What could possibly result from the assembling of a Dream Team from Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Seiken Densetsu and a bunch of other monster sagas that all were reaching a peak at the time? Nowadays, it would be a gigantic, beautiful but probably a little boring AAA. Back then, it was a very deep and surprisingly humble game, telling a deep and surprisingly simple time-travel story with powerful mechanics and crazy loveable characters. Times changed, I guess...Updated 1 Week Ago

I can see why this game is heralded as one of the greatest RPGs of all time. The combat is fluid and requires actual strategy, but never gets frustratingly difficult. The story is captivating with a couple unexpected twists, and allows for many side stories that I actually felt compelled to pursue. The characters are charming, and I felt myself trying to switch out my party often to use all of them.I'm not sure how long it would have taken me if I didn't use a guide, though. Some sections were pretty vague in terms of trying to figure out where to go next.

Apenas jogue.

This game's way ahead of its time.Good
- interesting to hear monsters talking. Their dialogue is pretty amusing.
- being able to replace party members at any time is very convenient. Party members that are on the sidelines also scale in level, which is good because when you want to switch them in they won't be super underleveled.
- there's not too many buffs and debuffs which I personally like. It has the basic ones, which makes the game not too shallow and not too deep. Games like FF have so many buffs and debuffs, sometimes I lose track of them and it just get a little confusing.
- the battle animations are phenomenal for its time
- it's nice that they wrote dialog for each character so the cutscenes will still fuel organic no matter who you have in the party.
- I like the fact that KO'd teammates have 1 HP after battle. This way I don't have to waste a revive on them
- debuffs don't stick after battle. Don't have go into menu just to heal after. Saves time.
- really interesting enemies. Like snakes that absorb each other.
- before pokemon did the trainer line of sight battles, Chrono trigger did it. Those eye balls in the time egg chapter, you have to wait til they close their eyes if you want to avoid them. The rats in proto dome in lab 32, you have to dodge rats to not get stuff stolen from u.
- moving around during text box is great. Allows freedom to check out the area or leave without having to mash to the end.
- the menuing is very very fluent and informative, without being over complicated.
- button remap is really nice. Allows full customization.
- music is awesome
- Chrono trigger was way ahead of its time. With the battle system, with the menu layout, with wild encounters, with interesting environments interactions, and enemy types. And even story structure, the whole time travel aspect actually worked out pretty well, with surprises like magus being that kid from zeal, and being able to resurrect Chrono, and all those other characters that's came to the future whom you meet later on in the past. for a piece of media, not even just a video game, this was very innovative.
- different dialogue lines depending on who's with the party during cutscene
- seeing the game over scene after losing to lavos invokes a certain feeling.
Bad
- it's difficult to see the difference between second floor and first floor. As well as corridors that are behind walls. I know the SNES is quite primitive, but I still feel they could have done a better job. Maybe they could have added better Shadow sprites.
- I wish Chrono had dialogue. Mute protagonists can work but I don't think they did it well here. The other characters have plenty of dialogue, but they don't really interact with Chrono directly. When they refer to Chrono they say it in the way as if he isn't there. So most of the interactions in the cut scenes of the party makes it seem like Chrono is like a ghost. Which in turn makes me feel like a ghost. Mute protagonist is supposed to make you feel like you are in their shoes, and I am in the shoes of an empty husk. Link is an example of a mute protagonist done well. Other characters refer to him directly, and he does have to do nuisances like facial expressions, physical reactions.
- I felt they could have used maybe just a set of different variation of the reaction sprites. There's literally only one suprise sprite. Sometimes the char seem like they are overreacting cause the sprite is so dramatic.
- I couldn't go back to kingdom of zeal to get black rock, meaning eternal darkness tech was lost to me forever. I hate not being to back track to important things. I can understand an aesthetic item being missable, but not an item that allows me to learn one of the strongest spells in the game. Missed forever. After zeal fell, the Blackstone should still be attainable either somewhere else, or logically, I should be able to travel back in time, back before zeal fell, to attain black rock.

