A good, "bottle episode"-d kind of adventure, with a dramatically different pacing & adventure type than DA:O. That said, some of the new things it tries do, in fact, work pretty well (—and, then again, other aspects not so much.) Overall, another ultimately-enjoyable Thedas experience.Updated 2 Months Ago

In my opinion, it is a very mediocre GAME. However, as a STORY, it has a right to exist. The main storyline and the quests of the companions that I liked, I went through with pleasure, as they are quite interesting. Initially, I also did the additional quests, but I quickly got tired of them, even though a couple of them were interesting. Therefore, I abandoned doing the additional quests quite early. I didn't even try to play the DLCs. And halfway through the game, I was ready to abandon it entirely, but I confess that I downloaded a couple of cheat mods (to speed up running outside of combat, because I got sick of running back and forth so much, and to simplify the combat, because even on easy difficulty, the combat irritated me with its crudeness) and then the experience became much more enjoyable. In general, the horrible combat and poor game design overall, due to the identical (LITERALLY) dungeons and constant stupid running and fights, very much spoiled the impression. The only thing I can really praise, other than the story, is the consequences. Your actions have consequences. You see the consequences of your actions, you understand that sometimes you made the right choice or, on the contrary, made a mistake. You feel this, and it's great. I thought for a long time about how I feel about this game... And I decided that despite all the shortcomings, I will give it a 7/10. BUT only because of the mods that allowed me to enjoy the story, rather than wasting time on nonsense.Updated 4.5 Months Ago

It's a decent game, but nothing in comparison to DA:O I think. + combat feels good, more action oriented than the original
+ I liked the companions and their stories
- combat feels bad, because of spawning waves of enemies
- the overall story wasn't very clear to me (maybe I shoud have read more codex entries)
- the world feels small
Again: it's a decent enough game, but it's nowhere close to the original.

Dragon Age II is a far cry from it's Origins. Less CRPG, far closer to an ARPG. It's a sub 30 hour enjoyable adventure but it isn't a good role playing game. The role is already played - you just get to decide if you're an arrogant champion or a kind one. There's little to no impact of your choices through the campaign which is a shame, as is the fact that you play for 30 hours entirely in 1 location. It's worse than Final Fantasy XIII - a feat I didn't think a high quality studio could muster! Anyway, everyone knows DA2 was EA's fault, BioWare did as much as they could and it stil has it's charms. I enjoyed it, it's ok.

Dragon age 2! I have played Origins, it was enjoyable to say the least. There were some aspects of it that I enjoyed some major plot points that I am glad the developers brought forth but overall I did not really enjoy this game as much as I was hoping. Between the annoying combat, underdeveloped ending, and severe lack of questions answered during and after the series it was a rough ride looking back. So let's first start with what I enjoyed, the characters in this game were fine, the world was interesting, as I mentioned I enjoyed the first game and had high hopes coming into this one. There were some stars throughout my playthrough, Varric and Isabella being two soft spots for myself. There was a whole plot point about your mother and how she came to die from an evil mage which I really enjoyed! Looking at other options the game has, seeing how if you bring your brother on the expedition he could die, or he could join the gray wardens, or if you dont bring him he becomes a templar all are really interesting dynamics of the game overall. Oh! And the call back to granny from the first game and now she is hot! Love that.
Now in the parts of the game I dislikes, let's talk about the elephant that is the ending, I went with the save the mages ending, and they really made the mages look like bad guys even until the end, I played a mage and defended them to the end but overall it was frustrating seeing how no matter how I tried there was no good that came out of them even if the main character is a mage. There is also the fact there is no epilogue just a “he disappeared off the face of the planet” serious?! What kind of ending is that?
Then we run into how there were some serious favorites in this game creation, any of the female characters models were made with incredible detail and care while looking at the males it was rather generic. Frustrating when there is only so much you can do to have a little equality in the characters you create while my character looks like he was made out of play doe
There was a small annoyance I had with combat where I was stuck on the character I was playing, I could not free cam to move my mouse to cause my player to put a spell somewhere specific it was frustrating when it would lock on as well, instead of letting me put my spells or abilities wherever I please.
Overall I had a lot of gripes with this game but there were some silver linings, at the end of the day play it if you like the first one, because it is a set up for the third one or so I was told. It's not amazing, the menu-ing annoying and buggy, as well are some of the questing, but it's a fine, fun play through. I had two great points and two point five negative points so it bring it to a nice even 5/10

Not nearly as good as DA:O, but I still enjoyed it. Marian Hawke was a good protagonist, and Varric and Aveline were memorable companions. The two DLCs were meh. Some bugs wasted my time, and the game crashed a lot due to Steam-EA "integration" which I hope never to do again, but overall the game was definitely worthwhile.Updated 7.5 Months Ago

Difficulty spikes, repetitive combat, lazily-designed encounters, stilted writing, pointless cameos, asinine sidequests that are neither compelling nor rewarding. This is an incredibly rushed game, and you can see evidence of that throughout the game. If Dragon Age Origins was everything good about BioWare, this is everything wrong with them. Yet there is some charm, and I did have fun.Updated 8 Months Ago

Now that Bethesda is dead this is the (story driven) ARPG series with the most potential but this one entry is not perfect. There are at times really annoying glitches here and there (pathing and damage calculation with resistances taken in account). However, the story is really good (your experience will varry depending on how you play and who you like...), the graphical style is lovely (especially now with several enhancements like HD textures and all, that one good thing with PC ports). The gameplay is not bad but could use some enhancements...The ending is just epic despite one thing that's a bit weird depending on who you side with... and the soundtracks in the credits WOW!

I really like the characters and the world, but the combat and areas are rather bland. You end up going to the same few dungeons over again to look for a marker on your mini map, and that's the majority of the side quests in this game. My favourite part of the game was doing the companion quests and learning more about the member of my own party. The main story was also good and built upon the world and lore that Origins set up.I think if they had taken more time to flesh out the levels and dungeons and added more varied side quests, this game wouldn't have the reputation of being the black sheep of the Dragon Age series.

7.5 rounded up.Dragon Age II is an odd beast. Even though I'm rating it about on par with most professional and fan reviewers, I feel it's a much better game than the one most people describe. This game is often described with scorn -- but it's good. It's just full of so many cut corners that it doesn't feel like the AAA experience fans wanted. It doesn't compare to DA:O or the Mass Effect series or most of the other titles BioWare was producing. If anything, it's more on par with the Awakening expansion pack but with the playtime stretched out using MMO-style filler.
Parts of this game are still worth highlighting as exceptional -- namely, the characters. They are the best part of this game, their quests and their dialogue and their personalities. The individual writers behind them have, in most cases at least, done a tremendous job making you feel for a cast that starts out fairly trope-y. The biggest turnaround for me was Merrill, who starts off like a generic manic pixie dreamgirl, having me kind of creeped out, but whose arc is, by the game's end, downright tragic.
I think that's another highlight for this game: The tragedy. The writing is dark and oppressive; there really isn't much light at the end of the tunnel for any of those involved. No redemption. I was shocked by a number of the betrayals.
So about those cut corners: The dungeons. These are notorious for a reason, and people aren't kidding. There are not a lot of maps or areas to explore in this game, and they developers cut-and-paste everything. Repeatedly. The developers change dungeons up by simply...turning different doors off so you can't access those rooms or corridors. You can still see the areas on your map, sure, but you just can't go there. This gets obnoxious on its own, but is made more-so by the level design being consistently mediocre throughout the game. The city of Kirkwall and its surroundings aren't interesting -- everything is brown, for one. Everything. (The DLC -- especially Mark of the Assassin -- fixes this by having lots of carefully-crafted new dungeons and outside areas to explore!) The repeating level design coupled with the quest design -- (so many fetch quests!) -- ends up making DA2 feel more like an MMO than a CRPG.
Mixed feelings about the main storyline. Even though the individual character quests are mostly fantastic, the main arc is messy and inconsistent and bends its knee to tropes one minute while inverting those same tropes a minute later. I applaud the devs for experimenting so much with the main storyline despite EA's iron grip looming over them. There isn't a main arc, really -- there are three chapters, each one alludes to the others, but they're all fairly independent. They don't form a cohesive Hero's Quest or anything like that. The first tells the story of the Hawke's rise to fame and fortune on the Deep Roads; the second on the uprising of the Qunari; the third of the looming war between the mages and the templars. They're quite independent, and the lengths and work put into them all varies. (Generally, the beginning of the game has the most content, and by the end, you can tell they were really struggling to meet the deadlines.)
I'm really happy to have finally played Dragon Age II. I've been putting it off for 7 years because of the negative things folks say (and EA's Origin restrictions that were only recently lifted). It's a good, solid RPG, but it never compares to BioWare's better games. It's most worth playing, though, for its fantastic characters.

