Too many hidden blocks, and sub par controls.

Good
- good old metroidvania gameplay. The animations are nice. The weapons feel great to shoot.
- the progression is more linear, which I personally prefer.
- space jumping and wall jumping are easier to execute. The introduction off ledge clinging was also great.

Bad
- still too many hidden blocks. A few really ambiguous ones that I couldn't be discovered unless I bombed and power bombed every corner of the level. It's not only a waste of resources, but also time.
- i hate how hitting up during a diagonal jump cancels the momentum of the jump completely. This really threw me off. This made fighting some of the bosses very annoying.

At the sacrifice of being linear, this game has some of the greatest storytelling in the series. During my playthrough I was genuinely engaged with the story to an extent much greater than all Metroid games that came before it. And it wasn't completely linear either, the further you get into the game the more freedom you have in deciding where you need to go. The movement is incredible, ledge grabbing feels great to use, but the combat is admittedly boring and not as interesting as other Metroid titles, but it still delivers. One thing that annoyed me the most with this game especially when I reached end game and went item hunting, I realized the world is a nightmare to navigate. Doors that look fine on the map but really are collapsed, one-way halls, just all these things make navigating a complete pain even in the late game with all items at your disposal. I can't tell you how many times I had to turn around and make huge detours just to grab 1 thing. And the game locks you out of half the doors in the game until you beat the final boss and reload the save which just seems extremely unnecessary. This game also had some very poorly designed puzzles and random hidden walls with no indication of their existence whatsoever. Overall, a pretty good game, I really enjoyed it up until the end.

Great game, especially for the limits of the GBA. The gameplay is fun and rewarding, and it is a good challenge. The story is good for a Nintendo game, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat with the the suspense. Some of the bosses were very janky, they just tend to slam into you and aren't really fun compared to the rest of the series. Overall great game. Also whoever decided to hide parts of the required routes with bombable blocks needs to be fired.

Definitely nostalgia for me. Playing this originally back around release on a GBA and it has been the only Metroid game I have played and finished. Going back was a lot of fun with the nostalgia and the game remains enjoyable, but no matter what I still don't have as much interest in the metroid formula. Lots of continued frustrations with these games and the Nintendo Online way to play it makes it so much better that you can rewind easily or set load points so you don't have to back track too much. Makes actually playing this games way more enjoyable, IMO

Okay, so I've been on my Metroid shit because MP4 just got more news after like 7 years and the addition of Zero Mission to NSO, and loving it! Unfortunately, this game is nowhere near as good for many reasons. The game is linear, which is not inherently an issue, but because it's still designed similarly to a standard Metroid game, the branching paths generally end up with a shut door or a block that requires a power-up that hasn't been obtained to break. The computer structured to lead your mission is quite overbearing, frequently locking you in a Navigation room to tell you an enemy soon to be killed regardless, adding no meaningful insight, dialogue, thoughts, or otherwise. This combined with the ABSURD amount of hidden destructible blocks makes the puzzles or world feel underwhelming to solve. The bosses all have a weak point that is too precise leading to it being unsatisfying, only compounded by a stray missile not doing reduced damage, but simply bouncing off the armor or whatever else it should've connected with. The item drops of the old game are now replaced by the X parasite, which can fly away or juke as they flee to respawn into another enemy that must be killed to attempt the recollection again. Another factor is they drop ten health OR 2 missiles, maybe 20 health or four missiles for strong enemies, and EXTREMELY infrequently 500 health or so AND missiles AND power bombs. A middle ground would do wonders but there is not one, leading to late-game areas with enemies dealing upwards of 70 damage per hit (contact damage included) being extremely frustrating, especially because the enemies will also require either missiles or a charge shot to eliminate. The game as a whole feels like it doesn't have pacing in mind, as a lot of the game feels like a waste of time like the dead-ends, meaningless computer interactions, or bosses being unnecessarily precise.
All things being considered, the game certainly has positives, as when played as a strictly linear game, it flows decently and has fun moments. The story is genuinely good, and the insight into Samus's mind is a fascinating addition to select elevator rides. I prefer L being the diagonal hold button, and R being missiles instead of having to scroll through the items as it was in Super Metroid.
The gameplay is below the Metroid standard, but the story surprisingly clutches the game! Good enough.

Metroid: Fusion is a great linear game to play on the go when played on GBA or Switch on the go however is not a great game for playing in bulk at home.

There are three major flaws with this game;
- You cannot backtrack for certain items without completing the game if missed.
- You cannot explore rooms that are not on the defined path til the very end and even then you'll avoid Nav rooms or get locked.
- The upgrades in the game are really not worth it, you get far too many missles that you'll never run out and 74 Power-Bombs are worthless.

Apart from that, a saving grace of this game is thankfully how short it is, for my first playthrough with a guide for 100% items, It only took me 3:31 Hours.

Essas partes me lembram as lutas contra Nemesis em RE3 original.

Pontos negativos
O final é fraco
A exploração é linear e chata

Playing on a phone although miserable at times it is possible to play the game, unlike other Metroid games this is much more linear which I don't like as much when compared to the almost free roam you are given in most Metroid games it is off-putting at times, the main gripe I have with the game is with the almost boss rush like feel throughout the game with the amount of bosses thrown at you but other than that enjoyable game.

it's still metroid, so i love it, but it's such a mixed bag for the series. it's so linear and restrictive compared to super metroid, and yet, it doesn't resolve the issue of me not knowing what the fuck i'm supposed to do. however!!! the modernizations and additions are fantastic, like the ledge grab and streamlining of missiles 'n beams, and the boss fights, while intensely difficult, are expertly designed and super rewarding. the story, too, actually benefits from the linear design quite a bit, making for some insane plot twists. the atmosphere is pretty sick, too, much like its predecessor, even better because of the sa-x encounters. so yeah i still like it a lot :)

This is a very solid game, however I feel it's the weakest of the 2D Metroids I've played. Now that doesn't mean it's bad, in fact I loved my time with this game. The thing is it's linearity, which it's completely open about. This game uses its linearity to its advantage to invoke fear and story, which were highlights of the game to me. While I'll probably replay Zero Mission and Super more, that does not make this a bad game and I recommend it to anyone who wants an interesting story-focused game like this.

This is a great game. I played Other M before this and it makes that game even worse and retread-y than before. Linearity and the story are much better than Other M. It actually makes sense here. Really close to Super Metroid and Zero Mission in terms of 2D Metroid quality for me. The only things I didn't like were such things felt like they dealt too much damage, particularly the SA-Xand other things. The boss fights with Yakuza and Nightmare were kind of frustrating.

Metroid freaking Fusion... Oh man oh man. What can I say about this game except it's truly inspiring?

It's got many flaws, yes, especially on replays when you just wanna get to the good stuff. The station itself can be lame to travel at times, the boss fights aren't anything to write home about for the most part, and there's a few sequences that bring some genuine frustration.

But up till this point the metroid mainline games have been doing their best to tell a proper story and at this stage it culminates in this genuine setting of intrigue, mystery and space horror. Samus Aran has been stripped of most of her suits functions, she's vulnerable physically, has a newfound weakness to the cold, and she's alone on this research station with only her AI companion for company at resting points, and an X-Parasite wearing her old armor chasing her down like the newly created Metroid she is now that her DNA has been altered.

It shows in gameplay. Samus is faster, she has an easier time managing feats of agility thanks to not being nearly as weighed down, but for every benefit you feel this new setting has given her up to and including the ability to absorb the X, you feel just as weak as a result of it until you claim more and more upgrades that are tailor made to play around her new flaws.

The ice missile being an alternative to the longstanding ice beam because Samus cannot physically handle how cold the beam is in her gun because of her DNA, therefore needing to contain it within missiles as an upgrade instead is so freaking genius. So much thought went into Samus as a character and how she'd play around this new setting and i think this is something the mainline metroid series continues to accel at even up to Dread. It's a bit understated how well thought out things like that are in the mainlines, we need to talk about it more!!!!

The BSL may be a slightly flawed experience to traverse at times but DAMN is it scary as all hell.

I think in a lot of ways this is one of the games that captures the heart of Metroid being inspired by the Alien film above most of the other iterations in a good way, and that's not to say the other games do it worse because they also do it excellently with the exception of Zero Mission feeling more like a first adventure. It's just that Fusion knows exactly what it wants to do and for the most part exceeds in its vibe throughout the entire journey, it starts how it starts and it carries that vibe throughout and i think that's gorgeous of it.

This game rocks. Bring back Diffusion Missiles, they go so hard.

Loved it! At first I was thinking it was too linear and easy, but the difficulty soon picked way up (man the last few bosses left me sweaty) and the linearity worked with how narrative focused this particular entry is. Only not a fan of the overuse of hidden blocks without any indicators and the fake walls with passages, just feels like cheap game design to me. Good soundtrack too, even if it's often hard to hear over the sfx and the crunchy GBA sound.

Although it is a shorter Metroid than previous entries, Fusion is a worthy entry in the series that plays to the fact that it is on a handheld system. The X Parasites are a new threat to Samus, and they are utilized in multiple creative ways. In particular, the SA-X is a terrifying villain that creates a sense of fear throughout the entire game. The graphics and music are some of the best that the Game Boy Advance has to offer.

