It's a fun game that is presented well (as are all NRS games) however the story fails to do anything interesting with the multi-verse concept. In terms of content, this is the barest NRS game to date. There is very little to do outside of the campaign mode and exhibition matches. A Mortal Kombat game without test your luck is a travesty to me and the custom gear system has been downgraded significantly from Injustice 2. Personally, I'd recommend MK9, MKXL, or Injustice 2 over MK1. It's still a fun game but it's like $30 fun if you don't plan on getting sweaty online.

Something missing for me on this installment. I have no interest in multiplayer, so the single player aspect is sorely lacking. Cameo system doesn't add anything, and the lack of mid fight X-rays really hampers the feel of the fight. Fighters for the most part are great, with a few fan favourites missing. No doubt to put into the game at a later date and charge for. Shame. Not even a Krypt! pah!

I was not expecting this level of quality in a Mortal Kombat game. All cutscenes look amazing. I played this game on hard and while I'm not big on fighting games, Mortal Kombat definitely brings in that nostalgia factor for me so I had to get it. The biggest thing that bothered me was that although I have a very strong rig and while the combat and in game cutscenes were very fluid, not really any noticeable frame drops, every time it would go from a fight to a cutscene or from a cutscene to a fight it would stutter quite heavily for about 2 seconds. Also, it would have been nice if I could somehow skip the special x-ray attacks as seeing them a couple of times is fine, but when you see them 100s of times it just becomes a bit boring to watch, specially as they recycle half of the animations during that sequence it is mostly the same movement throughout most of it.. Other those 2 things it was a very solid and enjoyable experience.

I enjoyed this game mostly for the story but I really wish they'd taken more time with it. For the most part the story is good with some smart changes to their new timeline. My only complaint was the last boss fight was pretty lame and the end was very lackluster. I still vastly prefer MK 11 and it's dlc.

Without microtransactions it would be a flawless game. Some of the cutscenes run at 30 fps on PC, so turn off VSYNC... hopefully will be fixed in future updates

Can't say I like this game too much. I did enjoy Mortal Kombat 11 a lot more, both in terms of story and competitive gameplay. Something about this one feels off.

Also, the story kinda blows. I love the cool DLC characters, but even with that I don't see many reason for playing this over Street FIghter 6 or Tekken 8.

How about that?!, the best story mode of any fighting game I've ever played!

Plenty of good surprises. One negative surprise (but I'm playing 100% offline, could it be the cause) is that nothing got unlocked after the credit roll.

Pros
- Story mode was a fresh and intriguing time.
- Core fighting mechanics felt good, which was helped by the excellent Kameo fighter system.
- Fatalities shine once more.
- Fun cutscenes backed by a great voice cast and fantastic visuals.
- Johnny Cage is peak in this entry.

Cons
- Story falls back into familiarity towards the end which was a shame.
- Invasions was fun for an hour but ultimately too grindy for me.
- I miss the traditional crypts!

Pretty good fighting game, although suffers from another story that has yet another multiverse story.

Getting fed up of stories like this, but the game was pretty tight overall, the way it controls.

Haven't dabbled online, but have spent a few hours dabbling in split screen over PS5 shareplay. Good fun with friend.

I'm bad at fighting games so I really only played the story. I like Mortal Kombat games because I love trying every character out and being able to go through 4 fights with each character. However this makes 80% of the game is just cutscenes which gets boring. The story isn't super good but its cool to see the new remade world and how things have changed and how they are going back to the way they were before. The highlight of the story mode is the last chapter where you pick a champion and fight a bunch of melded fighters. If I was good enough at the game I would enjoy it more but I couldn't get past the 2nd combo tutorial for a character. 7/10

Mortal kombat game so you can't go wrong with it really but I don't think the kameo system is the best, feels kinda lazy to me for some reason. I get they were trying to do something unique but I honestly would've just preferred being able to switch between 2 characters mid fight lile other fighting games.

Other than that rhe gameplay itself is good fun, fluid and feels good to play.

The story, as most recent Mortal Kombat games, is amazing it honestly feels like a movie in its own right.

