Solid Bioware game, definitely more classic RPG than their subsequent ones. Great story, good characters, decent tactical gameplay that can sometimes be a bit much, you will get your ass kicked if you're not prepared. Love giving gifts to my party members so everyone likes me even if I'm a horrible person.

One of my favourite RPG's of that era. So edgy but does it in such a great way. A damn shame where this series went after it.

The story of this game was sooo good, I love that we had specific origins and backstories for each of the characters based on the race you choose (city elf superiority), it helped me feel more connected to my character which was something I struggled with in later games (Inquisition ://). The romances in origins make me weep and I love the gift giving mechanics. However, the combat still sucks in this one... You literally just click a button and stand there. A lot of my frustration came from the combat sequences. Also Oghren sucked, he brought down my rating I won't lie.

First off, I need to get something off my chest, I played this game for the first time in undergrad and for some reason, I was listening to a lot of Eminem while I played it, so whenever this game comes up, I think of Eminem and I get "Till I Collapse" stuck in my head and it's just a weird association, because I really like this game, and honestly don't care for Eminem that much, like his music is fine but I don't listen to it regularly, you know?

Anyways, I got to this game well after release and still had a blast. It was my first Bioware game, so I was unaware just how much story was going to come at me, but it can definitely be classified as an epic. Between the overarching plot and then all of the available companions and their quests, I wouldn't be surprised if you could fill up several novels' worth of material. (And maybe they have some, obviously I've never looked for any or anything lol)

I can't say it's this crazy original story by any means; you become a part of the Grey Wardens, an elite demon-killing faction, and are charged with killing the Archdemon or some such so they don't destroy the world!!! That is, of course, heavily paraphrased but is essentially the goal. What makes it special is the detail that goes into all of these "stereotypical" characters and settings. For instance, depending on the race and class combination you choose at the beginning of the game, there are six different opening sequences that you may experience, each vastly different. Once the beginning is over, the six introductions will merge and the story will become cohesive for each character from there, but it was a really cool mechanic, I thought. Plus, NPCs would react to what combination you chose, and treat you based off of that, which was a cool tidbit that helped immersion.

The gameplay was really interesting, I thought. It could be this intricate system where you're controlling each character and using their skills to maximum potential and seeing everything from a top-down view to strategically plan each move, OR you could take the Fefnir route, playing from a classic third-person perspective and allowing your companions to be guided by the AI, which seemed to do the trick most of the time. I did dabble with this "RTS-lite" control scheme, but I rarely play on the hardest difficulty in games, so it just felt unnecessary. I could see how that would be massively impactful if you chose to fight some of the harder encounters on the hardest difficulty though, and applaud them for having that sort of option.

This game is truly a staple in the genre of medieval fantasy RPGs, and I think fans of the genre could easily lose themselves in all this has to offer.

I love RPGs and will sink many hours into a good one, and needless to say this is an excellent one! From the studio that brought you the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights series, this is an epic fantasy story set in the kingdom of Ferelden.

Choose your race and class, the combination of which determines which of six different origin stories you experience. You are then recruited into the Grey Wardens and begin your quest against the evil Darkspawn.

I played through all the content in this Utlimate Edition, which includes the Awakening expansion and all the content packs, most of which I found to be excellent and well worth my time.

Truly deserving of a remake or a remaster, dragon age is a game of it's time with wonky controls and blatant misogyny and fantasy racism to boot. But it's despite these flaws, underneath we find a game with heart and meaningful insights into the world around it. Not only does this game contain dragons it also has political conflicts and moral quandaries for the players to solve.

Fraught with problems with it is, this game struck a sweet spot for me, in both the time when I came upon and played it, and where it stands upon the CRPG "spectrum." To me, this game is the perfect example of "casualizing" a game enough to draw in a new audience while still maintaining the important aspects of the genre. True, you were limited to 3 classes, the stat system was unexceptional, the secondary "skills" outside of persuasion were superfluous, and the skill trees was simple. It still had satisfying character progression when you leveled, specializations to spice things up, and the stats were still meaningful enough to differentiate characters within the same class with different builds or bulk levels.

Narratively, a lot of the dialogue choices were illusory, and overall it was a fairly linear game, but the illusion was well constructed and traveling from hub to hub with a large amount of random encounters still made the world feel alive for me. There were meaningful choices to make at the end of arcs, and the Landsmeet was an awesome feat of writing and world building.

The game visually was behind the times even at release, but it still was an impressive cinematic experience on console.

Viewed in a vacuum I think this game is not only a great first step for a new franchise, but a great standalone game if some of the changes in future Dragon Age games sour one's tongue.

Vastly enjoyed the vast majority. I have some gripes, most of which can be forgiven for the game's age. Some of the DLC feel a bit thrown-together, but the base game is impeccable. DAO's particular style of combat and levelling doesn't vibe great with me, but playing on easy solved most of those issues (except Awakening's final boss, that was no fun). Fascinating wordbuilding, compelling companions, and good plot. Checks most of my boxes, and I loved spending the time on it. Big good time.

I review games with all games starting at 5/10 (Average) and then deduct/add for negatives and positives:

Overall Thoughts:

Dragon Age: Orgins (DA:O), is probably one of my favourite games. I've played it multiple times, doing nightmare runs, solo character runs, and have modded the game a few times with extras to spice things up. In this run I used the Dog Whistle mod (gives you your dog as a summon) and Dragon Age Redesigned (Character model/location/object redesign mod) this may have resulted in some texture issues and a lot of crashes for me, even with the 4GB patch, so I do recommended most players play without mods first.

