Mega Man X is an old friend. A very dear old friend that everytime he shows up you two end up having a blast. In someway there's always something that feels fresh even though it's a relationship that lasts since childhood.Your friend shows some wrinkles and hair loss, much due to some bullshit difficulty spikes at Sigma Stage 1 and endlessly grinding for E Tanks whenever the final boss' form wipes all your tanks and special abilities.
A balding - but very dear friend.

I never understood the reason for fracturing the Mega Man series with this side series with the same basic gameplay that is somehow better than the main series. It's not like the 2D games ever had much of a story. But maybe they wanted to make the distinction that this was a separate, edgier series. Whatever the reason, this is what I consider to be the definitive Mega Man experience. Great pixel art, fun and bouncy soundtrack, and tons of secrets and upgrades. The platforming is very natural and fluid. With the leg upgrade boosting your speed, it opens a lot of possibilities for fast jumps and even damage boosting through difficult sections.
The game gets a little too hard at the end, but almost all the Mega Man games have sections that are a little too hard. There's a password system so it's not like you get penalized too much, but having multiple difficult boss fights will definitely test your endurance.

I don't usually like action, nor do I like platformers. Despite me loving the X series, I never had a proper crack at it.I'VE BEEN MISSING OUT.
This is probably one of most solid and tight action-platformers I've played, and it stands out even today. The music is a rocker, X controls beautifully with such simple controls, and most importantly of all....it's not bullshit, which is a big problem I find with older 'hard' games, even classic Megaman. Every boss is fair and can be learned with some practice (although Sting Chamelon having mandated damage that basically requires a specific weapon is...annoying, easily my least favourite boss) and you can go through the game without even finding an armour piece or 'cheating' with using the boss's weakness.
The 'story' is simple but effective, although Maverick Hunter X would expand on it more beautifully. I'm sure every kid in the 90s rooted for X and Zero. The only complaint I find about the game is once again, Sting Chamelon having a terrible midboss and some bs attacks, and some of the secrets being REALLY esoteric. 90s kids without a guide, I feel for you.
Anyways, fun and well-designed bosses and levels, and really polished, what more could you want out of Megaman?

Once again, I loved playing this. The legacy collection doesn't change much, it's just the most convenient way to play the game at this time. Still a fast-paced and fun Mega Man game. I recommend it to any fan of platformers and really just anyone in general.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

Easy to forget what a great game this is. Final boss is a huge difficulty spike, and for how crucial the boots are I think it would make sense to just have them up front. Otherwise front to back fun and a good challenge.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

A really fun Mega Man game. The bosses, level design, and weapons are all creative. It does a great job of easing the player into the fast paced gameplay and is overall super fun to play. Now at first, it to a bit for me to adjust cause I thought only the A button was dash. However, I then figured out you could double tap left or right to dash and it all started to come together. Mastering X's movement in this game will make you fall in love with it. Another thing this game does right is the difficulty and stage length. I think this game has the perfect length for Mega Man stages. They never feel too short or too long. This goes in tandem with the difficulty. The game starts off pretty hard but due to the levels not being too long, you don't feel discouraged to try again. The game also gives you a lot of tools to deal with what it throws at you. Overall, I really enjoyed this game. An easy classic in the SNES library.

Played with the Mega Man X Legacy Collection which has three fatal omissions.- If you change your controls it resets them to their default every time you load the game.
- You can't map controls to the trigger for some reason.
- No save state function or "Load last checkpoint" (the ladder being a feature in Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 which makes it really odd.)
Pretty good Mega Man action. Still have some of the same criticisms like cheap enemy placement and sudden jumps in difficulty (Final Boss in particular is a wall compared to the rest of the game.) but the action, weapons, music and exploration aspect are pretty fun.
Side Note The Spider Robot is an ass boss fight

This game is a classic and holds up very well. The gameplay and level design is very tight and responsive with a decent learning curve. Over the course of the game you get really powerful and feel like you accomplished a lot. The only issues I have with the game are criticisms of the collection; being lack of save states, lame ass menus, and a weird save system resulting in loosing progress on final stage and with an upgrade.Updated 5 Months Ago

