Narratively speaking, this is one of the best Halo games out there, not to mention, in the broader context of prequels. Everything you like about Halo is here, and then some. What makes this even more impressive, is that it does all this without Master Chief and Cortana.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Halo reach held up great over time. I had never played it before, so I decided to play all of the Halo’s and I started with Reach. Through a fresh set of eyes, the game was quick to beat and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Great assortment of weapons, enemies, and vehicles. Not many abilities, but the abilities that were there were fun. One of the best endings of any game I’ve played, even though it felt somewhat rushed.Updated 2 Months Ago

Haven't played the previous halo game so I don't understand the connection of the story. The game was very enjoyable with a few annoying moments(covenant vehicle that shoots blue bombs that destroy you). Large variety of weapons. Night vision is broken because it highlights enemies and you can use it even at day. Bombs are op in this game, you die instantly and towards the end everything is throwing bombs at you and shooting blue bombs of death. Also, one retarded detail in the combat system: instead of picking up ammo for the gun you carry, you gotta SWITCH the gun you have for the same gun with different ammo amount. On the other hand, the ending was incredible. Truly one of the legendary video game endings. To emphasize, the ending gave the game's rating a boost.I give an 8/10, very good.Updated 3 Months Ago

Halo: Reach is good for being a 14 year old game(2010 - 2024). Interesting story, but the maps all kinda feel the same by the end. As a player, I did not feel too connected to all the characters around Noble Six, but the urgency of Reach being destroyed was there from the beginning which creates an intense atmosphere.8/10

Halo Reach is what happens when a developer has refined their formula over several games while simultaneously making awkward design decisions that do not actually evolve said formula. But before that, let me just say that the campaign is amazing, it drags its feet a bit in the first half but the second half might be the best Halo has ever been, the levels are so diverse and memorable, although the character writing ranges from good to mediocre as one member of Noble team is memorable for all the wrong reasons. Reach is a fantastic setting, with levels like Long Night of Solace and New Alexandria/Exodus really establishing an oppressive tone that very few games manage to achieve which is supported by Reach's fantastic score, also making Noble-6 literally you was a fantastic decision. The multiplayer on the other hand is where a lot of Reach's problems start to become more noticeable, although it is still good and it's new invasion mode is fantastic... assuming you can find a game for it. The additions of reticle bloom and armor abilities bog down the gameplay, they work fine in 8v8 but many aspects of the multiplayer are not well balanced, armor abilities either range from useless (invisibility) or broken (sprint + sword/hammer), bloom slows the game down to much, removing dual-wielding nerfs every weapon that used to have it, and the vehicles are imbalanced. Forge mode is greatly expanded but it shoots itself in the foot by having an overwhelming majority of the objects by this bland fuckass gray, although the ingenuity of most forge modes nullifies that one issue and Firefight is included from the start although it isn't really iterated on.Updated 4.5 Months Ago

Gameplay 3/3 really well done again yet again. Has that strong really great combat from halo 2 with a few new ideas that are fun and new enemies/combat situations. Story 2.5/3 the overall impact/importance of the plot on the halo franchise is not much. The interactions between the main characters are really strong.
Visuals 2/2 great style and variety of locations great enemy and character design
Audio 2/2 great music and voice acting and sound effects

I'm already biased on this one because it was my personal favorite Halo game, back in the Xbox 360 days. That said, I think my nostalgia holds up pretty well. This feels like the culmination of everything Bungie had created up until this point; the gameplay is at its most refined, the music is as incredible as always, the story is solid and at times genuinely emotional. Playing this through again, this time having the context of what this is a prequel to, made it that much more impactful. I loved having the focus shift from Master Chief and onto other spartans, seeing as we never see many of those in the previous games. Little things like being able to customize Noble Six down to their gender also made them feel more personalized, unique; I LOVED being able to play as a female spartan for the first time. My only real critique is that the abundance of UNSC weapons in missions made it so that I wasn't forced to switch weapons very often, a component I felt was key to what made the previous games so exciting; but at the same time, I feel it makes sense in this setting, and for these characters.Updated 6.5 Months Ago