There comes a time in every fledgling video game enthusiast's life where they cast their eyes towards the past. It stands to reason that if you like video games, you'll want to play the best. And regardless of what you search or who you ask, a common response will begin to emerge: Chrono Trigger. Developed by a group of designers so prestigious they were referred to by Square as a "Dream Team," Chrono Trigger has been dominating top 10 lists and best-of charts ever since its SNES release. It's consistently referred to by many as the greatest game of all time. Playing it is considered almost a rite of passage into the 16-bit era. And yet, whenever a game is this celebrated, this universally praised, it's only natural to have some apprehension. After all, these best-of lists can turn into a sort of self-perpetuating cycle where everyone knows the game is supposed to be good, but might only be ranking it highly due to its prestige. It's important, then, to experience these games yourself, to find what has held up and what hasn't, and—in Chrono Trigger's case—to discover a true masterwork of RPG design.By 1995, Square had practically mastered their Active Time Battle mode with Final Fantasy, and yet Chrono Trigger's combat system is still incredibly unique; each battle has predetermined layouts where your character positions matter, and timing is everything. Each character pairing also has specific tech moves that combine their turns into one powerful move, and it's fantastic to consider how each new tech affects what your party is capable of and how you tackle further challenges down the road. Each battle forces you to think on your feet and ensures you're rarely doing the same thing twice, so adaptability is paramount. And while that sounds complicated, one of CT's most impressive features is its accessibility; it's a deceptively simple title that makes for an incredible introduction to the RPG genre. Your team always seems to be at the right level; endgame weapons and techs are unlocked through normal play instead of tedious grinding, and the battle speed can be adjusted for those who prefer slower-paced combat.
In truth, the only negative in Chrono Trigger's design is that its combat tools are a little too generous, and as a result, there are some dungeons where combat can get a little redundant. But the reason this is even noticeable is because CT's pacing is, for the vast majority of the game, immaculate. This is a game famous for its multiple endings, optional side quests, and hidden details, and a full 100% playthrough, even if it's your first time, will clock in around the 20-hour mark. Even for RPGs in 1995, that was pretty brisk; now? Chrono Trigger represents tremendous value for time. No plot point feels tacked on—immensely impressive for a game about time travel—and every part of the game is the good part.
Chrono Trigger is, at its core, a game about confrontation of one's past, challenging one's own fate, and making improvements for the future. The party's quest is to defeat Lavos and stop the end of the world, sure, but the party's journey is one of self-reflection and atonement. As such, Chrono Trigger is intent on making sure you know your actions matter, and it does this early on with a trial scene that is equal parts surprising and brilliant. The way CT teaches you things without explicitly saying them is tremendous, and from then on, you're trained to always consider how you can change the future—and the past—for the better. It's incredibly satisfying to see even the smallest action pay off and subconsciously pushes you to explore the world more, searching throughout time for an ailment to every malady.
Each character (except perhaps Ayla) has their own journey of flaws and redemption as well, and they are full of poignant or epic moments all while offering something unique. Frog's tale of revenge turned to acceptance is epic and inspiring, while Lucca & Robo's is a poignant story about what it means to be human. Each character is given their moment to shine, and the fact that a game about time travelers fighting a mysterious force that threatens to destroy the world can balance these more grounded aspects so well without feeling bloated, and can fit it all into 20 hours without feeling rushed, is a tremendously impressive achievement.
As cliché as it is to say, Chrono Trigger truly is a timeless game. Its incredible pixel work and soundtrack ensure that it will never age poorly. Its wealth of genre-defining ideas—the ability to fight the final boss at any time, the multiple endings, the worlds in different times—ensure that it will be forever an inspiration for classics already made and classics yet to come. And its gameplay and themes ensure that when players discover it in the future, they won't be disappointed. And while Chrono Trigger's word-of-mouth reputation will ensure it is always relevant, its everlasting design will ensure it is always brilliant—then, now, and forever.

Chrono Trigger still stays fresh after almost 30 years since the release. It has kind of unique flavor of time-travel done well, fantasy setting, great pseudo-turn based with ATB system, innovative system of dual and triple attacks depending on who do you have in a party. That all blends exceptionally well with one of the best soundtracks in the video games history from Mitsuda and Uematsu. Playing the game and traveling through different eras, the player has the feeling that the things we did in the past really matter in the future. Even after the 3 decades, the game feels like it could be released now and still be very good. The DS version unclutters a screen and makes it look even better. The situation that we have a Chrono Cross port on Nintendo Switch, and not Chrono Trigger is criminal.Updated 1 Month Ago

I can't believe I waited so long to play this game. Everything is fantastic. Writing, sound design, visuals and gameplay were all on point. I loved all the characters and each of them were well fleshed out. Getting all the ultimate weapons was fun and it added a lot of context to each individuals story.Battle mechanics are cutting edge for the time. Being able to combine attacks with 2 to 3 party members really brought everything together.
This game is a solid 10 and I get why it is such a loved and well revered game.

