SMB1 super sayain mode.Good
- tanooki is cool
- improved animations and visuals
- world map
- innovative level designs. Like rising water with chomping fish.
- innovative enemies. Jumping blocks. Grabbing shells.
- sliding down Hills was fun.
- boo enemies are unique. Forcing player to face different ways while platforming.
- new cool things: quick sand physics, boo, rising water levels, screen wrapping left and right sides was incorporated well in to the levels.
- airship levels were a nice challenge
Bad
- I wish the game gave a small guide on how to fly with the tanooki. I actually had to look up how to do.

Updated 3.5 Weeks Ago

Not a huge retro gamer.... I think that a lot of newer games are better due to the enhancements of their capability to do things... like New Super Mario Bros Wii does everything this does but better... I can play with all the boys in that one! Like I understand this has aged well and is still playable compared to a lot of NES games, but I dunno fam I like newer gamesUpdated 2 Months Ago

It is exciting that they have managed to make a game this replayable, fun and have many styles of play. Considering the limitations of the time it is solid. However the game getting hard after 7th world absurdly. So i decided that no point in torturing myself and i quit the game. Overall i liked a lot but playing after 7th world has no point.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

I played the original SMB a lot as a kind, but its NES sequels were not widely available on our local market. So 2024 was my first introduction to the SMB 3, though I played the more recent Odyssey and 3D World. The effect is genuinely stunning. I spent dozen of hours in the NES finest platformers as Felix the Cat, Adventure Island series and Duck Tales, but none of them can challenge SMB 3 in variety and ability to surprise.
All 8 worlds feel really different, and the game introduces new game mechanics and enemies up to the very end. Smooth controls, fair difficulty up to World 8, plenty of minigames and secrets, nice music and graphics and familiar characters: this game is a perfect sample of the NES platformer, and hardly any of the modern indie pixel products can compete with it.

The platforming here is much improved from its previous game adding more variation to it such as bullet bill jumping, music blocks, POW box to create coins, and many more. They even have different locations like desert and ice to add more location variety as well. My favorite would have to be World 7, where you jump from moving platforms and control the direction of where to go. Coming after SMB2 which I didn't personally enjoy, it felt good coming back to a more familiar feel of a Mario game. The world map design was nice seeing as it gives you multiple paths to take later on.
Onto what I disliked, I wasn't a fan of the boss battles. Most of them were just step and repeat, and it's over quickly. Next, I didn't like the ship sidescrolling levels, because as it moves, chances are that you jump on fire that you couldn't see. Lastly, while I do appreciate the inclusion of power-ups here, I rarely ever use them aside from fire, or raccoon since their acquired during in-game levels. There's very little distinction between the raccoon suit and the tanooki suit as the latter has Mario turn into a statue, but I rarely ever used it, and mainly for flying across levels.
Overall, it was a fine game for me but I didn't enjoy it too well. I suppose I heard a lot of praise about this game which gave me high expectations so that's perhaps on me and some of the issues that held it back.

Super Mario Bros 3 is a massive evolution from the first 2 games. The DNA of all Mario games in the future is in here, from the enemies, the bosses the world maps and the gambling games. This is a great game with a bunch of interesting short levels. The start is a little slow and easy but the later levels increase in difficulty and some of the last levels are really difficult. I had a lot of fun playing through this one!Updated 4 Months Ago

Completed all the levels on the NES mini with savestates and even then I'm ashamed to say that I was as often irritated by the game as I enjoyed it. This is probably the most impressive jump from one game to another during a single console generation: it is so packed with new ideas not only in regards of the overworld structure, but also when it comes to different mechanics for different stages and the power ups here of course are banging. However, there are a lot of bullshit levels where you die because you don't know what's coming next in this relatively small viewable area. Moreover, you have to restart the whole world if you lose all your lives, but I'm already irritated enough by some of them. Savestates certainly ruined the part where I should collect and manage power ups for different occasions, but I didn't second-guess using them. Maybe next time with me being more experienced with the game I'll replay it again by it's own rules, but that probably not going to be anytime soon. It controls great though, I love how high you can jump in this one with great maneuverability. Sometimes though two button limitation gets on my when you have to hold an item and use tanooki suit simultaneously.Updated 5 Months Ago

Super Mario Bros. 3 raised our expectationsUndoubtedly a standout game on the NES and still worth playing today. A mindblowing amount of new content, and exciting new powerups to play with, brilliant. It suffers a little bit from hints of repetitiveness and ideas that weren't ready to be published, but it's hard to be too harsh on this game. It deserved the top scores when it came out, and if it were released for the first time today by an indie developer I'm sure it would do almost as well.

