A perfectly balanced walking simulator with a little bit of platforming, a little bit of running and hiding from scary things, a little bit of story. Story is very simple and solid with scottish accent giving it a special charm. Visuals and sound are great. One of the best interactive movies I've played.

Really enjoyed this game. Slight bias since I used to live in Scotland and am still hopelessly infatuated with it... but nevertheless the Scottish atmosphere and the oil rig setting immediately help it stand out. Add on top of this amazing enemy design and inspirations that combine the best parts of Annihilation and The Thing... and, well, I had an absolute blast.

It's still basically a walking sim, but it is lean, fun and doesn't waste your time. Enjoyed the hell out of this game. Much more than other games in this class, such as Alan Wake 2 or Hellblade 2. Highly recommended for any horror fans, or fans of Scotland, Annihilation or The Thing.

Walking simulator with minor horror elements. The body horror was so run of the mill that it made the game less scary. Great scenario, graphics and voice acting all wasted with mediocre scares.

Everything in this game is good, not great or amazing but good.
Except for the voice acting and in general the Scottish vibe, that really stood out to me and I loved listening to the many conversations. It's honestly just fun because it's very different from the usual English way for speaking.
There were a couple of problems with understanding what to do, especially with using underwater bars to boost yourself forward.

PROS

* The voice acting is honestly shockingly good from a game like this. It gets bonus points for everyone being Scottish, and even more bonus points for the subtitles translating Scottish English to everyone else English.

* The main character is very likeable for such a short game and his dialogue was some of the most relatable of any horror game I've ever played.

* The setting is incredibly good. Never did I think I needed a horror game set on an Oil Rig but I now have a deeply ingrained fear of them after the game. Everywhere is crafted to be a solid fear inducing set piece.

* The body horror of this game is fantastic in a horrible way. Everything in this game is gruesome and if you are an enjoyer of horror it will be for you.

* The game is a very good length. It hits the perfect balance of not being too short and not overstaying its welcome.

CONS

* The gameplay is very simplistic. There isn't a ton going on, there's not really puzzles, and the horror survival portion of the game is more 80% walking simulator and 20% survival.

* For how much I like the main character there's nothing for any other character. They all just exist until the game decides that they don't.

* Again for how good the body horror is in the game, there's a shocking amount of dead bodies that are just...fine? For some reason? One of the earliest moments of tension is you finding a body inside of a water tank and not being able to see their face until you slowly lift them up. But when you do it's just a normal face. It sets this tension like you expect something horrific to be depicted but then the game just doesn't deliver. This happens a lot through the game and it's a bit disappointing all things considered.

* The ending of the game is pretty lackluster. Not in the sense that it doesn't explain anything, because I think there's value in horror that just isn't explained to the viewer. What disappoints me is the game just kind of ends. The main character does a complete 180 in personality right at the end despite everything they've gone through up to that point and it does honestly lessen the rest of the game in my opinion.

Overall I found the game to be an enjoyable little horror survival game. It can't compete with the giants like Dead Space and Resident Evil, but it still manages to be a fun experience that I think is worth going through at least once if you're a fan of the genre and can endure a lot of the game simply being a walking simulator.

The Setting is quite interesting. The Unreal Engine 5 is doing a great job as well. But beside of that it’s pretty mediocre. The Story is nothing special and would be far better, when we as a player would find out what we drilled into. The mystical „we don’t tell you everything“ narrative just doesn’t work here. Also, how the game is telling you where to go is pretty lame. The entire plot is kinda like „go there or we will die, now that you fixed that, go there or we will die as well.“ From a gameplay perspective it’s a typical walking simulator. The controls while swimming are downright bad and sadly the last half is filled with swim sections. Wait till you get it on discount, then it’s quite okay for an evening session.

Very inconsistent with the interactions and partly confusing. Cannot tell if a door is supposed to be used or not, one moment it is not in the other it is.
The story does not feel coherent it feels like random disasters are chained together and noone else is able to help.

Fiquei bem curioso quando vi no The Game Awards do ano passado, aproveitei o gamepass e resolvi testar.

Aspectos a mejorar:

Jugabilidad repetitiva y uso excesivo de QTE (Quick Time Events).
Final abierto que deja algunas preguntas sin responder.

I played this game on my bro's Xbox on GamePass, and then came home and bought it here so I could own and support it more directly, if that tells you anything, but I might be a little weird.

I admit my expectations weren't extremely high, because I wasn't sure what to expect from The Chinese Room.

The first thing I want to call attention to is how fucking excellent the voice performances are. It absolutely nails the setting, an oil rig in the North Sea, manned by a bunch of Scots. The accents / dialect / language are impeccable, you will probably need subtitles if you are an average English speaker. The story gets pretty emotional and the voice deliver on that.

The game is fairly linear, but that didn't bother me in this case. This game does a lot with its horror set pieces, and never relies on cheap scares. The mystery of the antagonist in this game is at once chilling and compelling. Without spoiling too much, if you like Cosmic Horror, you should love this.

It's pretty short at 4-5 hours, but I would happily pay $35 for this experience, maybe more.

Despite the unique setting and the great dialogue and voice acting the game is mostly just...repetitive. While it looks great, there are weird clipping issues with the player animations that looks terrible, there's a lot of repetitive actions that become tedious, and even the monsters I didn't find particularly scary.

I think the closest I came to being horrified was seeing the tendril faces attached to the wall and going "Oh my God" and some chase sequences, but that's about it. I think the game would have benefited from letting you explore the rig and interact with the characters a bit more before the actual event happens. Because as it is, I barely knew these people and I CERTAINLY didn't give a damn when they started dying.

