A great remake that I thoroughly enjoyed. The gameplay was fun, the story was charming, the characters had great relationships, and the music was nice. Having never played any of the Sly Cooper games, I loved the opportunity to play it on the PSVita. A bit bummed out that you couldn't use any of the cool abilities that you acquired throughout your journey in the final boss fight. There were some frame rate drops when a lot was happening on the screen, but it didn't happen more than a handful of times. Overall, a great way to start the Sly Cooper series and my journey revisiting older titles.I earned the platinum in a little under 7 hours. I only have the master thief sprints left for 100% completion, so if I complete them it will be as a break from other titles.

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus - это фломастерный платформер про животных в тенях с элементами стэлса.
Warner Bros.

I really wanted to get into Sly Cooper, especially after starting Ratchet & Clank a couple months ago. And for a platformer made for the PS2, I want to say what I got to play has aged pretty well. The camera isn't the best and not as flexible as something like Super Mario Odyssey, but it's much more refined and usable than the original Ratchet & Clank. Platforming isn't too difficult too, and finding the right timing to hit an enemy was pretty satisfying as well. Kevin Miller's performance as Sly Cooper is also suave– in short, all the elements are here for me to like this game. But I cannot, for the love of me, get past the racing level in the second area. It is so poorly done and the camera doesn't gel with what you're doing. I've tried it at least 20 times in the last couple days, but it is too difficult for me and frustrating that I can't move on without it. While it ended my time with this game early, at least it's convinced me to try the other games in this series.

Played this while it was on Playstation Plus and what a wonderful wave of nostalgia coming back to this title! The last time I had played it was back on the original PS2 so getting to have a wonderful emulated version of the title again is a true joy to behold! From what I could tell, this is one of the most faithful emulations of the original title. All of the music seems to be original to the PS2 release and not lifted from the PS3 collection, and having the ability to remap controls on the PS5 and have the rewind feature saves you a ton of frustration when it comes to older 3d platformers like this one. If you have a Playstation 5 and wanted to show this game off to friends or nieces and nephews, this is a great version to do that with!Updated 2.5 Months Ago

UPSIDES- Really captures what it would be like to be a Cartoon Thief
- Colourful and expressive character designs
- Beautiful backgrounds and locations with a welcome variety of level design
- Master Thief Sprints pose a hefty challenge that will have you clutching the seconds
DOWNSIDES
- Wildly inconsistent grab-on ability
- Story gets pretty formulaic as the game goes on
- Turret and Van Sections are terrible and a very unwelcome addition to the game
- A pretty lousy finale that fails to make use of Sly's newfound repertoire of abilities
OVERALL
Not a bad start to a classic PS2 trilogy. It is clear that this game is nothing like its sequels and that it was taking a little while for Sucker Punch to find their footing with this franchise. Not to mention it falls to certain trappings of the time period - like having completely irrelevant gameplay sections (that are not optional mind you) that are only there for variety's sake.
Still, it's a fun game. And a good start to an iconic video game character.

Overall - 8.5/10
This game was really good and I had a good time with it. I played it on vita and didn't find it outdated at all, it aged well.
Story was straightforward and simple. I love the charm it has of old platformers.
Music was nothing special. It was serviceable but not memorable.
Graphics still hold up and the game looks good.
Gameplay was super fun, so much variety in the levels. The level design is some of the best in my opinion, better than the classic Crash games. I loved the power-ups you get and that they are meaningful to the character and the plot. Only complaint was some of the mini games like Murray's racing and other driving sections.
Overall pretty good game and I'm very excited to see how the future games top this!

Mediocre platforming game with some truly awful mini-game segments.Inbetween platforming levels you are forced to play through terrible mini-game segments ranging from turret defence missions, on rail shooter sections and races. 30% of the levels are mini-games and 75% of the final hubworld consists of these!
These levels really break the pace and should rather have been omitted in favour of more platforming levels.
Other than that, the game is a fairly decent platformer with some light collectathon elements, although most of the levels feel the same with little variation, unique challenges or level gimmicks.
I also felt no real incentive to collect the clue bottles as the unlocks for them only give you variations of Sly's cane attack move or slow motion jumps for when you're already mid air. None of them were useful or added anything to the gameplay.

