My second favorite game of all time and for good reason. This game is just almost perfect outside of some weak story beats and I will constantly be replaying it. The game that made me fall in love with the Persona series and Atlus as a developer. It's just damn great and probably the best modern RPG out right now, Baldurs Gate 3 can suck this games goddamn nuts, I see myself wanting to come back to Tokyo with the Phantom Thieves than Faerun with the fuck up gang.Updated 1.5 Days Ago

- Fantastic story.- Exciting combat mechanics.
- Confidants are exciting w/ additional skills to motivate levelling up.
- Killer sound track that never gets boring.
- Fascinating dive into philosophical regarding identity & societal reform, with final antagonist being sympathetic and well written.
- Inclusion of DLC (now free) can result in an already simple game being made even easier. Would advise not using DLC personas if you want bosses to remain challenging & require strategy, though ultimately up to what you want out of the experience.
- Consequently, due to game seeminly getting easier as you progress regardless of DLC or not, gameplay loop (castles / mementos) can sometimes drag on a little bit, though not to the point of lasting impact.

If not for one thing that isn't even the game's fault, P5R would have a 100% rating:I'd already been spoiled long ago.
The original localized release was in 2017 as a PS3/4 exclusive. I desperately hoped that it would be release on PC or Switch, but no dice. I waited a year or so and then somewhat spoiled myself on a lot of the content in the game. Not all of it, of course. Then P5 Royal release in 2019. Again, no release on other platforms. I had played the previous Persona games through PS2 emulation, and the thought of buying an entirely new console just to play a SINGLE game was absurd. And so, reluctantly, I gave up on ever playing it. Even if I wasn't going out of my way to search them up, it was just the cultural osmosis of Persona 5 memes and references that I eventually got spoiled.
2022 was when my wish finally came through for a Switch/PC release.
And shockingly, despite me being spoiled on SO many things of the game, I STILL enjoyed it.
Music is amazing and the game oozes style out of every pore. Just the mere act of opening up the menu and navigating it is slick. The characters are all lovable. The improvements to the gameplay are fantastic. Ranking up confidants unlocks completely new gameplay bonuses that fit each character, some of which are literally game-changing (Swap members mid-fight, explore at night after dungeon crawling, gun bullets inflict status effects, and many more). Each Persona has a passive Trait ability. Dungeons are probably the best in the genre. It's no mainline SMT game, but it's still very fun.
Story is great at the start, starts to lose steam midway through cause new targets of the Phantom Thieves are just not as compelling as Kamoshida, then picks back up with the whole Maruki plotline, who is undoubtedly the best villain of the entire game. In most media, I find that the best villains are the ones who see themselves as the hero, and Maruki fits right in with the rest of them. The final palace really cements the themes of the entire game.
The game gives many options to choose from, which lends itself really well to Challenge runs where I make handicaps to make the game much harder for myself.
Alongside a mod that reworks party member moves a bit to fit each character more and increase all enemy HP by 100% every 10 levels capping out at 1000% bonus HP on Hard Difficulty, my rules included:
Fair Fights:
No Ambushes, EXCEPT:
1a. On Red enemies
1b. When above 90% alert
1c. When Ambush from above.
1d. All-Out Attacks banned EXCEPT on Bosses. Can use ONCE on Red enemies
1e. Max Level = Palace Boss Level
1f. No repeat Showtimes
1g. Charge/Focus only during Baton Pass
Stamina Mode:
2a. No SP Items in dungeons AT ALL. Can use Heal items in Safe Rooms
2b. Each character can each use ONE item per battle. Revives don't count towards uses.
2c. Max Revives carry limit per infiltration = 5. If you find more revives during infiltration, sell excess once done with infiltration.
Limited Fusions:
Cannot fuse Personas, EXCEPT:
3a. Must fuse immediately after finding a Safe Room, can only Fuse a single Persona per safe room.
3b. Fused Personas cannot inherit new Traits.
3c. Fused Persona have Max of 2 different Elements (Physical/Almighty don't count towards this)
3d. Compendium banned EXCEPT Compendium/Fusions for Twins don't count but must immediately delete new Persona
3e. Arsene can inherit Growth 3 ASAP (Through DLC or other methods)
3f. Arsene can inherit stronger tier of Curse magic based on strongest tier of magic learned by party members
Imperfect Guard:
5a. No Drain/Repel/Null Weakness Skills, only Evade.
5b. Can't fuse Persona that have Void Phys
5c. Can capture Persona with Void Physical in a Palace, but must get rid of it after end of Palace (fuse/itemize/gallow)
5d. Cannot use Skill Cards on Persona with Void Physical
All of these made the game much more difficult, but still completely manageable and I enjoyed the game way more. It forced me to think up new strategies.
Other than minor complaints about the early pacing, Haru feeling like an afterthought of a character who comes in too late, Sumire feeling abit too forced into being a Phantom Thief, game being too easy (which I fixed with my challenge run), game could've been a bit shorter, I absolutely LOVED the game. For me, Persona games aren't really about the story, it's about the vibe. I didn't binge this game at all, and neither did I for Persona 3/4. Just playing it a little bit every night made it basically a daily routine for me. It was something I could look forward to regardless of what happened in my daily life.
I'm glad that ATLUS is catching W after W recently. We already know that they're working on Persona 6. So just like everyone else, I cannot wait for it. It looks like Metaphor: ReFantazio is going to be a mix of Persona and SMT gameplay wise, so I'm excited for that as well. Just give us a new Etrian Odyssey.
TL;DR
One of the best JRPGs ever.