Graphics are dated, even by the original release in 2009 the graphics were not ground breaking, the weapons especially look very "World of Warcraft" levels of camp fantasy, chunky, silly and unwieldy. However despite this the game is serviceable, the characters look human enough to be recognisable and don't enter the uncanny valley for me. There is a charm to the goofiness of some of the art assets but they are definitely bad, even for back then. This isn't a game to play for it's graphics, though I have to admit the cinematics looked great.

Music is good, honestly after so much playing the music has become iconic, from the intro to the simple travel music, it fits the setting well and feels genuinely well used in action sections, in calm sections and in cinematics.

Gameplay is probably the most contentious thing, I think when I speak to people about the series a lot say DA:O is the best, for many reasons, dialogue, character creation, and the story. But a lot of people seem to prefer the combat of Dragon Age 2, or Inquisition. I disagree and find the combat on par with the next titles, it's a lot more tactically based, but the range of the camera, the focus on automation of tactics, giving characters instructions, combining abilities, like freezing and enemy and then throwing a giant magic rock at them to instantly kill them, plus the huge range of specialisations you and your companions could utilise feels liberating compared to the sequels.

While the gameplay is a lot slower than the sequels, it's meant to be, and for those that enjoy the methodical and tactical nature of the game, this game gives it in shovel loads.

Story wise the game is fairly lacklustre, it's not trying to break boundaries with it's overall frame, and there isn't much to be said about the content of the story. While there is a rich and overly extensive lore for the games, what really makes the story enjoyable is the smaller interactions between the player and it's NPC companions, as well as a lot of the minor characters you meet (this doubles as the sequels go on, as previous NPCs return, if they survive). Building friendships and even romances and rivalries with companions is cool, knowing that Sten is stern, to the point but values loyalty and strength is an aspect to dialogue I hadn't experienced before playing any other game, wading through dialogue to make an NPC happy to get a reward later is likely why people think the story is good.

Recommend:

Yes, a classic fantasy game from Bioware, players who are fans of tactics, character creation and levelling skills will enjoy this. One of my favourite games of all time.

Positives:

+Great music
+Extremely fun tactical gameplay
+Enjoyable and varied characters and dialogue
+Huge amounts of content/DLC for the player character
+Great variety in character creation/origin and combat styles

+5

Negatives:

-Despite being on console, controller options are not native

Gameplay
-Can go deep into micromanaging characters
-Combat is done via hotkey bar
-Can pause combat
-No jumping
-3 companions can be in group at once
-Area's don't respawn loot or enemies. This can cause boring times running through areas to leave or if you missed an item you ahve to go back searching for.

Audio/Video
-music off
-environmental noise can be creepy sometimes
-Had a weird bug that caused me to have to reduce from max settings to medium settings about 20 hours
-Lots of large frame drops
-I recommend restarting the game regularly.
-Also do a save rotation with no less than 3 files. Save after every fight, load screen, cut scene. A couple bugs caused me to lose at least an hours play time.

Story
-There is so much information about the world
-Decisions really matter. Choices, Dialogue, Relationships, No ability/spell/skill do overs.
-There was plenty of DLC to try
-Some replayability.

Back in 2009, DAO would've been an amazing RPG. I was at the right age then with time to burn on long-ass games.
Starting 2022 it has taken me 10 months from start til end to finish DAO, I played 69 hours (in-game counter) - about 81 hours on Steam though!
I couldn't find good enough reasons to come back to DAO every night after work, just goes to show you that even a good game ages. Despite my reluctance this was a good experience but I'm completely off CRPGs for some time. If you don't already own it, don't bother buying it now, just play DA Inquisition.

I would say it is clearly among the top 20 computer role-playing games ever made. Epic storyline, rich lore, many choices along the storyline, plenty of companions, etc.

The tons of voiced reactions and banter is astonishing notably. For example, once you change a situation in an area, the citizens all have adapted voiced reactions. Each companion has many dialogues as you improve the relationship/trust. They put a lot of love/work into this game.

If you like CRPG/RPG, I see no reason why you would not enjoy it.

Consequences for choices and the requirement to pick sides in the game really make your choices matter. The different outcomes of important choices and general dialogue choices can be used to create a personality for your Warden (your character). I really like the choice of an origin for your Warden and how the origin doesn't directly impact the story after the origin story but it is often brought up in dialogue and when you are passing through the area of your characters origin. Lots of mods you can download to enhance your experience with DA:O. I love all the characters and companions as they have relatively complex/deep backstories and personalities.
Only issues are that there are quite a few bugs (often can be fixed with mods) and that the graphics aren't the best (can also be fixed with mods) but that is understandable for a game made in 2009.

I do think that the writing is uneven - for example, with the Origins. Played as a female elf mage, and one of my biggest complaints is how little grounding that gives you for your character outside of what we see directly. Turns out that almost every single other Origin is leagues better at communicating who your character is. Having said all that - I really think that the gameplay pales in comparison to the first Witcher game, which came out two years ago (and presumably was on the same engine. Where this shines is the sheer amount of choices you get, how much your actions determine what happens. Was stunned just now, discovering Dragon Age Keep, that apparently Wynn and Leliana can die if you decide the wrong way during the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest? Wild. And of course, unlike the promise of Mass Effect, it seems like there are very few "canon" choices. Makes the Dragon Age wiki one of the most confusing things to navigate, but it's a hell of an accomplishment. I do hope the next game is less of a slog - could really do without the top-down isometic view personally.
