Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords is one of the best RPGs ever made. The story is set thousands of years before the movies, so while you're still definitely in the Star Wars universe, the experience is new and refreshing.

Obsidian were the developers on this title, and they approached things differently to Bioware, the developers on the first game. The story is much darker than the original, and Obsidian's masterful storytelling really shines through. Both games are amazing and absolute classics, but I think this one is my favourite.

The game was recently patched on Steam and now has achievements (so I do not have them). However, there are still mods out there than can improve the experience. My playthrough was with the Restored Content Mod that restored content cut from the original release due to time constraints.

I've seen most of the story on youtube because that was a better experience than trudging through this stale gameplay and awful level design, nvm how much work it takes to makes this run reasonably with a proper resolution and all. Amazing for its time, sadly just not that great playing it in 2024.

I will always love Knights of the Old Republic, it holds a dear place in my heart and is easily my favorite out of any star wars game, especially in terms of writing and the many, many questions the story brings into the morality and greyline between the jedi and sith. I have played KOTOR throughout my life, and especially with KOTOR II, I take something out of it, even after playing it a second time on the dark side playthrough.

Story
KOTOR II's writing is easily my favorite out of any of the star wars game, and it saddens me that the themes of this game are barely touched ever again, and only certain aspects like what happens to one who has to cut themselves from the force like in fallen order are discussed again. KOTOR II's story focuses on the exile, who was cut from the force due to becoming a wound in the force after the horrors of war have taken place. Many of the characters are what happens to soldiers after a gruesome war that they don't even know if they won or not, and the psychological aftereffects that take place. I simply love the story of KOTOR II and how it handles breaking down the black and white views of the jedi and sith (which are again, retconned now thx disney). During war, people don't see jedi or sith, they see 2 jedi with too much power for anyone to comprehend and flawed beliefs. Now of course there are some hiccups in the story, especially without the restored content mod you will just have blanks in the story that aren't explained due to cut content, and even so the plot isn't very standard, as it mainly focused on the player's journey on learning about the flaws of the force compared to KOTOR I that had a more streamlined plot to experience. With the restored content mod, the story that obsidian wanted to tell is easily digestible, and tackles much stronger messages that no other star wars games has even come close to.

Characters
KOTOR II's characters, especially the cast (and especially one character), are super strong. KOTOR I's cast also had strong overall characters, with some weak ones like Juhanni. KOTOR II's companions are almost all super strong, with the weak ones writing wise either being mira or the disciple, which is a character I didn't experience as I did male all 2 runs. Diving into all the character's backstories can unmask a really engaging story to uncover, and the big ones that stood out are Atton, Bao-Dur, Handmaiden, HK-47 and ESPECIALLY, Kreia. I could easily write a whole essay on Kreia with how interesting her story is to the point where I believe the story and Kreia are one of the same. The one thing I love about the entire cast in KOTOR II is that while they all share pains, especially those who were involved in the war and Malachor V, there is also one common theme... Their beliefs CONSTANTLY clash with each other. KOTOR I's crew easily became friends with each other no problem, but every time you experience a cutscene in the ebon hawk in KOTOR II... the companions while they have some sharing moments, tend to argue, fight against one another, yell over who is right or wrong, aruge about the morality of sending your troops to war knowing they will die no matter. Every time I went into the ebon hawk and saw a cutscene was about to play I would always be excited cause most of the cutscenes are just a joy to experience. While a TON of the scenes with the crew were simply cut, the restored content mod brings these scenes back again and even at some points, enhances them to match what the developers wanted to show till the time issue came sprinting in. Atton's past about being a skilled jedi hunter, HK-47's remarks on how to kill a jedi, Bao-Dur's horror stories of having to build machines that will haunt him back for the war, Visa's home being taken by her, Handmaiden trying to understand why her parents left her, G0-T0's reveal of who he is, and my god Kreia's teachings and her frustrations with both the sith's arrogance and the jedi's lack of action causing them to never understand wars they think they are helping by not interfering, but are instead blinding them of what is really going on around the world. The characters are easily a highlight of this game, and with all the restored content, makes this game a memorable experience.