One of the best games I have ever played. The presentation of the game is top-notch, even the pause menu and combat menu are a joy to look at. The story is full of twists and turns, interesting characters and excellent voice acting. Despite its length I never felt like the story was a drag. One of the gripes I have is that it felt easy to miss the royal content as someone who has never played the original. I like the way the game paces itself between a lot of action and combat in the palaces and the relaxing day-to-day student life. Each palace was also very unique and fitting of the characters. The combat system works well and remains fun throughout the game. Finally the music is excellent in this game and I really enjoy that throughout the game new songs are heard for the first time. This really emphasizes the theme and story of the palaces.Updated 2 Weeks Ago

Starting the game on a whim cause I liked the art style I found that there was much more than just the art style that I liked. The game has one of the smoothest cleanest turn-based systems in all the turn-based RPGs I've played, which although aren't many completely triumph over them. The game has one of the most brilliant OSTs I've listened to which has me listening to it for months after I've beaten the game accompanied by one of the most interesting and thought-provoking stories I've had the pleasure of experiencing through the Royal expansion of the gameUpdated 2 Weeks Ago

After 4 years and 4 entire playthroughs I've reached the end of the game. From Game saves deleting; To Remakes coming out The conclusion I've reached for this game is that it was stellar. Compliments:
-Soundtrack: AMAZING obviously nothings more to say
-Characters: Truly hit or miss but for the ones I loved I really loved
- gameplay: BEAUTIFUL I just love turn based combat and when its stylized like this I just don't know what to say
- Style: BEAUTIFUL nothing shy from perfect.
Complaints:
- The final Boss for the true ending feels near impossible to defeat as he heals stupidly and you must damage him
-The DLC: Royal gives you all the dlc from the prior game which is cool and all but when that dlc lets you One shot anyone who breaths for 5 palaces straight it becomes an issue. The existence of them makes the actual combat extremely easy which to new players will probably not pay much head to. The fact people don't know the true pain of okumuras palace baffles me.