The game was buttery smooth to play through. Nice level variety using the minigames and the chase levels. The voicework is pretty nice and the main character, Sly, always speaks in a very calm and whelmed tone which is very surprising and cool especially for the era that this game is from. Looks really nice on the PS3 at 1080p60. The mechanics are mostly always really tight and the precision platforming is quite accurate in judging what you're trying to do. Overall, felt a little more like an experimental game and I think the second one will probably be a huge improvement in every factor. Would've given it a 100% rating if not for the last level's sudden difficulty spike and confusing platforming.Updated 1 Year Ago

Sucker Punch Productions is a video game developer that's practically synonymous with Sony and Playstation at this point. And while they were only formally acquired by Sony in 2011, their debut on Sony hardware came almost a decade earlier-and along with it, the debut of one of the Playstation 2's unofficial mascots. In fact, Sly Cooper & The Thievius Raccoonus was only Sucker Punch's 2nd overall game, which makes the game's success all the more impressive. And while Sly never reached the sales number highs of the other unofficial PS2 mascots (Jak & Daxter/Ratchet & Clank), it maintained a dedicated enough fanbase to warrant a trio of sequels, and is still a fondly remembered series to this day, and wishes for Sly 5 in any State of Play announcements are not uncommon. As is befitting of a master thief, Sly Cooper mixes 3D platforming with stealth elements, which can involve sneaking around enemies, disabling traps, and cracking into safes. With its hand-drawn animated cutscenes, SC feels like something directly out of a Saturday morning cartoon, and the aesthetic is fantastic throughout. Levels are generally well designed, and the visuals are particularly impressive for a 20 year old game. Character design is fantastic too. From the main protagonist, to his partners in crime, to each of the bosses you'll encounter; the game is totally bursting with personality. It has just the right amount of over-the-top-ness to it where it comes off as charming and silly without taking itself too seriously, which is especially impressive for the time period, perhaps even more so than the impressive graphics. And befitting of his character, Sly is generally just as smooth to control, too, especially with the abilities you earn as you progress.
Sly Cooper's goal in this game is to steal back pages of his family's secret thieving manual, so it makes sense that for each boss he defeats, he gains a new technique with which to outfox his enemies. This is pretty standard for a 3D platformer, but where SC is unique is in its optional abilities, unlocked by finding collectables in each level. None of these optional abilities are required to beat the game, but it's a neat concept that allows for a surprising amount of variety in playstyle. Admittedly, while the levels are mostly well designed, they're also quite linear, so there isn't as much variety as there could be, and many of these collectable abilities are more style than substance. That's likely because the game, even with only mandatory abilities, is pretty easy to beat, and most enjoyment of it will come from its slick aesthetics and character, rather than its challenge.
Even then, it's a pretty short game, and even a 100% run will likely wrap up in less than 10 hours. This wouldn't be too much of a problem if all of its levels were utilized effectively, but as the game goes on, it leans more and more on mini-game type levels, which are at best generic, and at worst, just annoying. More importantly, though, they lack the feel and ambiance of the main levels, and generally just feel like filler. Especially frustrating is the final area, which, instead of being a test of everything you've learned so far, is essentially a mini game collection. The game loses a lot of momentum towards the end, and that's a shame, because while the final level is one of the best in the game, the overall end game experience is likely to feel a bit bittersweet. But to be fair, it's not only the final levels that fumble Sly Cooper's theme. It certainly portrays itself as a stealth-focused game, but there is rarely any consequence-or, indeed, incentive-to try to play stealthily. The levels that prioritize sneaking around enemies instead of defeating them are the better parts of the game, but it can feel a bit disjointed when the gameplay doesn't often match the game's stylistic theme.
Still, while Sly Cooper might not be the most immersive title, it certainly has enough charm and wit to entertain you for the majority of its short runtime. And when it really leans into that comic book vibe-the cutscenes, the hammy villains, the smooth talking protagonist-it's a blast to play. It's certainly easy to see why Sly became an icon of the early and mid 2000s, and even if there's a bit too much fluff and a bit too little meat in his debut, it's still worth experiencing in the modern day. Even if Sly Cooper's gameplay wasn't always able to live up to the style of its presentation, it provided enough fun to get players invested, and enough engagement for them to imagine themselves in the shoes of the thieving mammal for years to come.