Gameplay
KOTOR II's gameplay utilizes the same format as the predecessor, a turn-based RPG with dnd mechanics, but makes the dnd mechanics invisible enough to where if you don't understand them, you will never know they even exist. Understanding DND mechanics (specifically 3rd edition, which is similar enough to 5e that I was able to quickly exploit the mechanic), the game was a ton of fun to play through. It is a shame this style of combat is considered out of date to others, and I am glad that BG3 showed that DND mechanics can still have its place in the market, but if there is one issue with the gameplay, is what I said before. If you understand the DND mechanics, the game can easily be broken into bits.

This was among the best Star Wars games I played. The success of the first game carries onto KOTOR2 and delivers. It starts off really slowly in the beginning and drags for a bit. Although it picks up around the middle of the game and finishes strong at the end.

Played on the Series X. The performance was solid and I saw nothing abnormal with the frame rate. There were some game glitches with character movement and duplicate characters spawning in a town when they weren’t supposed to.

Combat is basically the same as the prior game and nothing appears to have changed. I really like using the dark powers over the light ones. The electric shock can be OP during late game and taking out a group of enemies.

Story and dialogue continue to the best of the Star Wars gaming franchise. This should be no surprise because of Obsidian being behind the development. It really felt like I was in the world and was in control of the choices I make. All the companion dialogs were filled with something interesting to say. My favorite character was Kriea because of her master to student relationship. This led me to feel engaged in the story.

As many people mentioned, it suffers from being rushed from having some content stripped prior to release. However, that does not detract from the experience and I had a wonderful time in exploring the world.

Overall, it is worth checking out and playing. This is one of the game that I wanted to knock off the backlog and was happy with the experience.

Pros:
+ Voice acting was done well
+ Combat remains the same
+ Choices feel like they matter

Cons:
- Appears more glitchy than previous game
- Cut content (could be restored on PC)
- Obvious plot direction

I really thought that there wasn't going to be a better star wars story than kotor 1, but the only media that could beat it was its own succesor. Its mindblowing how this story makes you think about every single decision you've made through the game. As the previous entry, there are fun minigames (I love pazaak), engaging side stories and fun characters you can have in your party. As its predecessor, it also has many bugs due to being an outdated game, so you might want to install the restoration mod, which I believe to be the ultimate experience. The gameplay is outdated like the previous game, but engaging once you figure it out. Overall, I believe kotor 1 and 2 to be tied when it comes to ranking, since both games are extraordinary in their own way. Really recommended for star wars fans.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II The Sith Lords
• First time playing
• Sequel to Kotor, but developed by Obsidian Software, the same devs as Fallout: New Vegas
• This is actually Obsidian’s debut game, though the team is made up of refugees from Interplay’s closure
• This means that it Kotor 2 is made by vets in RPG’s, in particular the Fallout series
• Kotor 2 was infamously known for having a rushed production. So rushed that Obsidian had to cut content and didn’t even have enough time for proper polish

I have completed the first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic back in 2016. It was already very old but still managed to be one of my favourite games, with a tight and well-designed plot, fleshed-out characters, meaningful relationships, good "active time" turn-based combat and memorable moments. How can that fantastic entry be proceeded by this mediocre instalment is something I really fail to understand.

You start the game hiding on the "Harbringer", a Republic cruiser, and are immediately sedated by an assassin droid tasked with delivering you to a crime syndicate called the Exchange. Over the duration of the game, you will try to recover your memory, understand why you were exiled from the Force, and what your existence means to the universe. It's more or less what I can tell you, because the story is so muddled that by the end of it, you will need a real fanatic Star Wars fan to explain to you the mambo-jumbo of a plot, the idiotic murmuring about "The Force" that sound like some kind of a lunatic religious manuscript this story tries to convey. I stopped counting the amount of people who finished the game and posted questions about what the hell the story was about.

