Has a lot in common with some of the great PS2 games in the series and does some interesting things with armor. The only things really dragging it down are a relic of the platform this originally released on. The camera is way too close and the height/ tilt of the camera can't be controlled at all in 3rd person (though it can in 1st person, but you are stationary). Some of the controls are just a little bit off -- the game can be unresponsive for very short periods of time in certain situations, but overall it's pretty decent.

I decided to play Size Matters again at all because it got added to the Playstation Premium Classics service and I heard the PSP version was better than the PS2 so it got me curious in playing the game again. I also have a soft spot for it since it was the first Ratchet game I ever played

As the game is, I wouldn't call the "bad game" so many hype it up as but it's not a great game either. It's pretty much middle of the road all though it's a middle of the road game that I had a moderate amount of enjoyment out of.

The best way of describing Size Matters is that it's an amalgamation of the 2002 game and it's sequels.

You have Ratchet being more self centered and dawning his 2002 look, you got the PDA, and you respawn with the amount of ammo and bolts you had before you died instead of at a checkpoint. It also has the nanotech health upgrades, the weapon upgrades, armour and strafe from 2 and 3. It almost feels like Ratchet and Clank 1.5 at times.

In the PS2 version what held the game back however is the awful camera, it zooms in too close and it jerks around too much when moving and when in tight spaces, and when too many enemies get on screen it becomes frustrating to dodge the attacks since enemies hit as hard. I'm not sure how difficulty in the older Ratchet games worked but it seems the more well you do the harder enemies hit and more ammo they take to die, if anything I'm glad this system was dropped in later games.

The PS5 version which is an emulated PSP version is interesting in that it comes with right stick movement and since the PS5 version lets you customize the controls through the emulator, it meant I can make Ratchet moved like he did in Deadlocked where left stick lets you strafe left and right. It's the way to play the game for me. The auto aim and by extension camera isn't that great since the autoaim follows the enemies and the camera moves along with him on top of being spazzy in tight spaces and with many enemies. So the PS5 version somewhat fixes a prominent issue but at the same time not really.

The mandatory races especially the first while have David Bergeard's awesome music, controls really awkwardly especially with how movement with the analog stick works. Boosting will send you flying upwards instead of on the race track. There's only 2 mandatory races which is fine.

The aforementioned difficulty can be an issue since enemies get so spongey by late game that that I just used the shield, rocket launcher and PDA combo to get past everything. This is towards the end of the game but things just got so unbearably difficult that I stopped using the other weapons. I do disagree with the common sentiment that enemies don't react to getting shot because they do, but they just take so many shots from non rocket launcher weapons that it isn't worth the effort. That and bosses are also spongey and some weapons just won't be able to effectively do damage so PDA spamming becomes prominent after a point.

However the biggest issue with Size Matters is that the game just feels the same game as the console Ratchets, it doesn't offer much you can't find from the PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5 games. The game's selling point at the time might've been that it was, "Ratchet and Clank on the go" but when playing it on a console, the novelty wears offs. Games like Daxter offered more platforming than the Jak sequels did and the God of War PSP games offered a remaped controls like pressing L and R to dodge and magic shortcuts. Ratchet Size Matters on the other hand doesn't have much you can't find in other games in the series even the PS3 spin offs like Full Frontal Assault and All 4 One have more of an indentity.

There is some good with Size Matters with all this said, the story and character interactions are moderately entertaining and it got some laughs out of me, the game seemingly is an interquel between the first game or and any of the PS2 sequels despite apparently not being that.

The setpieces while cumbersome and possibly frustrating on the PSP analog nub are pretty decent and have more going on than the games Uncharted games do since you can't just hold forward while cool stuff is happening around you.

While it doesn't do anything out of the ordinary for the series the attempt at emulating the series is solid enough. The game really is carried by how much of a series fan I am and how this game was the very first I played.

Overall, I like Size Matters slighty more than I did when I replayed it 2 years ago but rewind and custom controls played a big role in this. I still wouldn't call this game "bad" in a million years since I played worse games but at the same time, its a fun game all though I'm biased towards the series which is another reason. I'm still bummed there won't be another game for years and Insomniac is the "Marvel Studio" now but that is a topic for a different time.

Objectively, yes, this is a bad game. But, I can’t help but be pretty astonished on how a game that, while inferior to its counterparts, is a Ratchet & Clank game on a portable system from 2005. I grew up with this game, I was so happy when I got it on my PSP and I spent so many times playing the first couple of planets. But, the controls were just so awful that I couldn’t do it. It’s a game that demands double joysticks and instead you’re relegated to one joystick and the L+R buttons to look.