My absolute favorite game. This is the 4th system (DS) I’ve played and beaten the game on multiple times and I actually enjoy the experience greatly over the mobile and PlayStation ports. I wish I could have played this game without the expectations. I heard so much about how Chrono Trigger's gameplay is amazing, how revolutionary it was, how great the story is, how it's the best jRPG ever made, and how it's literally perfect.
And don't get me wrong. Chrono Trigger is a great game and was certainly one of the best games ever made at the time of its release...
But it's nowhere near the "everyone must experience this game" status for me.
To start with what I like - the music, combat and pacing were fantastic back in 1995 and are still fantastic today. The graphics and premise of the story have aged, but you can see how great they were at the time.
The only thing that doesn't hold up to the praise is... The story. Don't get me wrong, it's completely fine, maybe even good, but "great"? Nah, chief. Maybe for the standards of 1995 videogames, but not today. The dialogue (at least in the original SNES translation) is pretty bad and often detracts from the gravity of situations happening on the screen, making it really hard to get attached to the characters on the screen.
I also don't get people trying to describe any deeper themes to this story. It's a fun little save the world time travel adventure, but little more than that.
That said... This review sounds pretty negative, as I feel the need to justify only giving this game an 8.5 despite it's legendary status. Don't let that detract you from the fact that I enjoyed my time with Chrono Trigger a hell of a lot. The fast pacing, the different locations and time periods, the combat, the music, all of them made for an adventure that never felt like it's wasting my time. The fact that it didn't "change my life" like people thought it would does not mean I wouldn't play it again. I absolutely would, I had a lot of fun.

An excellent JRPG.It might be the earliest JRPG I've played that essentially dropped random encounters, replacing them by enemies you can see in advance. This was an excellent change that removed the annoyance you could feel from being "interrupted" by combat. Absolutely fantastic music and the very classic and unique artstyle from Akira Toriyama (RIP).
The story is great and the element of time travel is implemented well. I like the characters a lot and how they all have their own relevance to the story. The dual and triple techs are a great mechanic that makes switching out party members very impactful. The world was done well too. It was very cool to see the same areas through the ages and how things changed.

Chrono Trigger is probably one of the best games ever made, and it is definitely one of the best JRPG ever made. The way it handles time travel is unique, fun, and somehow not that confusing to wrap your head around. It does minor things so well with the core theme of time travel, such as heading back in time to manipulate events for side quests. It does a lot of interesting things that you don't see in many games honestly, and the gameplay is actually fun to boot. Also unlike a lot of old JRPGs, I didn't feel like I needed a walkthrough for a majority of the game, and 70% of the time I was able to do things. (I'm glad I did have a walkthrough though, so I could take advantage of those Sealed Chests optimally)I don't have any problems with Chrono Trigger, but I suppose my main critique would be that I wasn't really in love with any of the party members. I like them, but they aren't as engaging as even other old JRPGs. But I don't think it detracts enough from the game to really give it flak for that.
I also have issues with the PC port but I can't dock points from the game itself. I had to revert to a 2018 build because the 2023 build has a weird stuttering bug when you walk diagonally. The port also doesn't have proper button prompts for PlayStation controllers, so I wasn't sure what to press at some points of the game. When it came to the part where you have to play Simon Says in the fair to get (spoiler item) I kept failing and just grinded for 60K to buy it instead.
But even that doesn't change the fact that Chrono Trigger is one of the greats and a must-play JRPG.

Just like Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger is frequently regarded as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time.As someone who hasn't played Chrono Trigger before, I was blown away at how this game still holds up to this day.
The story in Chrono Trigger impressed me because even though the premise is simple, the concept is really cool, the goal is clear from the beginning and there are many different ways to approach it, and the pacing is consistent since the game isn't very long nor difficult, so there's no need for grinding at all.
The gameplay impressed me even more; it's not very complex, but it's enjoyable, it looks flashy and it doesn't feel outdated at all; quite the opposite actually.
The characters are charming and engaging enough, not necessarily the best, but good nonetheless.
Also, the visuals and the music are both really great and they hold up incredibly well.
Something I really appreciated in Chrono Trigger personally is the lack of random encounters; it's an awesome quality of life improvement for the genre in my opinion and I wish more older JRPGs did that.
Overall, I got to say, Chrono Trigger is pretty much flawless; I wish the final boss battle was implemented slightly better because it lacks build-up, but it's not a big deal. Other than that, I don't have anything negative to say about the game.
Pros:
+ Well-paced and engaging story
+ Fun combat system
+ Likable characters
+ Very nice visuals and music
+ No random encounters or need for grinding
Cons:
- None
Narrative: 6/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Content: 8/10
Characters: 7/10
Music: 9/10
Graphics/Audio: ?/10
Final Rating: 9/10
- Amazing -
Simply put, Chrono Trigger is... timeless.
Okay, enough with the puns. Chrono Trigger doesn't necessarily excel at anything, however, it does everything right.
Do I recommend it?:
Chrono Trigger is an easy game to recommend, not only because it's a very good game even to this day, but because it's so accessible, even people who don't enjoy playing RPGs will have fun with this game.

