I didn't really like the story or music. The combat was almost fine, but man I sure was getting shredded by random enemies sometimes. Everything you do in this game kinda felt like a waste of time.

Lufia's debut was a simple effort, with entertaining personalities despite some awful dialogue, but is otherwise fairly tame Dragon Quest worship.

Feels more like a NES rpg. Padded story, with a good twist. Encounter rate is way too high. Music is solid.

It's a NES RPG on the SNES. I don't think I could have played this on real hardware, because playing it at 2x speed felt just right.

The story is cookie cutter, (with 1 big plot twist), the enemies are all boring, and the encounter rate is AWFUL. Only play this if you're crazy like me and enjoy grinding through a JRPG.

A decent RPG for the SNES in my opinion, had its bright spots, but also had some major faults. The only comparable games from this era that I have played are Chrono Trigger, FFIV, and Breath of Fire 1 & 2, and I think this game is inferior to all those titles. For being a game from this era though, the dialogue was actually pretty decent, and the storyline flowed pretty good and kept me interested. The soundtrack was pretty solid, but was pretty repetitive towards the end, and man oh man the encounter rate is extremely high. If it weren't for sweet waters in some parts of the game I would have gone insane, especially the last dungeon with those gold golem enemies. Plus I hate how you cant specifically target monsters individually, and if you kill something while it was targeted by another party member they just attack the air. Despite my gripes with the game, I still enjoyed my playthrough and am excited for the second game since I heard its way better.

This game is really amazing and underrated. The story and music really great for that time.

Not the best nor the worst RPG I've played. It's fairly standard throughout.

The frequency of enemy encounters is quite high, but thank god for smoke balls (and sweet waters)! ;) Overall OK. I quite enjoyed playing this classic RPG.

I really liked Lufia 2 back in the day, but I had to force myself through this one even so.

It has all the worst parts of the sequel, plus some not found anywhere else, and there are many annoyances and questionable design choices that make the game quite painful to play without advanced emulator features.

In fact, I am 99% sure that most of them were specifically designed to waste the player's time and make them furious for dying to random instant-death spells, falling through invisible holes before a treasure chest, fighting monsters with obnoxious abilities every 3 steps, or navigating the numerous confusing and entangled dungeons without a map.

There's more! Some treasure chests are actually invisible, too. Even if not underlevelled you may have to heal after every other battle, and often you are made to run back to some place or another to chase after some NPC or another... only to get sent back right where you came from, all the while battling the same infuriating monsters on your way out.

Bosses can be overtuned as well, and there is usually no save point outside of town. In short, you REALLY do not want to play this game without some sort of save state and preferably speed-up options, which pretty much means a PC emulator :(

Standard JRPG. Art, music, and plot are decent; gameplay is well-balanced but can get tedious and repetitive. Most enjoyable in the final act - ending is sentimental and very fulfilling. Only recommended to fans of classic JRPG's.

Totally obnoxious JRPG; it's basically the template for totally obnoxious JRPGs. :)