Now that it’s available on PS Plus with an added second joystick, it’s mildly better. I think it just brings out the downfalls of the game even more now that you don’t have awful controls hindering you. The enemies are such bullet sponges and the guns are terrible. R&C is known for having spectacular gunplay, even in the more lame titles, but this game doesn’t leave much to play with. The concepts of guns are good but the performance is terrible and the upgrades are hardly noticeable. I also felt the second to last boss was significantly harder than the final one.

Otherwise, it was serviceable for the time and the platform. Definitely one of, if not, the worst titles in the franchise. But, I don’t hold it against it since it was made by a different developer than normal.

Its never good when I celebrate a game ending, and this is the first game in a while were I outwardly said "thank god its over"! It obvious this developer doesn't understand what makes this series good. Its slow, its clunky, and frustrating. Guns barely have any effect on the enemies, they don't flinch and didn't feel like it matter when the guns upgraded. THIS GAME NEEDS A SECOND ANALOG STICK. As much as people love to sing the praises of the PSP and its game I have not seen a game that has been released on PlayStation Plus that didn't play like crap without the second analog stick. Camera is SOOOO bad in this game, I'm not even sure the second analog stick would have helped.

The game is also short and you can see the charred remains of a good ratchet game in here. Best avoid this game unless you have to play all of the Ratchet and Clank games but by god if you haven't played Rift Apart or the Ratchet and Clank game on the PS4 PLEASE play those games.

One of my favorite gaming experiences growing up, and possibly my favorite dedicated handheld game of all time. I played through the whole thing twice, but never did get enough bolts for the RYNO. I don't believe I ever found all the titanium bolts, either. I do distinctly remember printing out an IGN guide in order to help me find some of them, though. This isn't much of a review, but if you like other Ratchet and Clank games, you'll probably like this one as well. This was the first I completed, though, so I have a soft spot for it.

I was not really impressed by this game, it just seems like Ratchet and Clank but on the handheld. The developers definitely could have done more to polish the game up for the PS2 and the only new thing that I liked was the Clank lemmings game. Other than that it was very bog standard, it has good variety with racing and arena challenges but that's to be expected. Nothing really wow'd me and I would have liked to see them try to give their own twist to the core gameplay because as it is, it just feels like an inferior safe entry in the series. The weapons were also very forgettable and not that fun to use for the most part, I didn't like how the suck cannon got obsolete so quickly and how the cannon seemed to do little to no damage, especially to bosses, the story was ok and had some funny moments but nothing memorable.

[ review in progress.. | playtime : 9h11 ]

Honestly didn't expect to beat this whole thing in two sittings, but here we are. It is actually pretty good at giving the ratchet and clank experience on the PSP. All the cool weapons and things are there, the wacky cutscenes and dialogue is there, and the platformin we all know and love is there. Only reason why I can't exactly strongly reccomend it is because it can be kind of glitchy at times, especially with the hoverboard racing minigames. If you like ratchet and clank though, I'd say go for it. If you haven't played an R&C game before, this definitely isn't your starting point.

Size Matters is a solid Ratchet & Clank game, but definitely one of the worse games in the series, and you can kind of tell it wasn't made by Insomniac because a variety of things feel off. But first, the good qualities.

I think this game is fairly impressive for a PSP game, especially visually, and it actually plays pretty well once you get used to the fact that there's no second analogue stick. They came up with a decent solution for that by using the left (only) analogue stick for regular movement and the directional buttons for strafing, so it's easy to swap back and forth as the situation demands. The story is also decent, although not as well fleshed out as I would have liked, and there is a lot of creativity and variety in terms of the worlds and level design. There are also a variety of mini-games, some of which are pretty solid, a decent variety of weapons with some interesting new ones (although nothing mind blowing), and pretty expansive armour and weapon upgrade systems that clearly had some time and effort put into them. It's clear that the devs cared about the game, and there's a lot to enjoy because of that.

