Knights of the Old Republic is one of the best RPGs ever made. The story is set thousands of years before the movies, so while you're still definitely in the Star Wars universe, the experience is new and refreshing.BioWare are of course famous for their storytelling, and they do a great job here with light vs. dark side choices that influence both the story and your character's abilities.
Can be tricky to get working on modern systems, but there are plenty of how-to's and mods out there that will smooth the experience, so I urge you to persevere and enjoy a real classic.

Product of its time. You can tell it's Bioware game if you have played mass effect. Had a lot of technical issues such as the resolution, bugs, and game crashing. Gameplay is simple but varies through different playthroughs. Story was alright but predictable. The saving grace of this game is the lore. I wouldn't play this game again, maybe if they remade it. I don't think I can recommend anyone this game, it has to have someones unique taste to it; old and Star Wars.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Even more than two decades after its release, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic stands tall as one of BioWare's greatest achievements, perhaps even their greatest not named Mass Effect 2. The Star Wars license pulls some weight for fans of the franchise, but even without that, the choice-driven design shines in nearly every aspect of the game other than the heavy handed and combat-heavy final hour. BioWare has never been known for crafting great video game endings and that holds true here. But when the journey to get there is as engrossing as this one, it's hard not to fall in love with Knights of the Old Republic anytime you get a hankering for some role playing in that galaxy so far away that we love so much.Updated 6 Months Ago

I thought long and hard about whether to give it a "3" or a "4". The plot is great, everything else is not so good. Everything about the gameplay and everything that makes up a video game is done far from the best here. Usually some questionable elements end up coming together in a finished puzzle, revealing their essence in tandem with other equally questionable elements. But not in this game, everything here fails both individually and as a finished picture. The progression is unclear and not well designed, the battles are boring and monotypical, the choice in dialogues either does not affect anything, or is limited to black and white options (so hyperbolized). The only thing that is done in this game at a decent level is the lore, which pulls all the interest of the plot (well, there are a couple of twists, yes, also affects). Bottom line, as a game Kotor doesn't deserve much attention (especially because of the length, I went through it in 35 hours), but the story here is probably worth exploring for every fan of Star Wars.Updated 7.5 Months Ago

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic• First time playing
• A Classic not only for the developers, Bioware, and for Star Wars games, but for PC games in general
• Every year, I tend to pick out one long RPG that’ll take a good part of the year to play and finish
• In 2020, in was Fallout: New Vegas. In 2021, it was Deus Ex. In 2022, it was Morrowind. This year, I felt that it was Bioware’s turn
• I picked up Knights of the Old Republic, or KOTOR, way back in 2010. When my hometown just got a Walmart, there was a 5 pack of “Star Wars Best of PC”
• I purchased it because it had a PC version of Stars Wars Battlefront, one of my favorite PS2 games as a kid
• Having a PC copy of Battlefront, along with 4 other games, seemed like a good deal for a teen with only so much pocket money
• I did try out the other games in the collection, but mostly stuck to Battlefront
• Star Wars Empire at War I played for a few hours but after playing as the Emperor, inexplicably finding Mon Mothma, blowing her up and instantly winning I lost interest
• I also tried Republic Commandos, but that’s a discussion for another essay
• There was also Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Of course, I didn’t play the first games, Dark Forces and Jedi Knight, so I didn’t bother
• So all that was left was KOTOR, which I did play until I ran into a wall. Enemies were destroying me in every fight I was getting into so I didn’t get very far. I didn’t even leave the first planet
• Either I didn’t understand the character creation and screwed my stats or I plainly just didn’t understand the gameplay, so I dropped it
• Over the years, I’ve now played some later Bioware games. I have played through Dragon Age: Origins and the opening levels of Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Inquisition
• I have a number of Bioware games in my backlog, so I figured I would start with the game that gave them the reputation as a quality developer
• True to the title, KOTOR takes place 4,000 years before the event of any of the Star Wars movies
• One would wonder why everything looks exactly the same. 4,000 years ago in the real world, the pyramids were only just being built in Egypt
• I kind of pulls back of curtain on the truth of the matter. Star Wars is a brand that can’t change or evolve in fear of aliening mass audiences
• I would be fascinating to see an ancient version of this world and see how it organically grew into the future of the movies, but no. Star Wars still needs star ships, blasters and lightsabers
• It’s not a huge problem and there are some more primitive examples, like swords, but it is disappointing. Not a missed opportunity because Bioware most likely hand their hands tied