The visuals were amazing and the cutscenes and the story were surprisingly very well done for a fighting game. Or maybe I have played very few fighting game campaigns recently so I only have memories from the PS3 era. The thing that impressed me the most was the fluidity and crispiness of the animations - everything from basic walking to stylish combos and super attacks. Had a lot of fun playing this and was totally worth pre-ordering an extra piece. Think I'm going to do this for SF6 and Tekken 8 as well now.

The game series so old even grandpas know about it, finally netherealm figured out what to do with the IP.

Needless to say Mortal Kombat's lore and sequence was an absolute mess, I mean, how can you explain fighting against Shang Tsung transformed into the fucking Joker or Robocop in MK11 or even worse stuff in the other games. Rebooting the whole franchise was the best decision ever, and it paid off with a banging game and story.

They retold the story about 4 times before finally calling it quits, liberties were taken in MANY areas and aspects, choices that show they aren't afraid anymore, and enough about the lore, the story mode is really good once again, for sure short, but graphically, narratively and as a gameplay standpoint, for me it's as good as MK11 and that is incredible, the "new" buddy system also was a really good thing and added to everything.

In all, they got rid of the Krypt, and thank god, I fucking hated that game mode, you had to fucking traverse a 3d world just for the unlockables, I really did hate it and never played more than 1hour combined. But now, there is the Invasions, to be honest, it isn't a mindblowing new game mode, but I found it fun enough, REALLY repetitive, like OUT of your mind repetitive, but it appeals to me more than the online mode and doing all the towers, so I guess I had more fun!

The gameplay is really good, I'm not great at the game anymore, but I feel like there are too many infinite combos, even the AI in hard difficulty can do, like 24 hit combos that deal 500 damage is just absurd, although I understand I just need to git gud, and that is why I dont play online lol.

The roster is small, but it tries to make up with the kameos, and the achievements are fun, except for the Titan Battle (random) and the 5 mastery with kameos that is barely possible without XP glitches.

In all an incredible Mortal Kombat game.

10/10. I still can't comprehend why tf Darrius is in the story...

A rather uninspired and unfinished sequel. It does not bring enough new to the table, and feels too shy to introduce larger departures from previous installments, which wastes the potential of the whole "reboot" thing. It promises changes, but delivers mostly the same, just less polished than before.

The Kombat is a bit toned down compared to the last trilogy, and most characters play similar to each other, except where they are awfully disbalanced. The multiverse is a joke, as it only changes the appearance of the kombatants and nothing else, looking like some of the more amateurish mods available when MK 9 first hit the PCs.

On top of that, the egregious monetisation policy and the horrendous switch port makes the studio looks amateur.

It is sad because it had the potential, but it is broken beyond repair now. I don't think patches will ever make it to the full potential of what the game could have been, and it is very clear it was only released to fight against SF 6. A fight MK 1 is doomed to fail in all universes.

They should have taken their time and released another Injustice or something similar while maturing their MK vision. Or gone for something completely different altogether, like an action RPG or a new franchise.

It won't hurt fans of the series to play this, but they will feel underwhelmed. It's probably better to stick to the older ones until MK makes another komeback.

The story mode was fun, and it even surprised me a few times. After the twist in the middle of the story though, things quickly resolved themselves. I wish there would have been more interactions between certain characters, since some seem to be forgotten about relatively quickly.
Still, a fun game overall. A little too short on the story end of things, but the gameplay is very solid.

Another MK story session with the homie done.

Narrative was okay, with some cool callbacks from my favourite PS2 MKs. I do think I'm all MK'd out, though. Or maybe I just played too close in proximity to when I played Aftermath...

Cast is kinda lacking a few, but I do really like the alternate versions of these characters! I also like the newly added Kameo moves.

I did not play the Invasions mode as I didnt have time and traded it in.

One of the darker horses [I feel] to come out of this year, with a refreshing take on the storyline, fun character designs, satisfying-feeling kombat, & lots of neat options + cosmetics to tweak. The story mode is AAA-quality in & of itself, but add-on the seasonal "Invasion" TTG-style mode and the obvious multiplayer components & you've got a real fighting game champion contender for 2023.

I’m truly not a fighting game person, I usually tend to mash buttons to accidentally make long combos lol. Injustice, Mortal Kombat & Street Fighter 6 are the only exceptions, NetherRealm just have fighting games boiled down to a perfect formula!! I really just love the stories that NetherRealm always craft, I’m wasn’t super deep into Mortal Kombat lore at least until MKX but they still are able to account for fans like me with their storytelling. I really liked MK11 & didn’t like the Aftermath DLC much, but I do see how it was very much needed for MK1. I think the series did need another soft reboot & I’m happy to say MK1 just might be the best in the series hands down! Story-wise, kombat-wise, graphically, almost everything!
The stages are all so beautiful to look at & the character models look great too. Why is ALMOST EVERY CHARACTER in this game so attractive?! It’s insane. The kombat doesn’t feel as deep as previous entries but I don’t mind it, like said I suck at fighting games lol. Kombat did feel heavier & a little clunky at first in the story but once I got back into the groove of things that feeling went away. The story is what really made me fall in love with this game, yes it’s painfully short like always (and I’m sure it’ll get another big expansion in the next year) but so many of the new & returning characters are just great to watch. The ending is CRAZY awesome but it did feel very rushed, if it had a few more chapters to build it up it would’ve left a better impression. I absolutely loved seeing new versions of characters like Mileena who were antagonists in other games be good once again, as well as some protagonists going bad. I really can’t wait to see more of these characters in another expansion! The roster is packed as it is & adding HOMELANDER is gonna be nuts, but it was kind of sad to not have access to more klassic characters like Sonya except for the unplayable kameo fighters. Those were a neat addition but it’s nothing really new with fighting games. I’m glad a lot of lesser known fighters got a chance in the spotlight after years of inactivity though. All in all, I’ll probably update this review once an expansion drops so we’ll have the full story then. MK1 is probably the best fighting game I’ve ever played & I can’t recommend it enough!

Mortal Kombat 1 is a successful reboot that allows for new players to join in on the long-lasting franchise. Unfortunately, the game does suffer from a weak start, occasional bad voice acting, and an ending that while fun does not give us a full conclusion to its story. The fun gameplay and campy writing make the experience enjoyable for new and returning players. This game has a wide range of characters, so everyone can find one they enjoy playing, regardless of skill level. Even with a few bugs, it does not overshadow the fact that Mortal Kombat 1 is easily one of the most graphically impressive fighting games to date. As said before, this is the most accessible Mortal Kombat game. If you are seeking a serious, high tier story, well, this game is not it. However, if you are seeking a “it’s so dumb but fun bloody blockbuster experience”, well Mortal Kombat 1 is definitely for you. As a result, I give Mortal Kombat 1’s story a 7 out of 10.

Interesting plot as usual.
The twist was quite expected and predictable. And maybe this predictability gave me some pleasure.
The ending is promising. But cannot image how it can be. At least now)

Control is great, nice and smooth. It is pleasure to play.
Also the small number of characters is also felt. I believe they will be available with DLC. Which is a good and bad at the same time.
Kameo mechanic in general allows players to extend their power with the powers of other players. But would be great to go further and add as cameo all playable characters. Missing Jax, Sonia, Noob, Jade T_T

I was playing a tower mode and have lost Internet connection. Because of that I also have lost all the progress related to that tower... Don't understand why playing in local single player mode Internet is required.

Without SSD loading takes near 1 minute (versus mode)

There is micro-transactions =( and coins. It is possible to "win" color skins... Why ? How it can improve experience?

CONCLUSION:
In general MK1 is just a nice action movie with annoying interactive part. Joking )
The infinity game with an interesting plot and smooth controls.

I think it is a good reload of a franchise.

- Replacement for Krypt is an RNG shrine you dump coins into
- Some of the designs and faces aren't good at all

Mortal Kombat 1 is another great entry in this legendary series, but it’s not one without issues. The new Kameo system is excellent, there are smart changes to the fighting mechanics that address many of the fundamental issues that cropped up over  Mortal Kombat 11’s life, and predictably, the fantastic single-player story mode that continues to be the gold standard of the genre. But certain elements of online play are starting to feel dated, and Invasions mode is not nearly engaging enough to hold my attention for as long as is needed to unlock a majority of the goodies hidden behind its many treasure chests and gimmicky battles. Still, Mortal Kombat 1 marks a new beginning for the franchise, and it’s a very exciting launching point for the next era.