Once you finish your initial encounters on the "Harbringer" and the first couple of planets, you will have the option of free exploration of four distinct stars. That's okay - but at the same time, the story is meant to progress in a certain order. So, visiting the plants in a suboptimal order means you will finish a later stage of the story before an earlier one. That's like reading chapter 4 of a book, then going back to chapter 1 and hoping that by the time you finish chapters 2 and 3, you will remember what chapter 4 was about. Even worse, certain events trigger only once you finished certain explorations and there are no clues as to where those events have just triggered. I found myself re-running whole sections that I already cleared, hoping to find someone that was not there before.

In most open-world games, exploring is a deviation from the main plot, where you are conducting a side activity while dipping in and out of the main quest - but in KOTOR2, exploration is equivalent to running around trying to figure out the next step of the main quest with almost no rewards attached to that exploration. You might not feel it if you follow a strategy guide or google the "right order" of exploration on the internet, but, if like me, you just jump into it wanting the full experience, this is a poor game design that makes a player waste hours running about and really bring the game down.

The characters in the game all have decent background stories and personalities, but with such a shallow plot, their dialogue and reasons just add to the general gibberish and cryptic elements of this game, and I only found myself interested in the backstory of a couple who’s interest felt more personal and less fanatical. As a result, voice actors, while good, sounded like delivering their lines without conviction.

Graphics were never going to look great in a game 20 years old. I installed many graphic mods which made things a little better and I suspect this looked good back in 2004, but today it's just functional. I was not playing this game for its graphics.

The only redeeming grace of the game was the gameplay. The developers did not change much from the excellent system of the first entry, with a combat system that combines turn-base battles with real-time instructions and the ability to pause and change strategy. Weapon economy has been tightened up and the ability to upgrade and craft weapons was an interesting addition - still, it's hard to play even an excellent game when it has such a poor plot and I was very happy to see the credit screen role while wandering what the hell was this experience all about. Maybe it's telling that a third game in this series never materialised.

I played the Switch version and I didn’t encounter any bugs in my play through. This was post-patch. I can finally see what I’d heard about over the years about this being an unfinished game. Fade out scenes and missing cutscenes. Empty areas. Just very strange. The story gets really good at the end all of a sudden and it kind of gives you an idea of what the game may have been like had it been fully finished. The difficulty also suddenly spikes up dramatically right at the end of the game which I thought was unbalanced, unfair and not fun. Overall, glad I finally played it, but I think I prefer the first KOTOR.

This game took me four years and three new playthroughs to beat, and I’m glad I finally saw it through. It is astounding how great this game turned out considering it was made by a different studio from the first game (Obsidian), it was their first game, AND they had to make it in only a year. Understandably it reuses many assets from the first KOTOR game, so it very much feels the same as the first in terms of gameplay. However, the story does something much different with its tone, subject matter, dialogue and characters. This is a much more thought provoking, morally ambiguous, and darker experience shrouded in many looming mysteries as you play through. It is bleak and ominous, and does an excellent job conveying this sense of galactic despair, hopelessness, and uncertainty. This is a very detailed and well crafted story, in fact I’d say the dialogue is certainly better as well as many of the characters.

While I hardly experienced any bugs at all (many people cite this as an issue with KOTOR 2, but it seems to be a problem on PC and not Xbox where it originally released), I do believe that it’s sometimes clear that this game could have used an extra year to polish and focus the overall experience. This is mostly evident in the fact that half the characters are extremely well written and fleshed out, and the other half hardly have any backstory or motivation to be in the crew. For example, Kreia is easily one of the best characters I’ve ever seen in a video game whereas Bao-Dur has hardly any backstory or personality, despite being set up so well with his ties to the main character and his cold, calculating, calm demeanor. The game also appears half baked in certain sections or planets that just drag on for too long or don’t have nearly as interesting quests and characters. In this way, the game can be a bit inconsistent. In fact, the reason it took me three attempts to actually finish the game is because it suffers from a painstakingly slow start on Peragus. While the tone and atmosphere is really interesting, it could and should have been about 10% as long as it is. It’s such a chore to play through that I bet it turns off many players from unveiling the great story that this game has to offer, including me at first, and I adore the first game.