I know this is considered one of the greatest Star Wars games of all time, if not the best, but the RPG elements were not done well. Progression is too difficult. Having to save every 10 minutes is a nuisance. Story is a 10/10! Gameplay though is not very entertaining. My was my second play through, first being on PC back when it came out. O jogo é um pouco datado obviamente, foi lançado em 2003, mas isso não é um impecilio para que ele se torne um puta jogo, a questão dos dialogos e escolhas são bem legais, os tripulantes da sua nave são bem legais também ( te amo canderous). Captures the spirit of the original trilogy with the same feeling of a planet-hopping odyssey: jedi rise to power, political intrigue, wacky alien characters and varied worlds.Switch port feels low-effort. Bugs such as: music disappearing, multiple crashes at critical junctures, inconsistent texture quality on characters, one soft lock. Also, saving takes two loading screens. It does have a cheat menu to level your character or give yourself force powers early.
+ The sweet Jeremy Soule soundtrack along with the John Williams orchestral classics really carry the gravitas
+ Fun classic dungeon crawling
+ Real choices in a solid story
+ Takeoff/landing cinematics are still great
- The first two planets can be a slog
- Combat is boring and not strategic until you get a lot of force powers
- Tons of dialog that can feel pointless if you're not into the lore
- Untelegraphed instadeath mission design at points
- Sith choices feel more like the d*** side rather than the dark side
- Final dungeon is bad

The best star wars story out there and one of the best I've had in gaming. The characters are very lovable and charming. The fact that you are able to choose between dark side and light side is very fun and opens tons of posibilities. I love the ost in this game. If feels iconic in some way and, even if the graphics come from an original xbox, there are some beautiful sceneries accompanied with ost that makes some places magical and a pleasure to see (I'm talking about Manaan of course). The lore is amazing too. There are a lot of extra lore and facts that you can check about planets, places and characters that are not necessary in any way, but makes the experience more complete. As a very dedicated Star Wars fan, I love having this little pieces of lore that overrall create a whole universe that feels alive. All and all, this is a brilliant game that deserves more recognition, even if it may feel like it hasn't age that well in some aspects. The only real big issue I have with this game is the optimization for newer platforms. I played the PC version on Steam and I have to say it's hideous. There are tons of bugs and optimization issues that makes the game simply unplayable. I had to constantly check on various forums to find a fix for a ton of bugs, and it really cut the experience for me (thank god a remake is coming).
With all of this being said, this may be the best star wars game out there, and I can confidently say that it's my favorite star wars game out of the ones I've played.

One of the best games every made. A fantastic RPG with great story, characters, writing, voice acting. Very fun to explore the planets and discover the lore of the areas. Incredible music, fun character building. A very good amount of varied quests with excellent dialogue. One of the most important features in the game is the alignment system where you can align towards the light side or the dark side. This makes the game have great replayability where you can discover different choices and outcomes for every quest. This also greatly affects the ending.

Wow. I was not expecting this one to be as goodas it was. It's almost 20 years old but still holds
up excellently to this day. The graphics definitely
show their age but it runs very well on Switch.
The storytelling, RPG mechanics, and OST are
fantastic. I wish the auto-save feature was a
little better. But I can't see a remake with some
quality of life improvements scoring any lower
than 10/10. Absolute gem. Finished a light side
playthrough and I'll hopefully get around to
messing around with the dark side of the Force
later on. Easy recommendation if you love Star
Wars or RPGs.