Oh hell yeah.Following the 6th entry to the classic series, Mega Man took a turn for the spectacular in his first SNES outing. Over a year before Mega Man 7 would be released, Mega Man X introduced the series to a much faster, harsher, and high-octane style of gameplay that debuted with a bang.
Now, you control X, Mega Man's successor. Not only can he do everything the original Mega Man could do, but he can now jump off of walls and dash instead of sliding. Both are such simple but brilliant expansions to the inherent Mega Man moveset.
The spritework is excellent as are the designs of all the characters. Now, instead of Robot Masters named after anything, Mega Man X introduces Mavericks which are all based on animals. Instead of magnets, concrete, skulls, or drills, now we have a penguin, mammoth, mandrill, chameleon, eagle, octopus, armadillo, and whatever the fuck a kuwanger is. Everything is pleasing on the eyes here and the designs of the Mavericks in this game look superb. They really feel like robotic creatures of their real-life animal counterparts.
But for how pleasing on the eyes this game is, it is one-thousand times more pleasing on the ears. I don't think I need to explain how orgasmic this game's soundtrack is, every single song is incredible. But even beyond the OST, the game's sound design is also sublime. Everything has that perfect SNES crispness and compression that sounds so perfect. Special shout out needs to go to the new Buster sounds, as charging it up now doesn't degrade my eardrums.
Also, expanding off of Mega Man 4-6's concept of collectibles, Mega Man X features several of its own. There are capsules with different pieces of armor that beef up your capabilities, heart tanks to increase your health, and subtanks as a form of a refillable E-Tank. These will be hidden throughout the main 8 levels of the game and will sometimes require special weapons to acquire. While I love the idea of these, the implementation of them isn't stellar. The heart tanks and subtanks are fine but the armor upgrades were handled strangely.
To begin with, the aforementioned dash ability isn't even available to you until you encounter it in Chill Penguin's stage where it is unavoidable. I dislike this immensely and would have rather had the upgrade appear in the intro stage as this messes with the feeling of freedom the game offers in boss selection. Making the first stage borderline mandatory before you can dash shows that the devs intended for it to be the first stage and later issues reveal why. Moving along, the chest upgrade just makes X more resistant to damage. That's not bad if it is a little basic but to get the upgrade you need to fight a boring and overly long miniboss with terrible feedback for the capsule to appear. The X-Buster upgrade is phenomenal, as it allows for the basic buster to be charged up further than the regular charged shot as well as providing the ability to charge up special weapons. This radically changes how the game is played and I recommend getting it as soon as possible. It's a shame it has the worst hiding spot in the game as reaching it requires tedious pixel-perfect jumps. Lastly is the helmet upgrade and it's terrible. All it lets you do is break a specific type of block by jumping into it, nothing else. It only exists to acquire more items and changes the gameplay minimally.
Also on the issue of you being forced to pick a certain level to start with, Mega Man X frustrating to beat without using the weaknesses of the bosses. Don't believe me? Fight Armored Armadillo without using his weakness and tell me it's not a slog. This isn't the case for every boss but certain ones do not feel like they were designed to be the first fight in the game, especially considering how easy Chill Penguin is as an intro boss. It doesn't help that some bosses like Spark Mandrill become a joke with their weakness.
Though it wasn't touched on much, the level design in this game is great, especially when dealing with hidden collectibles. The X-Buster upgrade aside, nothing ever felt like it was bullshit or cheaply hidden. Often collectibles will be visible but just out of reach, requiring a new ability or clever platforming to be acquired. The fortress stages, aside from the vertical ascent in the first one are pretty great. I like how the bosses are spread out throughout the levels instead of being condensed into one room that wastes your weapon energy like every classic game after the first one.
The fortress bosses weren't too bad though Bospider can kiss my ass for how little time you have to read its telegraphs. The final boss also took a step just a little too far into the bullshit territory. Wolf Sigma has too tiny of a hitbox for the attacks you're meant to dodge and the attacks you have at your disposal.
All-in-all, Mega Man X is an incredible spin-off that would go on to spawn its own 8-part series full of massive highs and disastrous lows. Play this game, it rocks.

