Really fantastic story and characters, gameplay could be a tad better, some of the enemy placement was dog water and level design could have been a lot better in some areas (El Odio and ALL OF THE MEAT CIRCUS come to mind). Game has so much charm to it as almost all DoubleFine games do which makes me overlook a lot of huge glaring faults. Glad I got to play this classic.Updated 6.5 Days Ago

Love it, love it, love it! I literally played 10 minutes of this game and fell in love. From the moment the intro started, the funny jokes and great voice acting to the interesting gameplay and player freedom, I am IN LOVE WITH THIS GAME! Apart from being hilarious, the dialogue between characters is just great writing, IMO. The game is guaranteed to make you have a good time. It's just too much fun not to play. The camera basically fights you and the graphics, though unique and artistic, are nothing to write home about (especially if Gen Z is the only one home), but it is so worth it cause everything else in the game is just a beautiful surprise! They put an impressive amount of love and care in this game that it shows in all the little animations and things you can do in the game.PROS:
- Knock your socks off funny!
- No hand holding. Figure it out!
CONS:
- No hand holding. Figure it out! LOL
50/10 Cause it's just that good

Very comicalGood
- the game has a great sense of humor
- dialogue is comical.
- the art design and environment is bizarre. Made me want to continue to see what crazy world and scenario I will end up in next.
- the abilities were cool to use. Every character and NPC had voice lines and unique reactions to abilities you'd use on them, which was unexpected detail.
Bad
- the camera can get very wonky and the view could be obstructed by the environment, making platforming annoying.

Psychonauts is a game with a distinct charm and personality; it stands out from most other games in the simple fact that it’s highly original. These facts are highlighted further since this is a platformer, the story and gameplay universe make perfect sense, and the developers are able to let their creativity shine when these go hand in hand. But why the low score then?Well, first off, the gameplay has not prevailed the test of time. It feels like your character is stuck in mud while sliding on a slippery icy surface, you have to fight against the controls in order to brute force your way through outdated gameplay segments. Over and over you will slide and fall off platforms because, as I said, your character is stuck in mud and sliding on an icy surface, constantly.
So the platforming is bad, ok, but how does the combat fare then? Well, unfortunately, that part is also very bare bones. Your various abilities are cool in themselves but translate poorly when it comes to actual gameplay. Bosses have interesting mechanics on paper, but they are just too clunky to offer any real fun. Again, you kinda have to brute force your way through the bosses; they are not super hard, just frustrating and overall not fun.
I actually had to delete the game in the final platforming section, the meat circus. OMG, was it frustrating and badly designed. Hopefully you play on PC, because it has apparently been improved on that port. Overall, as you can see, the originality and witty, fun characters couldn’t save this game. Hopefully the sequel will have fixed many of these issues while still maintaining the charm and soul of this game. I suppose that 20 years ago this would have been acceptable, not in 2024. 55/100, a rather bad game in todays standard.

A 3D platformer that does a lot of things at once and does not excel at every one of them.1) Collectathon: There are soooo many figments scattered throughout the levels that it’s almost like if a Mario game asked you to collect every coin in a level. And this is not the only thing you need to collect in each level.
Apart from that you have other collectibles in the “main world”. I feel like they went a bit overboard on this aspect just because that’s what was expected of these type of games at the time.
At least you get nicely rewarded by unlocking some delightful art.
2) Puzzle: Most of the challenge comes from figuring out which ability fits a certain situation, and you will unlock many throughout the adventure. Some of these “puzzles” are well designed and others are more obtuse, but the game does provide a very thorough hint system in the form of bacon (yes, no mistake there).
A lot of times you will feel like you are playing a “third person graphical adventure”, and a very good one at that.
3) Platformer: This is where most of my frustration with this game came from. The physics are kinda floaty and sometimes the camera makes it hard to judge depth.
This is more evident when you use the levitation ability which lets you jump so high that sometimes you’ll wonder whether you are taking the intended path. Again, a product of its time.
These flaws are more than compensated by the charisma of Raz and the many other characters that compose the cast of the game. Their dialogues are very funny and well written.
Another thing that elevates this game is the artistic direction. The physical portrayal of various mental disorders and traumas is very well designed. It all has a “Tim Burton Saturday morning cartoon” vibe that I really dig.
As a whole, I found the game concept very original and enjoyable, even if a bit chaotic at times. I hope that the recently released sequel has polished out most of the flaws I mentioned while keeping the heart and humor of this entry.

It's a unique game with a good story and a lot of fun details, but the mechanics are bad, and the game doesn't appear to have been playtested at all. This is the greatest game I've played in years. Thanks to Tim Schafer's adventure game roots, the story is original and imaginative, and the level design really pulls you in to the surreal atmosphere. The characters are fantastic, with spot on voice acting delivering some great one-liners. The game is loosely structured, allowing you to roam around and play various missions, many of which are based within other character's minds - allowing all sorts of weird and wonderful things to happen. The gameplay mechanics are a lot of fun, allowing you to use various psychic powers such as levitation and telekinesis. While the prospect of hunting for items to buy equipment or level up seems daunting at first, the game never gets repetitive or dull thanks to the beautiful and imaginative scenery and plenty of characters to talk to or just listen to. I honestly think that gaming can't get much better than this. It is hilarious, thoughtful, hugely detailed, and above all a massive amount of fun. It's great and just keeps growing on you.