Halo: Reach is a great swan-song for Bungie. It's probably my favourite out of the series so far. It has the same significance and story impact of the original trilogy, but grounds it in a surprisingly human and emotional way. The Noble squad might not be as vulnerable as 'The Rookie' from Halo 3: ODST, but they are certainly more grounded characters than Master Chief. There is a palpable feeling of dread and foreboding thorough the game as we know that Reach is destined to fall and that all these Spartans will eventually die. It's clear that Rogue One took huge inspiration from this game in terms of representing an important in-universe event which we know is destined to fail, and yet still causing us to relate to the characters therein despite this. The level design does feel a little more scripted and narrative focused at points than the original Halo trilogy. I think this benefits the story in some instances and detracts from it a little in others, there's nothing quite like Halo in the FPS genre so it was a little disconcerting to see Reach taking keys from other popular FPS games in the way it portrayed it's narrative. I'm uncertain whether this will remain my favourite Halo game, as I suspect the original Trilogy (and of course ODST) may have more emotional significance to me personally, but it's clear that Reach is the culmination of everything Bungie was working towards and is a fantastic end-cap for their work on the series. I'm going to take a bit of a break before jumping into Halo 4 or 5, given how divided people seem over these 343 Industries entries. I'm excited to see how Master Chief's story continues into a newer generation of consoles, however I'm concerned that they likely won't recapture the spark that Bungie brought to the series. If I had any hopes in particular it would be that the newer entries try and recapture the more open design of the original trilogy rather than embracing some of the more linear, narrative-focused sections from Reach. Bungie pulled these sections off well, but I fear another studio may not be able to do it in a way which still feels like Halo. At the end of the Bungie era all I can say is that Halo is Xbox's best exclusive franchise and also the best straight-up FPS series I've played (well maybe apart from Bioshock.)Updated 7.5 Months Ago

More like 8,5.This game aged well. I had a blast playing it for the fist time on Series X in 2020. In the highest moments it feels as mesmerizing and immersive as Half-Life 2.
Pros:
+ Art-direction. I didn't expect 10 year old game to look that good. The cutscenes are great. Especially the ones with the spaces and space ships.
+ Spartan HUD. It feels as a real part of the armor.
+ Controls. Oh my, that the best-feeling shooter I played on consoles. Still not a mouse, but great.
+ Variety. The missions don't get boring.
+ Story structure. I like how this game doesn't feed the player with exposition. Stuff is happening and you adapt and it's great.
+ The score. It took me some time to adjust to it. Because to some extent it feels similar in vibe to Russian TV show Бригада. And this music disagrees to go to background. It's a full orchestral score. But it's definitely epic.
Cons:
- Enemy AI is stupid at many instances. It doesn't affect gameplay that much. But it does affects immersion in the story.
- I knew the ending before starting the game. Despite this being my first Halo game ever.
- The dark side of variety is the depth of gameplay. Vehicle missions feel much more shallow than other ones.
- The cities are kinda empty. And don't feel lived in.

"It didn't take long for Reach to fall: our enemy was ruthless. Efficient. But they weren't nearly fast enough. For you had already passed the torch. And because of you, we found Halo, unlocked its secrets, shattered our enemy's resolve. Our victory — your victory — was so close, I wish you could have lived to see it. But you belong to Reach. Your body, your armor — all burned and turned to glass. Everything… except your courage. That, you gave to us. And with it, we can rebuild."

One of the best Halo games, Reach is the story of a losing war. You begin the game knowing that you're going to lose and the planet Reach will go down. This makes the game bleaker than any other title, with apocalpytic levels of the Covenant smashing the human race without problems. You squad of Spartan super soldiers commit a final act of bravery to accomplish the mission - deliver Cortana to Keyes so he can unite her and Master chief in Halo CE. One of the best combat desings in the entire series are here. This is way better than Halo 4, 5 or Infinite, the sad, perfect, farewell gift from Bungie.Updated 10.5 Months Ago

More Halo, that's basically it. Some minor annoyances such as holding interact to grab health kits and you still often die from a random grenade hold it back from being really fun.Story feels contrived, but then again both ODST and Reach feel like filler Halos.
What I do find strange is that the collection places this first, must be fun to then go to clunky old Combat Evolved.