There are so many things to love about P5R that I don't know where to start...- strong story reminiscent from the best supernatural teen dramas, with corrupted adults (or weird, or too serious, or totally lost) and a bunch of teenager ready to save the world.
- cool characters, with deep backstories, always flirting with clichés but never falling for it.
- awesome level design, all dungeons are absolutely crazy.
- great mechanics and smart way to implement them. The loading screen screams "take your time" and that's exactly what the game does, by revealing systems or giving new stuff all throughout the story instead of losing itself in some confusing and endless tutorial. There's always something to learn or discover, that's a true pleasure. P5R is far from your classic JRPG that gives you all the basics during the first three hours and then let you farm (I love that too, but it's cool to find something as different and refreshing).
So why only 9.5 over 10? Well, P5R has a few flaws going with its qualities :
- first of all, it's good because it's long and it had to be long to be that good, but it's still too long. Around 70-80H (depending on the players), it starts to feel like a job. You have most confidents unlocked, one or two skills pushed to the max and you know what to do (or not) in almost every situation.
- matter of fact, the game can have a hard time handling the rythm of its story. There are many fillers or awkward foreshadowing, which is a shame because the writing in its whole is really impressive.
- music is great... for a 50-60H long game. A 100H hours later, well... not that much.
- as a so-called definitive edition to Persona 5, it has to put stuff everywhere, all the time, but some of them are not really captivating. The most obvious example is the whole Yoshizawa story-arc, not very interesting, pure DLC material, I don't even have to fact check this to be 99% sure this wasn't in the base game.
- the Memento is just a big... something, devoid from any real purpose. It's longer than eternity and not very rewarding.
- boss fights are mostly lame. Best case scenario, they're not fun and way too long. Worst case scenario is Okumura boss fight, an endless joykiller requiring at least 5 or 6 tries even if you've found out the good strategy in the first place, and being, for absolutely no reason, the only point in the whole game where you have to farm. And hope for good luck.
So long story short : yes, P5R is a great game that deserves all its cult aura, but there's a little something restraining me from giving it a 10/10. I think this rank have to be kept for games I deeply love no matter how flawed they are (not the case here), or, on the other hand, games that are so good that they are must-plays for any player, regardless its usual taste. Despite how accessible it can be, P5R is not, in my opinion, a game for everyone. I've really enjoyed my playthrough, but I totally can see how and why someone could hate this game.

Good turnbased JRPG, its not my type of a genre, i played like 30 of them and this is a good one. I like the art style its unique and stylish and the music is a banger, the combat is simple but it does the work, my only gripe is that the story has a lot of filler and boring pacing. I enjoyed the first, fourth and sixth dungeons but the others were such a slog honestly.Still a good game.

I debated about whether or not I should giver this game a 9/10 or a 10/10 because while I enjoyed this game so much, there are still some issues that are apparent. Realistically I would give this game a 9.5/10. Let's talk about the good first. The graphics style is so incredibly nice, everything is so nice to look at and it genuinely never got boring to look at. The dialogue is pretty cheesy at times but its still really well made, you really end up falling in love with the characters, it really makes you feel like you're apart of the friend group. This game clearly did something incredibly well for it to keep my attention for over 90 hours. Now let's talk about the somewhat bad. I think the game probably is too long, there were a couple times near the middle of the game where I was getting quite bored of the repetitiveness of the combat and the story and I would have to push myself to continue playing. Now I do believe that is completely made up for by the content towards the end of the game but it didn't feel the greatest while I was playing. I feel like some of the characters probably could have been written a bit 'better', but I can't really complain too much. Overall this game is simply incredible. I love everything about the cut scenes as well. I can tell I will definitely think about this game for years to come.

My late start to a wonderful Franchise.Grabbed it because of a recommendation of a friend and enjoyed nearly any second of it.
Just some tiny moments bothered me throughout the playthrough. Some presentation wise and some gameplay wise (e.g.fight against Okumura)
But that's nitpicking. All in all a great game, I would recommend to anyone who can enjoy a more relaxed game where time is your hardest enemy ;)

The aesthetic and style this game exudes is completely unmatched, absolutely top-notch. Best presentation I've ever seen in a video game.Switch port is also fantastic. Sure it isn't as pretty as it is on other platforms/consoles, but I'd take portability over a higher resolution any day of the week especially for an extremely long JRPG.

