Homefront was a game I was expecting to be terrible going in, I was expecting myself to play and dislike it as much as the campaigns to Battlefield Bad Company 2, Battlefield 4, Medal of Honor 2010, Medal of Honor Warfighter and Ace Combat Assault Horizon but surprisingly, I got some enjoyment out of it, sure the game is a CoD clone to the point if you put a screenshot side by side of this and a CoD game from that gen, you wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. Yes, games like Freedom Fighters are much more realized and better executed game with a similar premise. And yes, this game isn't going to win over the people who don't like these style of scripted military shooters but I'd say Homefront is an acceptable CoD clone than an insufferably bad one like the aforementioned games. I'd say it's a CoD clone on par with the James Bond games from the Activision era. Two of the big reasons as to why is that for one, it checkpoints well, rarely if ever has moments where the scripting becomes so obvious that it breaks the illusion like say prison to ski lift shootout in Battlefield 4 or that building sniper section in Medal of Honor Warfighter and the game is pretty short and goes by quickly like a movie does. Another good thing it does, and this could be as a negative for some but the game tells you during it's more scripted sections who to kill and what precisely to do during them meaning there be less restarts because of ambiguity of not being able to tell what to do during scripted sections.
The gunplay is pretty similar to CoD especially the CoDs in the 7th gen, you got the two weapon limit, grenades that will rarely be used since all you fight are human infantry soldiers, lots of interchangeable hitscan weapons where reliable aiming is through ADS and the difference between them being the various attachments, but it does replicate CoD's combat decently enough, at least weapons have decent firing sounds and damage animations to enemies have decent feedback.
However one thing I do like is that using the sniper does not require you to hold your breath and you can fire away with it which makes it a weapon I want to use. I also like that weapons run out of ammo pretty often even on easy meaning I have to use guns enemies use from time to time which makes combat slightly more dynamic.
There are some cool moments like battling on the San Franciso bridge, escourting multiple trucks while riding a helicoptor(this never got as obnxious as the protect missions in Ace Combat Assault Horizon), and fighting through a store where the infamous white posphorous scene happens.
Some negatives is that easy mode doesn't make a difference since your player character's health is pretty low even on that difficulty. CoD's easy modes does at the very least give you more HP.
The story also isn't that good but at the same time, I'm more annoyed by the silent protagonist since the characters talk to him a lot and he never says a word. I find the concept to be wildely outdated especially in games where the story involves characters interacting with each other.
There was glitch where an NPC was supposed to open a door but it wouldn't causing me to restart the mission and then have it happen when getting to that part again.
Overall, for a game I was expecting to be completely garbage, I kind of liked it, is it something you should go out of your way to play? No but if you want something to beat in an afternoon or weekend, you could do worse than this.

Solid FPS Gameplay with pretty much all the cliches you could ask for lol. Its alternate future plotline is a bit laughable at times and the story feels a bit try-hard / edgelord with some of the scenes, but for a COD clone you couldn't ask for much more, it's still a fun game with decent level design and pacing. The only major design flaw is the Goliath support tank, it's not really fun to have a super weapon that you don't directly use that doubles as a vehicle you can't really drive eitherUpdated 2 Months Ago

A mediocre CoD clone, which is nevertheless worthy of attention because of its extremely short duration. A my to ucítíme změnou obrazovky. Jinak, je to prostě to, co jsem psal. Lineární střílečka, dost dobrý děj, ale musí se pochopit. Jinak ta hra nedělá nic extra.Updated 8.5 Months Ago

I suppose that's the problem with leaning hard on a single concept like urban America being a war zone. It probably only connects with particularly patriotic Americans, or foreigners who are obsessed with American culture. When you're like me though, and couldn't care less about the premise, there's really nothing else to sink your teeth into. https://abbysblog.net/blog/homefront

A fun but frustrating FPS that had a lot of potential. Cool premise, but they did nothing with it (story and character development went nowhere). That said, the sound was great, gameplay was fun, and there were some very well-done segments, but not without many moments of cheap deaths. If they'd made a game that was as fun and exciting as the last two levels in the game and they actually took the story somewhere, this would be a very good game, but as is, it was just average to poor.Updated 1 Year Ago

