The levels of choice the player has and the amount of branching story paths surprised me. After every chapter I'd go and see the alternate outcomes, and there would always be more than I expected. Throughout the game I was satisfied with all my decisions. I think that reflects well on the context clues the game feeds you if you're paying attention. My choices also felt significant, as did the quick time events. I purposely failed 2 and a character I didn't like ended up dying - now that's choice. I didn't feel pressured at any time to make a decision in any tailored direction. Also, I thought the story was quite good. It ends on a cliffhanger, though, with multiple questions unanswered, so I expect a sequel or at the least DLC in the future. I'd happily play it. Updated 1.5 Weeks Ago

As Dusk Falls is a fantastic game if you enjoy games such as Life is Strange and interactive movie games such as The Complex. It has a lot of choices you can make and actually seems to have some good branching to the story you can do. The game also does a good job of pacing and positioning. It bounces between characters and points in time a lot yet does so in a way that didn’t confuse me and actually ties things together nicely. There are also a decent amount of non dialogue game play such as QTE events, and searching the environment in a point and click manner. The music is very well done. One part that is weird and bound to ruffle feathers is the motion. The game isn’t still images or FMV. It is a weird hybrid that is kind of like watching an interactive comic book without the voice bubbles. It’s a decent style and certainly different but at the same time I can see how many people might think that the game is lagging or that there is some kind of glitch as the lips don't move with the audio. I thought so until I watched some Youtube videos and saw it was happening to others as well and was just normal. The game has good object detail such as on cars and buildings but seems to go for more of a comic book style look for people and it's a bit jarring at times. I can't tell if it's a lack of detail on people and clothing or if it just how it's supposed to look. I certainly hope the game gets a sequel as it leaves on a bit of a cliffhanger. There's enough closure to leave me pretty content but at the same time there's a few characters who I feel needed more of an epilogue or needed more time in the last book. For instance I wanted to know more about how Joyce's son Ash faired in the future parts as well as just what happened with Sheriff Romero. I could have even done with more explanation on what kind of journey that Paul and Sharon had. That being said I really enjoyed watching Zoe and Jay unfold and liked the options given there. The game has a great story map which has a very detailed layout of what route your story has taken while not spoiling what elements the the other routes would have introduced. There are also "insights" which are supposed to give you an insight into your play style but to be honest they were a little vague at times.I played As Dusk Falls on Linux using Wine and DXVK. The game is locked to 30 FPS. There are guides and tools to try to change this but I couldn't get them to work. They're made to work on Windows not Linux so whether that was the cause I don't know. In any case there is no excuse to lock games to 30 FPS on PC so people shouldn't have to resort to tools. The game has an auto save system. You can have multiple profiles each with their own save. I prefer manual save systems myself as it gives the user more freedom but at the same time this game does give you the ability to reload from certain points in the story map so it's not as bad as some games where you only get one save total. One plus I will say is at least the save points aren't spaced too far apart. There are six settings and a resolution option. You can reduce motion blur and depth of field but you can't turn them off which I find annoying as I dislike both. The game at least ran at a constant 30 FPS with no drops. I will say that it used far more VRAM than the visuals should have given their look. Luckily I had lots to spare so it wasn't an issue. I tried both keyboard and mouse and my Logitech F310 game pad and opted for the game pad. It worked with my F310 with zero issues and all button prompts showed up properly on screen. I had also played for a bit on an RX 590 which ran just as well as my 7800 XT so even older GPUs can do well here.
Game Engine: Unity
Graphics API: DXVK
Game Version Played: 1.01 (GOG)
Disk Space Used: 71GB
Input Used: Logitech F310
Game Settings Used: 2560x1440, small depth of field, high res textures enabled, shadow cascades on high, screen space reflection overkill
GPU Usage: 8-47 %
VRAM Usage: 3253-7252 MB
CPU Usage: 6-18 %
System RAM Usage: 3.4-5.6 GB
Frame Rate: Constant 30 FPS
My technical nitpicks aside I highly enjoyed my time with As Dusk Falls. While the story was left with a little too much unfinished at parts it was a great ride and even if there is never a sequel I am content. Few games I can think of can match the branching that they did. I finished my first play through in six hours and twenty one minutes. I paid $9.59 CAD for the game but would say it is easily worth it's current price tag of $33.89 CAD.
My System:

Really solid narrative game about two families' paths crossing during a motel hold-up. The art style is this cool comic-bookish stop-motion animation that I could watch all day. Your choices do matter and change outcomes for characters, most of whom can die. Sometimes, you'll roll your eyes at what characters do or say, especially during the hostage situation, but I found that the writing became stronger throughout the game. The one thing I would change is making the QTEs more engaging. As Dusk Falls has minimal interaction. You select dialogue prompts and occasionally press a button for a QTE--and I mean A button, like one, like same thing every time. Great for accessibility, but unsure why there wasn't an option to make this more engaging (aside from the speed). Regardless, thoroughly enjoyed this one.Updated 1 Month Ago

More of a "playable comic book" than a game per se (the entirety of the gameplay is QTE dialog and action choices), but the choices are often tense, and the story is engagingThe choices also have real consequences, and those who are inclined could get 2-3 playthroughs out of it to see all the stories play out

As Dusk Falls 8/10:- Great Story (keeps you entertained)
- The ending is open, doesn't make sense to end it at just that
- The ending doesn't change on the things that you choose; For example if you kill vince he will still appear at the end
- Feels like the characters don't have any emotion
- If you wanna explore other options you would have to start from the beginning, same issue as Detroit
- A lot of crashes for some reason while loading the latest save

As Dusk Falls. Experiencia unica con un estilo visual diferente. Genero: Aventura, interactiva.
Me tomo 7 horas completarlo.

I played almost 15 hours and completed the game twice. Don't know how long first playthrough was, only total time. I played through this twice with friends. There are quite a few games that are similar to this but as "choices matter" adventures go that you can play in multiplayer both off- and online, there's really only one other: The Dark Pictures. If you're like me and you're always looking for an adventure to play with friends than this is kind off a must have because it's slim pickings. Even if multiplayer is not a must for you, there's still much to like. The story is well written, the characters are well written as well, diverse and not one-dimensional (maybe two-dimensional). While it's not super original or anything, I for one couldn't guess what was next. The game looks really good imo, the static images might throw you off at first but I liked the more stylised 2D approach over the hyperrealism we're used to. Voice acting is top notch across the board (save for maybe one character, that I didn't like). The story kind of plays it safe in wanting to give casual players enough action and suspense to keep them engaged but it never went over the top. What surprised me the most is how many options there really are. Your choices really do matter and playing a second time to see more branching storylines really is worth doing. It's not something I see often in this genre and that's a damn shame. I think their choice of having a less demanding (2D) artstyle definitely helped here to create all the different paths (2D drawings take less time and resources to create than 3D environments after all) so I applaud that decision on all fronts. Given that this is the debut title of developer Interior/night I'd say it's quite impressive actually. I am very much looking forward to their next game. I hope it's in the same vein as this one and I hope they try to do something a bit more non-convensional for the story. I very much recommend this game for anyone remotely interested in the genre. Especially if you have friend(s) to play with.Updated 3 Months Ago

A good story, unique visual style but doesn't excel in the variants to the narrative, and fails in technical quality.I first played alone and had a way better experience, because I just hopped on my story and went until the end, had fun with the story, accepted my bad decisions and had a good experience.
But then I convinced my friends to play with me, that was hell, we went from
*Can't virtually host for many players to play on the same PC.
*Can't virtually host for people to play with the companion app.
*Everyone has to have the game and even then it depends on Microsofts servers to host a game and is horrible.
We spent HOURS, almost more time than the full gameplay, trying to play, and even when we had all copies, it was horrible to connect, and when we finally did, the inputs were giving trouble.
But technical problems aside, we had fun, although some of the "multiple choices" feel forced and somehow guide you to the same ending, there are some that can change the story, but I always feel like if you make a purely story game, that relies on you making choices, there HAS to be, a big difference between runs, but I understand how costly that can be.
In all a fun game.
7/10.