While I wish it was more polished and made a tighter experience, Knights of the Old Republic 2 improves upon its predecessor in multiple ways. Its dialogue, characters, morally challenging situations, tone, overall story, and gameplay/leveling are all done exceptionally well for the time they had to make it. However, it falls short in a few sequences, namely in the excruciatingly slow beginning and the inconsistent quality of characters and planets. This inconsistency keeps this game from being as good if not better than the original, therefore I can’t give it the same score I gave the first game at a 9. That being said, I commend that Obsidian did something new and different, and that they crafted a detailed and intriguing story bolstered with fascinating characters and dialogue. It’s slow at first, but I would say this is one of the most well crafted, morally gray, and unique Star Wars experiences ever made. 8/10 (Great)

Star Wars; Knights of the Old Republic - The Sith Lords is a fantastic game. Even though they had to remove some content from the game for them to be able to release only 1 year after the original KotoR. It still feels like a full package, especially if you use the Restored Content community mod, that restores some of the content that was cut. The game is a worthy sequel to one of the best Star Wars games ever and continues the story of the Old Republic in a satisfying way. Hopefully Aspyr will get the chance to remaster this game as well after the KotoR remake comes out. If you love the KotoR and the Old Republic Era of Star Wars, you'll love this game too.

Bioware knew better than to try to meet the publisher's demand for a sequel to KOTOR1 in one year. Obsidian made a valiant effort, but unfortunately the rushed development very much shows. The writing is KOTOR2's saving grace, though the handover to another developer is clearly felt tonally and stylistically. But in terms of gameplay, it's a buggier, messier, uglier, unevenly paced retread of the original, and the storytelling suffers from similar lack of refinement. A good game, but a few coats of polish short of a great one.

Even with all the patches and the restored content mod that supposedly helps stabilize the game, getting KotOR 2 to run was a nightmare. I scoured through several forums trying to find a solution to the constant crashing issues I had, at first immediately after character creation and, following a complete reinstall, just after the LucasArts and Obsidian logos before the title screen. The workaround I eventually discovered was to check the “disable movies” option, which of course did cause the story to feel a little disjointed. I ended up watching these short movies online as it was usually obvious when one was supposed to take place. I experienced problems with holograms appearing as fully fleshed out people, and some meshes used for droids, vibroswords, and doors appeared slightly transparent, but I chose to ignore these issues considering how difficult it was to get the game running in the first place. The texture quality could be set to high, but turning on the anti-aliasing or ansiotropy settings would cause a crash. To say that there are stability issues would be an understatement.

The gameplay of KotOR 2 is virtually identical to the previous installment for better or worse, with the addition of some new animations and models, a crafting system, and minor tweaks under the hood. There are some annoying gameplay flaws, such as how all buffs display as the same incomprehensible blue arrows on a character’s portrait, making it near impossible to tell what has worn off and what hasn’t, and a dreadfully stupid AI that will charge headfirst through a minefield literally two seconds after a follower says “watch out for mines.” Even with the battle behaviors like aggressive, ranged, and stationary, I never felt in control of my party members or their sense of self-preservation. The battle system, though not very deep, is effective but the general interface is clunky — scrolling through individual force powers, lightsaber styles, items, attacks, shields, stimulants, it all gets tedious. It is also incredibly easy to break the game, easy enough to almost convince me that it was intentional to create the feeling that the player is a powerful force user, but this happens so early on that I must dismiss this assumption for the simpler explanation of general balance issues. The game rarely poses any challenge.

There is unfortunately a noticeable lack of polish found in KotOR 2, a result of the development team having been rushed for an early delivery that is most apparent in the buggy actions of NPCs during dialogue, though the dependency on some protocol droids speaking in bleeps while possessing copious amounts of written dialogue is a red flag as well. There is an astounding amount of content cut from the game, with the majority of the restored content mod consisting of small improvements, such as adding additional dialogue options, character interactions, and smoothing out some questlines, all of which are near indistinguishable from the original final product. The mod also includes an entire planet in its unfinished state, but it is a chore to complete with a choppy frame rate, mind numbingly boring quests with lots of backtracking, and the worst voice acting in the duology. This section of the game never left beta testing and it shows, and with all the good the restoration project brings to the table, this planet is 100% mandatory to complete the story. Also restored in the tail end of the game is a mission so difficult it borders on the impossible without cheats or adjusting the difficulty and running for dear life. Apparently, the absence of a character is supposed to be explained in this mission, but it is never touched on and creates confusion later on. The pacing is flawed right off the bat. There’s nothing wrong with a slow burn, but 14 hours to get started is a little much. The ending feels like it’s dragged on for a lot longer than necessary as well, and the additional content in between that drastically alters the flow of things definitely doesn't help.

