Space Marine 2 is hands down the best shooter I have played to date. There are very few detractors that kept me from giving it a perfect 10, really just the somewhat poor AI in the singleplayer campaign that makes the game feel a bit unfair at times. Beyond that what you get here is an epic story that was engaging from start to finish, detailed and beautiful looking environments, excellent level design, a combat system that perfectly compliments itself, and about as faithful of a 40K game as possible. Additionally, my compliments from 1 were alleviated which was fantastic. It's a game that reinvigorated my love of 40K and will surely turn new players into fans as well.

If you're playing solo, I'd recommend against buying it for now unless you are absolutely sure you'll like it. The game is balanced around human players and the AI leaves a lot to be desired. You can't command them and they very rarely help with objectives, making a lot of the coop sections a pain to get through. There's not much story to speak of, minimal dialogue, no secrets and no real collectibles, combined with repetitive gameplay means there's not much for you here and it's going to be really frustrating. While the other characters have powers that are fun to plan and combine with friends as you call and set up strategies, alone you don't get that choice. It's a crap shoot whether or not AI uses an ability half the time, and then another gamble if it's even useful. If you've ever paid a multiplayer game with bots, like Payday or L4D, it's exactly like that. Just awful.

If you've got at least one friend to play with? Absolutely, grab it. The gameplay with a friend is great, it's so much fun. Ammo is kind of a scarcity sometimes and hearing your bud yell they've run out and you watch them charge in and start slicing while you provide cover fire it just something you can't get alone. The sense of scale is crazy, there are some graphical issues but not so bad they interfere with the game. The side missions once you finish the campaign are fun and take another viewpoint from the main game and, honestly, I found it a lot more enjoyable. Being able to plan loadouts, unlock abilities and skills and plan your character was a lot more enjoyable than the campaign where so much of it comes down to hoping you find a weapon you like just lying around.

I briefly touched PvP but honestly I didn't enjoy it very much and have no interest in playing more, so I can't speak much on that, but hey, it's here if you want it. I'm not sure of the staying power of this game, the weapon variety is a bit lacking, campaign is somewhat disappointing, and the replayability is questionable; but in the right moment, with the right people, it's great fun.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a terrific third-person shooter with a compelling story, loads of weapons that are a blast to use, and a healthy variety of enemies to use them on. It once again borrows many of its ideas from the Gears of War series, but they’re good ideas, and Space Marine 2 does a fine job of making them its own. And while the Operations PvE mode that accompanies it doesn’t currently offer enough to keep me coming back, the deep customization options for your Space Marine do look promising if it’s supported in post-launch updates as planned. Besides, when you’re eviscerating aliens on planets as pretty as these, it’s hard not to leave satisfied.