I originally played Homefront back in 2011 when it first released and playing it again in 2023 I can say that the story is actually more interesting now then it was at launch. With various ways the world has changed it seems more possible then it did in 2011. The story is well done but could have done with more fleshing out at times. I loved finding old newspapers that give backstory and the intro cinematic is simply fantastic. Sadly the present day parts of the story are a bit thin. You’re given the bare minimum in explanation about what your objectives are and how they help the resistance overall. Also the ending seems very abrupt. You’re not shown if the battle you were just in had much of an impact on the occupation overall and there is no epilogue to shed light. You aren’t even teased with a cliffhanger, it just ends. The game play is pretty fun. There are a variety of weapons you come across that differ in many ways such as having suppressors; scopes; different sights; etc. Also the game does a good job of making switching weapons realistic as just because you come across different rifles doesn’t mean the magazines would work nor would they be the same calibre. The game also does a good job of varying up missions as some require stealth; others put you in vehicles; some are straight up firefights; and more. One downside is the game holds your hand very tightly and it is slightly annoying. In many cases you are told exactly when to move; exactly when to shoot; etc. For a shooter it has fun shooting sequences so the meat of the game was enjoyable for me. The AI was terrible though. Often times you have multiple squad mates and they were constantly getting in my way; not being a help in taking down enemy soldiers and some times getting stuck in doorways. A further issue was that it felt like the enemy AI would hyper focus on me and sometimes ignore my squad mates so I couldn’t even use them as bait or to take the pressure off me. The voice acting was decent but the dialogue was a little lame. The music was pretty well done although was better when actual songs were used versus orchestra. The graphics were solid for there time. Everything from object detail; faces; hair; lighting; shadows were all good but not great. They hold up even now as not being an eye sore but they never wowed me even in 2011. I played Homefront on Linux using Proton. The game never crashed and I didn’t notice any bugs. There is an FOV slider that goes from 60-110; two AA settings; four AF settings; an AO toggle and ten other graphics options. The performance was fantastic but given the age of the game and the visuals I would expect this. You can change the difficulty at any point. The game sues a checkpoint save system and you can only have one save slot. Many of the checkpoints were spaced decently but a few were downright annoying and felt too far apart. Alt-tab didn’t work.

CPU Usage: 4-15 %

Overall if you enjoy FPS games then I recommend Homefront. The game play isn’t groundbreaking but it is very polished, if a bit linear, and fun. The story was fantastic in lore and atmosphere but struggles with mission details. I finished the story in seven hours and twenty four minutes on hard difficulty, in 2011 I finished it in three hours and fifty four minutes on normal difficulty. I would say it is very worth it’s current price tag of $21.99 CAD.

I have never heard about Homefront before, and I didn't play any of the Call of Duty games so I have no base to compare, but I thought this was a good FPS. So first, in my opinion, the story was pretty weak: Another generic America saves the world against some evil world power - it's usually an eastern European country, or china, or a Middle Eastern terror group, and here it's Korea. This time, however, the game was good at transmitting the horrors of war, oppression and genocide – with group executions, mass graves and parents being shot in the street in front of their little kids. It was unsettling and fully justifies the mature rating in the states and the 18 rating in most of Europe. I didn't feel comfortable with it – it was far too graphic.
From a gameplay perspective, I never encountered any bugs during play, the hit-boxes were spot on and allowed me to aim and hit quickly and efficiently. Weapons were mostly different SMG and MG, with a bit of grenade, RPG and explosives thrown in and they all worked seemingly. There were even a couple of driving sections and a helicopter mission.
While the squad mechanics were good, the verity of missions decent and the action fast, something was missing. I can't put my finger on it – it was a mix of things that even with a really short game time, made the game feel generic very quickly. For one, the characters felt very one dimensioned. You could not relate to any of them and there was not enough about them to care. There was no real relation or chemistry between anyone – so while you understand the cause of what they are doing, you fail to FEEL the motivation. The other thing was that while the main weapon types were SMG and MG, even if there were many different brands, they felt the same during the missions. Add that to a really short game time, and the game didn't quite add up, and that's a shame because it is slick, the environment convincing, the graphic okay and the voice acting quite good.
If you have a few hours to kill and you fancy an FPS – pick this up, it's enjoyable but far from perfect.

☐ 10/10 - Good.