9.5/10A Timeless Classic for a reason. Chrono Trigger stands with Final Fantasy VI as the golden JRPGs of that console, and maybe the golden titles of the SNES period. Playing through the game, it is easy to see why it is so loved, and with the added cutscenes, it adds so much to this game that I wonder how some sequences were even experienced without them, even if some of them are just the same sequence but instead animated to emphasize their importance.
Story
A surprisingly more complex story that I would had imagined going in, especially for a SNES game. It is a repeated tune, but the themes of existential crisis, not sitting down and accepting "fate", and of course themes around the idea of time travel, with the benefits and of course, consequences. You focus on going through all the time eras, finding out your fate due to lavos, and finding companions who tie their story to lavos as well. With how complex time travel can get, Chrono Trigger knows how to have the complexity of time travel, without overdoing it and causing a confusing mayhem that ends up harming the story more than it benefits it, as it is pretty simple to understand how the time travel works with past affecting future, changing the past changes the future, and changing the future does not change the future, but having future knowledge can help you change the present or past. There is no meeting past self (kinda), and other time plots that convolute the story, which is amazing. Considering how short this game is for a JRPG, the pacing is excellent. The game does start to falter a TINY bit towards the end, but is able to make a great conclusion. It also helps that the side quests in this game are just amazing, as they each focus on each character, and have great character developments that make each and every single one of them worth playing through. Its really hard to point at issues with the story for this game, if I had to consider ANY, it is the tiny pacing issues toward with the end which lands greatly, some of the sidequests were a bit out there to understand who to solve them, anddddd I guess I was a bit confused how the multiple endings were at first, only to realize that the most obvious one is the best ,and the other endings are gotten through actions taken during the playthrough instead.
Characters
All of the cast were done excellent. Each of the characters have their own arc that all ties in together. Each of the characters represent the time era they were in, both good and bad considering the future that lavos created. The main character, Crono, is of course a silent protagonist who is designed to be a self insert, but brave character, which works considering the era it was set in. The other characters were all written so well, as Marle, the princess turned love interest, has an interesting story not only tying with cronos and of course her ancestory, but also her family struggles with her father who both struggle to accept the death of their Mother, and finally accepting and realizing how much they care for each other. Lucca's arc as well is just excellent, who ESPECIALLY gets one of the best scenes thanks to the excellent side quests in this game, and of course her inventions that allowed time travel to begin with for cronos and the group (even if it was fate that gave them the opportunity). Frog's arc and his rivalry with Magus (and depending on your choice, his redemption or acceptance), were just amazing, especially with his struggle as the human Glenn and accepting to become the hero that his previous companion sought out to be. Robo at first didn't seem that crazy, but his side quest fleshes him out way more and makes him another interesting character in the group. Ayla is also very interesting, but is probably the weaker one considering that she lacks an interesting side quest, which the other characters get, giving them the fleshed out development they needed. Magus finally after finding out who he is was a joy to experience, and while he is a bit sidelined with some story beats, his dialogue as he has a more personal connection with Zeal and lavos made him a worthy (and very strong) companion. It is insane how well done these characters are done, and not only are fleshed out throughout the game, but with how amazing the side quests are, makes them the fleshed out cast that everyone knows of, even if not all side quest developments were made equal, they are still all amazing. Each of the character experience existential crisis, especially frog and marle (and Lucca as well... and Robo as he is tossed out of the "Pure Robot" species), and it is an excellent common theme of the characters.
Gameplay
This was a surprise to me. The system revolves around the usual ATB system seen in previous FF games, but this time uses positioning as a key part of the combat as other turn based systems similar to this have either attack one, or all, instead this game contains move that only attack if the enemy are together.

Chrono Trigger is an absolutely gem in the RPG world where you get to immerse yourself in a game digitally drawn by Akira Toriyama. Story - The story is well written, engages you in every part. Every character is well drawn, thanks to Akira Toriyama, be it an evil character that looks evil or a good character that would save the world.
Combat - Turn-based battle, however, is fast-paced and it does not wait for you. Boss battles are memorable.
All in all, If you are a fan of Akira's work (Dragonball, Sand Land, Dr. Slump, etc) like me, you will definitely enjoy this game.