In spite being rushed out the door, Dragon Age II is an amazing achievement in story telling and a worthy entry in the Dragon Age franchise. I can confidently say that I regret skipping Dragon Age 2 at release. For a decade I had bought into this being a bad game that ruined the franchise. I was a fool. Dragon Age 2 may be a flawed game, but it is a good enough entry in the series to merit a playthrough. It's clear that time constraints set by EA had a big effect on this game, most notably in how the entire story takes place in a single city and its immediate surroundings. The team clearly did their best to make this work by dividing the game into multiple acts with years in between showing the grander conflicts growth over time. This is to the benefit of the game'e protagonist, Hawke. I'm sure there are many who would argue again this next statement, but I truly think that Hawke is a better protagonist than Mass Effect's Shepherd. Hawke has a canon backstory that only differs slightly based on whether or not you make them a mage. They go through some intense family drama and loss. By the time act 3 rolled around, I truly felt for Hawke and recognized him as his own character akin to Geralt in The Witcher series. This change, of course, differs from the first game but I felt that it worked for the story being told here.Unfortunately the game's pacing takes a dive in the final act which is where I presume the crunch set in. Act 1 takes its time to introduce you to all of the companions and establish Hawke's family as refugees from the first game's Blight. The second builds on the conflict with Qunari until tensions boil over and heads begin to roll. This second act was the highlight of the game for me as it gave me the opportunity to build my relationships with my companions and engage in side quests that emphasized the mage-templar conflicts in the city along with the viscount's growing fear of the Qunari within Kirkwall's walls. While the act ends with one of the worst boss fights in Bioware's history, the interesting story and good pacing of the act can't be diminished. Then act three takes the wind out of the sails as far fewer side quests are available and the Templar-Mage plot is hurdled toward its conclusion. It's a shame Bioware wasn't given more time to flesh out the final act.
Gameplay is fine if a bit too easy at times. The streamlined rpg mechanics and combat make things punchier at the cost of tactical depth and challenge. While I found the rogue to be much more fun this time, there's simply not much to get excited about with the game's combat system. Exploration is repetitive as you explore every corner of Kirkwall many times over, and the environments are repetitive and reused throughout the game.
In short, Dragon Age 2 is no masterpiece but the story is interesting given the limited scope Bioware was forced to work with. Many of these characters surpass the first game's cast and I hope I will see many of them again in the next title. Despite the rushed ending, the events that take place feel significant and I like how many party members are in direct conflict with each other in the their beliefs. Play this game if you were dumb enough to skip it like I did.

Dragon Age lite. Still an amazing story, great lore and characters. The gameplay was nice, it's more or less Mass Effect-esque. Although they obviously skimped out on the environments, by cutting the world down to one city and a few neighbouring rural sites, and also reusing a lot of the maps, it's still a pretty good game. It definitely lives up to the Bioware name.Updated 3 Years Ago

I had low expectations coming into Dragon Age II. I played Dragon Age Origins (in two parts, I started it years ago, and came back to it last year to finish it). While I really liked Dragon Age Origins because it reminded me of Baldur's Gate, I actually enjoyed Dragon Age Origins II more because of the storyline and characters. It drew me in from the start, had decent graphics (even as I write this in 2021), and was a really enjoyable ride. Length was perfect as well. The main drawbacks was the repetitive nature (you're literally always in the city of Kirkwall) and reused tile sets. Also the combat, it was ok for the first few hours, but as the game progressed, I really thought it was repetitive and I looked forward to combat being finished (as opposed to enjoying the fighting).
While those are a few big drawbacks (limited locations, same tilesets, boring combat), it's a testament to how strong the story and characters draw you in. I still loved playing it, and the DLC was also pretty good (I liked Mark of the Assassin better than Legacy however).
Looking forward to playing Dragon Age Inquisition!

This is an example of a game that is ok-ish if looked at in isolation, but really fails as a sequel. It is two steps down from Dragon Age: Origins.First step down is the combat system. It is fully action oriented (not a bad thing per se), but that makes it rather boring. Every fight is about endurance, not skill. There are waves of enemies on normal battles and also boss battles are always waves. At the end the question was: How many waves does this fight have? It is fun though to throw a fireball into a group of enemies (that never gets old).
Second step down are the story choices. It basically doesn't matter what you choose. This becomes frustrating apparent in the end (I will not spoil anything here). You literally can see that they choose a narrative that brings all possible different ends to one (and it didn't make too much sense).
On the plus side, the companion quests were interesting. You got to know your companions through those quests and really started to relate to them. Companion quests are the strongest part of Dragon Age II in my opinion.
The story is more personal and tied to Garret, I actually liked that. It was not save the whole world, but more like save the town and get famous while doing so. I also didn't mind that everything took place in Kirkwall and the surroundings. In its best moments it felt a little bit like Neverwinter Nights. The heavy recycling of dungeons leaves a bad taste after a while. Every dungeon is basically the same, but they cut off some areas with stone walls. But on the plus side you quickly know your way around, even in a completely "new" dungeon.
All in all it was worth playing for the companion quests and the ok-ish fantasy story. I also played the DLCs.

+ interesting concept (focus on a city)

- low-stakes and ultimately anticlimactic story (at least for me)
- camera is too close during combat
- Kirkwall doesn't feel like a proper city
- too much backtracking and running around between the same 4 areas
- despite there being very few locations the game still recycles caves and dungeons way too often