Audio 2/2 great Mario music and great Mario sound effects
Story 1/1 it's another simple Mario story and it definitely does what it needs to

Super mario bros 3 has quick bite sized levels that were perfect to just hop in and play. This is the fastest I've EVER beat a game start to finish. There was so many unique items and mechanics that I haven't seen in modern mario games. The frog power up and hammer power up were looked awesome and felt really fun to play with. Picking up blocks and throwing was also super cool! I have no idea why they haven't brought these back. You could even use items in the overworld to unlock paths. Why isn't this in modern games ? I do wish you had more invincibility after you got hit. Restarting the world/last castle when you gameover is cringe but it is a NES game so I give it a little leeway. The biggest offender though is how much they use Boom Boom as the boss of castle with little variety of how you fight him. Overall it's a very fun fast paced platformer with minor problems that are just an era of time.Updated 6 Months Ago

Game has charm, creativity, and most importantly high fun factor. The art style really grows on you. Great music. Probably the best NES game, definitely the 2nd best 2D Mario. But still below World. (Levels feel more rigid, less flexibility, more waiting)Replayability is high due to branching paths and shortcuts. Plus the lvls themselves are mostly short and sweet so they beg to be replayed. A game that seems fun to master.

Although I consider the Super Mario franchise to be one of my absolute favorites in the whole entire world, at the time of writing this review, I have yet to play many of this series' most important and influential titles. It's not that I don't have any interest in them, it's just that, being a child of the DS and Wii era, I missed out on many of these games simply because of bad timing. In all seriousness, what 10-year-old wants to look for a way to emulate Super Mario World just to honor a long history of videogame evolution they'd only be able to fully understand years into their 20s? So, like any normal kid, I'd just settle for my 15th playthrough of Super Mario Galaxy 2 instead. But now that I'm an adult, I realize how absurd it is to consider myself such a huge fan of this Italian plumber and not have beaten many of his old classics. So here I am now, attempting to fix that!I began my journey last year with a complete playthrough of Super Mario 64. While it had its ups and downs, it was still an enjoyable experience, and it even felt somewhat familiar. I'd take it that's because I just knew a lot about that game, even though I had never played it all the way through myself. That wasn't the case for Super Mario Bros. 3. The entirety of my knowledge regarding this one title is that it was yet another highly acclaimed and deeply beloved platformer from Mario's earlier years, probably responsible for introducing plenty of franchise mainstays that I've known and enjoyed in future games. And I was mostly right. But it's hard to really grasp the sheer impact of SMB3 when you're looking at it retroactively. Sure, I can understand just fine what cultural impact a piece of media has had on the world, but it's difficult to really be amazed by it when all of it is old news to me. I guess I should've just been a kid in the 90s, huh?
So, what did I think of Super Mario Bros. 3? Well... it's a classic, alright. And by that I mean it's old. Really old. I love how this game looks and I really dig the soundtrack, but there's just no sugarcoating how truly awful these controls actually feel. Hit detection is a massive pain, and it is especially noticeable when using some of these power-ups. I've always had my personal gripes with the Super Leaf and the Tanooki Suit, and the story's really not any different here. It feels terrible trying to get a hit in when you have to be so goddamn close to your enemies and the attack animation is as slow as a snail. And the fact that there are 3 variations of this power-up doesn't help its case either. Seriously, did we really need THREE separate versions of what is essentially the exact same thing? The game itself barely utilizes their abilities to their full extent and it only helps to make the other power-ups feel really underappreciated. The Hammer Suit is the undisputed best option here and I only got to use it two, maybe three times. Even the Fire Flower feels strangely absent.
The levels in Super Mario Bros. 3 are extremely short, which makes it hard to get a good impression of them when they all go by in a flash. There's also not a ton of discerning gimmicks between each stage, which makes the worlds feel like one giant desert or ice-themed level, depending on their assigned motif. Apart from an oddball here and there, they're all pretty good, though I can't imagine you'd be able to get an honest answer from someone should you ask them to specify what their favorite SMB3 level is. I think the lack of collectibles also adds to this feeling. Just getting to the end of the stage doesn't feel like enough of an accomplishment to me. Then again, I'm an overachiever, and there's really nothing wrong with games being a one-and-done kind of engagement. Especially games that came out over 30 years ago. Still, I can't help but feel like they could've done something more to differentiate these levels a little bit. The only ones that stuck out to me were the freaking tank levels because of how out of place they felt and the few ones that played kind of like a labyrinth. Everything else I just sort of mushed together.
I fear I'm only giving this game a 7 out of respect for all that it has done. I had some fun with it, but I'd hardly say it was one of the most memorable experiences I've had with a Mario title. And that's okay, I guess. We often fail to acknowledge how much our childhood discoveries influence our tastes and opinions. Some of my favorite games are absolute garbage and I know I'd never feel the way I do about them had I not discovered them when I was a snot-nosed, oblivious little kid who didn't know any better. I failed to mention this earlier, but I really enjoyed this plot about the Koopalings turning actual royalty into animals. When are they going to start causing this level of mischief again?