[The Level Designs look great, it feets the game perfectly as an occupied future America.
The combat feels fantastic for an FPS, I would be surprised if it didn't. Developing studio is kinda familiar with the FPS scene.
The dialogue during the game was kinda lackluster. For me, it kinda feels like fillers between cutscenes, not that memorable, and not that interesting most of the time.
The cutscenes will make up for the dialogues in between the cutscenes, and the cutscenes is great, but predictable some of the time.
For me, the voice acting feels fantastic.
The graphics look great for a 2011 game, but it will feel outdated in 2021, but that is to be expected.
The Animation looks fantastic and feels smooth.
The Motion capture looks fantastic most of the time, but it did feel off at some points during my playthrough.
The Voice-Sync feels off most of the time, in and out of cutscenes.
I did encounter a bug during the mission “The Wall” in part 2 of my PlayThrough Series of Homefront.
Basically, Connor got stuck on a large piece of rubble, and I could not progress while this bug was happening. I will classify this as a breaking bug as i could not play the game normally or even progress at all with this bug.
I also encountered performance issues, at times the game would freeze for a few microseconds, but long enough to be noticed. I noticed this happening while the NPC character was opening/closing doors or doing other interactions while gameplay.
The plot is textbook, occupied USA, occupants evil, many games have done more or less exactly the same thing before and after when Homefront did it.
The End was kinda eh.
The Character Development was great tho, ill give them that.
The replayability is not that great, there are some servers up for the multiplayer, but you might have a hard time finding matches as most of the time there are 20-30 ppl playing this game. Even less actually playing the multiplayer part of the game.]
"6/10 – Average.
These recommendations come with a boatload of “ifs.
It's only held back by a few issues (or stiff competition).
Not always the best choice, but it can get the job done.
There’s a good game in here somewhere, but you’ll have to know where to look, and perhaps turn a blind eye to some big drawbacks.”

I don't know why this game got a lot of hate & many calling it mediocre. Trust me I know this isn't a revolutionary game but in a time of generic fps shooters it certainly stands out. I've played a lot of AAA military shooters but what I noticed in homefront is that they didn't hesitate to show the atrocities during war which are not for the faint heart. My favourite scenes1.Intro scene(SPOILER :Mother pleading her child to look away as the 2 parents r shot in front of the young boy)
2. Use of white phosphorus in war was shown quite clearly & that scene had a powerful impact.
This is what makes this game so different from the other garbage military shooters which share the genre but not the quality as War is really an ugly thing & all these AAA titles only care about shooting f/b action packed cinematic cutscenes (Cough COD Cough). I do feel that this game is more suited for the mature audience.I loved the sound of the guns too👌, shooting is totally enjoyable & makes u feel like a total Badass. Last time I had fun shooting like this was with WILDLANDS. Story is definitely short (maybe too short) but was really enjoyable indeed. Graphics aren't top notch still suited this game perfectly. I really did enjoy the story & direction. It also had memorable characters. I definitely recommend this to anyone interested in military fps with a moving story. Ive also seen many people hating this because of the plot(i.e Korea conquering America) calling it unrealistic(even Angryjoe) . Hell mate if u start looking for realistic plot u might as well stick with pinball.
Now I almost forget about the Cons:-
AI teammates are a boon & bane i.e they r competent fighters on their own but every time if u need to open a fking door u have to wait for all of them to assemble as 1 of them CAN only do it & also when u need to climb the ladder u have to wait for all of them to finish climbing then only r u allowed to climb. That is really annoying & takes the fun out when u just finished an adrenaline rush fight scene but then have to stand & wait( like ur waiting for a fking elevator😏)

This game is far from a perfect competitor to the established modern FPS titles, but it does tell an interesting story (of heroes whom seem a bit too invincible), and a broken familiar world. It is, at times, downright chilling and blood-boiling, but primarily it's an adequate FPS with reasonable graphics, level design and excellent music. It isn't as perfect as COD4, but definitely not as bloated in its "ooh-aah" story set-piece elements as MW2 & 3.Updated 3.5 Years Ago

Single player review: It's ok if you get it really cheap. Very simple game mechanics even in the context of the time of release (2011). There is not much to do beside fighting through the corridor-like levels with your AI companions, listen to their chatter and collect some newspaper with more story background. In contrast to the setting (north korea invaded the united states and suppresses the population) the overall scope of your missions feels a bit insignificant. The 4 hours and 40 minutes of playtime where not without enjoyment, so the extremly negative reviews are a bit too harsh in my opinion, but I would have been very angry if I had paid full price for this back on release for the single player experience.Updated 4 Years Ago