It's a weird game but I see why it got its fans. It's a 3d colecthaton platformer, with point & click adventure elements and 3d zelda style combat. And above all it got a healthy dose of humor and charm.Because it mixes up the gameplay it can make it sometimes feel janky because of the lack of polish, but at least it stays fresh. Man, I am divided. On one side, this is a platformer like no other, full of ideas and creativity. Some levels are really unique in their concepts (both visually but also gameplay wise, it's really a particular experience). Milla level was so fun with the funky music, Napoleon with a literal playboard, the painter with a unique identity (and makes you detest the bull as much as the characters)....
But on the other side, it is also really not as polished as it should be. The meat circus (a great idea visually and thematically, that plays with the fears of the characters) had a really bad camera at times, Gloria's puzzle was not really clear, the end of the milkman is a bit confusing and not intuitive, WHY MAKE PEOPLE FARM RESOURCES WHERE WE COULD HAVE GOTTEN THE POWER MORE CLEVERLY.
But overall, I would still recommend this game for its creativity, and it's quite short to finish (it does not overstay its welcome, which is a great quality in my view).

First off, let me just say that this game has good gameplay mechanics that I found quite enjoyable. Diving into people minds and exploring different words was a unique thing that stood out to me, and my favorite one had to be the board game one. However, I did feel like something was missing, granted this game is pretty old at this point, it fell just short in some aspects. The story, while alright, did have it's moments, but sometimes it just fell flat imo. But the characters were pretty silly and it felt like watching a Saturday morning cartoon which I liked. One thing that stood out to me about this game is how dark this game actually got. I thought this game was going to be a lighthearted game from start to finish, but damn this game has some grim themes. Overall, I would give this game a 7/10. It was good, but not great.Updated 7.5 Months Ago

Psychonauts, released in 2005, story and characters have aged like fine wine. Every character has their own personality and their own quirky dialog. The story gives the player a fun time with random, yet funny, moments. Creativity runs throughout the game. Small details like small talk between classmates or the motivation of each character level is what makes the game great and unforgettable. The levels are creative just like the level where Raz needs to defeat Napoleon in a board game by going and helping the villagers inside that board game. It's genius and if you are a fan of 3D Platform then it will be satisfying to play.
The music and visuals are unforgettable. The character models are interesting, but it just brings charm to everything around them. You start to love how they look and interact with the world. The music, at times, can be loud with brass instruments playing in the background. All the music is good to great and compliments the vibe of the game.
Often we hear of developers showing how much they care for a game by how much work they put into the smallest details. Psychonauts is a prime example of this. It shows true love for what they did and accomplished. This game deserves a 10/10

I've just finished this game, 15 years later after the original play-through. And it's genius. (And yes, very frustrating sometimes.) Story: 11/10.
It's so much better than I remembered it. It's super funny: I was actually laughing during the play-through. But also it's deep and dark. Almost all characters have tragic memories of loss, shame and abuse. In a sense, this game is a good primer for psychotherapy concepts. Like Oleander had PSTD, Cruller -- multiple personality disorder and Boyd definitely has paranoia. And then the locations are well-designed to fit the overall theme (like psychedelic party in Milla's head). The world and characters are so deep that I believed that games can be art again.
Art-direction: 10/10.
Visually this game aged really well. And all thanks to a beautiful art direction. Good art compensates for old tech here. Asymmetrical faces, reflective eyes, crazy levels, beautiful comics with memories. My oh my. This game is still beautiful.
Gameplay: depends.
That's why I gave the whole game 9/10. The core gameplay is a good one. Mix of a platformer and a puzzle adventure. But where in other areas of the game creativity and diversity gave it a cult following, gameplay itself can be very frustrating. The game was glitchy at release, the PS4 port made things only worse (it crashes, the shadows break down, Raz skips double jumps). The difficulty spikes are not kind. Like other reviewers I felt that Meat circus is a chore (I almost threw my gamepad towards the wall twice). Achievements are also unfair. Good luck to get all the figments. It's gonna be your second work outside of main work. The developers were definitely cutting corners. And it became ugly in some places. It affects the story too. Cause the ending felt abrupt. And I don't think that it was intentional. More like a time pressure. But I forgive everything for news segments for Gogalor and for fish screaming 'Freedom!'.

A little rough around the edges, but a great example of creativity in 3D platformers. I can't believe it took me so long to get into this game series. 3D platformers are my favorite genre of video games, I grew up on Battle for Bikini-Bottom, and this one is very fun. As an avid board gamer, the Fred Bonaparte level was absolutely incredible. The last level was meh but for the most part I loved the game.

Its strength is in its story, characters, and creativity. The camp felt lived in, with so much unique dialogue and interesting scenarios. As for worlds, "Milkman Conspiracy", "Waterloo World", and "Lungfishopolis" were especially brilliant. The platforming and combat were fine. These were the weakest parts of the game so when the final level placed the most importance on those, it wasn't great. Still a must play if you're a fan of 3D platformers. Oh man, I feel like I got tricked into playing this game. So many people recommended it online & rated it pretty highly. But this is a 4/10 game imo.The gameplay, especially the platforming, is janky, frustrating, boring, and not fine-tuned. It makes me appreciate so many other platformers that have tight controls & camera control and have strict rules that make you know you can make a jump on a surface and slide/fall off like I did so many times in this fucking game. The combat mechanics are pretty shallow and boss fights usually come down to figuring out which power the game wants you to use, without much prompting which power that is. They could have used color codes or recurring signs/attacks to telegraph what powers to use, if they wanted to restrict which ones you do use in boss fights. Why all bosses can't be, say, set on fire or picked up with telekinesis? Because the designers had a specific idea in mind and that restricts fun & creativity with such interesting powers.
The second worst part of the game was that it was trying to be a platformer while also trying to be a "collectathon" game. Except the things you are collecting don't make almost any difference in the gameplay & difficulty of the game. I barely felt stronger for collecting so many damn figments and the useless emotional baggage (with a ~7 second cutscene every time that you can't skip). In my opinion, they should have focused on collecting things or on platforming, or if they did both make collecting things have much more impact. And more RPG elements of spending your levels on upgrading specific powers would have made collecting more fun & engaging. As it is, you collect a bunch of stuff to be told a few levels before "Hey! You'll upgrade invisibility! And then never need to use it!" Great.......
The story is on paper somewhat interesting, with psychic secret agents who save the world. But what does the main character do in the game? Go into his friends, teachers, random mental asylum inmates, and villains' minds to solve his problems. He does save the world in the process, but you never feel like the world is in danger, as the entire game takes place in a summer camp & nearby asylum. I didn't care about my actions because I didn't care about the characters. The writing & introduction of each character despite Razputin (the main character) are so weak and random. And there are faaaaaar too many characters for me to care about all of them, which waters down how much I care about each of them in return.
The music wasn't amazing, and there sometimes was no music during parts of levels. The artwork is interesting, but with the jagged edges and repetitious textures during each level.
I'd say the best part of the game was the humor and some jokes were pretty funny :) Those made me smile.....but there were a lot of jokes that tried to hit that just fell flat and were way too random to be funny.
Overall, I do not recommend playing this game. Play a better platformer like Super Mario 64 or a better collectathon game like Donkey Kong 64. Ignore what people say, this is a game better left to the past.

I've replayed the game 18 years after my first playthrough. The game has aged, although the art direction is still one of the best I've ever seen in a game. The Milkman Conspiracy is still one of the best designed levels ever. Also, none of the characters are inherently evil, not even bully Bobby Zilch, which is great. Some of the boss fights have a confusing environment, made worse by often horrible camera issues. I died quite a bit in those because I misjumped a lot, not because they were distinctly hard.
After 18 years, I've found some passages I previously enjoyed rather tedious nowadays, especially Gloria Von Gouton's Theater. Great concept, not so great gameplay. The ending and Coach Oleander's rehabilitation feel rushed.
All things considered, Psychonauts still is a very unique and great game.

I can only recommend this game if you are nostalgic or very curious about early to mid 2000s 3D platformers and you can get it with a big discount. The graphics and art style direction are to me the biggest thing this game as going for it. They have a very Tim Burtonesque vibe to them and I quite like it.
The story is very basic. Raz goes to a summer camp to become a psychonaut, but he has to do it in a very limited time before his parents come pick him up. Of course there is more going on then just that, but I’m not going to spoil it.
Throughout the game you have to enter people’s minds and explore their doubts and fears in creative ways. I think the worlds you explore are very diverse and interesting to explore.
However, the controls are very clunky making the exploration a bit of a chore sometimes. Some abilities don’t work that well, like the shooting ability, the telekinesis ability, or even the levitation.
The game also has invisible walls (common at the time) and some inconsistencies of when your abilities work. Sometimes you can grab unto ledges, other times you can’t, even when it’s the same type of ledge.
Overall I think it’s an alright game, but the controls have not aged well at all, and really hurt the experience I had.

Phenomenal game in pretty much every aspect, from the wild graphics, whacky characters and story, perfect soundtrack, and just plain fun gameplay. One of the better games I have played in a long time, it held up extremely well for the most part. Only real complaints were that some of the powers were only used for a couple specific things and then became useless, and then right before going into the Mailman Conspiracy, which mind you was an amazing level, you had to farm arrowheads which was more of just a nuisance. Other than that, this is a must play game, it can feel a bit dated in the gameplay aspect here and there, but just push past it and enjoy the adventure.Updated 1.5 Years Ago