Super story game. Decision making was sometimes difficult and usually affected the end of the game. I was interested in the story until the end. The QTEs were light but sometimes insidious, so it wasn't all about fast button mashing. The characters were great and the plot twists were interesting and sometimes unexpected.

I'm all mixed up over this one, but I think it boils down to the fact that I wish I liked this game more than I did. I wish I enjoyed the writing more, then the story might have been more enjoyable. I wish I liked the overall aesthetic, then I'd be digging those slide transitions instead of waiting for them to end. There's nothing more disappointing than that glimmer of great potential that's often snuffed out by unsatisfying execution. https://abbysblog.net/blog/as-dusk-falls

As Dusk Falls is another in a long line of games that unsuccessfully attempts to make player choice-based storytelling work. It commits to it more than most, with the ability to influence every turn the story takes via these choices. This means bland characters because every character must be a vessel for player choice. This means underbaked plot because the writers must account for hundreds of permutations in this story. But worst of all, this means destroying any sense of cohesion in the story because threads go nowhere when you can unintentionally be locked out of them if you make a certain choice. It doesn't help that this story is extremely tropey, with little to add to any of these tropes.Funnily enough, while most people seem to dislike the visuals, for me it was the strongest part of the game. 2D pastel character stills in a 3D background is novel and visually pleasing. It also allows the developers to include some inspired camera shots and is a testament to the power of cinematography in video games (as strange as that may sound). However, this is a story game with an unenjoyable story. No amount of pretty visuals can change that, so I can't recommend this game, and the fact that it baited a sequel is a little insulting.

Não há nenhum desafio, mas se voce errar alguns quick time events isso também define a timeline que o jogo segue. A arte é interessante, mas não me atraiu os personagens estáticos como se fossem cartoons. Decision based story games have been continuing to grow in the market since the success of Telltale's The Walking Dead. Dontnod, Telltale, David Cage, and Supermassive Games have been releasing decision based games, making the genre start to feel bloated. However, As Dusk Falls, from developer Interior Night, doesn't do anything new to the genre but creates a great game through improving on what has come before. Decisions do feel like they matter, I even had a significant character die on my playthrough. When I first saw the artstyle, I kinda hated it, but when I actually played the game I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. I still don't think the artstyle is that great, but it's not terrible. Also major gripe is how large the file size for the game is. The game initially asked for a nearly 70 GB file size. The game also wraps itself up fairly nicely but then ends on a cliffhanger the last 20 seconds of the game. There is no announcement for if there is going to be a new game or just a DLC but the ending felt lacking.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

The game is like a balancing act. The key question is: do you shy away from the idiosyncratic presentation in the single frame visual novel style or do you overcome the unusual "no animation" style and get involved in the successful thriller story with good voiceovers? I managed the latter, the good voiceovers and the soundscape contribute to it.The gameplay remains very reduced, besides the decisions (crossroads) there are only QTE and a few hotspots to click on. Anyone who is open to such an interactive film adventure with a convincing and gripping story must definitely take a look.
The game is divided into 6 chapters, divided into 2 so-called books. I played a run through, but then looked at various other decisions and endings on YT. General replay value is very high in the game.
+ Story is kept very exciting and probably the biggest plus point
+ Crossroads choices heavily inspired by games like Life is Strange
+ detailed story tree overview after the chapters
+ good German voiceovers (English also good)
+ lots of hard-to-make 50/50 choices
+ Decisions have different effects
+ Various endings and high replay value
+ Cliffhanger at the end leaves room for speculation (and a sequel)
+ very serious topics and situations (especially in relation to Jay and his father)
- Art style with single images of actors in a 3D environment takes some getting used to, looks like a visual novel
- Reduced gameplay (QTE and occasional hotspots)
- second book may be stretched too far, but also has many great moments
- Chapter 6 unfortunately a bit lame at the beginning
- some unanswered questions
- some noticeable volume fluctuations on voiceovers, but doesn't happen extremely often
Gameplay: 5-6
Story: 9-10
Sound: 8-9
Presentation/Graphic: 6-7