This game sucks. The game looks good and there is an interesting premise here, but the execution was awful. The story doesn't take the premise anywhere. There aren't any interesting characters or meaningful plot points. There were maybe 3 moments in total that kind of shocked me, but they were all quickly forgotten by the next firefight. The enemies felt cheap, even on normal difficulty, and most of the guns feel the same. It's hard to tell where you were being shot at and where the grenades were. There's also pretty much no music and all of the guns sound weirdly flat. On top of all of this, the PC version is buggy, even after all this time, as I couldn't progress in one section until I closed the game off, and then when I turned it back on, it crashed. Thank goodness I got this game for free.Updated 4 Years Ago

I preordered this game originally, caught in the excitement and hoping for a good FPS with story. The first pass was ok, but over time the issues of the game took over and made me hate it. Simple gameplay mechanics like tossing back grenades were missing, when other games had been doing it better for years. The game was only polished in spots, and showed horrible graphics and bugs everywhere else. Patches were limited, and the potential was lost.Multiplayer quickly evolved from fun to a grind towards high-level perks. It's now an abusive game of drones and other OP perks, and servers have all but disappeared. They packaged weapons in the game, but hid them behind DLC requirements to cash in. This game was destined to fail. All that's left is bad map designs and some exploit hackers trying to have fun.
I've grown to despise the campaign; it's a bunch of scripted animations. Your teammates give you more trouble than assistance, and are inept at doing anything aside from kicking open doors. The game fails to pick up concepts that even Half-Life 1 had. Avoid like the plague.

It feels like they wanted to write a serious story about the tragedy and human cost of occupation, but gave up a fifth of the way in and made Call of Duty instead. The artwork and story beats evoke imagery from real-world wars and atrocities, yet you spend 85% of your time ignoring that and gleefully Rambo-ing anything within a 20m radius. One of the best examples for me was early on when you sneak into a labour camp and discover the Koreans are creating mass graves. This should have been a really powerful moment, but I honestly felt nothing... and on reflection, I don't think the game did either.
As far as Homefront was concerned, the mass graves weren't full of people who had lives, histories, families, hopes and dreams cut short by war. Rather, they were just a convenient place for the player to hide and watch the next flashy cutscene. One quick gameplay segment later and everything was forgotten to make way for more adrenaline-pumping shooty shooty bang bang.
It quietly reduced human suffering to a sort of disposable set dressing... and in many ways that makes me a lot more uncomfortable than overt, gratuitous displays of violence.
Long-winded story rambles aside, the aforementioned shooty shooty bang bang was decent so it does have that going for it.

Homefront is a modern military shooter set in the late 2020s, in North Korean occupied America. Unfortunately the game squanders its setting through unrelatable characters who flip-flop between morals at the drop of a hat, and a very generic Ameri-centric storyline. Gameplay
The game features Call of Duty-esque gunplay, with little recoil or skill required. Unfortunately, missions consist of "Follow [Character] for a bit so you don't get lost" style handholding and a few unexplained vehicle sections. The difficulty options just reduce the player's health, which on 'hard' mean any explosion in the same postcode is an instant death, and the 100% accurate enemies have no problems dishing out almost instant death
Story
The game ultimately fails to deliver an interesting and compelling storyline in its short campaign (3 hours according to steam, including 30 odd minutes of setting up the game). The attempts the game makes at being morally and emotionally challenging fall flat as your squad feature Connor, the psychopathic murderer and Rianna, initially the voice of reason to contrast Connor flips a 180 after a plot point.
Verdict
Don't bother if you aren't very interested by the setting and COD-esque gunplay. Buy it on sale if you absolutely must, otherwise leave it alone.

Not entirely terrible, even though the ridiculously propagandist premise is (though, in its defence, that could actually be said to be a lesson in humility, as the tables are turned and the US is the invaded nation under occupation for a change). A bit clunky and clichéd and rushed, but at least its a bit different to most war shooters. It has a bit of variety and the gun-play and set pieces are acceptable, though some of the firefights are relentless. Some might complain about its surprisingly short campaign, but to me that's something in its favour, especially as I paid the princely sum of *zero* for it (thanks for the freebie, Humble).Updated 6.5 Years Ago