I previously wrote a review and deleted it. To begin with, Persona 5 Royal is an experience that resonates with the most youthful part of any player. There in, lies its greatest strength, and at times, its worst flaw. The fact that the game believes in the messages that it gives, makes it feel genuine even if sometimes some resolutions within the story are simplistic or overly idealized.I have my problems with the fact that the story has been handled within such a realistic context for the most part of the game, where the main antagonist was a corrupt politician, and suddenly it becomes a mythical ode to save the world from an omniscient deity associated with the heart of the entire world. I also still think that to some extent the last castle feels like an addition to the story that really wasn't necessary.
However, I have to say that with everything and the problems that I have seen, I have also been able to find a story full of charismatic characters, which combines saving the world with the mundane life of teenagers going to school, while teaching the value of building relationships social. In some ways it's all very basic and simple, but it also feels very genuine and pleasant, so much so that even being aware of how corny or silly the writing is at times, you can't help but smile.
Finally, I feel that the game has an excellent ending and highlights many of the themes that had been discussed. In a sense it is true that in the last section the story returns to its core, social relations and leaves aside the fight against the great villain. I still think that Persona 5 in its two versions is one of those stories that benefits much more from the game format due to its interactivity, and that adapting it to an anime or any other medium would greatly deteriorate the result.
However, what I am evaluating here is agame, and as it is, I have nothing to say that... TAKE YOUR TIME.

Persona 5 Royal wasn't just a game for me; it was a lifeline. Coming into it when I was at a crossroads offered a welcome escape and a way to make sense of my struggles. For that reason alone, it's a masterpiece in my book. One that I can never objectively score.Soundtrack steals the show
As expected, Shoji Meguro's music magic shines brightest in this game. Every track fits the scene perfectly. Need a battle pump-up? There's "Take Over." Feeling introspective? "Beneath the Mask" has you covered. And that building tension during Joker's grudge match with "Rivers in the Desert" playing in the background? Gave me chills. It's flawless. The way they use jazz to bring this world to life is incredible, a bit like Cowboy Bebop. You wouldn't think jazz would work, but it totally does!
Style with substance (mostly)
Persona 5 Royal is dripping with style, that's for sure. The menus are sleek, managing your stuff is fun, and even the animation of days passing by has personality. Atlus flipped the script on menu-heavy RPGs, making navigating the game a joy.
That said, the pacing can be rough. The game constantly tells you to "Take your time," which feels like a plea to both player and story. Don't get me wrong, I loved the dungeon variety, which was a welcome change from the monotony in previous Persona games. But honestly, some could have been cut without hurting the story. Even though messing around in zero gravity was pretty cool, venturing into the Spaceport palace felt unnecessary.
Slowdown aside, I enjoyed the story. Sure, it drags a bit in the middle, but the payoff is worth it. The new third-semester stuff is fantastic, really hammering home the game's themes: facing challenges head-on, being true to yourself, and defying expectations. Maybe it was because I was dealing with trust issues myself then, but the storybeats struck a chord with me on a deeper level. It wasn't just entertainment. It felt satisfyingly cathartic.
A colourful crew
The Phantom Thieves themselves are a great bunch. Maybe there are a few too many of them, making it harder to juggle stats and social link upkeep. But character bloat aside, I still loved these rebels. Their fight to break free from societal expectations really resonated with me. Especially Joker – seeing this dorky dude transform into a stylish Phantom Thief is awesome. It embodies the game's whole "personas" (your inner self) theme well. Each character shines brightest when they're battling shadows with their Personas. As an introvert, I connected strongly with Futaba, and Makoto's struggle to find her identity felt familiar too. Then you've got guys like Goro Akechi and Dr. Maruki, who add even more complexity to this already vibrant cast.
Flashy meets finesse
Persona 5 Royal strikes the perfect balance between stylish combat and smooth functionality. The battle menus are gorgeous and clear, putting all the crucial info at your fingertips. Every action feels impactful, and there's immense satisfaction that comes from pulling off a well-planned strategy. The combat system rewards clever tactics with massive damage thanks to mechanics like "One More" attacks. To top it all off, the flashy Showtimes add another layer of exhilarating spectacle.
A long but rewarding journey
If you're up for a long haul, Persona 5 Royal is a fantastic experience. It perfectly blends conquering dungeons with a really engaging social sim. Atlus absolutely nailed the timing of switching between gameplay elements, keeping things fresh. And trust me, all that time you put in is worth it. Despite its length, there's a surprising economy to your time. Since building social links strengthens you in battles, all the game mechanics feed into each other well. It's a game where everything just clicks, and more importantly, it's a stylishly good time.

It took me a month to beat Okamura (put it on Merciless). I dropped it to Easy for Wakaba. Maruki's ending is not bad if you don't think about the fact that you're trapping your friends in a fake world against their wills.