Pros and Cons+Fast paced yet manageable gameplay
+A great story incredibly well woven into the gameplay paired with a sense of growth that no other 2D platformer can match.
+An absolutely legendary soundtrack
+A feeling of power and strength that is well balanced with the challenge of the game
+Amazing boss and level design
+Weapons that are powerful and fun to use, yet there isnât any one weapon that feels too powerful or weak
-A couple of frustrating final levels
-Boss weaknesses being a little too overpowered, undermining the intensity of the battles (looking at you, Spark Mandrill)
This is the best 2D platformer Iâve ever played and likely will ever play. The incredible level design, music, bosses, weapons and secrets all come together to form a game that I see myself coming back to time and time again for years to come. I look forward to my next replay of this game, cause it wonât be the last.

God, this game still holds up years later. I had so much fun going back through this for the first time in a while, and even now it still holds its' own. Truly a classic in every sense of the word.Everything about the game from the stellar soundtrack to the challenging, yet manageable difficulty, to all of the little nooks and crannies about the game (all of the easter eggs that they threw in)--it's just timeless. It's not perfect, but it's damn near close.

I kinda forced myself to play through this game. It was fun, but thereâs nothing that really grabbed me. The final boss definitely upset me with its annoying moveset. Yes I figured out how to beat it, but I had to cheese it by messing with its ai which just left a sour taste in my mouth. The game feels like it wants you to play aggressive and constantly move forward with its respawning enemies and whatnot, but the buster is a ranged weapon. So getting close to enemies doesnât feel good because youâre punished for backing up to fight at range.Edit: I think I just played this game at a bad time in my life. Iâve recently replayed the game and had a great time. Itâs a good game so Iâm changing my rating to an 8/10

One of the best games of all time. Everything in this game is designed so masterfully and clicks together perfectly. Music is great and the visual style is insane. Upgrades are fun to explore and collect. Level design is masterful. Bosses are super unique and have changing attributes depending on the weapons used. Stages effect other stages depending on the order you beat them in, and it makes Mega Man X's world feel so alive. 100% Completion bonus is currently my favorite reward you earn in any game (Street Fighter Hadoken). Please, if you haven't, play this game!

One of my favorite games of all time and infinitely re-playable. Mega Man X was a natural progression from the already amazing Mega Man series, but just improved on the formula in every way. The controls are super tight, making pixel perfect maneuvers a breeze. Completing certain levels will have an impact on other levels, which is a first (and last) for the series. The music is amazing from start to finish. The boss battles can also be challenging, if you stick to just using the buster. My one gripe is that using the weapons the boss is weak to causes a stun-lock loop, making them extremely easy to destroy. I also love that there is a secret weapon that can by unlocked via completing an arbitrary task. Overall, this is a must play game for the Super Nintendo.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

In some aspects I think this game is a little overrated, but in a lot of other aspects I think it holds up just as much as people say. Designwise this game is fantastic with the level design and game control being top-notch for the super nintendo. I'm not the biggest fan of the SNES sound chip so the OST was a pretty big miss for me personally, but the songs are indeed well-composed. I liked this game enough to 100% it, so take with that as you will. One of the classics on the SNES for sure, but a best game of all time I wouldn't consider this.Updated 2.5 Years Ago

Mega Man X appropriately feels like an update to the original Mega Man series. The inclusion of wall jumping and dashing both change up the formula just enough to make the gameplay feel fresh while maintaining the platforming and boss battles the series is known for.The bosses, all of which are based on animals, are well designed and most of them still pose a challenge when up against their weapon weakness. There is an element of backtracking in that some power ups are not reachable until others are acquired, even when following the optimal stage order, and for this reason, completed stages can be revisited and exited. Enemies respawn the moment their initial spawn point touches the edge of the screen, making farming for heath drops easy, but this does get annoying. The last level is a brutal challenge of killing three bosses in a row with one life.
I didnât like the controls for one particular reasonâthe dash button could easily have been mapped to L or R but instead, dash, jump, and shoot are all right next to each other on the face of the controller, requiring an uncomfortable claw grip to be able to maneuver freely and shoot/charge a shot simultaneously.

Aside from Mega Man 2, this is probably the most well designed and memorable of all of the entire Mega Man franchise from my childhood. I played this game numerous times, and despite not having touched the game at all for the last 15 years, I found that my memory of enemy patterns and locations of collectables was pretty good still. The design additions of the X series brought a breath of fresh air to the franchise, allowing new ideas that just don't fit with the base series. Both are great, and I'm glad they both were able to continue separately. However the story for X implies a very bleak future for Mega Man, which has yet to happen but we know the gist of what will eventually happen.
I enjoyed having the Rookie Mode added to the current legacy collection. I've found as I've gotten significantly older, my ability to play twitchy games has definitely declined. And I just don't want the endless frustration of not "making that jump" - I actually almost quit at the green platforms in Sigma Fortress stage 1. That said, I played on Switch and there may have been some controller lag from the pro controller similar to what caused issues with the Mega Man Legacy Collection games. Playing handheld makes a significant improvement.

A fun, fast paced platformy shooty game. You really can't go wrong with MegaMan X. Cool level design, legendary kick ass music and just general all around fun. This is my second playthrough as I first played this game like 8 years ago. My only gripe is that the game has a number of tedious moments that slow the game down to a crawl, the D-rex is a terrible boss fight and there were a number of bullshitty moments. Collecting all the items is fun and the feeling of getting powers that help uncover more secrets is satisfying.a very solid 90/100. I definitely see myself replaying this game in the future.
note: With how disappointing X2 was, My outlook for Megaman X improved bumping it from 85 to 90/100.

The first game in the X Series is a big departure from Mega Man's Classic roots and the first to leave the NES for a newer console.Mostly good bosses for this one. The Mavericks are almost all too easy and not very interesting whether or not you're using their weakness. I like Chill Penguin and Storm Eagle but the rest aren't great. Sigma and Velguarder were pretty fun and quite challenging. Sigma's second phase was a little annoying. The other fortress bosses were okay other than Bospider who is frustrating and slow.
A great array of weapons. Rolling Shield and Chameleon Sting are fun shield type weapons for avoiding attacks, Electric Spark gives you a vertical option, and Homing Torpedo can hit anywhere. Unfortunately these are all overshadowed by Storm Tornado 90% of the time as it can one-shot most enemies and is easy to aim.
The armour is a mixed bag this time. The dash is great of course but should have been an innate ability so you aren't forced to play Chill Penguin first just to not move so slow. Half damage is useful but not very interesting and the headbutt is for a single item making it worthless. The charged special weapons on the other hand are a great addition that gives some (notably Rolling Shield) a lot more use.
The game looks great and is a huge step up from its predecessor on the NES MM6. Sprites are excellent, cutscenes are included now which is great to see, and the music can be good as well.
The levels were mostly good without anything too obnoxious. If you don't have the arm part Sigma Fortress 1's intro is awful but that won't apply for most playthroughs. None of the levels really stand out as excellent either.
Not particularly difficult this time, X's first outing features four subtanks, reusable versions of the classic E Tank allowing for many health refills which kills much of the challenge.
Mega Man X moved away from the classic games in many ways good and bad. This first title was a lot of fun and I loved the addition of different gameplay focused on using the dash to move quickly through the levels. Attempting to give the series a bit of a story was a great idea too. Ultimately I don't think this lives up to the heights of the six Classic games but its a great time and a good herald of things to come for the series.

I see why so many old school gamers revere this as a classic. It's a really good game, and a definite evolution from the original Mega Man series. The addition of the abilities to dash and wall jump make the game play very different from its predecessors, and it generally feels faster and higher octane in nature. It also has various upgrades to find, adding another layer to the game, and providing an almost Metroidvania-like quality with potential backtracking (though it's not that complex). The aesthetic is great, and a visual improvement over the NES games for sure. Sprites are more detailed and often bigger, and there's a wider colour palate and slightly better animations. The enemy and maverick (robot) designs are great overall, and the game just feels great to play. The music pumps you up and there are some great tracks to enjoy, and the level design is quite solid.
My only real complaints about the game revolve around the last portion of the game, namely that some enemy placement is cheap/cruel, and the final boss is a little on the cheap side. Other than that it's a really solid game, and fans of Mega Man and/or action platformers will have a great time.
