience, which isn't much for it's price. I think it's a great purchase for more casual gamers who enjoy immersion and horrific settings.Updated 5.5 Months Ago

The world design and world-building are amazing, the puzzles are great too. But the fighting/shooting mechanics are very sub-par and the ending was a major letdown. The first and last part of the game (besides the ending) were absolutely the best parts of the game. Sadly the middle part where combat is introduced is the weakest and longest part of the game. The “boss fight” was decent and the only time I kinda liked the combat.
Also health… be prepared to have 1hp half the game, where health replenishing is few and far between obtainable. The game also introduces a “fun” “mechanic” where you lose health every time you complete a puzzle or proceed to a new area. It feels like you just have to run past most enemies in the later part of the game to be able to survive.
TLDR: Exploring the game world and solving puzzles is fun, combat is NOT.
Do not expect any kind of handholding, you need to figure out EVERYTHING for yourself by exploring the world and “messing around” with everything you come across. You can’t fail any puzzles, so you don’t have to be afraid of locking yourself out of anything (outside of the 2nd achievement). If you really need guidance to play a puzzle game, then probably skip this one.
If the game was purely exploring the world and completing puzzles this game would have got an 8 easily!

A thoroughly displeasing and almost arrogantly incompetent game. A walking simulator masquerading as a survival horror, not belonging to either. Falls apart when combat is introduced, as it feels like a constant nuisance rather than an intense encounter. All I could do was roll my eyes at the sight of a blob of muscle limping towards me, knowing the boredom I had awaiting me. I quit this game a long time ago, for similar reasons, but the outstanding artistic vision (along with its appearance on Humble Choice) brought me back again. It's a very poor game, but a great visual showcase. I wholeheartedly wish I enjoyed it.
4/10.

Určitě patří mezi hry co má cenu si zahrát. Pobuřující vizuálem a uchvacující atmosférou.
Nákresů, soch a dalších.

Upsetting and strange. The H.R. Giger inspirations are on point. Everything is bones, metal, meat, and frustrating blurs between and everything is just. so. wet. It's so cool and weird and unique. Pretty short too. Beat it in one night. There are a lot of reasons to be cautious about this game. Gore, body horror, trypophobia, and just extremely unsettling imagery around pregnancy, surgery, sexuality, and PARASITES. The parasite imagery turned out to be very... challenging for me. It's a harsh vibe, but honestly worth playing. Be warned: The game does not tell you how to play it. The combat is better than you think, but you have to figure out how the pistol works first. The grotesque visuals really carry the experience. Decent puzzles and an interest in seeing each new set piece kept me going, but awful combat implementation and the lack of a map really bogged it down for me. You don't even get an opportunity to utilize the final weapon in regular combat, it all feels a bit tacked on in an attempt to give the game some more variety. It's a shame too, because the stylized bio-organic look of the weapons feels fresh and unique, and I really dug the idea of replenishing health packs and ammo at designated stations. There's a fun survival horror title buried somewhere in here, but as is there isn't enough to warrant more than an initial playthrough. Thankfully it's short length ensures that these issues don't overstay their welcome. If you're a fan of Cronenberg-esque body horror or the works of H.R. Giger, it's absolutely worth a run (especially if you can get it for cheap).Updated 10.5 Months Ago

ENGLISH :A hell of an atmosphere (no pun intended), the visuals associated with the sound environment are striking. Gameplay nothing incredible except it's a raw experience (no explanation whatsoever, no talking, and that's a good thing), and the few fights are clunky (probably on purpose).
IMO, Scorn should be taken more of a contemplative game than an active one.
I wouldn't say it's worth the 39.99€ asked for its released, but I understand why the devs put it at this price : they were a small team and worked on it for more than 6 years... At 15-20€ you could consider it but I advice to play it via the Xbox Gamepass, a way better deal.
Not the game of the century, but nevertheless that wil be a game you'll remember for a long time for his uniqueness style, and it has in my eyes the immense merit of bringing something really new and therefore, to contribute and enriching the video game sphere.
FRANCAIS :