I started playing this game recently just because it's only availalbe for SNES so no modern ports available. Mobile version was not very comfortable so I emulated it on Switch. The sountrack made it's impression the moment I stepped in the fair and they just keep coming.
I don't play lots of JRPG/RPG so the battling mechanic was a bit weird at first since little to no tutorial is present in the game and there was some confusion regarding enemies that kept attacking during my turn when I had picked the WAIT mode, but now it's more manageable as I got used to it and it's not that bad.
Still regarding the combat system, it's probably the first time that I see something like this which is nice for a change.
The game feels balanced overall, you have a character that can heal and you get plenty of potions in chests as you explore. Though one lame thing about exploring is monsters that keep spawning after you defeat them.
Fully healing the team is not as much of a luxury as I thought at the beginning, as it costs only 10 to rest at the inns and you get more than that just by defeating 1 monster.
I called the first plot twist before the in-game characters did. It was made quite apparent after the gossip guy kept telling me the same thing exactly where I met the person.
Also for the 80 sliver points game, you don't have to walk to complete it (hold B).

At first I thought this game wasn't really for me, but the more I played it I became more attached to it. The music is great. The progression is impeccable. The combat is fine and not super time consuming. I've gotten genuinely caught off guard by some of the bosses that have been shown up and that's been a nice change of pace. It seems to be a well-put together JRPG that cuts out a lot of the extra BS out. Then the story comes into play. At first it seemed kinda run-of-the-mill, time travel sci-fi stuff. But then it really started to play with some cool ideas. And to help it along, the game developed some amazing characters. They were kinda shallow at first, but you discover bits and pieces about each one as time goes on that really pulls you into them. This development peaked for me with the campfire scene. If you know, then you know. Robo became a favorite for me. A machine that ends up learning to feel and become attached to humans. All this pulls together after a big twist of the game, and culminates to a climactic final battle. The mechanics of which were also new and refreshing. Once the day is saved, it's time for a goodbye with all your party members and the goodbye from Robo broke my heart. I now understand why this game has become one of the most beloved JRPGs of all time. I'm glad to have played this and would definitely play it again.Updated 6 Months Ago

A história é o ponto forte.
Pontos fortes
A história é absurda de boa.
Gameplay gostosa.
Gráficos lindos pra era 16 bits
A versão do ds é muito boa.
Magias de encher a tela.
Desafio no limite do maravilhoso
Pontos fracos
Kd meu Remake?

Pretty awesome! One of the best looking games I've ever played, and the gameplay is incredible. I wish the story/characters was a little more fleshed out without the side stuff, but it's still an awesome game.Updated 6.5 Months Ago

Updated 9 Months Ago

My favourite game of all time! My name is based off an attack in this game, haha. What Chrono Trigger did that was so revolutionary with a story in a game wasn't some mind fuckery incredible plot twist, or heavy themes that it executed on well, it was its pacing and replayabilty with its multiple endings. At no point in the plot did I ever feel bored, or found myself skipping dialogue for the sake of "going through the motions," I was hooked, I wanted to know what happened next, I didn't want to put this game down. Likable cast of characters with wonderful character arcs (Robo and Frog in particular), a time travel plot that didn't really have too many plotholes, and a beautiful message that you should always be able to try and change what you can control in your life and to accept that you can't always control everything.
Lavos is techically the main villain of the game, but he's kinda just the apocalypse, lol. I'd consider Queen Zeal to be the main villain of the game, and I thought she was a fantastic villain. Her descent into insanity from getting drunk off power was a little disturbing, especially after the reveal that Janus/Magus is her son and part of the reason why he's also kinda fucked up.
The world and its setting was fantastic, I loved exploring all the different time periods and seeing what was different about them. The fact that items maturing was a gameplay mechanic was cool as fuck too. Combat was a unique take on Square's tried and true FF style, with techs replacing magic and other miscellaneous abilities and it was always interesting to see how your characters could link up. If you've played other JRPGs though, you should take to it like a fish in water.
The OST of the game is one of my favourite ever, Wind Scene in particular never fails to send a wave of nostalgia through me. I think that's what makes it such a special game too - the fact that it just does everything excellently. Plot, gameplay, music, characters, it has it all. A game that has such an incredible amount of charm and a strange feeling of melancholy whenever I replay it, it's an absolute masterpiece.