The platforming GOAT. I never beat this as a kid, and I understand why. At 36 years old, I needed to abuse save states to make it to the end. (Some of those World 8 levels are absolutely brutal!) With all that said, finally playing through this childhood classic in its entirety was a pleasure. The precision of control. The way Mario picks up momentum and allows for variations in your jumps. The game was groundbreaking at the time, and still holds up when it comes to pure platforming mechanics. I’m happy to finally cross this one off my bucket list, and give it the appreciation it deserves.

A instantanic classic, it's the first time that I had played complete, with all the worlds and all levels, although I played the "All Star version", this still being a NES game, and is fascinating the complete game that it was. In 8 bits they had achieved add new power-ups, (the leaf, the suits, tanooki) items usefuls (flute, cloud, "P", music box), a map, mini games, a better system of save data. Music iconic, debut of characters mytics (Koopalings, boo, etc) and many mechanics that continue in the future games. Without any doubt is one of the best platform games, and maybe the best game of Nintendo catalogue. Its difficulty is progressive, but in the last 2 worlds can became a real challenge.I had to use the emulator's "save states" a few times to avoid starting everyone from the beginning. Anyway, It is a game that you have to play at least one time in your life. And you will surely understand why he is a video game legend.Updated 8 Months Ago

Many consider this not only one of the best Mario games, but the best NES game ever made. Now, I'm no expert; sometimes, I don't even know why people don't think Super Castlevania 4 is the best Castlevania ever made. But what I do know is that this was one of the few games that, as a kid, I watched my old man play. I would cheer him on as he trudged through the stages; and I would lament his deaths and game-overs when he reached harder levels, like Pipe and Koopa land. And to this day, decades later, I can still remember watching - in awe and exhilaration - when he finally beat Bowser. That was a good day; and though much has changed since then, every time I play this game, I reminisce of a time when the world was simpler and pay tribute to the first and best gamer I'll ever know. For that reason alone, I give this game a perfect score. Thankfully, the game is perfect, and I may continue my unbroken streak of never being wrong.

This is the first Mario game in the series that feels great to play, the momentum, amount of air control, and jumping all feel extremely refined. Overall, the physics are extremely well done. the powerups and mechanics introduced are extremely fun, and a lot of the level design is very creative and enjoyable. The reason this game isn't a 10/10 for me is because a few levels and worlds have an annoying amount of difficulty and some cheap deaths. The astronomical leap between SMB1 and 3 is still hard to believe.Gameplay improvements include the extra power ups, the ability to pick up objects/shells/bombs and the first appearance of the iconic world map level select.
It does have age related issues. The game feels every bit of its 5-6hr playthrough as despite the world map theme changing, the levels become repetitive. Then towards the end of world 7, the difficulty suddenly spikes to Lost Levels territory. The final world 8 is not only difficult, but extremely tedious.
That aside, it was groundbreaking and laid the foundation that remains with 2D Mario today. Some argue it is even better than the Super Mario World that evolved from it. I honestly think your favourite will mostly boil down to whether you prefer NES or SNES Mario physics. I give them an equal rating.