Fantastic game. Incredible in nearly every way. The story was awesome and had a really great twist that actually caught me off guard. Most of your companions are somewhat interesting but ultimately, in my opinion, forgettable. What really got me hooked throughout this game is how much it felt like a TTRPG experience. From the combat to the quest design, it felt really similar to gaming at the table. I enjoyed it. I get why some people might not enjoy it as much as someone like me but if you ever wondered what it would be like to play Star Wars using a ruleset similar to D&D, then look no further than the phenomenal Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Updated 1 Year Ago

The first video game role playing adaptation of star wars, Knights of the Old Republic makes you feel like you are in an interactive Star Wars short film with a solid story, and vast array of alien characters and planets involved with the star wars universe. KOTOR begins with your character (which is custom made) waking up on a ship that is under attack from the Sith, who are after a Jedi on the ship named Bastila. The ship eventually crashes on the nearby planet of Taris, which leads to your character and another character named Carth on a search for Bastila. The story starts off simple enough, but actually develops into a grander tale with some real surprise moments, and a big plot twist that I honestly never saw coming. To compliment the story is a wide cast of characters, each loaded with some really good dialogue with very solid voice acting for the time. A particular character HK-47, has some of the best dialogue in the game, and I had some laugh out loud moments with things that the character said.
Combat in this game is real time with pause, which allows you to pause any moment and select actions for either you or your party members. Combat is very reliant on behind the scenes dice rolls, which dictate if and how much you will hit for when attacking. Generally I was quite happy with the combat, and there are plenty of different combat builds to approach the game with, although toward the end of the game using a light saber unfortunately becomes almost necessary to have a chance against all the other light saber enemies that are at the end of the game.
The biggest negative about this game however, is the load of bugs that are in this game. I am not sure if some of these are due to being a port on the Switch, or if they were present originally, but the sheer amount of bugs I encountered was pretty staggering. The bugs range from amusing, to slightly annoying, to very detrimental. Some of the worst bugs were moments where you were underwater and had to kill sharks with a sonic wave that would cause your character to stop moving after using the item. I had to reload a save file during that section many times. It was very frustrating and really made that section a pain to deal with.
Outside of the bugs though, the game is really fun. It plays heavily on its license and does it justice, every bit of the game feels like something you would encounter in the Star Wars world, and big fans of the movies will definitely enjoy these touches that are in the game. The combat is good, and the story and characters are mostly great, and for an RPG, that is one of the biggest things you could want from a roleplaying game. It just a shame the bugs drag down the overall experience.
Pros:
+ Utilizes the Star Wars license fantastically, and pulls from many of the planets and races present in the films/books
+ Extremely well written characters, with one in particular having hilarious dialogue that had me rolling
+ Story is quite good with a plot twist that completely caught me off guard
+ A good/evil system that is reflected by the light/dark side which affects nearly every action in the game
Cons:
- The game starts off a little slow with the planet Taris being mostly an uninteresting and linear place to explore
- Not very many unique character models in the game resulting in many of the NPC's looking the same
- Toward the end of the game using a light saber almost becomes mandatory when facing the many light saber wielding enemies
- The large amount of bugs in the game really hampered the experience. Especially a couple that would force me to reload a save file

The " Evil " path is wild. Even though the game pushes you towards the Light side, i feel like the Dark side is way more entertaining to play through, with an extremely memorable ending sequence. I mean, holy moley, you can be the biggest scumbag in the galaxy. But the main reason not to sleep on this game is the fact that modern game developers will never even attempt to create something this controversial. For example, Mass Effect 4 Andromeda doesn't even have the dialogue options that might hurt NPCs feelings. Because hurting people's feelings is bad ! In a videogame !

Star Wars KOTOR is an incredible and deep RPG. While sometimes the dialog trees can be a little frustrating (and the choices of being a good guy or bad guy feels like being almost too nice or almost too evil) the overall story and gameplay kept me very invested the entire playthrough. The combat (while functional) felt a little slow and frustrating especially with all the misses. I will definitely be replaying the game now since I choose to be a scout with going the way of the good character, I do want to see what else happens if I choose the more evil options. Definitely recommend this game for the story alone!!Updated 1.5 Years Ago

Picking up Knights of the Old Republic is absolutely still worth your time and money in 2022. There’s an engaging story with a timeless focus on good versus evil, and mechanics that allow you to choose your own destiny – something that modern-day players still absolutely love. The audience shouldn’t be limited to Star Wars fans either, with KOTOR standing out as a fantastic RPG experience regardless of setting. Sure, the graphics and menus haven’t aged well, but that’s entirely moot when you consider just how enjoyable this game is to play. Like rewatching the original Star Wars trilogy today, forget your seamless CGI effects and high definition screen for a few hours and enjoy KOTOR for what it is – you’ll have a fantastic experience that leaves a seriously lasting impression.Full review:
