This game was pretty fun, but man was it hard. I liked this one more than X2. It felt a little more refined. They went wild with X2 realizing all the things they could do after sitting on X for a while. Then they honed in on the good stuff with this one. This game favored putting its difficulty in super precise gameplay. The patterns and platforming weren't too hard to get a grip on, but any slip-ups caused massive damage. Everything just dealt so much damage in this game that it required learning rhythm of every enemy perfectly. I enjoyed that but it did make for a few brutal segments of the game. Don't even get me started on the final boss. Four hits and you're dead. That's insane. Thank god for sub tanks.

- Exhaustingly excessive backtracking across all stages
- Odd pacing with numerous (and at times random) sub bosses reminding you the stage isnt even over
- Needlessly high damage taken during early game

A bit rough around the edges, but it's still a pretty good send-off to the SNES trilogy.
Play the Zero Project v4.6 Romhack if you can - it's a giant overhaul that improves a lot of things - it's what I did my playthrough with.

Whoever designed these levels needs to learn the difference between fun and tedious when it comes to difficulty. Enemy placements and spike traps are meticulously placed off screen to damage the player. You have to either memorize the stage or slowly crawl to avoid traps. Speaking of difficulty, the enemies do way too much damage making the beginning of the game overly tedious to get past. On top of that the final boss is really annoying.

It’s a Mega Man X game though so it’s still a good game.

Review written from a 100% standpoint. So much back tracking in annoying stages with repetitive grungy music. I guarantee if I played the 32bit version I'd rate it significantly higher just for better music.

Slightly Worse Mega Man X2, lots of problems brought up in X2 are made worse in X3, i fear for this series if things are continuing to go in this direction since X2 was just a worse X1.

The only word I have for X3 is "Dissapointment". X was amazing, and X2 was pretty good despite some obnoxious design, but X3 is just disappointing.

The level design is often longer than it needs to be, but yet uninteresting and unmemorable. The bosses and story feel phoned in for the most part. And the music mostly leaves no lasting impression. Don't get me wrong, there was a few stand out designs here and there, but by tomorrow I will forget playing any part of this game, much like I had forgotten literally everything aside from vague memories of Kaiser Sigma from the last time I played, when the anniversary collection on Gamecube came out.

Also, the first Doppler Fortress level can screw off. X2 had an obnoxious wall climbing segment, but at least they built up to it. This one, combined with the Switch input lag from wireless controls, is terrible.

Overall, this game just isnt fun, and I'm disappointed by how much potential the X series has that got wasted here (any several subsequent entries).

I have perhaps been too hard on Mega Man X3 in the past. X3 is a low point for the SNES era trilogy easily, with its many gameplay additions still hardly enough to push the series past the basic gameplay of the first two games. X3 is the series taken as far as it can go prior to the jump forward in X4 without reaching absolute staleness and tedium. However, not having X3 would leave a gaping hole in the series. Its still fun as hell. Its a game that will definitely appeal to completionists with its wide assortment of upgrades and secrets, but also manages to not get too difficult if some of these are skipped. X3 is worth revisiting almost as much as the other titles prior to X6 and stands above some of the lower points of the classic series for its design complexity alone. The CD quality sound on the 5th generation versions also enhances the experience even if the tunes are not quite as memorable as X1 and X2.

man if I didn't like X2 that much X3 was even worse. X2 had some tedious shit but X3 was tedious the whole way. The biggest and most obvious problem is that X apparently went vegan as he's frailer than tissue paper crossing an event horizon, some enemies can tear off 33% of you health in one clean blow when you first start. The start is obviously the most miserable part as you have very little HP and no upgrades so a good 70% of your deaths will be the first starting bosses. Music wise the only three pieces that actually registered were Zero's theme, Viles factory theme and gravity beetles stage. Everything else was completely unmemorable.

Formula wise it added absolutely nothing except for some useless ass mechs that get used like 4 times max and all 4 times it's just to get a collectable. The gold armor is a lot of fun but seeing as it's an end game item it doesn't get used for long. Sigma this time around was pretty ridiculous. His first form isn't terrible but his second form is fucking dumb as his hitbox is microscopic and requires perfect aim to hit. worst part is that after the fight there's an escape sequence which I didn't foresee as I played blind which actually got me killed and forced me to redo that fucking torture of a boss fight. Another thing I should mention is Bit, Byte and Vile. I was forced to fight them early and I had none of the weapons that they were weak to so I had to fight them with nothing but my X-buster and one subtank, that alone was also really fucking painful

level design wise, it felt really bland. As I think about it gravity beetle and crush crawfish's stage felt really similar.

All in all a clean 50% of my experience with this game is miserable, I'm surprised so many people like it with it's unbalanced difficulty and the fact that it brought absolutely nothing to the table. 7/10, Will very likely never play this game again.

Easily the weakest of the SNES Mega Man X games. It does absolutely nothing new to the formula, it is unbelievably stingy about health refills, the difficulty curve is horrendously unbalanced, and the only even moderate attempt at trying something different is having unlockable ride armors, which come into play so rarely that it's wasted effort.

MMX3 is still a solid game, and still features some of my favorite bosses of the series, but 2 big things really drag this game down as the worst of the early games:

- The collectathon baloney of X2 is doubled, and half of it is utterly pointless: The 4 robots are just...why? They have such limited uses, and the ways to unlock them are ridiculous. The Frog robit is the worst: On land, it's utterly useless, in the single water area where it can be used, it's...not as good as just being out of it, except to be used to find two other collectables hidden nearby. The super armor upgrades only prevent you from getting the ultimate armor down the road.

- The music. X2's music was good, but noticeably less memorable than the first. X3's music is just t e r r i b l e. Jarring, discordant...blah. I love the original's music dearly, but I never thought its being missing would affect my taste for the game so much.

The rest of the game is a mix of the best and mediocre of X and X2, meaning this game is still absolutely worth playing if you're a fan of the series. Neon Tiger and Blast Hornet are among the most fun mavericks of the series, imo. I love the degree of secrets and alternative routes towards Sigma that all affect the outcome in really obscure (perhaps *too* much so) ways.

Becomes reasonably fun once you get health and armor upgrades, but until you beat your first boss it's ridiculously difficult. Level design can often be cheap, but the game's still fun enough once you pick up the pace.

The ride armor idea doesn't ever amount to much and the bosses aren't quite as memorable as X and X2. With that being said it's still a great game with the best Sigma battle of any of the X games.