With all the glaring issues and leftover assets that were left virtually untouched, much of the time, KotOR2 feels like an ambitious fan project. The writing is the biggest take away and is truly the reason why the game is considered worth a playthrough at all. There are moments of sheer genius in character development and concept, with slight alterations to the lore that make a fairly one-dimensional, black and white universe appear in an (un)pleasant grey. Good deeds and morals do not always yield good results and vise-versa. This simple concept is the driving force behind every action of the player and creates thought provoking situations, rather than the prototypical good guy/bad guy "morality" found in many other games. The diamond is in the rough though. KotOR 2 ends on a cliffhanger after setting up for a sequel that never happened, or in my experience, ended abruptly since I disabled movies.

To say that I adored this game would be underselling it; however, even with the latest TSLRCM mod fixing so many of the bugs, this was one of the buggiest games I've ever played. To be fair, the buggiest parts of the game were mods themselves - M4-78 was such a problem for me, and I had to uninstall the Extended Enclave mod entirely, but considering how much content the TSL RCM mod adds back to the game, how many bugs it fixes... think we can easily say that this game has some problems. Part of me wants to play this game as it was released, no fan patches to correct what Obsidian couldn't due to the predetermined release date, but I love what is here so damn much that I can't imagine not having it all available. A must-play with these corrective mods, but it's in no way plug and play.

A wonderful sequel to the original. It brought in new tales to live through, and a great overarching story to keep you going.

One of my favourite RPGs of all time. First time I felt like my choices really mattered in a video game.

What a superb game! It takes everything that made the first game great and adds on several layers of depth. The story is, in my opinion, even better than the first game. Combat is mostly the same (excellent) combat from the first game, with new powers, feats, weapons, etc, and non-combat interaction and exploration is very similar, almost identical in fact, to the original. The designers acknowledged that the first game was great, beloved even, and chose wisely to not deviate from what made it great in the sequel.

So why not 100%?? Well, to be honest, the game simply wasn't finished, and notoriously is missing a lot of content, including an entire planet, and several sub-plots and quests. Still great, it did mar an otherwise superb game.

However, I played using the Restored Content mod - a fan created mod using the original resources, completing the game. The Restored Content mod, along with the M4-78 planet add-on (also cut content that the fans finished), restores the game to what it should have been all along, and deserves 100%.

Any knocks against the game, other than the missing/restored content? I can't think of much, other than maybe M4-78 was cut wisely in the event of a lack of development time - it's a little less fun than the rest of the game and a bit tedious with unending back and forth fetch type quests. But, of course, it's optional, and worth the loot if you can put in a couple hours to grind past the first part.

Ah, KOTOR 3, where are you?

This is the best Star Wars Game I have played so far.
Absolutely astonishing story writing. Sadly the game wasn't finished in every way. But with TSLRCM as an absolute must, you get the experience almost as intended.
There are obvious balance issues if you going to the end. Meaning I was seriously overpowered. But it was fun, because the animations were so darn good during Lightsaber Fights.

All in all the only drawbacks are with the short development. But everything else is just awesome.

This is my favorite game of all time. The story is amazing, constant twists and turns and beautiful moments. The characters are wonderful and because of the influence system, building a relationship with them feels like a special accomplishment. The combat is unique, I have never played a game with combat like this (other than KOTOR 1) and probably never will again. But while the open world and side quests weren't terrible, I personally felt that they were better in KOTOR 1.

KOTOR 2 is an excellent RPG marred by an alleged rushed development cycle leading to some minor flaws towards the end of the game.

This is my favorite Star Wars story of all time. And it is really amazing how all your little decisions play out with TSLRCM installed.

Not played it through since it first came out. Still a jawdropping game. Wish modern star wars was this good.