However, there are a lot of issues as well. The game is on the short side, which is too bad, and the writing - while not terrible - does strange things with the characters that seem out of place. Ratchet in particular feels like he's back to his attitude from the first game to some degree, despite Size Matters taking place much later after he had matured, and Qwark is just shoehorned in. There are also a lot of small problems with the game that add up, such as weapons not doing enough damage/enemies having too much health, making weapons feel weak a lot of the time. Checkpoints are also frustratingly placed at times, like with a late game boss battle that restarts you before a three section "avoid the danger" sequence that caps off with a boss fight rather than just bringing you right to the battle itself. The bolt economy (money) is also reminiscent of the first game in that everything costs too much, so you have to grind sometimes. There are arguably too many mini-games, and they are hit and miss. And lastly, of the stuff that I can remember off the top of my head, the final boss has a massive health pool and kills you in three hits even if you have all the best armour.

Is Size Matters a bad game? No. But there are a lot of small issues that constantly plague the experience, making it a lot harder to enjoy. It's worth playing for a Ratchet & Clank fan, but it's definitely one of the worse games in the series, and plenty skippable since I'm pretty sure it's non-canon.

This is a serviceable ratchet and clank game. The level design is surprisingly good but it's very linear and only has about 10 planets. It's loaded with mini games that are mostly frustrating and replace the arenas of typical ratchet. The combat is ratchet-as-usual and feels fine but the difficulty balance is so bad that it derails the entire game.

The first problem I noticed was that there aren't enough health crates. I quickly started killing myself after every checkpoint just to get my health back. The shotgun and flamethrower are also far too weak and near impossible to use in bosses. Those things aside, the difficulty is generally fine for the first 2/3 of the game but then it suddenly becomes impossible. Too few checkpoints, enemies do too much damage, you don't do enough damage even with upgraded weapons, you don't have enough money, etc. The final boss will kill you in 3-4 hits even with the best armor. In all likelihood, you're going to need to grind at some point. The Rocket Launcher, PDA, and Shield are all arguably necessary in order to beat this game but those items are all very expensive and not available until very late in the game. There's a few worthless weapons and a ton of hit-or-miss weapon mods that didn't seem to get me much so make sure you save up for those 3 things specifically. The second-to-last boss felt impossible until I bought the rocket launcher and then it was a joke. The final boss is similar with the shield and PDA as the shield effectively doubles your health and you'll want the PDA as he has an absurd amount of health and you'll quickly run out of ammo with the few effective weapons. These last few bosses really deny you the ability to play with the weapons you prefer and force you into buying specific items and that's a real shame.

There are plenty of side races and arena challenges to earn bolts but they're unfortunately the worst side games I can remember in a Ratchet game. The lack of the traditional arena means there's no good place to level up your weapons too. I did the majority of the arena challenges, granted I skipped the horrible extra races, but I replayed several levels and was still nowhere near able to buy everything. This game has the unfortunate combo of things being too expensive but also requiring you to buy certain things to win. The balancing really is the death of this game.

Ratchet's always had difficulty spikes but I've never had to stop progressing and grind for an hour in order to beat a boss and I had to do it twice in this game! I really recommend JebTube's review on Youtube, it really nails what's wrong with this game and he pinpoints the exact moment it all falls apart. This game should have been a good but forgettable Ratchet game but instead, I can't forget how bad its final hours became.

Why on earth do people like this one? It's so fucking bad. The characterization of Ratchet, Clank and Qwark is so far off; maybe similar to the first one but really crap even compared to that. The gameplay is so much worse. I swear High Impact Games have never played a Ratchet & Clank in their collective lives. This is so shit. Bullet sponge enemies with ridiculously powerful attacks. Most of the low level enemies can take you out in a couple hits, even with good armor and full nanotech. Fucking insane. I swear they'd maybe watched a bit of the first game on YouTube and said "hey let's make one of those." The reviews of this game are as baffling as this game. Good night and fuck off.

The core Ratchet gameplay is still there, and some fun can be had as a result, but otherwise this is a terribly flawed game. Strafing is nearly impossible to do in even medium-size spaces, you can't walk backwards (or turn without moving forward a bit) which leads to a ton of needless deaths, and the difficulty spikes like crazy towards the end. The Ratchet series is one of the best in gaming, check out literally any of the other entries in the series and you'll be quite pleased. Avoid this one though, unless you enjoy poor controls and sloppy level/enemy design.

Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters has everything a triple-A PSP game should have. It's packed with fantastic single-player content, has a strong multiplayer element, boasts a great visual and thematic presentation, and excels with razor-sharp gameplay mechanics. Sure its camera may cause problems here and there and its originality suffers when compared to earlier R&C titles, but at the end of the day, Size Matters is still an excellent way to exploit "free time on the go" and it's one of the few PSP titles out there that really shows off the system.