I'm very conflicted about this game. I was expecting a stealth game, but instead got more of a beat 'em up. I figured with all the talk of master thieving, it'd be encouraged to sneak past enemies and not set off alarms. Instead, you're encouraged to kill every enemy you come across, and setting off alarms has no long-term consequences. And to top it all off, the whole game has that trademark PS2 jankiness. But in the end... I think I enjoyed it. There were some pretty infuriating moments, the final area especially, and I hated the car races. But nothing ever really overstayed its welcome, and all the mechanics definitely add up to a fun game, especially with all the abilities you unlock from the vaults. The biggest cause of annoyance was dying due to janky controls, and then eventually getting a game over because this game has a lives counter and is *very* stingy with giving you more, for some reason.
But gameplay aside, I absolutely *love* this game's art style, the characters, the soundtrack, all that good stuff. The Saturday morning cartoon vibe was super strong with the cutscenes and chapter title cards, and I'm always a sucker for cartoony cel shaded graphics. And while not all the boss *fights* were amazing, the bosses themselves were great characters.
Worth noting I got all the keys and vaults, but didn't even touch the time trials. In the end, I think I'd recommend this game! But I still hope that Sly 2 is better, that one seems to be the fan favorite.

Sly Cooper does a lot right with its first game. The movement feels fluid and easy to control with only slight hiccups when some abilities target the wrong object (like trying to land on a wire but you target a hook instead). The game holds up rather well with the main flaw being the character's facial animations acting strangely at times due to the way the character models were made. The HD version has some additional bugs here and there, but runs smoothly overall. The sound design is really good to with memorable movement swishes and sneaking sounds.
Levels are varied with a new theme per chapter. Minigame levels are also included per chapter, most of which are decent with a few hard ones in there, and all levels are required to progress. The main issue I found was the lack of checkpoints in some levels. Bosses, a few levels, and some minigames must be completed in one go, making extra lives useless in these levels since you restart upon death and can get more every game over.
A collection system is in place to offer a challenge to unlock new abilities. Most of these are not very practical to use vs your basic moveset and are not required for any levels. Hint bottles are fun to collect though!
This game offers enough challenge to be satisfying for most. A few levels and bosses can be difficult to complete and since all levels are required you have to complete these to progress. Most levels are more focused on having fun instead of challenge, so these roadblocks are not common.

It's oozing with character and is very slick but the actual platforming is limited by Sly's moveset but it has some really great ideas for the stealth side. The levels themselves are very linear, though it's still fun. The worst thing about Sly 1 is the final area. It does away with platforming and it's almost all mini games. It really takes a dip in quality. I really like how the game looks, it's got a timeless style. I love the characters stories, both Sly's and the villains. Some of the boss fights get creative. I was pleasantly surprised seeing a rhythm game for a boss.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is a unique game with a strong loop and great presentation. The game's mechanics aren't quite as tight as some of its early 2000s contemporaries, but Sucker Punch did a good job of mixing in some variety including a couple of rail shooter and even twin stick shooter segments. I could've done without the racing minigame, though. The boss characters are particular highlights, though the fights themselves often leave a lot to be desired. Don't miss the amusing banter between Sly and Carmelita Fox; there's some pretty funny stuff to be had there.Updated 2 Years Ago

I've always had a boner for Sly Cooper. But I'd forgive you if you thought this game's design philosophy was outdated. Mostly a generic Crash Bandicot clone and a Crash 3 clone at that. With hub worlds that have mini games and boss battles giving you new abilities after you beat them. While that isn't it bad on it's own, the game doesn't have nearly as much of an identity compared to it's sequels, if you remove the different story and character, it's interchangeable with Crash 3. Not bad, but is the least memorable from the Sly games.Updated 2 Years Ago