It's also an incredibly short game, which is fine, but because you're doing the same thing over and over and over it feels soooo much longer than it actually is. I'd be surprised if most players don't check out in the first half, and around that time they'll hit the swimming section and whew boy, it ain't fun. It also weirdly introduces mechanics that are barely used. Like it brings in this heating mechanic and I THINK it gets used like 3 times? And, despite being an electrician, you really don't do much in regards to electrician...ing. You just flip switches. I dunno, it all feels really half baked and for the full retail price with literally zero replay value? Not recommended.

This is a linear story-driven horror game, but sadly it just disappointed me in what the game should have done to me. The fear, the adrenaline, the horror. None of this exists in this experience because the game is not just linear; it's foregone.

The oil rig is beautiful, full of details that give the rig a living soul, as are the workers and their stories. But it's just a scheme, a facade that vanishes when trouble occurs, and the horror should appear. You don't empathize with other people because the game doesn't give the player the opportunity to do it, and the level design keeps using a bright yellow tone to indicate where you have to go, killing the sense of bewilderment.

The voice acting is astonishing, tho: the game is set on the North Sea, and everyone is Scottish with their funny accent.
The experience in general started very good, only to lose pieces at every progress you made till the very end.

From the team of Dear Esther and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, I expected more.

Incredibly authentic and creative environment. Who comes up with a horror game on a Scottish oil rig?! The voice acting is top notch, and the game is full of dread. Played with a friend, and we both thought it was pretty action-packed, defying the "walking simulator" tag, though it is highly linear. As a result, it can become a bit monotonous and predictable as it goes on ("Okay, this again..."). Great experience overall.

Oh sorry, couldn't type the review because it seems like the controls of the game have extended outside of it, IT'S SPREADING!!!

I could do something about it but I will be getting stuck in the environment, with non functional controls, or even better, straight up bugs that void 3 achievements on a 100% playthrough.

That's indeed what I like in a... horror game? What was scary about it? Drowning because of the weird "right click + space + forward + shift" combo? Or maybe it was the story where you go up and down 84 times through the rig?

Ok so, on a more serious note, I do find that the story of the game was not only predictable, but also bland with the reasons as to why the MC has to do all the tasks. Also, the monsters glitched around 5 times and they behave on a completely unpredictable manner, sometimes ignoring thrown stuff or more. Worst part is that they are not even scary, just a lump of flesh that follows you screaming or agonizing.

As you can probably tell, bugs screwed with my playthrough probably (I really hope I had bad luck and that this is not the norm) more than usual. I will say that the nail in the coffin was not getting the 3 achievements after doing them, it was just the last I needed for the buggy mess that this game was.

Awesome game. I really loved the setting and time period. The voice acting and environmental effects are so immersive, and they do such a great job of making you feel like you’re on an oil rig. I ended up learning a lot in the process! Also I think this game was just the right amount of scary. Some of the stealth sections and swimming can get a little frustrating, and I think the ending left a little to be desired, but overall it was more than worth the short and sweet playthrough.

The voice acting has to be the main and first thing I point out about the game. It is PHENONMENAL!!
The characters, because of it, felt so real. The graphics and atmosphere of the game were also incredible and I felt like I got to see a bit of Scottish culture and dialect through the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the subtitled work where it incorporated Scottish Gaelic speech and English (Gaelish) so you still still felt immersed and it didn't take away from the experience at all, it added to it!
The team on this game did an amazing job helping you feel attached to people as well as hate people, in such a short amount of time.
There were a few moments with jumpscares but it didn't take the atmosphere of "creepy" because they were so far and few in between.
Lots of times where I sat there looking at a section in disgust of the ship horrors.
My only down side was there was one moment where it was painstakingly unforgiving or bugged, I'm unsure.
I had to have extreme precision in my camera work to barely scrape through. I did get through it though after 3 failed attempts, which took my enjoyment in the moment quickly.
Even though that misfortune happened, I'll still rate it high because the experience overall was extremely enjoyable and memorable. I didn't complete it in one sit through so it sat in my mind heavily until I was able to get back into the game and finish it.

Incredible game, and its one of those games where I wish I could play it again for the first time.

The only things of note were the dialogue, voice acting, and the set pieces. Everything else was bad. I got scared maybe 2 times really, by lame jump scares that were immediately made null because the bad guy died right after. The monster designs are very, very weak. Trots especially was laughable and not scary at all. The gameplay was painfully linear, and for the last hour of it I was simply waiting for the game to end. There was also no real reason for Caz to do most of the stuff he did, one of the characters literally just said "I'm busy." and that sent Caz on another trip across the rig, it's just boring.

Liked the game.
Presentation is very nice with good visuals, great atmosphere, good animations and game feel, specially for the first person camera view.
It looks that you control a person and not a floating camera like some first person games.
Voice acting is fantastic and music do your job but nothing memorable.

Gameplay is simple and while it works fine, game presents all you are going to do very early and repeat till the end of the game.
Even so, the game and mission design was nice and being a short game ( between 4 or 6 hours) it didn’t presented as a tiresome game .
Some underwater moments gave me a bit of stress but I could manage to continue.
It had a nice length and didn’t overstayed his welcome.

Story was a bit of a let down , since it was a bit to predictable but even so was enjoyable to follow.

Overall a Good little story driven game with nice presentation and enjoyable to play till the end.