Foregoing a more "open zone" level design for a more linear one, the game comes closer to achieving the perfect balance between backtracking without pain and paving your way through a new zone. This also opens the possibility of a more story focused game which takes various elements from the previous entries and combines them into a super smooth experience.

Sentence Long Review: Metroid Fusion is a tight, well-designed, and enjoyable game only hindered by questionable boss fights.

Wonderful game to ease myself into playing Metroid after passively enjoying the series for years. Snappy and responsive gameplay to match with a briskly-paced plot. That final trek between the penultimate and final bosses (not counting the true final boss, which is mainly just spectacle, albeit great spectacle) makes you feel like an unstoppable killing machine on a mission of determination, vengeance (for reasons I'm about to share), and purpose...until you reach that final boss.
On that note, my only real criticism of the game: cheap boss design. Around half of the bosses in this game have really cheap patterns that keep you stuck in a loop of failure for hours on end. That 5:30 I have for my completion time is accurate...if you don't count the hundreds of times I reloaded a save state to restart a boss (I did not use any save states beyond this purpose), most of which came from [SPOILERS for, hmm...Jesus Christ!, an almost 21 year old game] my bouts against Neo Ridley and especially the SA-X. Seriously, my duel with that dreaded doppelganger went on for two whole hours with a break in the middle, as I needed sleep. Extremely glad that I emulated this game for access to save states. In fact, I believe that emulation is the way to go for this game, whether it be through its upcoming inclusion in the NSO Expansion Pack or less officially sanctioned means, for that reason (along with the ridiculous used cartridge prices). Anyways, will definitely be playing this one again, after some time away to mentally recover from the SA-X fight. Joking!...mostly.

Metroid Marathon! Last game was Super Metroid (Feb 12th, 2023), next is Metroid Prime Remastered!
Another great Metroid game, but one that is wildly different from it's predessecor. Playing this right after Super felt like whiplash, due to how much handholding and story is in this game. Despite being in the same franchise, these games feel very different. Not really in the mechanics, although Samus is a lot less floaty in this game (hooray for me!), but the game guides you nearly every step of the way. It does still make you figure out some things on your own (sometimes the way to progress is really, REALLY annoying and obtuse, I was stuck more than in Super surprisingly enough) but it does tell you what you need to do. The focus on story is also surprising, as Super told most of it's story with subtext. However, these aren't detracting factors; in some ways, I prefer this kind of gameplay to Super. It may not reach that game's highs, but it's still a great time. The core Metroid gameplay is mostly unchanged, and it's just as fun as ever. Small additions like Super Missiles stacking on regular Missiles and the removal of some upgrades that cluttered up gameplay are good additions in my opinion. The story is interesting and has you on your toes, especially with the fantastic antagonist of the SA-X. I wish there were more SA-X sections, because it is a genius and terrifying villain. I have a couple minor issues with the ending that I won't go into due to spoilers, but overall this game has a really good story that fits in perfectly with the last three games. The only gameplay issue I had was some sections felt unfair, due to the fact that Samus gets hit very hard and heals very little in return. I understand it's supposed to emphasize how weak she's become, but it makes some sections a lot more frustrating than they need to be. That's a minor complaint though. While this game doesn't reach the peaks of Super Metroid, I still thought it was a very enjoyable entry in this fantastic franchise.

To get the negatives out of the way, it's very linear and handholdy. Does not trust the player at all so finding items isn't organic like in other Metroid games. It tells you where to go and it blocks off anywhere that goes off course. These things are the opposite of what makes Metroid great. What I really liked about it was the eerie atmosphere to go along with "The Thing" inspired story. Played with color correction setting on in Retroarch so it doesn't look insanely saturated and with the game like this, it might be the best looking 2D game in the series. The boss fights as well are my favorite in the series. The visual design of them was so great. Really loved how monstrous and creepy some of them looked. Even with the all these positives, the game design is still a huge issue though it ended very strongly which saved the game for me.

Nice spritework. Given the more linear nature, the game avoids the problem of backtracking trying to find what progression path you missed. Certain boss attack patterns and the amount of hidden blocks were a bit frustrating.

A weak storyline with the player forming no real attachment to any of the characters. Samus loses some of her strong female protagonist vibes since all she thinks about is the mission and some guy she had feelings for.

I think this game is great. It's no Super Metroid, but there's a lot of cool stuff in this title. Another great title.

I don't think the 2D Metroids are for me, but this comes the closest so far. Corrects many of the problems I had with Metroid, Metroid II, and Super Metroid, but it isn't perfect.
